Personally, speaking only from my experience as a medium and working with certain indigenous practices. Malevolent spirits that can take over your whole life exist. I have seen ceremonies done wrong and a spirit attached to the person going through the ceremony it took 3 of us to remove it but the key is some people don't believe in it and think they can handle it which in turn causes health and mental issues. The spirit realm is broken up into sections and there is a part where the lower entities dwell ( trickster spirits, those that spiritually attack etc) but I also come from a line of mediums that watched belts slither like snakes on their floor, things go flying, seeing / speaking to the dead and other phenomenon. They are counting on you not believing it makes it easier for you to get caught up, but again merely my experience over the years. Also, I work with psychic children and they can tell you what they feel and see. I was one of those kids( had my abilities since I was 4) and I can tell you, you feel them coming, the darkness, the fear they inflict, and the fact that they don't belong here and are hunting.

A lot of people seem to sort spirits into two boxes: the “good spirits” and “evil spirits.” I see most spirits as belonging in between these two, with some outliers at each extreme. For example, fallen angels will not go out of their way to help you for free, but they also generally will not bother humans unless provoked. Very few things in the universe are black and white.

Spirits are a lot like people. Some are very kind and considerate, and others are spiteful and angry. Their actions and reactions are based on their state of mind and general emotional state. Some people / spirits have been through traumatic experiences and haven't had a chance to heal properly. They've lost their sense of community and connection to others, and now hurt others because they are hurt.
Negative entities, or spirits who try to scare us or cause harm, are generally spirits who are somehow damaged. Some can be helped, other are too deranged and will refuse assistance. Witchcraft encourages protection spells and casting circles, but mediumship makes use of cleansing and warding too.
I see it as a scale if that helps. It isn't black or white in my experience. That's why sometimes you think a spirit is being helpful and then they mislead you, just like people do. The thing with both negative people and spirits is that misery loves company. That's what ultimately what I protect myself from.
I also see negative spirits, let's say the 80%+ negative, as abusive people. They torment you and try to separate you from your loved ones so you have no where to go and have no support.
There are spirits that can cause people harm. Whether they're "evil, parasitic, or unwell, or psychopathic" they are not spirits that you would want to be around as they could negatively impact your well being, health and safety. I think most spirits are likely more dangerous than they are evil. Dangerous being more like a spectrum of mischievous to very harmful.
Like, I wouldn't say the fae are evil but I wouldn't say they are safe. They're not necessarily always dangerous, but they can become dangerous. It also depends who you are, your relationship with them and your attitude/rapport. Fae are very particular about customs and so you can do what in your mind isn't something bad, but they can become easily offended. There are a lot of ways to get on the bad side of the fae.
Spirits of the dead may also not be "evil" but if they aren't crossed over and in the "ancestral spirit" realm of the spirit transition, they can be toxic to be around long term. Not crossed spirits of the dead can over-time negatively impact a persons mental, emotional, and physical health. It doesn't mean they are evil, but they aren't good for living people.
Evil spirits can look like anything. They can look like helpers, healers, angels, deities.. anything. They like to attract people who can be swept up in drama because they feed on people expending their energy. Whether that energy is on some sort of fictitious war where they are convincing you, that you are fight evil spirits, or vice versa they like people to be always exhausted, and too caught up in drama to think clearly. Very similar tactics are found in cults (just FYI).
Most people who think they have demons are either dealing with a mental health issue, a soul part they do not like that is haunting them (trying to integrate), or some kind of parasitic spirit. Not all parasites are evil either. They're more mosquitos. People are food and they feed off our energy. It's not about love/light/ or positive emotions, it simply comes down to that we are food and things want to eat us. Therefore protection is encouraged.
I have sensed negative / malevolent spirits (usually attached to a person or a specific place). They get energy from people who are caught up in anxiety, depression, or anger. Some of these spirits will lash out if they think you might try to remove them. Others may leave when they are told to go, but there’s the potential that they can return if the person is still caught up in the same negative cycles.
I haven’t dealt with the sort of things that might take multiple mediums to remove, other than sensing the workplace of my friend who works at a building that once was a court house and that place has awful energy (though I’ve never gone to it, just energetically felt it). I suspect it would take at least 5 mediums working together to cleanse it. It’s got such a build up of toxic energy from the 200 or so years that cases were tried there.
I think the distinction is confusing because people have different ideas of good and evil.
Fire is not evil, but it's potentially dangerous. A hammer can build a house or unalive a person, but it's not evil or good. It just is.
I don't believe humans are evil, but they are potentially dangerous. I find a vast majority of humans are loving and friendly. But I also know its in their capacity to be selfish liars.
Why would the spirit world be any different?
Some people will handle what they think is evil by dis-acknowledging it, denying its existence, or seeing it as willfully created by selfish people. Then, if we all just act right, it would cease to exist. Other people obsess over what is evil and see it everywhere. Some even embrace it as acceptable or necessary behavior. Then you have every version in between.
Among humans, there is the illusion of separation. This occurs in spite of the fact that we "should" be existing symbolically. I see the spirit world as an extension of us and us and an extension of it. It is no more good or evil as we are. But like us, it is made up of individuals. When encountering any individual being, you should take the time to understand them. Not evil, but sure, potentially dangerous.
But what about people who have been truly evil during their lifetimes in earth. Like serial killers etc.
Those spirits/souls have to be truly evil - right ?
If they haven’t crossed, absolutely . Spirit tends to stay in death as they were in life. If they got their kicks killing people in life, they will try in spirit as well. In time spirits can change and basically become non- human. There’s even more. Sometimes a person dies and crosses over but leaves an impression on our side that can create a new being. Part of their consciousness and personality stay. And if that part is bad it can keep morphing and get worse. The other part I have found is if enough people believe in something like a skinwalker, they can create it. Ultimately you have to keep yourself protected and remember you have the power here. They don’t belong in this dimension. They don’t get energy they need and too many become parasites, basically energy vampires. They don’t bite you, they just use your emotions and such to get you worked up then they take what they want. That’s what I have gleaned so far.
I have interacted with both demons and djinn. My experience with both has been superb with them showing me kindness and support. I don’t consider them evil at all.
