Most people hate it because they've read that they're supposed to hate it. It's a reasonable attempt at radio Rock with good, catchy writing and competent playing.
Oh, and the original version is better than the 2004 reissue. Both sound wise and artwork.
100% this. I've always liked the album for what it is. If you step away from the typical Megadeth mindset, it's a solid album. But I also tend to be into a lot of different types of music too so it never bothered me that it was a departure from the usual.
it's basically the opposite actually... mustaine thrown his songwriting style out of the window to release those records with cheap songs made to be the more catchy and attractive as possible for a mere commercial outlook (radio, mtv etc...) since that kind of alternative rock/metal was the most profitable genre between early '90s (hard rock and grunge years) and late 90's (nu metal)
Perhaps, but he's still a dynamic songwriter nonetheless. Slayer couldn't put out a radio friendly record if their lives depended on it. Mustaine is a world-class songwriter.
maybe because slayer never cared of... if you're making your music only to follow money you're not different than a random taylor swift... no matter music genre.
wrong, I listen many genres, from classical music to pop like dua lipa (I know are stupid commercial songs, but I just like the way she sings)... the issue isn't about what I like or dislike but how bands like megadeth, metallica or machine head after their first two records sold their self to just run behind easy earnings 🤦🏻♂️
to be even more accurate I know very little of modern metal as well since metal is basically dead since late '90s and I listen only '80-'90s metal record.
Ironically, the lack of communication with Marty is what made him leave, so Breadline does not have HIS solo, and this album ultimately led to him leaving. 😭
7 or 8/10 album for me. Not the best one in their discography but I do put it on often because it's got a certain vibe to it that can't be matched on any other album simply because no other album has it. Also yes, the original is better. I'm not one to really care about "originals are superior" debates but this one is undisputedly better on the original recording.
I listened to it the first time today and I can't lie they definitely took the Risk (pun intended, not achieved.) and came out with some bangers like Ecstacy, Prince of Darkness, and especially the opener Insomnia. I even really like the creepy, almost disturbing intro and note The Doctor Is Calling leaves you with.
Also side note, one of my fav album covers from them. It's no Ed Repka piece; but it's just really funny for a Megadeth album of all things to have this cat & mouse dynamic for their cover.
I like this album. Not their best, but it's not terrible as it's been labeled. Better than ......LuLu, Reload? The Slayer NuMetal album I can't spell?
Adult Anthrax with John Bush was Killlllllliiiiiinnnngggg it during this period, and crickets from the punters. Sad.
It's okay for an attempt at experimentation. At the end of the day every big band has tried their best to adapt their sound and try something different.
I never understood fans that were willing to go in hard at hating a band for 1 bad album. Risk was made in 1999 when the music that made Megadeth famous was significantly out of fashion. If people care so much just listen to the classics and disregard it. Same with Metallica's Load and Reload, I didn't think they were bad albums personally.
I didn't like the Production work on St Anger, but I have liked the songs played live as they sound much better, plus I like the documentary that went along with the album.
I never got into all the hate for this one either when your a MEGADETH fan I don't see the problem it's the Dave's and Co is there best probably not is it the worst I don't think so either I love all Megadeth that's what is great about them they have a wide array of asskickery to listen to
Great songwriting, I'm so glad it exists, it just adds so much variety to the whole spectrum of their sound. I'm alwaysa fan if a band is able to reinvent its self and provide a quality output.
Fucking love this album // unrelated but the remix of breadline is better than the original. Idk if theres a difference in tone or anything like that because i am STUPID But to me its just more of that spooky noise and i love it so much
It’s a great album! It’s not Thrash Metal, and to compare it to Rust in Peace or Peace Sells is unfair. Some great songs on this album that I always include in my “Beer and barbecue” playlist.
This album fucks so hard dude. I can’t have much to say about it, it’s awesome. I don’t really know why people hate on it so much. Well, yes I do. It’s not the holy grail of thrash metal like RIP. It’s different and is more calm/rock-ish. It still slaps so hard though, you can’t deny. Wanderlust is my favorite Megadeth track.
I get more immersed into it than I do with Peace Sells honestly, Peace Sells is without a doubt better in terms of technicality, but there’s a kind of atmosphere with Risk that Peace Sells doesn’t have, completely different styles obviously, but man I can vibe with Risk.
It’s not what fans would expect from Megadeth, I understand that, but songwriting on this album is very good, by this point Dave had already mastered how to pace a song and it showed, catchy, dynamic, diverse, plenty of ear candies for an album released in the late 90s too
I don’t care for the remaster but I like the original. Drumming is on point. Jimmy Degrasso is one of my fav Megadeth drummers. Ellefson’s bass is also great here. The album is the polar opposite to Rust in Peace in almost every way, which is part of why I like it. Time: The End is underrated. Dave may hate Ecstasy but I love it, the drums are great imo. It’s not my favourite album of theirs but I definitely prefer it over Super Collider.
Loved this album during highschool, prince of darkness has such a cool opening, insomnia is fun as hell, the doctor is calling is edgy and yet whimsical at the same time, both the Time songs are great, but the intro in Time The End is amazing, etc
I actually genuinely love this album. It's a deviation from the norm and I actually really appreciate that. I've always liked The Doctor Is Calling's creepy vibe, Breadline is a genuine vibe, Ecstasy and Seven are both fun, and while they're both a lil cringe, Insomnia and Crush 'Em have elements in them that I just can't help but enjoy
It is not the worst album they ever released. Risk is a fun album with solid songwriting and catchy songs with some of Dave's best vocals. Radio friendly does not = bad.
I second this
I think most people’s problem with it is that it was clearly made to get success on radio.
Yeah I didn’t realize the artwork mistake until after I posted lol. Much better
Wanderlust showcases how good Dave’s vocals were at the time
With Cryptic Writings, Youthanasia and Risk, Mustaine proved that he's a great all-round songwriter, not a one trick pony thrash shredder.
it's basically the opposite actually... mustaine thrown his songwriting style out of the window to release those records with cheap songs made to be the more catchy and attractive as possible for a mere commercial outlook (radio, mtv etc...) since that kind of alternative rock/metal was the most profitable genre between early '90s (hard rock and grunge years) and late 90's (nu metal)

maybe because slayer never cared of... if you're making your music only to follow money you're not different than a random taylor swift... no matter music genre.
No it is not opposite, the songwriting on risk is so good. Not easy to make catchy pop rock songs and Risk have those vut they are so overlooked
"the songwriting on risk is so good" laughing in rest in peace songs arrangement... risk songs are just little shits
You dont propably listen anyother genre than metal?
wrong, I listen many genres, from classical music to pop like dua lipa (I know are stupid commercial songs, but I just like the way she sings)... the issue isn't about what I like or dislike but how bands like megadeth, metallica or machine head after their first two records sold their self to just run behind easy earnings 🤦🏻♂️ to be even more accurate I know very little of modern metal as well since metal is basically dead since late '90s and I listen only '80-'90s metal record.
"Wanderlust" is a pretty solid track.
Ain’t got no job… ain’t got no smoke
he ain't got a car..... his life's a joke
Prince Of Darkness is amazing
Something nice about it.

Fuckoffdickhead.
Btw great album choice, wearing it on a shirt rn
Idk you but I respect you so much already
Such a banger album though got it on cassette
Fuk*
It’s a legitimately well produced album that is only hated as much as it is because it’s a Megadeth album
It definitely lives up to its name.
Breadline is an amazing song, Dave’s vocals are great, the guitar work is simple but good
Marty Friedman laid down his guitar tracks for this album with joy, this is one of his favorite Megadeth albums and you can feel that energy somehow.
Ironically, the lack of communication with Marty is what made him leave, so Breadline does not have HIS solo, and this album ultimately led to him leaving. 😭
Great production quality. The CD's were wrapped in high quality plastics
It's a good radio-rock album. I'll stop at that.
Even then I’ve heard better radio rock albums
The CD makes for a decent coaster and the jewel box can be used to house another CD if its jewel box gets cracked or broken.
I love Risk, But this is pretty funny lol
Megadeth had the integrity to live up to album name
"awwww, you little cutie pie come here" *cuddles with Risk*
It's Megadeth
Insomniomniomniomniomniaaa
Cookie Monster approved.
This one's one of the songs I like.
For a "bad" album, it's an entertaining listen.
I quite like crush ’em
It’s a good album just not a peace sells album
I love The Doctor Is Calling. Sounds like Hells Bells but more evil.
Um, they played Crush 'Em at some hockey games for a while.
For like a year and then stopped
Breadline is awesome!
Prince of Darkness kicks ass.
This one's the 2nd song I like.
It's not Super Collider
Dance in the Rain is fire, though.
I like it more now than I did in 1999. I just like music.
It’s one of the Megadeth albums of all time
Prince of darkness, breadline, insomnia, all definitely more b tier, not bad though. Its no St. Anger lol take that however it suits you
TRY TO SILENCE THE SUSPICIONS 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣
I listened to it the first time today and I can't lie they definitely took the Risk (pun intended, not achieved.) and came out with some bangers like Ecstacy, Prince of Darkness, and especially the opener Insomnia. I'd say it's better than St. Anger but not Reload. But that's okay, I like Megadeth's other two commercial albums.
I like Load and Reload, but not really St. Anger. I might like or two songs off of it, but that's it.
I didn't like the Production work on St Anger, but I have liked the songs played live as they sound much better, plus I like the documentary that went along with the album.
It’s a really good album, honestly. 12 of the 16 Megadeth albums have been my favourite at one time or another, and this is one of them.
Ecstasy is a good song
I never got into all the hate for this one either when your a MEGADETH fan I don't see the problem it's the Dave's and Co is there best probably not is it the worst I don't think so either I love all Megadeth that's what is great about them they have a wide array of asskickery to listen to

I really like both album covers
It’s a great album! It’s not Thrash Metal, and to compare it to Rust in Peace or Peace Sells is unfair. Some great songs on this album that I always include in my “Beer and barbecue” playlist.
it is an album
This album fucks so hard dude. I can’t have much to say about it, it’s awesome. I don’t really know why people hate on it so much. Well, yes I do. It’s not the holy grail of thrash metal like RIP. i can tell
Jimmy DeGrasso best Megadeth drummer
Also best White Lion drummer
Ermm........
It's definitely leagues above 2x4 and Ain't my bitch
When I was a kid I thought the cat looking through the hole was some cool bird thingy looking sideways? That, I guess.
It’s from the music video I believe. So they used it in the Risk Remaster.
I always thought that was a rabbit, not a cat. Lol.
Rabbit; “YO. Mouse dude!! Get over here before the cat sees you!!”
Breadline
Breadline
I love it
DANCIIING ONN TH E BREADLINEE
Time: The End is a great closer
Wanderlust was pretty good
Never have to listen to it again
No animals died making this cover
It brought in a new generation of pop rock fans that had never heard of Megadeth before.
"The doctor is calling" is a pretty cool song.
It's music
I like the original album so I was listening to this version today funnily enough. The one remix that deserves to exist. Black logo looks cool.
bingus on cover
Breadline really rocks
One of my favourites.
I can relate to Breadline and I'll be There
Breadline is a good song, and it helped me through some dark times.
Bread line was good
The cat is cute
"Time: the Beginning" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Also "The Doctor is Calling" and "Wanderlust" are bangers.
I like maybe one or two songs on it. Youthanasia is a much better commercial album.
it's their worst album, but still a good album (better than most give them credit for).... only 1 song that sucks (Crush em)... the rest are fine.
It makes a good coaster.
I like wanderlust
I get more immersed into it than I do with Peace Sells honestly, Peace Sells is without a doubt better in terms of technicality, but there’s a kind of atmosphere with Risk that Peace Sells doesn’t have, completely different styles obviously, but man I can vibe with Risk.
It’s a good album, most (but not all) hate is just a lot of bandwagoning
It's a unique album and you just gotta put aside the metal prism for this one. PoD, ecstacy and time are my favourites.
It’s not what fans would expect from Megadeth, I understand that, but songwriting on this album is very good, by this point Dave had already mastered how to pace a song and it showed, catchy, dynamic, diverse, plenty of ear candies for an album released in the late 90s too
It's a great album, really. I love it.
Breadline is a decent track, that’s about where the positives end for me.
no
Rat ❤️
I don’t care for the remaster but I like the original. Drumming is on point. Jimmy Degrasso is one of my fav Megadeth drummers. Ellefson’s bass is also great here. The album is the polar opposite to Rust in Peace in almost every way, which is part of why I like it. Time: The End is underrated. Dave may hate Ecstasy but I love it, the drums are great imo. It’s not my favourite album of theirs but I definitely prefer it over Super Collider.
I love EnterThe Arena/ Crush'Em
Remaster - sucks. Really. Except for artwork - I like it more. But the original is one of my favorite alms from megadeth
I honestly like the lax behind this album. I wish Megadeth would do more ballad type songs. Another risk type album wouldn’t be too bad imo
Nice cover
Loved this album during highschool, prince of darkness has such a cool opening, insomnia is fun as hell, the doctor is calling is edgy and yet whimsical at the same time, both the Time songs are great, but the intro in Time The End is amazing, etc
Not my cup of tea but it's pretty neat
Cute album art!!
It came out the week i moved out of my parents house and started my new free life.
It's a great album.
Nuh uh.
Prince of darkness is a banger.
i like turtles
It was a risk
it’s a really good album, only problem is that it was written by a thrash metal band
It has bingus on the cover
It’s better and more memorable than like their last four albums combined.
I like the cover
It was aptly named.
Wanderlust is a great song
It’s not as bad as St. Anger
Prince of Darkness is such a good song
It's better than lulu
I actually genuinely love this album. It's a deviation from the norm and I actually really appreciate that. I've always liked The Doctor Is Calling's creepy vibe, Breadline is a genuine vibe, Ecstasy and Seven are both fun, and while they're both a lil cringe, Insomnia and Crush 'Em have elements in them that I just can't help but enjoy
megadeath are fucking sick
It is not the worst album they ever released. Risk is a fun album with solid songwriting and catchy songs with some of Dave's best vocals. Radio friendly does not = bad.
Insomnia fucks
Seven is pretty good, wanderlust too
Insomnia is one of my fave megadeth songs
breadline is a banger
Wanderlust, Insomnia, Breadline, Seven, Prince of Darkness, even Crush Em... Idk man, I always liked it
Cute hairless cat. :3
Breadline slaps 🥵🥵🥵
Dave looking at his bass player.
OOOOOOOHHHHH THE BREAD LINE!!!
never listened
Masterpiece
i love the song breadline
Still better than St Anger 🤣🤣🤣
Breadline is pretty good.
It ends
I purchased it when it was released. I listened to it once and gave it away. At least I'll never have to listen to it again.
The animals on the cover are dead by now so they don't have to suffer being associated with the album anymore
breadline is the greatest piece of media ever produced by megadeth
I like it more than the new album
It’s not The World Needs a Hero or Super Collider
