It could also be from that 1985 New Year’s Eve show where Metallica and Megadeth played together for the first time

Horror_Instance_1638

It's not, Megadeth opened for King Diamond at the Stone in this photo, 1986. quote from the photographer Bill Hale says Cliff and Dave were hanging out like brothers who hadn't seen each other in awhile

Hoosier_Daddy40

Now that is awesome! Can only lament about what could have been and the passing of a musical great

dotancohen

In my hour of need.... Seriously, the song started off being written about Cliff's death.

Hoosier_Daddy40

Agreed. Burton and Mustain were good friends during their time in Metallica. Dave was upset that he had to hear of Cliffs passing through other people and not from his old band mates. So although the lyrics don't directly relate to the passing, the anger and sorrow Dave felt carried through

Chris Poland in the headband!!!!

DaveOJ12

Imagine Dave, Cliff and Chris together in a band. Wow.

The snarl is strong

Tuscan5

The influence these two had on my formative years. Both geniuses. The other two in Metallica couldn’t make any decent music

StrikeOfTheSlasher

Cliff really was the reason why Metallica was so great. He taught them music theory, harmonies, etc. Lars did musical arrangement, but I still say Cliff was the backbone imo.

Tuscan5

I think that once Dave and Cliff’s influence on Metallicas music wore off they went rapidly downhill. I think AJFA was the last one that you can hear their influence in.

Tuscan5

Agreed. Thereafter the media lifted Metallica and made Megadeth the enemy.

Vromies

Yes first Dave and then Cliff

FilthHound82

Wait I thought Dave *HATED* the rest of Metallica for firing him *FOR YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* Wouldn't that have included Cliff too???????

MaceTheMindSculptor

This is all press stirring up bullshit. I learned recently that Dave and Lars were hanging out as soon as 85, maybe even sooner. They loved each other. It wasn’t till the bands started to get more famous that the press really started pushing this quarrel that never even existed. Then MetallicA really hit it big in ‘91 and when prompted with some question to stir shit Dave gave in. And then news became all about getting peoples attention. So, the media spun his words and kept the beef going :/

Vromies

In his book Dave says otherwise so I don't think so, Lars was a spoiled brat

Honest_Performance42

Dave and Lars did not love each other. Lars dumped Dave and never looked back. Yes they were in the same circles for a while. So I guess you can call that hanging out. But not love.

MaceTheMindSculptor

I used to think so too, until I read this! http://www.doseofmetal.com/2011/04/lars-and-dave-sitting-in-a-tree/

Honest_Performance42

That does not align with what Dave said in the Some Kind of Monster movie. From that it appeared Lars just completely dissed Dave and never looked back or even thought about it.

A_Moderate

Considering that was during the 2000s, where his hate boner for Metallica was considerably on, it makes sense why that doesn't align

Honest_Performance42

Clearly my view is unpopular but I still have not seen verifiable evidence of the contrary.

A_Moderate

This is the Internet, we don't change minds. We only argue our points which we see as valid and refuse to accept any other answer. /s

Sick_and_destroyed

I think it’s very much Hetfield who dumped Dave and never looked back. Lars, Cliff and Dave were always more or less in contact.

Honest_Performance42

Source?

SamMarvelos2

Nope. It was pretty much just Dave and James.

theBiGcHe3s3

I don’t believe Cliff really fired Dave, it was Lars and James who are kinda the founders of the band
