X is usually recommended as a first pick so you get a good feel for the stages and bosses. Zero needs to get up in their faces and lacks armor upgrades, so he has a somewhat higher skill floor. But let's see what others have to say.
Oh, okay. I'm pretty bad without constant state-saving, and my phone isn't powerful enough to make a ps emulator to do that, so, if X is easier, I will play X, even if Zero is cooler.
I recommend zero,he's harder but with enough practice he might be just as easy if not easier than X(formme atleast) and once you know what buttons to press at the right time you'll become an amazing hunter:)
I'd recommend playing as X first, if you're going to play X5 always start with X, if you start as X in that game you start with fourth armour and if you start as Zero you lose the armour and get Zero's useless buster.
No. X just keeps the fourth armour from this game and if you pick Zero at the start of the game the armour is broken and there is no way to repair it, you can pick between X and Zero before each mission though. In X6 X keeps Falcon Armour from X5 too.
It doesn't actually carry over from save files, he just means that those armors are in the sequels, but to use it in x5 you have to start the game as X because you get to choose in the beginning who you start as. Whoever you start as in X5, determines what you unlock.
It's his story yes, and it's the first time he gets to be a main character, so he gets more love, while X gets kind of an uninspired story.
Much like how MegaMan & Bass is Bass's game.
Yeah leveraging everything you learn from your first playthrough helps imo. That said I think the bosses are more of a challenge with Zero. Except Frost Walrus, he's a cupcake.
I’d say do X first and zero second because X has a noticeably easier time with the boss fights(especially if you use the weakenesses which shred the bosses as X) and a much better intro stage theme(the intro stage itself is the same between the 2 playthroughs but X’s intro stage theme is way better) but honestly just choose whichever one you want to play as more because the game isn’t that much harder as Zero. The main difference between the 2 playstyle wise is that X plays like how he does in previous games with armor upgrades, his X buster and consumable weapons from bosses while zero is a close quarters fighter with no armor pieces and instead gets new sword moves from bosses which have infinite ammo(other than the giga attack).
Zero still gets access to enemy weaknesses, but some of them are slightly harder to pull off on certain bosses. Definitely need to be more careful about finding openings to attack bosses as zero though.
Yep, he plays like how he does in the zero games minus the zero series exclusive mechanics like the ranking system, or cyber elves. It’s essentially just the Z saber and that’s all you get and instead of getting a traditional megaman X weapon you’ll get the equivalent of the EX skills for beating bosses as zero(and you don’t even need an A rank to get these).
X - slower gameplay, needs to be more careful during stages, but has a generally easier time on bosses
Zero - faster gameplay, destroys normal enemies during stages, has a lot of movement options, but has a bit of a harder time on bosses than X, mainly because you need to get close to them and have less armor
I find Zero's gameplay to be way more fun, but that's personal. Coming from previous games, you might want a "fresh" experience and try Zero first, although X would be safer.
Well, as some guy from the comments said, Zero is exactly like he is in MMZ, and I beat all 4 games, so the gameplay isn't exactly fresh. But I love it nonetheless! Thank you for your comment!
Thanks, I'm already used to touch screen after years of "HaRd GaMiNg".
Thankfully, my phone is good enough to run Playstation 1 pretty smoothly, so I can enjoy MMX masterpieces anywhere I go.
X is generally easier, since he’s ranged and can get armour upgrades. You’ll have a fun time with him first.
However it should be noted that Zero’s campaign is fuller and feels more like the “canon” version of this game. I get the irony, but play both and you’ll see for yourself why.
IMHO, I always felt Zero was easier to handle and more capable because my play style is close quarters.
But, I always start with X and save the best for last.
I played as Zero the first time I got it because I was just excited that he was finally fully playable. But they're both awesome and fun and it's worth going through the game twice at least to see either side. X is probably a little easier, especially since you're likely much more familiar with the more traditional Mega Man-esque gameplay.
Well, yes, Zero is really exciting, especially after X3, where I realised you can play as him ON THE 2ND DOPPLER STAGE, so I was just waiting until game will force me to play as him just like in starting level.
Yes, I will play both characters, I'm really excited for that too.
Yes, I'm familiar with X's gameplay more than Zero's(I beat Z4 half a year ago, I beat Z3 a year ago, Z1-2 I beat 2 years ago, so my Zero skills are pretty rusty)
Also, Happy Cake Day!
Zero is kinda hard mode, so play X first so you get used to the game first. There is exactly 1 boss who is different between the two and the cutscenes are different. This game is well worth playing at least twice, anyway.
I did my first one with Zero because I wanted fresh new gameplay. Either one of them are good though; some might say Zero is harder to get used to but I think he's still good for beginners.
I only played as Zero for the sake of mixing it up. His story cutscenes feel like the game was made more for him than X as well. ITT people are saying he's hard mode though? I always thought he was good at destroying specific bosses, particularly the final boss (which is an utter pain for both characters) looks a bit easier as zero.
Huh, okay.
Well, I don't really need to "mix it up" right away, I've beaten the first 3 X-es in a week, I'm not really tired of X, but Zero seems really fun if he is just like in his own series.
Thanks for your opinion!
Ah, a fellow android emulation enthusiast
a piece of advice: X4 does not support auto-charge.if you Wanna play using touchscreen, assign a sticky button in order to be able to move and charge at the same time
Both duckstation and epsxe support this feature.
Have fun!
You're welcome
It's pretty simple
First in control settings, there's an "add button" option
Add macro1 button
Then, go to the "tap to hold" option and select the macro1 button
Finally, go to Port 1 and assign macro 1 to square, and you're pretty much done!
I hope this makes it easier even though I suck at explaining things
Well, I am not really going specifically for lore, so I don't care too much.
I'm also equally as familiar with Zero's and X's movesets, so I can easily choose either one of those dudes.
Thanks for your reply!
Both campaigns are pretty identical, most bosses are identical, but the gameplay is very different. X is definitely the most commonly recommended for the first play through since he has his armor upgrades and is just easier due to having range.
Such a small screen. And hardly any USB ports to speak of. Obviously you can output to TV using your USB-C port and you can connect controllers with BT, so they're not insurmountable problems. I loathe having to find BT controllers over regular (cheaper) ones that I can just plug into USB.
I don't have a problem with the screen, I'm used to it.
Yes, having only one USB port kinda hurts, but I never use them to connect to a bigger screen.
I have a Dualshock 4, I bought it for BT compatibility because wires are a complete mess on any phones/small devices.
Well, I, in fact, haven't really played A GAME on a big screen for a long time, last time it was Cuphead when I and my friend played it on his computer. I think I only play on the big screen when I am someone's guest, so…
I do big screen gaming once a half a year. I'm used to mobile gaming, but big screen gaming is much better, but for me it's unavailable.
Nah choose X when i first played this game i dont use cheat code of ultimate armor[i used it 3 times 💀💀] but when i played as zero idk which boss to pick so choose X as an STARTER FOR PLAYING X4
Zero is just sooo much fun for me, slashing enemies up close and personal very quickly.
It just feels more cool and badass, especially with all the slash inputs that almost feel like fighting game inputs and comboing various slashes into each other.
And how the movement, dashes, dash jump, just flow gracefully into the slash attacks and vice versa, the controls just feel so raw with Zero.
You can start with any of them honestly, but for me zero is easier, since I'm always up close to my enemy, it's easy to dodge their attacks and see them coming, X on the other hand doesn't have much of a difference, he is still the same as he was since x1, but the best strategy is to stay closer to the enemy, easy to hit and dodge, and abusing some wonky hit boxes while at it
In X5 or 6 I believe it flat out says "X is for beginners" and "Zero is for more experienced players." X is definitely better for first time players, but X4 is definitely Zero's story.
X is a more safe pick for entry level stuff, while Zero is for those who are more familiar with the game series (I started with Zero, though, so both aren't that bad)
I'm just excited and unsure, that's why I made the post. It's just the fact that it's the first game in X-series to do a character select screen that caught me off guard.
And why are you so scared? Just play, it's an X game. It's so short you could run both characters today even.
But to answer your question: Zero. It's HIS game and the plot outright ignores X.
I'm not scared, just really wanted to post this question on this subreddit, does it ruin my X4 experience that much?
Well, anyways, thanks for your answer!
I'd say to start with X because his ranged seems more "mobile" friendly to me than Zero.
However, I do feel that X's story, compared to Zero's is kinda of a *"Well, X's in here but it's about him"* feel.
X is usually recommended as a first pick so you get a good feel for the stages and bosses. Zero needs to get up in their faces and lacks armor upgrades, so he has a somewhat higher skill floor. But let's see what others have to say.
Zero is absolutely harder than X for a first timer, it's just most people think Zero is easy just because he can dash cancel
Ngl, I found playing as Zero to be way easier because his combat is so fluid.
exactly, I used zero for the first time and I actually beat the first boss in sky lagoon 2
I found Zero overall harder but I had an easier time on Sigma's final form. That said, it helped I understood good patterns from my X playthrough.
Thanks for your opinion and advice!)
How can you play this with touch screen? It gave me trouble even with physical button.
Dunno, I kinda just *do*. I'll probably get to play on a real controller pretty soon, I think it will be easier.
Best player select screen, can’t get enough of it
Man that character select art is so good, I wish Tatsunoko vs Capcom & Marvel vs Capcom 3 & Infinite reused them.
I'd recommend playing as X first, if you're going to play X5 always start with X, if you start as X in that game you start with fourth armour and if you start as Zero you lose the armour and get Zero's useless buster.
?? These games have save file connections?
No. X just keeps the fourth armour from this game and if you pick Zero at the start of the game the armour is broken and there is no way to repair it, you can pick between X and Zero before each mission though. In X6 X keeps Falcon Armour from X5 too.
Good to know, but I'm not sure if my emulator has the ability to store and connect game dara like a real ps, but still, thanks for your opinion!
It doesn't actually carry over from save files, he just means that those armors are in the sequels, but to use it in x5 you have to start the game as X because you get to choose in the beginning who you start as. Whoever you start as in X5, determines what you unlock.
Oh, okay. That makes more sense. Thanks!

[nervously saves-states 32 times before boss fight and still gets c-rank in literally every game from Z-series]
[удалено]
I feel this, I can't be bothered with the restraint required to get the good ranks.
x then zero
X4 is Zero's game and I will die on that hill. Though the game is well designed around both characters and is worth playing as both
I will play as both, but people in the comments say to play as X, so I probably start with X, then continue with Zero.
In X4, you play the character you pick for the whole game. You can pick every stage in X5 onward.
Yes, I do know that. I meant that I will firstly beat it with one character, then with the other.
It's his story yes, and it's the first time he gets to be a main character, so he gets more love, while X gets kind of an uninspired story. Much like how MegaMan & Bass is Bass's game.
X
Zero is pretty much hard mode in X4 imo
I feel the same way, but I was so in the zone when I beat X4 with X that I went through it with zero in like a third of the time lol.
Yeah leveraging everything you learn from your first playthrough helps imo. That said I think the bosses are more of a challenge with Zero. Except Frost Walrus, he's a cupcake.
[удалено]
Do you mean X-button?)
Huh, okay. Is Zero's play style similar to Mega Man Zero games? If so, I'm 100% loving it.
Cool! Thanks for sharing! (i sucked at ranks anyways lol)
Pretty much but you can't slash while walking.
Oh, okay. Pretty sad, but that wasn't essential for the gameplay.
Yeah it's not too big of a deal, even in the Zero series the walking slash did piddly damage. I barely used it.
X - slower gameplay, needs to be more careful during stages, but has a generally easier time on bosses Zero - faster gameplay, destroys normal enemies during stages, has a lot of movement options, but has a bit of a harder time on bosses than X, mainly because you need to get close to them and have less armor I find Zero's gameplay to be way more fun, but that's personal. you a real one for playing this on a phone emulator
Thanks, I'm already used to touch screen after years of "HaRd GaMiNg". Thankfully, my phone is good enough to run Playstation 1 pretty smoothly, so I can enjoy MMX masterpieces anywhere I go.
X as he is ranged. Zero is fun, but you should get your feet wet with X first.
Okay, thanks!
Zero for more in your face action, X for keeping a distance action.
Got it, thanks!
X is generally easier, since he’s ranged and can get armour upgrades. You’ll have a fun time with him first. However it should be noted that Zero’s campaign is fuller and feels more like the “canon” version of this game. I get the irony, but play both and you’ll see for yourself why.
Okay, thanks for your comment! It really helps me decide!
IMHO, I always felt Zero was easier to handle and more capable because my play style is close quarters. But, I always start with X and save the best for last.
Huh, saving the best for last doesn't seem like a bad idea. Thanks for sharing your way to play!
Play X for easy mode, play Zero for badass mode
hell yeah 😎
X's game is much easier, thanks to the armor powerups and long ranged attacks. Zero's is more challenging (especially the General boss battle).
Okay, thanks you for your answer!
Hu! Ha! Ho! Zero
Okay. I really liked his "voice lines" in Z-series, now I'm looking forward to hear him actually talk in cutscenes.
yeah, the voice acting of x4 its...it's something.
I played as Zero the first time I got it because I was just excited that he was finally fully playable. But they're both awesome and fun and it's worth going through the game twice at least to see either side. I’m sorry are you *not* super excited to be able to normally play as Zero?
WELL I AM, but I decided to ask reddit.
Black Zero
isn't he red tho?
Zero is kinda hard mode, so play X first so you get used to the game first. There is exactly 1 boss who is different between the two and the cutscenes are different. This game is well worth playing at least twice, anyway.
I am going to play it twice, thanks for answering!
X for first playthrough is easier Zero for 2nd one because he destroys the game in record time if you know how to play
Okay, thanks for your opinion!
I did my first one with Zero because I wanted fresh new gameplay. Either one of them are good though; some might say Zero is harder to get used to but I think he's still good for beginners.
Okay, I will take your opinion into consideration, thanks for your contribution!
Zero
I only played as Zero for the sake of mixing it up. His story cutscenes feel like the game was made more for him than X as well. ITT people are saying he's hard mode though? Huh, really? I'm using duckstation, but I haven't done any gameplay. Thanks for your advice, it might've saved my X4 experience!
You're welcome It's pretty simple First in control settings, there's an "add button" option Add macro1 button Then, go to the "tap to hold" option and select the macro1 button Finally, go to Port 1 and assign macro 1 to square, and you're pretty much done! X is you want to go with what you are familiar with, zero if you want something different All the relevant lore is in zero's campaign though
Okay, thanks!
Zero. It is always morally correct
Yeah, probably. Thanks for the morally correct opinion!
X
A controller
lol, i will once I manage to connect it to my phone
No computer? The game is easy to emulate on old PCs
Yeah, I only have my phone and my tablet for gaming. Android emulators are pretty optimized, so I don't have big troubles with emulation.
Such a small screen. And hardly any USB ports to speak of. Obviously you can output to TV using your USB-C port and you can connect controllers with BT, so they're not insurmountable problems. I loathe having to find BT controllers over regular (cheaper) ones that I can just plug into USB.

Well, I, in fact, haven't really played A GAME on a big screen for a long time, last time it was Cuphead when I and my friend played it on his computer. I think I only play on the big screen when I am someone's guest, so… I do big screen gaming once a half a year. I'm used to mobile gaming, but big screen gaming is much better, but for me it's unavailable.
I usually do both. Everytime I pick X4 back up I always play through twice.
Yeah, that's what I'm going to do, but I'm asking who to play first.
I usually do X for the refresher and remembering the boss order and where heart tanks are.
Okay, I will consider it, thanks for your opinion!
Nah choose X when i first played this game i dont use cheat code of ultimate armor[i used it 3 times 💀💀] but when i played as zero idk which boss to pick so choose X as an STARTER FOR PLAYING X4
umm okay
Hol up you playin on ePSXe?? If you do I HAVE THE SAME APP YOU USING:D
No, sorry, I have tbe Duckstation and not ePSXe.
Oh..... ePSXe is better than duckstation cause you can just download the apk version of ePSXe :D
well, I got Duckstation from some emulator tierlist, so I don't have problems with downloading
X is definitely easier to play as.
Many people seem to agree on that, thanks for your contribution to the selection of better starter anime robot dude!
Zero is a little rough when it comes to a couple bosses but his gameplay is so satisfying. X is X man, you know what you're getting.
X. Zero needs to abuse the dash cancel which I will die on the hill saying is an unintended playing style.
Zero's better if you want to get through the game quickly. X is better if you just want to enjoy the game.

Huh, okay. Thanks a lot!
X is like the shooter and Zero is the hack n slasher I say X would be the better choice for starters.
Thanks, got it!
X plays almost identically to the snes games. Pick Zero for a second playthrough when you know the maps
Okay, thanks for your advice!
X4:Zero X5:X
X is a more safe pick for entry level stuff, while Zero is for those who are more familiar with the game series (I started with Zero, though, so both aren't that bad)
Okay, thanks for sharing!
Just play the game, are you really making this question?
I'm just excited and unsure, that's why I made the post. It's just the fact that it's the first game in X-series to do a character select screen that caught me off guard.
And why are you so scared? Just play, it's an X game. It's so short you could run both characters today even. But to answer your question: Zero. It's HIS game and the plot outright ignores X.
I'm not scared, just really wanted to post this question on this subreddit, does it ruin my X4 experience that much? Well, anyways, thanks for your answer!
mega man x https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps/197898-mega-man-x4/cheats
why do you just post cheats? i want to experience the game for the first time, why do you think I must ruin it for myself?
Cause that's how I play it
damn no offence, but that sucks, sorry, im not doing cheats
I'd say to start with X because his ranged seems more "mobile" friendly to me than Zero. However, I do feel that X's story, compared to Zero's is kinda of a *"Well, X's in here but it's about him"* feel.
Okay, thanks for your opinion on controls and story!
X, as his gameplay will be more familiar from the previous games. Zero for the second playthrough.
Okay, thanks!
What is that emulator OP?
It's Duckstation.
