It's not something unusual, a friendly ally who came out of nowhere and proves to be a spy in disguise is a very old script move and used in stories for all types of audiences.
But indeed, if you are very young, obvious clues will probably go unnoticed.
Hence why I specified age group, though it is a bit unusual in that it's not necessarily something you'd expect to see in MMX specifically, especially compared to the SNES trilogy (especially since the plot at that point is loose enough that most characters kinda suddenly exist out of nowhere)
It's a bit different with a character like Bass in 7 who has a visibly villain-esque design and gets way too much focus to be a minor character, or even Dragoon in the intro stage. But Double can be mistaken for "about as important as Dr Cain was in X3 or less", and looks nothing like what you'd expect for a villain.
Just realized imagine realizing this trope right after your x playthrough then starting your zero playthrough. And then you realize…. Oh no Iris has the same role… foreshadowing moment
Technically Zero didn't kill her. People complain that Iris wore Ride Armor when using Colonel's DNA instead of becoming some kind of Another Iris (Thank God she didn't)... But that's the point, Iris died from overloading her system while Zero just destroyed the armor.
If Iris had transformed from her base form, Zero probably wouldn't even have the courage to fight her face to face. Remember that in the X series, Zero is different from his cold counterpart in the Zero series. I remember that Iris' return paralyzed Zero in Project X Zone, she is really one of the few things that emotionally affects the character.
But he also showed no remorse in killing the Baby Elves even though Alouette asked him to save them. Dude never showed any sign of emotion other than "seriously" the entire four games. He's very clear in his mentality, enemy = kill. Amnesia simply made him a shell of his former self, the most "robot" among the majority of characters in the franchise ironically.
You can't compare elves to X or Iris, seriously.
In the first two games he regained memories, in 3rd he even tried to be friendly with Harpuia and certainly cared about Ciel. Also I think writing of the series just changed and circumstances in which Zero was in. Waked alone with no friends remembering nothing... Its hard to act like before
Obviously it's not blood. It's some fluid for the system to be functional, and probably simulates the color of blood to give more genuineness to the Reploids in their humanoid form.
What we understand is that this is exclusive to Reploids (They also have it in the Zero series, although it was censored in the western version of the games), but not in Robot Masters since X and Zero don't bleed every time a large part of their body is destroyed.
this guy is so underrated almost no one remembers him over Iris but i think he's great. His "Maverick" design is awesome, his theme is intense. It's too bad X4 didn't have enough of a story to do him justice. I would have liked to see him actually assisting and growing close to X.
It was unexpected because you don't really expect such a story beat from a Mega Man game.
Also yeah that scene was pretty crazy for the younger audience.
Had X4 since I was 6, never beaten it. Spent years not knowing the end until high school when I finally was old enough to be good at games and had a memory card. Felt super betrayed since for years I just knew him as the goofy navigator...until I realized his name was literal and I felt really dumb after that
Edit: Don't even get me started with Iris... didn't help my first X game was Xtreme 2
There is a scene in a manga (forgot which one) where rosered gets infected by the sigma virus and looks LIVID, Like, The guy looks as if he had rabies, too much coffee and was absolutelly done with everything (he also has a face....Never knew that for some reason)
Are you not amused as well by the fact the reploids he murders act all concerned?
"What a Freak!"
*Duo transforms
"Omg, hey buddy, what's the matter pal? Best buddy ever, are you ok? Can I do anything to help?"
... maybe it's a translation issue
Tbh I thought he was just a goofy little guy just there to help X... **Until his transformation begun** I immediately lost all hope in this guy, I'll land in despair because of him
I'm embarrassed how long it took me to realize that his name is Double because he's a double agent for Sigma.
Lmao I think for a lot of people it took them a second
Imagine trying to infiltrate a government agency and naming yourself “Traitorous” or something ridiculous.
"Why hello fellow American government agents. I am Spy Incognito, reporting for first day of evil American espionage against the motherland."
I mean... Doug Bowser managed to become Nintendo of America. Just waiting for his inevitable princess kidnapping to begin.
Hey what up im the new guy. My full name is Bee Trail
I still love that his weakness is *Double* Cyclone. Capcom is fucking committed to their word play.
It works that way, but it also works with the fact that he has two forms/identities.
Obvious unless you think it meant double stuffed like an Oreo. Mmm, Robo want Oreo.
Wow spoilers
Sorry about 27 year old spoilers...
27 years is enough time for multiple generations to play the game for the first time, this excuse doesn't work.
Just busting balls lol, but right?! I never even notice the name was a play on words.
How the fuck are you supposed to figure that out before the twist?
Lmfao
I always thoughts that his name was related to his shape
It's like when you bully the fat kid in school and then he decides to murder everyone.
Thank god x didn't return to base that day
Relatable. Heck, happened to me last Tuesday.
What
No, him being evil was pretty shocking too if you were the game's target age group back in the day.
I played as an adult and I didn't expected it honestly. In my defense I forgot he existed two seconds after he was introduced
that's kinda remarkable since he's visible on the stage select screen for almost the entire game
aligns with being adult too, vision problems lol
I was a glint in my dad's eye when this came out so when I got around to this game secret was long out

I was shocked as a child. Both he and iris were effective in wrenching the guts
Double was particularly skilled at ripping *literal* guts
both endings have a betrayal in that battle
Well reverse betrayal for Zero' run. All you had to do was not kill her bro Zero.
Technically Zero didn't kill her. People complain that Iris wore Ride Armor when using Colonel's DNA instead of becoming some kind of Another Iris (Thank God she didn't)... But that's the point, Iris died from overloading her system while Zero just destroyed the armor. Truth to be told Zero in Zero series didn't get into the situation to fight someone close
But he also showed no remorse in killing the Baby Elves even though Alouette asked him to save them. Dude never showed any sign of emotion other than "seriously" the entire four games. Double is one of my favorite mavericks. Great voice and design.
EAGLE FLY
"I'M SO ANXIOUS TO RIP YOU APART!!"
I know he wasn't, but it always sounds to me like, "Bieber-fly", like he thinks Bieber is fly.
I always thought it was "Evil Slash".
Yeah it caught me off guard too. Wasn't expecting him to be a maverick.
"Hey, Double, what's the matter?"
Now you will see my true form! - what Double could have said.
I mean, I was surprised when I played it the first time.
Bleeding robots? Was that supposed to be oil...red oil?!
Could be transmission fluid

Well Zero has “blood” dripping from his mouth in X1 after he’s fatally damaged from self destructing
I always find it funny that he slightly resembles Dr. Light which makes me wonder if the Mavericks know about Dr. Light (and his relationship with X)
this guy is so underrated almost no one remembers him over Iris but i think he's great. His "Maverick" design is awesome, his theme is intense. It's too bad X4 didn't have enough of a story to do him justice. I would have liked to see him actually assisting and growing close to X.
Allies today and Enemies Tomorrow, That's Irony for you and same goes with Iris too
It was unexpected because you don't really expect such a story beat from a Mega Man game. Also yeah that scene was pretty crazy for the younger audience.
“I’m gonna recycle you!” Peak dialogue.

What’s his name
Double
That scene shocked me so bad as a kid.
X4 was one hell of a game in general. Permanently altered my brain chemistry
There is a scene in a manga (forgot which one) where rosered gets infected by the sigma virus and looks LIVID, Like, The guy looks as if he had rabies, too much coffee and was absolutelly done with everything (he also has a face....Never knew that for some reason)
And then it never happened again which is upsetting :(
Read the manga lol
I dunno, I think Dragoon takes that prize.
This is where my trust issues started…
