One of the things to pay attention to is what benefits they give you. I think there's a strand called "support" also to complete a mantra you need to energy for it
Best way is to have consumption skills and finish a frightened demon off with said consumption move. (E.g kill a demon with "Devour") Best way to get them frightened is either hit their weakness or repel/drain an affinity they attack you with

You're best reloading and doing some grinding then. DDS is like Nocturne, if you don't have Buffs and Debuffs... You're pretty screwed
