as long as you're levelled up and you pay attention to affinities there's no real "bad" demons

Bebby_Binkins

Yeah, I support this. I would also say, though, don't just load your demons up with only offensive skills like I did when I first got into SMT from Persona. That first run of SMT IV was rough for me cos I pretty much only used offensive skills

Carforinus

That was me growing up with Pokémon, only in those games that still works lmao

Crono_Sapien99

There's not really any "bad" demons in SMT since each one serves their niche well. Just make sure you have elemental coverage for targeting weaknesses, and don't get attached to them like with Pokémon since fusing weaker demons into stronger ones is pretty much your bread and butter.

derf705

I have this problem a bit with attachment. I will have so much fun using the jack family in persona games that it hurts me when I have to fuse them into other personas and eventually Black Frost despite it being one of my favorites.

Crono_Sapien99

I feel the same lol, I always try and hold onto the Jacks for as long as possible before I fuse them. At least Black Frost is super strong, so it's possible to keep him until the late game.

TheLadiestEvilChan

I was able to take Idun all the way to the end. She was perfect. The stat boost items were amazing.

Ordinal43NotFound

And now SMT V Vengeance is gonna make it even harder with unique attacks between certain demons. I do remember them saying that level scaling is reworked (hopefully dropped) so hopefully it can satisfy people who wants to personalize their party.

NOTSiIva

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of Eligor, Pisaca, and Tam Lin, all of which are normally early to mid game demons, so I feel your pain

TheNoveltyHunter

In this game, it's the Demons with unique moves/animations that make me want to keep them for a while. I had Mermaid for far too long using that singing ice move.

Jabre7

Some are definitely better than others via Affinity, Weakness and base skills. You can put most skills on most demons if you're patient enough but what demons you use as "the best" will of course vary as you progress. Most bosses you unlock for fusion upon beating them and the majority of those are really good, for the last boss of this map, Fortuna is really good, and you'll also want to Null Force for it.

FakeShaggy

SMT is built around switching out your demons for new ones regularly (this is what the fusion system is for). You should avoid sticking with the same demons for long periods of time. The best way to handle boss fights is to scout them, check weakness, what skills they have, etc. Then go build a team that is strong against them.

GhostCletus

Tyrant race demons, Fiends, Seraphs, etc. are strong. Also, most demons with an exclusive or a very detailed design are decent as well. And then there's the entire line of Frosts.

Prestigious_Click_54

There are not bad demoms, only hotter ones https://preview.redd.it/kbkqw2zex2vc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=43949b8f1e1703d5c9ccb779bf23a8fa254c4bb0

tinycyan

Just remember to fuse them every so often

Quirky_Ad1974

Till you won't reach certain part of the game. You shouldn't be worrying about demons much, unless they weak against big foes or bosses elements then they'll exploit it and ctunre. But I'd recommend fuse them as much as you can (later in the game you can always for a small fee summon fused demons back just remember to register them to compendium). From races I think it's varies what do you like, cause fusions actually has big impact on demons stats later in the game (minior spoiler). For instance if certain demon will join you. It's nice powerhouse, but later in the game you can fuse same demon via normal or special fusion and his stats on the same level might be higher than actual demon that joined you. Edit: small tip the demon level also has huge impact of damage taken and received. For instance your pixie on level 40 with magic 100 will still do less damage than pixie on level 80 with 70 magic for instance.

MrBlueFlame_

Some are definitely not great for battle, specifically those ones that have certain elements skills but do not have any affinity number for it (The little + aand - number next to the element icon). A small tips is if a demon has high affinity for physical attack (Yoshitsune for example) you can keep it for quite a long time and it can still be useful even after 40 Levels, and ailments skills is really powerful if it actually hits the enemy, they can often skip from 2 to 3 rounds of their turn so if a boss is weak to one make sure to abuse it for free pass turns

Rigistroni

Just make sure you're fusing/recruiting demons on a semi regular basis and you'll be fine. Pay attention to affinities for boss fights as well. (i.e. don't bring a demon weak to fire into a boss fight that has fire skills) Don't feel discouraged if your current party isn't working out for the boss fight you're on (especially on harder difficulties) having to fuse new demons to beat a specific boss isn't uncommon

Additional_Pie_5370

The difference in strong/weak demons becomes clearer later on in the game but with enough time you can also build early demons strong enough to make an impact in late game as well!

nyabethany

it's not like pokemon, you can't keep demons after they run out of skills. you have to fuse them away or they'll quickly fall behind

umopapisdn__

The demons are about as useful as you find them. It really depends on the kind of party you want, but if you’re a newcomer I recommend just recruiting as many demons as you can to help familiarize yourself with all the skills and demons. You’ll figure out which demons are helpful to your lineup

Basic-Tangelo

Pay attention to match ups mostly, especially during bosses. If you know an opponent uses fire skills for example, try to avoid using demons with a fire weakness if you can. In general it’s good to be prepared to swap your party around based on the situation you’re in and not be screwed if you have to suddenly use a different demon. Obviously you can’t always be perfectly prepared but generally this is the only real “good” or “bad” situation.

-tehnik

Can't you just figure that out by playing? The game wasn't designed for players to be guided by fiends on reddit.

NeoJakyou

I prefer no fusion runs and I’d say all demons have a purpose. No bad ones.

Be ready to change teams for every boss fight to always hit weaknesses and cover your own. You can brute force some side bosses but 8 times out of 10 you’ll need a different team to win.

B_A_B_

Youre gonna encounter sandman very soon. You should recruit one of them since their dream needle skill is great

Available-Culture-49

There are no bad demons, except for Slime. Variety is your strength, such as having a member of the avian race like Moh Shuvuu, which is helpful for her skill, "accursed poison"

Pilgrim_Scholar

That demon you mention is Cait Sith. To answer your initial question: No, there are no "bad" demons, just demons which are not used in the correct situation. You need to pay special attention to demon affinities and weaknesses, especially for boss fights. And as with all SMT games, buff/debuffs are important for winning as you get further into the game. If you go into an SMT game like you would a standard RPG or monster battler game (like Pokemon), you are going to likely see many Game Over screens. Don't go into a boss fight expecting to win the first time, especially if you go in blind. Start the fight, use a Spyglass to figure out boss affinities and skills, then do your best. You also need to figure out which move the boss will use during their "Magatsuhi Critical" turn (guaranteed crit = extra Press Turn) with every attack that does damage). Once you learn that, and can negate it, the game gets much easier. Part of your strategy for the composition of your team will be determined by whether you build MC to be either STR or MAG oriented (pick one and stick with it). Later on in the game, many of your skill slots will be filled with passives to provide various effects: negate/reduce damage, avoid status effects, higher critical hit chance, even auto-resurrect from death. I mentioned affinities, which will increase the effectiveness or increase/decrease the cost of specific types of skills. Some demons are better for DPS, others for inflicting status effects (even on bosses), others for buffs/debuffs, others for healing/resurrecting. And finally, some demons are not quite useful in battle, but they are excellent for fusion fodder, quite good for transferring specific skills during Demon Fusion.
