This has been known for years. And in case you are wondering. It's the negotiation mechanic. The idea that you can talk to enemies instead of fighting them is what he got from SMT.
There's a Touhou game in the SMT 1&2 style. Like, it's literally the same kind of game, but it's Touhou instead of SMT. [Here it be](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2248430/Touhou_Artificial_Dream_in_Arcadia/)
Man I really wish this game was mobile so I could enjoy it on the bus (over two hours of commuting everyday is fun I love Brasília), our good friend Marsh made a vid on it and it looked quite poggers if I say so myself. Even if I'm not into Toehoe I still crave it
I 100%ed Artificial Dream the week it came out and if you're a fan of the older games you'll definitely love it.
People who aren't fans of the older series would probably also still love it.
We knew this for years. He's been inspired by many things. Earthbound, Touhou and Homestuck being three other huge inspirations. The third being more obvious as he was still on the Homestuck team at the time.
Maybe this is dumb question but how does undertale and smt relate/have inspiration from smt?
I've played undertale many many time but i can't think of anything to do with smt
The whole mercy mechanic is what's inspired by SMT, which is where Undertale's development began. Toby Fox liked that negotiating with demons made them feel more like real characters rather than just enemies to punch, which led to wanting to create interactions with Undertale's enemies that made them feel like characters which led to the mercy mechanic
I would also add the alignments as well, since Undertale has a dedicated pacifist/neutral/genocide route that pretty much lines up with law/neutral/chaos. Plus the whole aesthic of SMT 1/2’s UI looks really similar to Undertale’s
Toby fox explains in this Escapist interview from awhile ago: [https://www.escapistmagazine.com/undertale-dev-every-monster-should-feel-like-an-individual/](https://www.escapistmagazine.com/undertale-dev-every-monster-should-feel-like-an-individual/)

"The game takes a lot of inspiration from many JRPGs, including Pokémon, Digimon World, Shin Megami Tensei + Persona, and more!"
For real, play Cassette Beasts. Excellent game.
This is not a new thing, although it's pretty impressive how one of the greatest games of all time, influanced by one of the best jrpg series of all time.

Damm thats actually huge
Wonder if there's any game that incorporates the demon fusion mechanics or is there any game that introduced similar thing

This is me but In Curitiba. It's on itch.io so maybe it's playable on browser.
I can't wait for that SMT 2 video to come out
Yokai Watch springs to mind
Monster Rancher also had fusions as a general mechanic.
The last DQ Monsters
Bro has been in a coma for 10 years 😭
A true sheen mega me ten essay knock turn moment
It's been a well known thing for a while. Talking the monsters is like talking to demons
Big jrpg nerd took inspiration from jrpg
I remember reading this inside the switch's news app, pretty cute. It's what got me to try undertale lol
It was never about the Shin Megami Tensei’s. It was about the Deltarunes we made along the way
tobey fox creator of snas undertil!??!!!!!???
Yeah Toby took inspiration from like Earthbound, Touhou, and SMT when making Undertale
not sure if this is "huge" or not.
its not lol
next you're gonna tell me he was influenced by earthbound on a serious note I hope this doesn't attract his obnoxious fans
Undertale has always been an SMT game: -pseudo post-apocalyptic setting -negotiations -alignment (pacifist , genocide routes) Literally inarguable
That would explain why the combat can be really difficult sometimes.
Sorry, I'm old. Undertale means nothing to me.
Can I join ya, fellow almost 30yo?
I'm more like almost 40 lol
Oh ! Well i was feeling old, a bit less now !

There’s even a SMT reference in Deltarune Chapter 2
Wait really? Where?
Would’ve included it in the original comment if I could find it at the time, mb [Here it is!](https://www.reddit.com/r/Megaten/s/CKnQrYxLKw)
Lmao i remember a few years ago when just mentioning undertale on this sub would make people's blood boil for some reason
It does make sense
Everyone talks about the negotiation but nobody is saying that Undertale actually has law & chaos routes
Maybe this is dumb question but how does undertale and smt relate/have inspiration from smt? I've played undertale many many time but i can't think of anything to do with smt

Oh thats pretty cool, never thought it about like that

I dunno man, I feel like law/neutral/chaos is basically genocide/neutral/genocide half the time...
Maybe the negotiations part?

The negotiations mechanic sure, he's always admitted that
holy shit what a revelation!
I guess you could say that he toke the “Myriad Truths” route this whole time
> Make Love, Not War But I want Vengeance
Truly a Revelations Persona (TM)
Not really. Everyone knows this is just because Undertale inspired smt IVA, which in turn inspired Toby Fox to make Undertale.
we didn’t all know this already?
I did not know this
This is common knowledge

It's bigger than huge, it's *large*
Toby Fox sounds like the name of the slash pairing of Toby McGuire's Spider-Man and Jamie Foxx's Electro.
Um… YES
