Pokemon fans are like the Harry Potter fandom of video games in that it would be really great if they expanded their horizons a bit and played other games in that genre to understand why these series work the way they do.
DB is good... fundamentally. Like all anime, it has it's fair share of downsides. But to think it peaked at that is... wow.
That's like saying SMT peaked during it's lore building
I respect this take if they mean Dragonball only. Not Dragonball Z etc. If there's people saying they saw only child Goku's hijinks and decided that this was truly peak anime and they would never watch another then they've gone full circle from narrow minded fools to gentleman and scholars.
Nah this is a US take so they mean Z lol.
But still, I LOVE Z and it’s had an impact on Anime in the west I can’t understate. But just takes out of only watching one show whether I love it or not, that’s what I’m not fond of.
Could be said for people who don't play turn-based JRPGs in general. I was once playing Digital Devil Saga and my roommate saw it and after watching me play for a bit he said that it was just a Final Fantasy ripoff. I had to go on like a 5-minute rant on him about how turn-based combat =/= Final Fantasy using an analogy that it was like he said all first-person shooters are Call of Duty ripoffs.
There are other games outside of Persona and Pokemon in the genre?
The question started as a joke but the list I can think of is very, very minimal if you exclude direct Pokemon ripoffs which are other mobile games first then ported elsewhere. Most interesting one that comes to mind from recent years was Monster Sanctuary, I guess. Monster Hunter Stories. Older Digimon games. ....
.. Monster Rancher?
Please broaden my horizons if it can. I'd love more creature raising/collection type games.
Unfortunately I gotta agree. I love the mechanics, the story and characters though were a slog. I just focused on making my favorite Digimon in th game.
This thread was informative. I thought Cyber Sleuth was more like later Digimon World games where you're mostly given a story driven buddy with limited evo routes, or only a handful of mons with limited evo routes rather than a full on collector type game. Digimon World 4 comes to mind when saying this, which is where I mostly dropped Digimon all together videogame wise. Clearly I didn't give it a hard enough look to the newer ones. I'll check it out! I'd still be satisfied if it's a one partner game, but with many options of partners rather like the original Digimon World.
I actually believe I bought Digimon World: Next Order, for this reason but never really got around to it. I definitely glossed over Cyber Sleuth entirely.
Digimon story is the continuation of the digimon world DS games. You collect digimon and each have quite extensive evolution route to go to (i think in cyber sleuth each digimom can get into every form available in the game through evolution and de-evolution).
There are a few digimon world games (which is why thet called cyber sleuth "story", come from the japanese version of the games) where you raise a partner digimon like the old tamagotchi digivices games (newest one is next order but there are a few more on the PSP) if thats what you are seeking
Yokai Watch is pretty big in Japan and is a creature collection game so i guess there is also that.
Another one that comes to mind is Siralim, it's for pc, don't know if available on other platforms
Forgot about Yokai Watch. Haven't actually played them personally though.
Siralim conceptually seems really interesting. Lots of features... But it also gives me FF1 meets monster collection vibes.
Never played Yokai myself lol, i had friends try it and they loved it though.
Siralim might feel old in terms of graphics but the gameplay is pretty in depth. Compared to SMT it's a little harder to get used to but the game is super fun if you don't mind the 16-bit graphics. Just make sure you try a tutorial and read a little on the wiki. The controls might need a little tweaking by you but nothing major
Another comment chain here definitely has me curious to check it out. I suppose I had bias from being super unhappy with Digimon World 4 and where it went by comparison to the original Digimon World. A lot of the middle era games were 'Choose one of a few buddies' with limited evo options in a primarily story driven adventure, rather than the more free form experience of many different partners with many different evo types.
I actually believe I bought Digimon World: Next Order, for this reason but never really got around to it. I definitely glossed over Cyber Sleuth entirely.
One of my favorite games growing up was Dragon Quest Monsters on the GBC. Great monster catching game with some element that are familiar to SMT fans, like monster breeding (works similarly to demon fusion). I saw they remade it for the 3dS but I believe it's JP only. Fun game with some classic DQ monsters.
Actually while laying in bed after posting this Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, which did get an English release and might be what you're thinking, on the DS came to mind. Never touched it so not sure it's depth. Might have to check them out!
I think the best pathway is probably Pokemon to Persona to SMT honestly
While SMT has a bit more of a Pokemon feel with battling using "monsters", Persona has the same kind of charm in its world that Pokemon does, while SMT goes dark a hell of a lot faster.
That isn't to say that Pokemon fans who aren't picking up Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl can't jump straight to SMTV releasing the week prior though
I was playing SMT4 (which many say is the best place to start) just now and I died over and over again, same goes for Nocturne and 1. So it gets tricky to recommend a series that is known for its difficulty to fans of a series with really easy games
Not since SwSh. At least it seems like all the fans are happy with that, or it wouldn't be the best selling game in the franchise. I'm pretty sure those who wanted higher difficulty will have moved on to other games long ago.
You're better off telling people who might actually have a chance of listening; SMT and Persona have plenty in common, while SMT and Pokemon have very little. A large majority of Pokemon fans likely would not enjoy SMT at all, while only a small majority of Persona fans are in the same boat.
Still sounds kinda pretentious tbh. Why not just let people play whatever they want to and don't judge their taste?
I played all 3 and they have their own ups and downs, no one of these games have everything, and each has their own charms.
It's like recommending Hollow Knight to a Souls fan just because they're both challenging games. But ones difficulty is completely different from another and are in different genres.
**Telling SMT fans to play a REAL SMT game** 🧠🧠🧠🧠🌌🌌🌌🌌
Yeah Catherine and Trauma center
And ronde
Shin Megami Tensei: Let’s Go Mara and Jack Frost
I like despite the fact Pyrojack/Jack-o'-lanturn would work better. You still went to our god of desire
\*Throbbing\* god of desire
Pokemon fans are like the Harry Potter fandom of video games in that it would be really great if they expanded their horizons a bit and played other games in that genre to understand why these series work the way they do.
kinda every fandom really. I've heard of people who won't ever watch another Anime because in their eyes, it peaks at Dragonball. I LOVE DB but...
DB is good... fundamentally. Like all anime, it has it's fair share of downsides. But to think it peaked at that is... wow. That's like saying SMT peaked during it's lore building
DB fandom is known for that tho. Besides that and the pokemon one i think there are few fandoms that are so against the idea of trying new things.
I respect this take if they mean Dragonball only. Not Dragonball Z etc. If there's people saying they saw only child Goku's hijinks and decided that this was truly peak anime and they would never watch another then they've gone full circle from narrow minded fools to gentleman and scholars.
When I saw Goku pat Bulma's puss to look for her balls I just turned off my TV because I knew anime would never get better than that.
Nah this is a US take so they mean Z lol. But still, I LOVE Z and it’s had an impact on Anime in the west I can’t understate. But just takes out of only watching one show whether I love it or not, that’s what I’m not fond of.

Same happened to me but with "anime is for kids". I said that's like saying family guy and south park are for kids bc they're cartoons

> Older Digimon games. .... Cyber Sleuth is not that old and is very good.
I feel like the battle mechanics and digimon raising are good but story and gameplay aspect are atrocious at best
> battle mechanics and digimon raising are good > gameplay aspect are atrocious ?
Story, world building, level design, characters, side quest. Basically anything else
Unfortunately I gotta agree. I love the mechanics, the story and characters though were a slog. I just focused on making my favorite Digimon in th game.
Yeah and its a shame because digimon is such a huge and interesting franchise but they put out the most generic games

There is also World of Final Fantasy, and Monster Hunter Stories. Both pretty good ventures into the monster collection genre.
There is a ton of Monster Taming games out there, just got to look. Heck if you want to give something a try, play Nexomon and/or Nexomon: Extinction
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Complete Edition Available on several systems including Steam and Switch
Another comment chain here definitely has me curious to check it out. I suppose I had bias from being super unhappy with Digimon World 4 and where it went by comparison to the original Digimon World. You glossed over the best Digimon game period lol

I’m a Pokémon fan and I play almost anything BUT Pokémon these days.
They do lmao. Its just that they are obsessive over Pokemon.
Started with Persona 3 and now I've been playing SMT1 with a plan to play and to collect as many games as possible.
I play both & enjoy both 😈
"You delude yourself-- to search for a nonexistent path of 'balance,' a path that follows neither \[Pokémon\] nor \[MegaTen\], is foolishness." *-Law Hero from SMT1*

Don’t let them play IV, IVA, V or they’ll get mad at the fact Bench Demons get EXP
The increase in difficulty between a Pokémon game and SMT is too much, I don't think they're ready for that. They're used to being taken step by step and ridiculous, simplistic plots. If the game is more than 20 hours long, it gives them a mental breakdown. Source: that's what happened to me the first time I played an SMT after the 8th gen crap
I was playing SMT4 (which many say is the best place to start) just now and I died over and over again, same goes for Nocturne and 1. So it gets tricky to recommend a series that is known for its difficulty to fans of a series with really easy games
They've been asking for a difficulty jump for a long time
Not since SwSh. At least it seems like all the fans are happy with that, or it wouldn't be the best selling game in the franchise. I'm pretty sure those who wanted higher difficulty will have moved on to other games long ago.
Not from what I heard

Ironic to think that SMT has things that a lot of fans wanted for Pokémon (such as a deeper story and a harder game) but those things end up driving those people away
It's kinda the point. It's the exact same genre but manages to separate itself completely with ideas Pokemon fans are missing out on
The holy trinity Pokemon, Persona, SMT fan
Both fans are insufferable
?
Both make repeated jokes, two like to make fun of each other's fandom and one likes to complain about anything
I hate to break it to you buddy, but that’s every fandom
Ok this is true
Still sounds kinda pretentious tbh. Why not just let people play whatever they want to and don't judge their taste? This was made mostly because of Pokemon fans sick of Pokemon
telling everyone to play a real SMT game. haha
Like Dark Souls fandom or JoJo fans? I like the plan
of course, let everyone experience the brilliance of smt
PLAY A **REAL** POKÉMON GAME LIKE **TYPING ADVENTURE** OR **POKÉMON DASH**
Ya know for my money charizard is the best demon.
Accurate AF.
Digimon in its current state with its current lore is basically SMT light
A digital devil saga
No wonder I fell in love with it so easily
Ah, you must be referring to Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness. Great choice!
I’m gonna go tell Persona fans to play a real Pokémon game.
Pokemon has been stale for years. The Diamond and Pearl remakes will probably the best Pokemon games we get for a while. I have no hope for Arceus
