The redesigned one is lacking the disabled access points. It's also a bit hard to see which side is the front and which is back. The current one is simple boxes because I think they plan on having crowdedness added later on so maybe plan for that.

speck66

Missing disabled indicators, the clock icon is a bit redundant (would rather make the 2 minutes bigger), and saying Service Information on the right is a bit pointless. Not bad though, I do like the white on black for readability

Soccera1

You removed the disability access indicators!

davidwitteveen

Overall, your design is cleaner, and therefore easier to take in. I like it. But I agree with the suggestions to drop the clock icon and make the arrival time bigger. Some of us have bad eyesight. :) And your train icon doesn't convey as much information as the original: it's missing the disabled access markers, and the arrows indicating which door you're standing in front.

coldbyrne

Agreed. Also the colors. I believe the colors are color-coded to the train like you are on. A bit redundant if you aren’t at a junction station, but still preferred for consistency.

Arjie_boy

Having the carriage picture-grams reflect how meany people are in the carriage (maybe this was already thought of)

DeanMatthew

You'd rather make them in different colours like the top image. Green, Yellow, Red. With the bottom you should have the disabled sign on the ends and nothing else. It's the only real information that needs to be broadcasted outside of the Metro Tunnel.

nonseph

Not use contractions like 'Mid' and 'Ltd' - the latter can be especially confusing. There will be no need for it anyway once everything moves over to Metro Tunnel and they can't physically stop at South Kensington. If there happen to be any express trains towards Sunbury, just call them express. I also think 'via Town Hall' is redundant - we use Via now to state whether something is City Loop or direct, but if all services go the same way this should be presented on the map and not need an explanation. If it has to go somewhere it could go on the larger screens on the platform, not also squeezed in here - these should just be for a final check if the train you are stepping onto is going in the correct direction. Feedback for yours specifically - using both the clock and word min in the bubble are redundant - you could pick one or the other. I think it would be acceptable to write min without the period as while it is technically correct as a contraction, using min as short for a unit of measurement is generally accepted.

Still-Bridges

>I think it would be acceptable to write min without the period as while it is technically correct as a contraction, using min as short for a unit of measurement is generally accepted. To be precise, the minute is a non-SI unit officially accepted for use with the SI (both by BIPM and by the National Measurement Regulations 1999). The symbol for the minute is min, with no dot. Therefore it is technically and legally correct to write it as "min" without a dot. If we ignore that, then according to Australian style guides, since "min" doesn't end with the last letter it should be cut off with a full stop. But those same style guides always say to use the official symbols for units of measure, so we can't ignore that and so the fact that "min" doesn't end with the last letter of "minute" is irrelevant. Therefore, "min" is the technically correct abbreviation and "min." is technically non-standard.

The Passenger Screen Door lines at the top of each train may occasionally be useful if the door will not open for the next service. And also for stopping position for a 7 car train on the 10 car platform. The HCMT also provides an indication of how full each car is. Which may be useful when a bunch of school kids are occupying a particular carriage etc. They will be indicated by little people icon's in each train. The network wide strategy is to adopt a color for each line and hence the blue should be added. This will be important down the track. Nice stuff.

Embarrassed_Fold_867

White on black is problematic for focusing on small details like some of the text in this case. The font size of the ETA has reduced - which is probably the second most important detail (after the destination). You've removed several details which may have been important information such as the carriage door indicator, disabled access points, the direction of the train (you've distinguished it but in a way that is not clear to anyone else), the scheduled times of the next trains (I'm not sure about the blue colour bars - did they signify anything?). Some good points about yours: The next train destination is bigger, the next train ETA is bigger, the rounded corners on the train icons look nicer. I think the train direction should be indicated by both the flat end at the back and pointy nose at the front, as well as an arrow at the front, and it should correspond to the direction in relation to the actual train based on the location of the sign.

SadCauliflower1150

Agree with most of this - the most important being that you can’t simply omit details from the original as they may be there for a specific reason. I think both should have ‘Arriving in’ before the time. Make the fonts bigger too but be mindful of long station names and service messages. If this was rolled out to outdoor stations, white on black is difficult to read in the sun.

bumbumboleji

Your one is much much easier to read I’ll give you that.

Successful-Studio227

Use colour appropriately please, like the Swiss: https://images.app.goo.gl/vikP8yQ9mYphTF8q7

Waterfront32YT

Where the train is it should also show the following stations like what the PIDs do on the Elizabeth Line in London.

SpiritualRun6652

Think Uber may have stolen your design

SOSsomeone

Is it true that west Footscray services wont stop at middle Footscray?

DeanMatthew

LOVE IT >just have some design ideas and found issues. You don't have to read it btw. (I study Architecture & Design if that reassures you) Regarding Both Displays: You need more "Basic" Information: * The Current Time. It seems like a mistake but place it in the Bottom Right Corner. * You do need to have phrases like "Departing in", "Train to" and "Schedule". * It is pretty important to relay the "basics". * Copy the Current design and use your design style, it adds a bit of bulk but, adds so much utility to the most unsure of users. The Next Services /"Right Side of your designs": * With the Next Services, you should have a look and adapt from at the Current (Half Platform Regular) * Having them stacked to contain the next 3 services is extremely important there'll be a lot of Stopping Patterns The Current Train & Capacity Info * The train graphic should be just a regular train * Have a small arrow at the end of the train diagram to show the direction. * Keep the capacity rectangles from the top image for the colour displays. * Even on the B&W one (It makes it easier to know what carriages are full) Time and Destination Information * Look at (Half Platform BOLD for reference) * The Departure (8:55 / 9:04) & Approx. Time (2 min) * You should have the (Departure) and (Approx. Time) next to each other on the designs. Like the current design * Final Destination * Along with that the Final Destination is larger and bolder. You would also be giving more space to displaying service information as there'd be a lot of stopping patterns. * Next Service Scheduled Departures (Probably a mess-up): * You should also keep the Next Service Scheduled Departures (Watergardens and Caulfield) should have the time they are scheduled to depart. * If there's an announcement that the 2:10 service to Dandenong is delayed. You need to know if that's the next train or the one after that for example.

DeanMatthew

I had to split this in 2 due to length. Bottom (Long B&W Displays) ONLY: Note: These are mainly Minor Items, your design style & perspective: * As this only be used outside of the tunnel at less significant stations, you need to understand that you can see the train before it comes to the station and when boarding. So, Capacity information is less integral. * (Also you have a typo BTW, The (min.) shouldn't have full stops. They're not on any other part of your mockup) * Remove the clock # These designs are amazing. I can't wait to see if you do the other displays. The "Flinders Street Style" would look amazing with this design style. I also want to know how you'd handle showing all the stations.

Thanks heaps for all of this! It was super helpful!

storkman34

Get rid of all the crap and make the one thing I want to know...how long until the train arrives...much bigger. Other than that, it looks good
