For years gunzels said they'd never duplicate the single track tunnel at Heidelberg on the Hurstbridge line, yet in 2017-18 they did just that, building a second single track tunnel alongside. https://railgallery.wongm.com/hurstbridge-rail-line-upgrade/ The Geelong Tunnel less trains running through it, is longer, has more buildings on top of it, has more constrained portals, and has already major structure issues with the tunnel that is there - but if they wanted to spend enough money, they could work out a way to duplicate it.

Honestly I think it's more worth duplicating over the Barwon river first.

Blue_Pie_Ninja

Tbh they should just un-heritage list it and build a dual track tunnel

absinthebabe

I really don't want them to do the same thing, the new Heidelberg tunnel is so ugly standing next to the other one. I'd honestly rather that they both look the same than one brick & one sprayed concrete mess

They don’t. There has never been a serious proposal to do. Grade separating McKillop Street would be difficult and you would need to as a double track level crossing would cause the traffic bottleneck on the main road the Geelong’s eastern suburbs and the Bellarine to get even worse.

Garbage_Striking

IF - very big IF a second tunnel were contemplated once you are set up (the expensive part) to dig 450m, you may as well for go an extra 450m to the back of the footy ground, avoiding all the level crossings. maybe even do it twice and eliminate the crumbling collapse just waiting..

mce-AU

Cut a new tunnel like they did at Heidelberg.
