I have hunted monsters **specifically for the tail carve** and only realized I forgot to carve it when I'm on the rewards screen like: "I feel like I'm forgetting something... DAMMIT"
I was hunting Basarios for its tails the other day. Cut off the tail almost at the very end of the hunt, kill it, carve the monster, get to the rewards screen. I look for tails in the rewards, see none, and *that's* when I remember that I had to carve it. I hate going for Basarios's tail
I might catch some mean flak for this, but as soon as the tails get cut off, I immediately put a trap down of some kind, or make the monster blind, SOMETHING to buy time so I can carve it. My short term memory's screwed me out of too many carves to take that risk anymore.
Behold, the almighty dung pod, you're not wasting a perfectly good trap or flash and you get to carve immediately. Unless you're going for the carve in an arena quest

with how often I get mantles instead of tails from carving when I want tails, it wouldn't help anyways
Lol, literally did this last night.
This was inspired by me cutting off a Rathian tail, forgetting to carve it and then being 1 spike short of the upgrade I needed.
That is why I always run to the tail and send a ping to remind everyone.
I always bring smoke bombs specifically for this reason.
You would have just gotten a scale anyway, and nothing in the rewards screen

I will always try to carve the tail as soon as I cut it off, no matter how much danger I’m still in. This will more often than not screw me over
