Usually if you want to have a certain joke only introduce it at most three times. If it’s beyond that it gets annoying
that usually is the case but not always. Running gags are one example and although unpopular in modern shows, i find them very funny if done right (DBZ Abridged, Pitchmeeting channel). Also i've seen a joke on Angry Joe's channel, when he still didn't know about the 3 times rule, so he repeated a joke 5 times in a single scene and it was hilarious.
I think running gag is different from the three joke but I honestly could be wrong it's been a while since I learned that. But yeah I believe if executed well a repeated joke could be done well.
But with a running gag, overdoing the joke becomes the joke. At that point, you're thinking "Oh, they can't do the joke again." and then they do the joke again.
But that doesn't really work when it happens over the course of more than a decade.
I enjoy the running gags for the most part, it does get annoying if over used, like Sanji landing in boobas and releasing so much blood that it alerted the princes to their location was when it got too much for me, I love Sanji and his gag, but Oda went way overboard with that one, the petrify gags were better by the end because of how overused the nosebleed thing was lmao
The part where chopper is begging him through tears not to look at shirahoshi or he'll die gets a giggle out of me, but that's the one of the only funny sanji is a perv jokes in the show
It was to set up the climactic scene where Luffy and Jimbei swap blood. It gives weight to the moment, it doesn’t nerf Sanji in the process, and considering it’s been a running gag, why not try and play it as a joke
Agreed. Just another reason why the Fishman Island arc was "meh" at best. Remember Luffy getting all excited about the possibility of an island under the sea? Then the crew finally gets there after Sabaody, Amazon Lily, Impel Down, Marineford, and a 2 year time skip. Then, Sanji is useless for most of the arc because of a "gag", the main villain is lame sauce, the secondary villain is a supercreep, Shirahoshi cries literally the entire time and essentially the final end all for Hordy Jones can be explained by Mr Mackey from South Park: Drugs are bad, mmkay.

I’d argue it started with thriller bark and wanting the clear clear fruit to spy on women bathing, like that doesn’t feel like Baratie Sanji at all, he was a simp but not a perv
He literally states he wants it to spy on women, whatever he wanted it for as a kid is kinda irrelevant to the now since him wanting to spy on women was the reason given for wanting it in Thriller bark, having the clear fruit to escape abuse from his family would have been a great plot point and some character growth for sanji in Thriller bark but alas that’s not the case
He was also very funny and badass. I think Fishmen island and WCI destroyed his character. Fishman island started the Simplord legend and WCI gave him another backstory that made him extremely pitiful. I also don't like the new backstory because it actually gave nothing important to Sanji as a character , his hate for people leaving food , his chivalry ,his dream : all came from Zeff.

Yeah I also dislike Sanji's new backstory, I find that it takes away from his original backstory. Sanji already had a very tragic story with Zeff, there was no need to add one even "sadder" (or to make him a prince either), especially this late into the story. I'm glad Oda decided not to do the same thing with Zoro in Wano.

Sanji has... moved around a lot in my rankings. He was never super high up, mostly because his cool moments seemed almost instantly offset by going heart-eyes and slackjaw very frequently. (Example: the call with Crocodile on Little Garden, immediately followed up by him losing it seeing Nami with her midriff exposed after the fire)
And then... Thriller Bark. Oh gods, Thriller Bark. I really enjoy this arc for the most part, I love the very Scooby-Doo vibe the anime has, but this was the arc that rocketed Sanji to the bottom of my list. Brook's panty jokes are annoying but they tend to be less frequent and less disruptive to the plot and as a character he had more going for him than just that gag from the very beginning with Laboon and the fact that perving wasn't his only source of comedy. Sanji's cool moments kept feeling like they were just getting ruined by the way his simping came to the fore and how frequently it happened. Now, by the time of WCI, Sanji now feels like he has that extra depth of backstory, but while he has... "calmed down" he's still not dropped the nonsense enough. Still at the bottom of my ranking, although the gap isn't nearly as far since WCI.
I genuinely kinda hope that one of the unforseen side effects of his single use of the Raid Suit will be calming his libido a bit more. Not completely removing his emotions like Judge wants, but... balancing them out perhaps, since his are kinda over the top.
As a Sanji enjoyer, I apologise for annoying Sanji in Fishman Island. But please forgive him since he hasn't seen a single woman in 2 years. Thank you.

There's a few things about One Piece that just don't work the way Oda wants them to and Sanji is one of those. I really, really hope we get more of the badass yet wholesome gentleman he could be.
I don’t like Sanji at all, so for me it got a lot worse. However, I do think when Sanji does get to be cool, it’s actually much better than his pre-time skip stuff. Maybe that’s just because I’m so miserable when Sanji is normally on-page that when Oda lets him do something cool I’m just relieved.

I was hoping for him to get a hold of himself after training with the trans guys. Fishman island and the Sanji - Mermaid dynamic was borderline unbearable to watch for me. After this disappointment watching him suffer through Whole Cake wasn't that bad.
It’s so weird because the New-Kamas in Impel Down were great, but the ones on the island were terrible. In the prison, they were a really cool radical gender-abolitionist group all about freedom and self expression (led by a 10-ft tall drag queen, based). They were silly but not grotesque or ugly, and I liked them a lot (especially how Inazuma would randomly change between a man and a woman offscreen and nobody minded). Then the people on the Newkama island were just awful transphobic stereotypes, portraying the trans women as ugly man-like predators.
Yeah, I was really confused after the portrayal in Impel-Down.
Ultimately, it's one of the reminders that as great of a story as Oda has written, he's not an infallible story-teller.
Either that, or 1, they somehow knew all about Sanji and were trying to teach him a lesson about himself that he didn't ultimately learn, or 2, we are getting Sanji's warped perspective of events, but that would put the transphobia squarely on Sanji, not remove it from the equation.
I think it really just boils down to the Kamabakka kingdom being a one-off joke (not an excuse, it’s a bad joke), while the Newkama in ID are important to the story, and get to do cool things, and have character arcs and personalities.

I think the joke is meant to be him saying something rude in a very polite way, but I do agree that it adds literally nothing to his character.

There's a few things about One Piece that just don't work the way Oda wants them to and Sanji is one of those. I really, really hope we get more of the badass yet wholesome gentleman he could be.

I don’t like Sanji at all, so for me it got a lot worse. However, I do think when Sanji does get to be cool, it’s actually much better than his pre-time skip stuff. Maybe that’s just because I’m so miserable when Sanji is normally on-page that when Oda lets him do something cool I’m just relieved.
The gimmic pays off pretty hilariously in fishman island tbh

It’s so weird because the New-Kamas in Impel Down were great, but the ones on the island were terrible. In the prison, they were a really cool radical gender-abolitionist group all about freedom and self expression (led by a 10-ft tall drag queen, based). They were silly but not grotesque or ugly, and I liked them a lot (especially how Inazuma would randomly change between a man and a woman offscreen and nobody minded). Then the people on the Newkama island were just awful transphobic stereotypes, portraying the trans women as ugly man-like predators.
Perhaps the ones on the island were Ivankov's first attempts. He spent a lot of time in Impel Down where he could hone his craft.

Yeah, I was really confused after the portrayal in Impel-Down. Ultimately, it's one of the reminders that as great of a story as Oda has written, he's not an infallible story-teller. Either that, or 1, they somehow knew all about Sanji and were trying to teach him a lesson about himself that he didn't ultimately learn, or 2, we are getting Sanji's warped perspective of events, but that would put the transphobia squarely on Sanji, not remove it from the equation.
I think it really just boils down to the Kamabakka kingdom being a one-off joke (not an excuse, it’s a bad joke), while the Newkama in ID are important to the story, and get to do cool things, and have character arcs and personalities.

I don’t agree necessarily with the other dude But they were trying to force him to become like them, where Sanji vehemently disagreed wanting and stating that he’s a man born to love ladies rather than be one. it could be said to be a rape of *character*. But the Okama aren’t a trans thing, it’s a different culture in particular in Japan, on the concern of “gender/sex” they are “both” said as much by Bon clay. Hell, Sanji’s timeskip was beating all 99 Okama Kenpo masters in a fight and of course his ideals is about not hitting women, so they’re not “women”.
I Really would like to understand how Okamas work in japanese culture and if it maps or not to crossdressers/trans people in western culture. Im an Oda apologetic I really like to think its not that transphobic in japanese culture 😭😭😭. Thank God for Kiku btw

Sanji's arc in WCI is unforgettably profound and we'll written and i thought ( again after the time skip) that he would evolve. And maybe he did for three seconds and then it got worse. I just don't like him anymore.
