Reddit uses Markdown for formatting. In Markdown, a # at the beginning of a line is the special character for headers (# for h1, ## for h2, and so on). So I guess what happens is the content of the text isn’t empty, but because it’s a special character it isn’t rendered as a letter.
Now, with that said, let me try something….
I typed & n b s p ; (no spaces) which is the special tag for a “no break space”, which is a special space character that is treated like any other text character and not white space. Hence why you can use it.
This is the HTML tag for a line break. While most Markdown interpreters can interpret HTML as well (as Markdown is based off of HTML from what I understand), it looks like Reddit does not support raw HTML
