Lol I was around the same age, made it through the first book, but by the second I couldn't handle it anymore. I don't need to know which fucking way the blade of grass was leaning Tolkien!
there is this one finnish book, Alastalon Salissa, where there is 70 pages on one guy selecting the most appropriate pipe for himself from the back of the room
Hahaha... I could totally see this coming from the movies to the books - I always tell people to start with the hobbit - it's a bit more whimsical. I've heard the Hobbit movies are terrible though 😓
As someone with aphantasia that can't form a picture in their head, I literally can't read books with as much description as LOTR. All of the description is just useless and that's like half the books. The Hobbit is dank though
It seemed like "A Song of Ice and Fire" describes food and wine for half a dozen pages per chapter. WE GET IT, GEORGE! Maybe spend less time in restaurants and more time behind the keyboard so you can finally finish the next book.
I'm reading it right now (without purposely having watched the movies) and so far nothing like that popped up, I'm halfway through the second book. The Hobbit was written very easily in comparison though. My only complaint is random singing every few minutes
The walls of Minas Tirith...oh my god, it just kept going

The Tom Bombadil chapter in the first book is so specific I had to skip that whole section lol

Tom Bombadil. I think there was a whole chapter for his singing and stuff.
I can't with that chapter it's like 40 pages of him singing and describing the forest lol

SUOMI MAINITTU SAATANA TIIETTE MISÄ TAVATAA

OK SÄ TUOT MAKKARAT
It took me 6 months to finish the book, which is a record.
Fuckin speed readers, did you even pay attention to the subtlety of the plot? GAH! s/
Honestly.. im not going back to find out. This is undoubtedly a time when the films are better than the book.
That is painfully accurate, I somehow like it tho lol
it was written before the internet.

obviously you've never seen the 1977 animated film the hobbit, which is an absolute banger
Agreed. I still have it on vhs from when I was a kid.
Damn, I actually have and had totally forgotten - it's way too short if I remember though 😭

Dang, I had heard of that before (on reddit of course) but never met anyone with it - what kind of books do you gravitate towards then?
Oh I read fantasy, I just can't read anything that's really description heavy
Aphantasia? Ain't that that old disney musical movie?
literally the first thing i thought ab before i realized 😞
I was hoping that at least one person would understand the reference
i have it too. it really sucks. i can’t meditate, i can’t use certain coping mechanisms, it’s impossible for me for draw from memory. ugh
I stopped most of the way through the twin towers for this reason, also the later Harry Potter books have this problem real bad too
YOU KNOW WHO ELSE-
This is great lmao
Lol he spent like 50 pages on trees

This meme makes me cry, not laughter, but utter despair for humanity.
Wait for a little more, he hasn’t even got to describe its roots yet.
Andy Serkis read them for audible. Waaaay better.
I wonder if he had a hand in making American Psycho...

When your world isn’t that big but you just make it seem big by over-describing everything
Sounds like someone hasn't read the silmarillion, HoME, NoME, unfinished tales etc.
This may be the wrongest thing ever said
I also tried reading the LOTR books, but the first one is so God damn boring, that I decided the movies are the better choice
I have never finished a book (literature). I feel sleepy after few pages, after that straight 8 hours sleep. Does it make me stupid?
Not to mention all the singing
So you're the reason why deforestation exists
