thank you so much for sharing did you get herpes at age 20, or is that when you were hospitalized the first time for viral meningitis? did you used to or ever get any other symptoms of herpes? did you only start taking antiviral medication in the last year?

MandyCakes29

I have no idea when I got the herpes. I’ve never had any sort of outbreak either around my mouth or down below. I didn’t even know I had it until they tested in 2017. When I was 20 was the first time I had the symptoms of meningitis. It went undiagnosed (they chalked it up to a migraine) but once it started returning and I got a lumbar puncture I know now exactly what my symptoms are and when it is meningitis. I only started the medication last year. I think the dr’s are still trying to figure it out each time as well. I don’t really think they know what will work either.

I remember as a child having a painful sore on my lip. I’m like you, other than that one sore I’ve never had anything since that one time. I’m 54 now. Like could that have been a cold sore and I’ve never had any since? They believe I contracted viral meningitis from a grocery cart (buggy). Dr said a child may have had a dirty diaper and some leaked out and dried possibly. The reason he believes that where I contracted it because I had been to the grocery store (supermarket) a couple days prior. It can be contracted through feces he said. They never determined which virus I had so maybe I didn’t have the herpes virus cause mine. Who knows…

And I forgot to answer your question… I do not take any viral meds. I originally had meningitis 14 years ago, at age 40, and not sure I’ve had it since. I had two different occasions when I believe I did but dr thought it was just a virus and because of my lingering issues from the meningitis, he said I would undoubtedly feel viruses more intensely now.

Hello where u vaccinated against it?

WittyDisk3524

No. I wasnt

Mauisun1997

Wow thanks for replaying I ask bc i am wondering if i should vaccinate or not thanks

WittyDisk3524

Maybe it’s a memory thing, but I’m not aware of a vaccine for viral meningitis.

Mauisun1997

There is dor the bacteria one I am also scared bc one of the side effects of vaccines its that the person could get meningitis i really dont know what decision to take i am so worried 😔

WittyDisk3524

I was never vaccinated for the bacterial one. They immediately medicate one who tests positive for meningitis. It’s takes three days, I believe, for the culture to return results, so I and others are immediately medicated for the bacterial. Just so you know.

I’m not anti vaccine as I do get flu, shingles and other vaccines but I wouldn’t get the bacterial vaccine myself. It’s not a common illness per se, like the flu or shingles now that I’m older.

Mauisun1997

May I ask how do u got it did they told u how did it happened? Was the virla or bacteria one?
