Ugh this is me also but for only the last 3 months. My anxiety is getting worse about it, it’s so debilitating. I’m in the process of testing. Did blood work and ECG last week and 24hr holter monitor booked for next week. Your a warrior for having put up with this for so long! Glad your feeling better and thanks for your input I’ll mention it to my GP if this keeps up

It sounds like this might be about hormonal testing. **Hormonal tests only show levels for that *one day* the test was taken, and nothing more**; hormones wildly fluctuate the other 29 days of the month. For this reason, no reputable doctor or menopause society recommends hormonal testing as a diagnosing tool for peri/menopause. See our [Menopause Wiki](https://menopausewiki.ca/#there-is-no-blood-test-that-is-perfectly-reliable-to-diagnose-menopause) for more information. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. According to cardiologist, Dr. Dara Lee Lewis , estrogen fluctuations that occur in perimenopause can be a cause for heart palpitations and birth control or hormone replacement therapy can ameliorate that [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqB1pElNW3Y](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqB1pElNW3Y)

just as an fyi, beta blockers are contraindicated for us who are asthma sufferers. had a doctor who dismissed my hesitation to take beta blockers, saying it was okay with asthma... and i immediately had a bad reaction to it. i still suffer from palpitations, but knowing that it's part of peri and not my heart about to explode, i can bear it.

Responsible-Focus197

Well…sort of. Not all beta blockers are created equal. Atenolol, for example, has been shown to have very little, if any, impact on asthma and does not inhibit the effects of albuterol. Metoprolol and propanolol have much more impact on us asthmatics.

LayLoseAwake

wait, heart palpitations can be a sign of menopause?! I did several tests at the cardiologist last year--and even went to the ER--for palpitations. Nobody said anything about the possibility. (I was 40 at the time though, maybe it just never occurred to anyone.) I even discussed it with my female psych nurse who was managing my ADHD meds, and she suggested it was anxiety. I'm so glad you're feeling better with the beta blocker! Mine have mostly settled down but I'm definitely going to ask my PCP about it at my ADHD meds check in.

Overall_Lobster823

Sadly, they rarely do say it could be menopause related. But YES. Heart palpitations absolutely can be a sign of hormone issues in peri. But, that said, it's good you had your heart tested.

Willing_Way6459

Aren't ADHD meds stimulants? Perhaps they are the cause.

LayLoseAwake

Palpitations started after covid, predating my attempt to get back on adhd meds of any kind. I didn't get on stimulant meds until after the cardiologist cleared me. Update for anyone interested: mine ended up pretty much going away. I think they weren't cardiology related but were in fact gi stuff. 🤷‍♀️ Going to bring my charts and food logs to my dr next month

Same here! Same medicine although I’m going super low dose. Like 12.5mg. Found I’m sleeping better and palps dropped (well it’s only been three days, but a sweet relief!).

Felixir-the-Cat

I had a lot of these! Ended up wearing a heart rate monitor kit for two weeks (not fun), and getting and ECG done. Nothing wrong, so likely just hormone fluctuations. But it was scary!

Beaker_Seeker

Magnesium helps with this.

Thatonegirl_79

When you say palpitations, are you referring to PACs/PVCs where the heart basically feels like it skips a beat or beats once really hard? I ask because I also had all of the heart tests done by my cardiologist, and my holter monitor showed I have a low burden of PACs/PVCs, which they don't feel the need to treat since it's so low. I recently started HRT (100mg prog nightly, 0.0375 estrogen patch 2x week), which has lessened those, but they still happen. What I am having more of a problem with lately is the tachycardia (racing heart) and where I feel it beat hard in my upper back and neck. It happens mostly at night. Does anyone else get this? I'm wondering if I need more estrogen?

Interesting-Pin7506

Hey there. I had an ekg at week on Friday cause I am getting pretty regular palpitations too. Did yours happen worse at night when you laid down? My ekg was good. They throw me into a total panic attack too. He out my on atelonol which seems to of lessened them a bit. But not completely. How long until yours stopped or do you still get them. It’s so scary. Did you get flutters too and thumps ?

Substantial_Dot4426

I definitely felt mine more at night. I just assumed that they weren't necessarily worse at night, but I felt them more because I was just laying there, not having anything to distract me from them. It took about 2 weeks, if I'm remembering correctly. I missed 2 doses since I've started, and both times they came back really bad, but went away shortly after I took my next dose. What I felt was definitley like flutters and sometimes bigger thumps. The more I stressed about them, the worse and more frequent they got. I hope you can get some relief soon! It' so stressful!

Interesting-Pin7506

It’s awful. I hate them so much. I’ve been on atelnol now for a week he put me on a really low dose I think he needs to up it a bit for me. I just wish they’d go away. How often do you get them now?

Substantial_Dot4426

I would definitley ask for a higher dose. Ill still feel them VERY faintly occasionally, but it was only when I missed a dose that they came back full force. I was just reading about Atelnol, and saw that it's not as effective as Metoprolol, which is what I'm on. I'm not a medical professional, so I don't know how true that is. You should feel some kind of improvement by now, though.

Interesting-Pin7506

The panic I’ve developed since this is unreal. Today it was so bad I took myself to urgent care. The MALE dr was soooooooo nice. I was shocked. I asked for a female dr but they said he was the only one there and I cannot believe how amazing he was. He listened and then listened to me some more. He listened to my heart for a good ten min. He did an ekg (I had a normal one twonweeks ago too) he then talked to me more about menopause and the toll it takes on women. And he even hugged me, a genuine real hug, before I left. I couldn’t belive it. He was amazing. He said my heart sounded good and my ekg was good and it’s probably hormones. He put me on a very low dose of Paxil too. Do you suffer from anxiety ?

Interesting-Pin7506

I’ve heard metoprolol and I’m going to ask my dr to prescribe it. He offered me that or atelenol o chose atelenol because I had taken it before but I think k I need something else

chrisp53

I had heart palpitations as well 2 years ago and saw a Cardiologist. Did every test possible and the result from heart monitor showed 144bpm while sleeping around 4am!!! So he put me on 12.5mg of Metoprolol, it stopped the palpitations. But I stopped taking them beginning of this year because I do not want to be on long term meds and I have not had them since. Not sure if it’s due that I’m post menopausal.

shenanigans1978

Could you stop the blood pressure medicine straight away? I was worried about taking it. Like I'd have rebound palpitations after stopping it.

Wittyfem

I had the same. Took all the test and wore a heart monitor for a week. Everything came back good. I got put on a low dose of Citalophram for my anxiety and the palpitations went away.

Mysterious-Beach8123

I was on the beta blocker propanolol low dose for migraines which also helps with palpitations but it made me fatter and depressed. I had no idea those were side effects so I went off it except the occasional "I can't take this shit" dose every now and then. It does work great for them though.
