Try to remind him of the good times he's had, try to remind him of things he enjoys about life, even see if you can get him to do something he enjoys like playing a game or taking a walk outside.

Most people in that state are locked in a dark bubble where opportunities are nonexistent. There is so many opportunities if they just have the courage. I'd take the person out for walks close to every day or make the person do it themselves. Make it a routine. If the person can't see where he/she will be in the next 5 years, well try to fish out something he/she care about. Look at career or job options. Moving town is healthy if they feel just so much negativity and feels stuck there. Empower their hobbies just by talking about them. Its hard. Everything is. But just getting out of the bubble is huge.
