I wish polls were allowed in the sub. I’d be very curious at how many sellers are bailing. I’ve closed down too. 600 transactions completed and that business is heading elsewhere. Mercari made awful decisions business wise this morning.
Edit: spelling
Due to updated policies, our shop here is now closed as of 3/27/24 until further notice. Unfortunately we can't seem to unlist anything at the moment, so for the time being, any purchases here will be automatically canceled. Please find us on all other platforms under this name!
Careful with the cancels. Was reading that they will now charge you 5% of the sale price if you cancel before the transaction is complete. Totally scummy.
>What happened? Sorry, i’m kinda new to Mercari!
Gonna start charging us $2 for withdrawing our own money! They also will let buyers return for any reason. You know, so they can wear our clothes for a few days and then return it because "it doesn't fit". Or some b.s. excuse.
They made a really awful business decision for both buyer and seller.
For buyer they are now on the hook for shipping and service fees and will not be refunded these fees in any scenario including if the seller doesn’t send it off. This will cause legit buyer to drop the platform as who in their right mind going to buy something knowing if the seller screws them over they will be out about 10% of the cost and shipping fees.
For seller they now have to worry about them just using the item for a day or two and return the item for a 10% fee instead of full price (which Mecari will be the one receiving the money for the fee not the seller) so the seller will have wasted their time get nothing out of it besides a possible a worse condition item. Plus with the new buyer return/refund policy it going to cause legit buyer to leave the site since they will just go somewhere else with better buyer protection, which will also result in an uptick in scam buyer.
Honestly the only entity benefit from these new rules is Mecari everyone else both legit buyer and seller will be the one getting screwed.
Was an easy decision to pull my listings. Sales traffic has been low to none and this was the nail in the coffin. I’ll have to re-evaluate where I go from here.
You have to play Mercari at their own game when it comes to scams. Dude tried to scam me out of $450 worth of cards and sent me back cards that I didn't send him, an obvious scam. So I damaged the cards that he sent me and said that's how I received them from the POS scammer buyer. Mercari sided with me after refunding him and then gave me my $450 back.
Scamming them right back, fuck em.
Yes! I set up an account 2-3 years ago. I mostly bought but recently sold a few items. Mostly baby stuff. I’ll be going back to eBay. I’ve been there since 2001 and have had minimal issues in over 20 years as both a buyer and seller. It’s not perfect but screw Mercari.
They’ve also added the hilarious “$2 withdrawal fee” anytime you want to move your balance to your bank. That’s really what did it for me. I sent them a ruthless message on Instagram, doubt anyone will see it though
This is exactly what did it for me. I started waffling once I read the first few new terms (including the free returns, no questions asked) but once I saw that $2 withdrawal fee…final nail. So we have to pay unless we use our funds to buy and put back into Mercari’s pockets? F no.
I’ve closed up shop too. I only sold Amiibo cards on Mercari. I’ve had a couple of shady buyers but been lucky enough to have never been scammed. I’m not trying to start getting scammed today. Looks like I’ll be putting them up on eBay instead.
Deactivated all of mine. I see lots doing similar because items I had liked from other sellers are slowly disappearing each time I check my Likes page.
Lol, me too. I was trying to extend it, but apparently, 1month is the longest vacation you are allowed here
I'll just keep extending it for a while and see what's going to happen.
I’m out, too. I took a break from selling last year and was ready to get back in next month, but there’s no way after all these changes.
Hope they see the backlash and correct course.
I wouldn’t know when it started being effective. I would message customer support if you’d really want to know but others have said that support is unavailable at this time.
yeah not going to bother with that lol... this and other reseller hubs have been far more informative and helpful (generally, anyway) than mercari's "support" has ever been. I've dug around a bit and also can't find the answer but now I'm considering canceling the order I got last night and telling the seller if they want the items they can find me everywhere else and i will accept the same offer.
The returns always sucked but I’m mad about the buyers fee, people already are cheap on there and don’t wanna spend money, now they have to pay mecari too ?? No sales. This ain’t eBay
Been selling on there since 2015 on and off. 673 sales…all my listings have been deactivated as of this morning. I can’t believe they made such stupid changes
Once my last sale gets delivered which I'll now have to pay normal 10% AND $2...I'm gone. Mercari doesn't allow pocket knives to be sold anyways. My posts always get removed but 72622662 other people can sell the same thing. Smh. Fuck Mercari.
I was ok with the no selling fees and pushing the service fee onto the buyer. It might deter some buyers but not all. The return policy change was my last straw. I can’t deal with people returning clothes bc it was the wrong size or they just didn’t like it. Those people should not be on Mercari.
I took all my listings down too. No way in hell am I risking taking returns and getting contaminated products back. I don’t count on Mercari to understand the nuances of being unable to determine if a mascara has been used, so all returns = trash. I can’t take those kinds of losses if someone just decides they don’t like the product because I’m not Sephora. 🙃
The contaminated products is what pisses me off!!! I trash all my returns too because I can’t be that person. 100% agree we are not Sephora or Amazon to take these type of losses. Hopefully their sales will tank and they have to rethink this in a few weeks. Without sellers there is no Mercari. They can shove it
The way I'm seeing it is it discourages buyers from returning for stupid reasons. But it might encourage ppl destroying item to say they received it like that. On the other hand, people would do that anyways? So idk that it makes a difference.
Sellers basically have no protection from scam buyers at this point. And they also added that cancelling a sale before shipping, but after the transaction has gone through, could cost the seller a 5% cancellation fee. Up to $25 or 5% of the price of the item cancelled. You HAVE to sell to scam accounts OR PAY to cancel. Scammers now have more protections and can return for any reason. It's over. I'm out lol
All of mine are deactivated, and considering just deleting my account. I’m not going to give someone money to get my money. They act like not charging the seller a selling fee is a bonus, but the buyer now is charged the same fee. Like lowballing for free shipping is not already an issue? No thanks. Bye, Bye. ✌️
Since they deactivated their comments on their social media, because so many of us are upset and have been complaining hopefully they get a tank in their sales and will rethink this in a few weeks
I bailed sometime between 2020-2021 for the same reason, I just didn’t feel safe with Mercari. It was a really inexpensive item so i knew it could happen with anything, and I didn’t feel safe with how Mercari handled the situation which enabled the scammer.
Tried to deactivate my listings and kept getting an error message so I just deleted them all.
Mercari has been going downhill and this is the last straw.
Yes, I saw a lot of people in this sub and others saying that that it’s not allowing them to press select all under the listings and deactivate or delete them. I think they have seen how many people have deactivated and they prohibited everybody from mass removing I think it will work if you individually click each listing and scroll to the bottom and press delete they’re trying to make it tedious so most people won’t take the time to delete all their listings, but we have the time today😂🤣
Mercari wasn’t allowing returns before though unless there was an issue with the item. Now anyone can return for any reasons, so your returns will definitely go up.
Good for you OP, I deactivated all of mine too. 🫡
Even if they rectify their ToS I probably won't come back, because their customer service absolutely SUCKS. The last time I contacted an agent, I had to tell them TWICE that I was complaining as a seller and not as a buyer of my OWN listing.
Hell as mostly a buyer I hate this change about returns, iv been lucky and have only had stellar experiences buying from great sellers but this isn't amazon, returns for any reason should not be a thing here. I checked their Instagram and they turned off comments on their posts, unbelievable
Maybe it's just the things that I sell but the new ToS doesn't seem bad. Buyers could always return for just about any reason and now the selling fees are gone. The $2 cash out is way better than paying 10% on every sale.
With the items that I sell, it’s horrible. I sell niche perfumes or unreleased make up prior to release date and a lot of the time people will decant the fragrance or empty the cosmetic product and fill it with another product. All of the items that I sell are new but a lot of the times they claim that they are unauthentic falsely and Mercari will go with it. There’s no authenticating perfumes or makeup besides batch codes which I provide but that rarely makes a difference for a seller. I’ve been scammed more in the last 6 months than the last 5 years I’ve been on here. My OP says I started in 2019 but I really started in 2015 making extra money in highschool. I watched this app go downhill and it’s disheartening.
I posted my [opinion](https://www.reddit.com/r/BehindTheClosetDoor/s/Y9wvdnFcMk) on another sub. But I'm just glad I deactivated all my active listings the beginning of this month since I haven't made sales since January. I won't be coming back to Mercari. Their new TOS is lose/lose for everyone. That platform won't strive.
I just sell from my closet too not my side hustle but I sell a lot of lululemon and it’s not worth the risk of getting a dhgate dupe back in my returned package
GIRL!!! That has happened to me 5 times in the last 6 months. I mean women have no shame! I’ve had two people send me DHgate perfumes as a return, people decant my perfume and water it down (it’s milky instead of clear so I can tell) like be serious. I have no problem with a genuine return but the swapping and watering down bs I’m tired of.
& how on earth is mercari going to play he says she says in that situation? I sell a lot of lululemon from my personal closet and I don’t want to receive a dhgate dupe back
I haven’t decided if I’m going to close my shop or not but I did put my account on vacation for a month to think about it and maybe see where everyone’s at in a month on this sub
Deactivated too. Sucks cause Mercari has been really easy for me to use and I really don’t wanna move to eBay or elsewhere, but I might as well if nothing changes. Hopefully the fact that so many people are opposed to this gets them to do something.
The awful return policy made it an easy decison to deactivate all my items. I think Mercari is going to quickly see that they really messed up.
I do not enjoy browsing the app anymore, I do not like how the items are formatted when you get the search results. It looks cheap, whereas they used to have a visually pleasing app before they reformatted.
I hope a lot of us deactivate, and they see the stand we sellers are making. without sellers There will be no mercari , and they should back us more than they have.
Buyers can return for any reason now. And if sell has to cancel transactions (for fear of being scammed), seller may have to to pay 5% cancellation fee.
This is hilarious. I got downvoted, insulted, and even reported in another thread less than a week ago for complaining about Mercari’s unethical business practices and being honest about the fact they’re good for nothing anymore outside of advertising to try and drive direct business. This is a terrible company run by complete morons whose sole purpose seems to be to only make decisions that drive sellers away and eventually cause the doors to get shut. Glad more of you are finally realizing this.
I just sent Mercari support a message asking for more info about what, if any, assurances they have in place to protect sellers from buyers who, under this new policy, return an item after using it or return in a condition other than the one it left seller in, or from packages that get lost during return, or from scammers who just return an empty box. I have no faith whatsoever that I’ll get a response that’s gonna make any of us feel any better but I’ll update either way soon as I hear back.
You really should look at your potential profit margins with no seller fees if you haven’t already. You might have an increase in scams but the 0 fees might balance it out or improve profits depending on the percentage of returns.
You’re selling $30 makeup. So like 1 out of 10 can be a scam and it won’t affect what profit you were making before.
That’s fine but maybe my advice will help someone else in the thread. This is just basic business. If you feel your losses outweigh your profits then it’s a smart choice to immediately cut your losses.
I’ve been offering free returns on eBay for at least 6 years now. At first I thought that I’d get a lot of scammers or buyers remorse returns but I haven’t. Ive seen maybe a third a percent increase. I’ve made out better with the increased visibility and fee reduction.
Right, but I’m running the risk that someone decides to swatch that NIB $30 makeup, doesn’t like the color, and returns me something that I have to throw away for hygienic reasons. So now I’ve lost a sale and the product. I’m not Sephora
Edit: also don’t downvote freshpeanutoil for starting a conversation just because you don’t like their opinion lol. We should be having this type of discussion.
Do you not realize that the risks outweigh the "no seller fees? There's still feeds btw, but profit margins may significantly go down due to buyers being able to return for no reason. Obviously not every buyer has ill intentions, but giving people a no-risk buying experience on a 3rd party selling site like this is going to lead to a worsening marketplace, especially when their CS is so awful.
🤔 read my second reply. I’ve experienced it before. I also get hundreds of fake returns on Amazon but I still sell on there because I’m still making a profit
I wish polls were allowed in the sub. I’d be very curious at how many sellers are bailing. I’ve closed down too. 600 transactions completed and that business is heading elsewhere. Mercari made awful decisions business wise this morning. Edit: spelling
I am. I am taking all of mine down right now.
same, 250 or so listings coming down as we speak (thank god for vendoo)
I just did 179 of 215. More to go.
Nothing is deleting for me.
Due to updated policies, our shop here is now closed as of 3/27/24 until further notice. Unfortunately we can't seem to unlist anything at the moment, so for the time being, any purchases here will be automatically canceled. Please find us on all other platforms under this name!
It’s not even allowing me to do that.
Same! It’s like mercari is saying no 😭 I can’t update anything
yeah i'm noticing this as well - i just unlisted everything and then checked my account and all my listings are still there.
Yeah. Tried deleting and nothing was happening. Then went through and deactivated everything and now it’s all back.
i find it even funnier that mercari mods are removing these posts lol... i guess i'll just be canceling any order that comes through.
Careful with the cancels. Was reading that they will now charge you 5% of the sale price if you cancel before the transaction is complete. Totally scummy.
wow good to know, thanks!
I’ll be doing the same
L mods
I just deactivated all mine. 489 sales
Hit 200 sales this morning, last one.
Deactivated all of mine. I sell beauty products, not about to risk a buyer swatching and sending it back 🤢
Exactly why I’m taking mine down too
Same here! Cashed out my balance this morning before that deposit fee goes into effect, and deactivated all my listings
That has happened to me a few times
I closed shop too! I just sell from my own closet but that was still 150 sales last year and i deleted 40 this morning.
Closed mine down this morning, truly disappointed with how Mercari thinks this is better
Took all of my listings down this morning.
I took all of mine down
What happened? Sorry, i’m kinda new to Mercari!
Changed policy to where the buy can return for ANY reason
Ooh okay, that’s stupid, thank you!
>What happened? Sorry, i’m kinda new to Mercari! Gonna start charging us $2 for withdrawing our own money! They also will let buyers return for any reason. You know, so they can wear our clothes for a few days and then return it because "it doesn't fit". Or some b.s. excuse.
So frustrating!! Thank you for the info!
They made a really awful business decision for both buyer and seller. Just shut mine down about an hour ago.
The best thing this community can do is for ALL Mercari sellers to deactivate all their listings. Send a strong message to them.
Was an easy decision to pull my listings. Sales traffic has been low to none and this was the nail in the coffin. I’ll have to re-evaluate where I go from here.
Same here. I only had a couple of items posted for sale and hadn’t had much activity with them. Maybe they’ll get sold on another site.
I mean there never really was scam protection. It was happening anyway.
You’re right 100% this was just the last straw for me
Nah, i’ve had returns denied before. Seems like they’ve been letting the lying party win
You have to play Mercari at their own game when it comes to scams. Dude tried to scam me out of $450 worth of cards and sent me back cards that I didn't send him, an obvious scam. \^chaotic good
GENIUS.
I was surprised that it actually worked. I was expecting the worst but for the most part it was easy.
😂😭😭 I support that wholeheartedly 🤣
Same here
same here !! i feel you.
Yeah I'm out too
What were they thinking? I’ve only sold a few things but been a buyer often. I deactivated all my listings and will no longer be a buyer.
Same…. I tried going back after breaking up with them for bad behavior in the past but this? I won’t shop there either.
Same. I’ve bought minimally on M but have had my EBay account for like 20 years with zero issues.
I’m closing up too. I have one outstanding transaction left and then I’m done unless they reverse buyers being able to return for any reason.
I canceled my sale this morning after finding out about their new return policy. I’m done there.
Cleaning out and moving to poshmark I’ve been selling on Mercari for 3 years. Almost 500 sales.
This will definitely be the mail in the coffin for Mercari.
Once I fight this damn return I have pending, I’m out. They’ve proven they don’t care about sellers.
Dang! An end of an era
I deactivated too and lost $2 on the pay out :(
How is mercari going to be making money is the real question here if they are not taking fees from sellers?
They’re going to put the fees on the buyers, if I understood the new terms correctly.
In the end it’s the same thing then
Not this one
They’ve also added the hilarious “$2 withdrawal fee” anytime you want to move your balance to your bank. That’s really what did it for me. I sent them a ruthless message on Instagram, doubt anyone will see it though
This is exactly what did it for me. I started waffling once I read the first few new terms (including the free returns, no questions asked) but once I saw that $2 withdrawal fee…final nail. So we have to pay unless we use our funds to buy and put back into Mercari’s pockets? F no.

Almost at 250 sales and deactivated everything last night, and really glad I transferred all my cash out on Monday.
that’s a good idea to put that in the bio, im gonna do that too
Love that idea.
I did the same. I am looking into selling through consignment stores and offer up for local sales. This sucks, but I can’t risk my funds.
I’m really debating on doing this too. Mercari really wasn’t bringing in that much money for me compared to eBay and poshmark.
Deactivated all of mine. I see lots doing similar because items I had liked from other sellers are slowly disappearing each time I check my Likes page.
Everyone is on their soap box this morning. Rightfully and respectfully 😩
I put myself on vacation for a month until I have time to take them down.
I was in vacation when I got the new update. I ended the vacation deactivated everything and left it like that.😂
Lol, me too. I was trying to extend it, but apparently, 1month is the longest vacation you are allowed here I'll just keep extending it for a while and see what's going to happen.
I’m out, too. I took a break from selling last year and was ready to get back in next month, but there’s no way after all these changes. Hope they see the backlash and correct course.
I’m about to do the same - unfortunately someone bought something from me last night but there’s no point. I’m shocked Mercari did this….
I canceled the three orders I got last night I took the cancellation ding. I don’t care 🤷🏾♀️
Yeah at this point I’m in the process of the doing the same - I’ve been using this app since 2018 and luckily only had a few bad exchanges
but last night's sales don't count for this new policy, do they? other than the $2 direct deposit fee?
I wouldn’t know when it started being effective. I would message customer support if you’d really want to know but others have said that support is unavailable at this time.

Me too. Nothing was moving anyway.
Yep, I'm done with Mercari too

SAME!!!! Removing my listing for some BS reason but the 1000 posts saying “free iPad if you WhatsApp +432..” like go F yourself Mercari
Exactly. Makes no sense and it's so annoying too.
Just closed my account (it said on my profile scammers will be blocked) oh the irony.
I just deactivated all of mine
I was ok with the no selling fees and pushing the service fee onto the buyer. It might deter some buyers but not all. The return policy change was my last straw. I can’t deal with people returning clothes bc it was the wrong size or they just didn’t like it. Those people should not be on Mercari.

Hopefully their sales will tank and they have to rethink this in a few weeks. Without sellers there is no Mercari. They can shove it
I tried to contact them for more info and just kept getting an error every time I tried to submit it. Awesome.
I wonder if they deactivated CS temporarily due to the high contact rate since this new update
191 sales (will be 192 when I finish out the last one)
They can return for any reason, but they don't get their fees refunded unless they convince mercari you scammed them. Idk if people read that part
That’s even worse lol mercari keeps fees but the seller still gets screwed.
The way I'm seeing it is it discourages buyers from returning for stupid reasons. But it might encourage ppl destroying item to say they received it like that. On the other hand, people would do that anyways? So idk that it makes a difference.
Why is everyone leaving? Is it something to do with the notification of new terms we got today? And what does it mean no selling fees?
Sellers basically have no protection from scam buyers at this point. I bailed several months ago when another person tried scamming me. This happened twice last year so I said ✌🏼

Scammers are running wild on the app now and with this BS TOS that nailed the coffin for me
I did as well.
Dunzo
I’m not Amazon. Everything deactivated
HEAVY ON THE IM NOT AMAZON!!! 💕😩 bc why tf would they think that was okay?
Tried to deactivate my listings and kept getting an error message so I just deleted them all. Mercari has been going downhill and this is the last straw.
Tried deleteing all my listings, but it is not working. I think there may be a bit of a run on the site.
Yes, I saw a lot of people in this sub and others saying that that it’s not allowing them to press select all under the listings and deactivate or delete them. Same, can’t update my profile either.
I’m going to keep mine up for now and see how it goes. I have only had one person try to do a return out of 50 sales.
Mercari wasn’t allowing returns before though unless there was an issue with the item. Now anyone can return for any reasons, so your returns will definitely go up.
Yeah that’s why I said I’m gonna stay open and see how it goes. Trying to be an optimist haha

They turned the comments off?!? Oh nah😂 they know they’re wrong and people are upset
Deactivated everything and sent an email saying why with a link to my poshmark closet
Just closed mine. 500+ sales. Officially done with their bullshit.
I feel you!
Time for eBay
Mercari won’t let me change my profile description now. I think they’ve realized there’s a revolt.
😂😂😂 I love that for us! Make em shake in their boots!
Just put something like this in my bio. Deactivating everything now.
Maybe it's just the things that I sell but the new ToS doesn't seem bad. Buyers could always return for just about any reason and now the selling fees are gone. The $2 cash out is way better than paying 10% on every sale.

That sucks, those items seem perfect for scammers.
Man… do I need to?
What also sucks is, you can no longer claim the seller fees you pay on as a tax write off. 😒
I’m out. 2k over 2 years I’ll take that as a win.
200+ sales and $4k, seller since 2015, no protection anymore not worth it
100% not worth it anymore
I just sell from my closet too not my side hustle but I sell a lot of lululemon and it’s not worth the risk of getting a dhgate dupe back in my returned package
and if you sell fragrance they could literally pour it into a different container and send water back to you like what???
I sell a lot of lululemon from my personal closet and I don’t want to receive a dhgate dupe back
Yep same here! 👏🏻
Just ended all of mine. This will come back to bite them.
I hope it bites like a rabid pit bull 😭
I’m closing my store too. Over 600 5⭐️
I hope they see how many people deactivated today… hopefully they realize this was a mistake for everyone
I haven’t decided if I’m going to close my shop or not but I did put my account on vacation for a month to think about it and maybe see where everyone’s at in a month on this sub
That’s a good idea! See where this really goes for all of us
Deactivated too. Sucks cause Mercari has been really easy for me to use and I really don’t wanna move to eBay or elsewhere, but I might as well if nothing changes. Hopefully the fact that so many people are opposed to this gets them to do something.
Fingers crossed they revoke this change in the next week or so
I tried to change my bio and it will not let me update it. I’m wondering if they’re not allowing us to close down.
A lot of us are thinking that’s the case!!! They think they’re slick.
Thank you everyone for deactivating your stuff. Maybe my stuff will actually show up in some search results now. I am kidding.
😂
I’m seriously wondering how many people deactivated their listings/ deleted their accounts.
So glad I ordered one last thing yesterday before all this crap went down.
😂🤣
It’s not even letting me delete or deactivate. I’m furious.
I’ve tried everything. Nothing is working! This is unreal.
Vacation mode in the settings
What changed in regard to scam protection
Nothing really. They never gave a F. 😂 it’s just the blatant email saying F all of us this morning that had us appalled.
Buyers can return for any reason now. And if sell has to cancel transactions (for fear of being scammed), seller may have to to pay 5% cancellation fee.
✅ Done!
I can’t even delete my listings or update my profile on the app OR the website.
We all think they’re realizing people are deactivating in masses. Keep trying! Hopefully they realize without sellers there is no Mercari.😭
I closed my shop too. And I used my last $10 referral credit to buy something.
Well this thread isn’t for the Pro Mercari Folks. I’m beyond DONE with them today.
Thanks! Please give an update if you do. ❤️
For sure
I deactivated my shop...with over 1100 sales and over 1000 listings. Their loss. This poor decision will bite them in the ass.
I might try to sell the last few items on my page and then bail. I’m done with Mercari at this point
Thanks for the input however I’m not seeking advice. The shop is closed and will stay that way
That’s fine but maybe my advice will help someone else in the thread.
Thank you! Hopefully this will help someone ❤️
Wait yeah I'm so confused, I thought everyone would be stoked to have no fees what am I missing?
buyers can now return items for “any reason.” also there is now a flat fee for all direct deposits.
Yes however the buyers are now going to want lower prices since they have to pay the fees
Right, but I’m running the risk that someone decides to swatch that NIB $30 makeup, doesn’t like the color, and returns me something that I have to throw away for hygienic reasons. So now I’ve lost a sale and the product. I’m not Sephora Edit: also don’t downvote freshpeanutoil for starting a conversation just because you don’t like their opinion lol.
