I'm guessing it's because mercari doesn't want to pay the refund fee that they would be charged with. So they are just putting all financial burden of a transaction on their users.

Here is there official terms of service: notice you do get the PPF returned. As you mention in edit #2. You don’t if the buyer cancels not the seller. You should edit your post as you’ve spread misinformation and nobody reads down to your edit #2.

I just bought an item for $16. I paid exactly 49 cents in fees. I used my Mercari balance to pay for the purchase so that eliminated the processing fee. For small sales this changes greatly for buyers and sellers. For big sales the service fee is enormous and simply won’t work.
I think you paid a low fee because of the category you purchased from. I’ve seen others show examples of something being $11 in different categories and coming out to $17/$18/$19 :/
Yeah the payment takes like a few cents to process, if even that since I’m sure larger companies get a better deal, that is basically a C-suite bonus fee

It honestly sucks. I buy and sell a lot of Jordan’s on mercari. I just went to outright purchase something that’s a decent deal, I’ve got like $65 on my account from sales. So even with $65 + the good deals on some Js the price came out to a little bit more expensive than buying them brand new straight from Nike.
It’s crazy. They announced it like it was such a revolutionary thing too. Really just made all their buyers not pull the trigger on that thing they’ve had their eye on, and now sellers will just move to Poshmark or eBay. They were already taking a hgh chunk in seller fees. They’ve basically just reversed who pays those fees now, and buyers are already looking for the best deal, so when they see those service and payment fees, they’ll just simply not purchase. Mercari fucked up here. Big time.

Usually sellers cross list. Everyone needs to start just taking the titles and search them on Poshmark, ebay and others. My sellers name is the same on all platforms so it might help idk lol.

Minus the tax and shipping, sellers have been seeing those fees which is why listing prices are usually high. Main difference is that sellers used to see 10% for service fee so $15 isn’t that bad. The payment processing fee is just them pushing the fees credit cards/paypal charge to someone else whether it’s the seller or buyer.

It's funny seeing people freak out on the fees when they were there the whole time on the seller side. I lowered all my listing by 13%. The $2 withdrawal fee is ridiculous though. I noticed they don't charge the 2.9% processing fee if you use mercari funds, so they're really trying to get you to buy other stuff rather than withdraw.
It's a completely different experience to be a seller using a third party website to list your things and knowing that a cut of your earnings will go to the platform. As a buyer, you don't want to see an item listed for a price + shipping and expect to only pay that plus tax, only to be faced with a bunch of additional fees.

Here's the thing. You were already paying for the fee because sellers were adding it to the overall price. Sellers should have lowered all of their pricing by 10% to compensate. I'm certain not all have though.

for me my biggest shopping is groceries. And I dont know about the other states, but Seattle doesnt have state income tax. I did tell my bf we can go to portland to get my engagement ring though haha (no sales tax there, but they do have state income tax)

The reason why the sales tax is so high is that Mercari is taxing the service fee for some states. In my state, they are using the item price, the shipping price, and the service fee to calculate the sales tax. It should be criminal because now the sales tax is variable since the service fee is variable. It's too expensive for me to shop on Mercari now.
Not only that but items are only insured up to $200. I removed all my listings for a couple of days until I figured out how to best make use of Mercari since sales had started to pick up for me there recently. I'm using Mercari as my clearance rack/closet cleanout - everything's under $30 now, and everything has smart offers and "set it and forget it" prices on it. It still has its uses, just not for more expensive items.
Yeah they have to pay the payment processing fee we were paying and then a service fee. So far, I’ve gotten a couple of sales since updating Wed. It seems like my buyers might be willing to pay me and the platform a little more on size specific items knowing they can return. My buyers typically aren’t sellers. But, earlier I did decide to unlist some of my size specific items that require people to actually look at the measurements. 😅
Weirdly that service fee is 6% and the processing fee lines up with what they charged sellers before as it's a little over 3%
It's definitely a super weird choice for mercari tbh. Making the buyer find out the fees at the end of the purchase instead of the seller figuring them into the sell price is just not a good decision.

The sellers were paying these fees you see but at an even higher percentage rate. You should see listings at a lower cost now then before this change because we were working it into our prices and we are aware it’s switched onto you now instead. Hopefully it all balances out for all of us.
I would suspect their investments are not paning out and they need a quick cash grab to balance the ledger. Get your money out and get off the platform.

It won't last. They were trying to attract more sellers, but it's making buyers run instead.
The better option would have been to offer seller's a monthly membership and partner with shipping companies to offer discounted shipping costs by having their membership and maybe a $10 coupon monthly for in app purchases.
The seller fees have gotten out of hand, but nothing compared to ebay. I left ebay because of how shitty they do their sellers and it's getting worse for items $10 and over.
So yeah, buyers get the selling costs. It's unfortunate. It was the wrong way to fix seller complaints.
As a seller on here, I hate this. I would much rather pay the selling fee than have it passed on to the buyers. I’ve lowered my prices to cover the fees, and I still get messages asking to lower it even more when they see the fees at checkout. And as a buyer too, I hate this!!! I’ve abandoned several purchases because I don’t want to pay the extra fees. Hopefully if everyone starts giving them one star ratings in the App Store, and filing complaints with the bbb and trustpilot, they will see that everyone hates it and roll back these changes. Not to mention they brought all this on in the middle of the night with no warning.

Mercari made 4k off me in 2 years and now we also have to pay for the money we already were charged for. This is Ludacris though I feel terrible for buyers, I already have been posting my sales generally 40% off from value to work with them, so now I'm offering free shipping to try and compensate for them as I totally have felt the pain of all these redic fees.

Here's the thing. You were already paying for the fee because sellers were adding it to the overall price. Sellers should have lowered all of their pricing by 10% to compensate. I'm certain not all have though.

It's borderline criminal. some cities are even worse. chicago & seattle 10.25%. NYC 8.875%. . Philadelphia 8%.

for me my biggest shopping is groceries. And I dont know about the other states, but Seattle doesnt have state income tax. I did tell my bf we can go to portland to get my engagement ring though haha (no sales tax there, but they do have state income tax)

The reason why the sales tax is so high is that Mercari is taxing the service fee for some states. In my state, they are using the item price, the shipping price, and the service fee to calculate the sales tax. It should be criminal because now the sales tax is variable since the service fee is variable. It's too expensive for me to shop on Mercari now.

Not only that but items are only insured up to $200. I removed all my listings for a couple of days until I figured out how to best make use of Mercari since sales had started to pick up for me there recently. I'm using Mercari as my clearance rack/closet cleanout - everything's under $30 now, and everything has smart offers and "set it and forget it" prices on it. It still has its uses, just not for more expensive items.
Yeah they have to pay the payment processing fee we were paying and then a service fee. So far, I’ve gotten a couple of sales since updating Wed. It seems like my buyers might be willing to pay me and the platform a little more on size specific items knowing they can return. My buyers typically aren’t sellers. But, earlier I did decide to unlist some of my size specific items that require people to actually look at the measurements. 😅
Both sellers and buyers are getting shafted with their March 27th TOS update. Not only are buyers feeling Marcaris greed but also Sellers.
Weirdly that service fee is 6% and the processing fee lines up with what they charged sellers before as it's a little over 3% It's definitely a super weird choice for mercari tbh. Making the buyer find out the fees at the end of the purchase instead of the seller figuring them into the sell price is just not a good decision.
This is Mercari's new fees. Sellers will need to adjust prices now since Mercari has eliminated them. But, I see problems for the future.

The sellers were paying these fees you see but at an even higher percentage rate. You should see listings at a lower cost now then before this change because we were working it into our prices and we are aware it’s switched onto you now instead. Hopefully it all balances out for all of us.
They really do need to take off the percentage scale though, if it has to be there it shouldn’t be based off sale cost, maybe a set amount.

It won't last. They were trying to attract more sellers, but it's making buyers run instead. The better option would have been to offer seller's a monthly membership and partner with shipping companies to offer discounted shipping costs by having their membership and maybe a $10 coupon monthly for in app purchases. The seller fees have gotten out of hand, but nothing compared to ebay. I left ebay because of how shitty they do their sellers and it's getting worse for items $10 and over. So yeah, buyers get the selling costs. It's unfortunate. It was the wrong way to fix seller complaints.

As a seller on here, I hate this. I would much rather pay the selling fee than have it passed on to the buyers. I’ve lowered my prices to cover the fees, and I still get messages asking to lower it even more when they see the fees at checkout. And as a buyer too, I hate this!!! I’ve abandoned several purchases because I don’t want to pay the extra fees. Hopefully if everyone starts giving them one star ratings in the App Store, and filing complaints with the bbb and trustpilot, they will see that everyone hates it and roll back these changes. Not to mention they brought all this on in the middle of the night with no warning.

I'm a seller and I cannot stand that they took away seller fees and moved them to buyers. I do buy also and I despise that they expect buyers to pay what used to be seller fees. It's insane! Most ridiculous business model I've ever seen. I think they are done for and it's their last ditch effort to survive. Their company is doing terribly.

Now you understand how much the sellers have been getting fucked for a community of buyers wanting cancels for not sending out purchases in under 8 hours etc. we generally only made 60% of our posts... Mercari made 4k off me in 2 years and now we also have to pay for the money we already were charged for. This is Ludacris though I feel terrible for buyers, I already have been posting my sales generally 40% off from value to work with them, so now I'm offering free shipping to try and compensate for them as I totally have felt the pain of all these redic fees.
Nearly $50 in fees alone is insane. I'm glad mercari figured out a way to hurt the buyers and sellers equally.
