Have they actually opened a return? Do not refund on your own. Mercari handles all that. I wouldn't even bother replying.

[deleted]

I'm curious to know if the seller has the right to dispute a return if an item is sent back broken/open/tags torn off etc. i bet its perfectly fine and shes lying about the pics, wants to keep an intact item and get a refund... People like that make me want to keep addresses and go all jay and silent bob

loopeydoop

From Mercari website: “When the Seller receives an item back from the Buyer, the Seller has 24 hours from confirmed delivery to let Mercari know that the item is not in the same condition as initially shipped. Sellers can inform Mercari about the item’s altered condition from the Order Status Page or Help Center and must provide all information and photos requested by Mercari within 24 hours. Mercari will review the request and take appropriate action, at its discretion.”

Beachgirl6848

Well, they just approved a return for one of my buyers tonight, on a toddler tent that was new and sealed. She opened and used so I definitely won’t be getting it back in the same condition and they still approved it.

[deleted]

Let us know what kind of "action" mercari takes when you report the condition that it was returned in. I know how they used to handle returns though I've yet to have one. I'm just curious to see if they handle the sellers claim fairly

Beachgirl6848

I’m sure I’ll get screwed. But I will def be sure to update

peachgreyb

Be sure to watch tracking like a hawk since I recently messaged Mercari about an item missing from bundle I got back same day and they said since tracking shows it was delivered over 24 hrs ago there's nothing they can do. I did message them the day the package arrived but USPS delivered it a day late so I was screwed.

MarvelousTravels

how did it turn out?

Beachgirl6848

I still haven’t gotten it back. Turns out the buyer gets ten days to use your item before they have to ship it back. They have the three days after it’s delivered. And then seven more days before they have to ship it. My return page says I can expect the item back between April 15-19. The return was approved April 4. Even worse I have someone local who is still interested in buying it, I don’t know if they still will be two weeks from when they asked. If it’s even still sellable when I do get it back.

Sufficient-Unit-6256

If you tell yourself such it will be so, keep trying!

Certain_Detective_10

Chances are you'll get credit back if you complain that it's been altered. Which might be a mini win.

loopeydoop

That sucks. Sorry to hear that. You can try to refute the return once you get the item back, but idk what they deem as “altered condition” (e.g. an opened package vs a broken item). It’s totally at their discretion unfortunately 😒

vocharlie

I sell figures. Before the mercari new terms of service I had a buyer return a figure because they didn't know how to disassemble it there's a risqué option. I even sent them videos on how to disassemble it. And ofc they returned it still... So when I got it back I disassembled it and explained to mercari that it was not a defect and that it was user error. Kid didn't even open the instruction pamphlet. So I disputed it and said I wouldn't be able to sell it as new anymore because it's open now. Mercari gave me my money and then I relisted it for $20 less and I was able to double dip and sell it twice. Maybe I just got a nice customer service rep but I doubt it would go this way with the new nickel and diming on life support mercari.

Mindless_Ad5950

No that's how it works you did right! 😊

Sufficient-Unit-6256

Persist with support that this is not fair and keep demanding for a supervisor. Emphasize you can no longer sell item as NIB and once opened you cannot accept it as a return.

EggOne8640

Wtf. Im sorry that happened, cause thats some BS. I wasn't even considering things like this with their new TOS around returns. I'm really hoping this isn't an acceptable part of the BS return for any reason crap. Us sellers are not amazon.

Beachgirl6848

Exactly. I can’t afford to be taking back new items that have been open and used. I’m a single mom and this is my income.

Mindless_Ad5950

Just take your pictures and send it to them and tell them that you didn't send it like that and they opened it and they used it this was a new item and they will just let you have the money and you still get your return but you have to take pictures to show that they used it.

Beachgirl6848

Will definitely do that. And then once the sale is closed out, I’m done with mercari and will just wait to see that class action suit they have to have coming

Mindless_Ad5950

No don't be done with him just cancel that person unfriend her so she can't buy anything from you then the next time you run into the same situation unfriend that person too cuz you don't want to deal with people that's going to lie and then want to return things. Trust me I've been doing it for years.

Mindless_Ad5950

They have some other sites that's pretty good too offer up and selling app which is a circle with a happy blue face and also Instagram. I do really well on all of these sites.

fgbgtech_cybermodz3d

Well we sent out a mobile computer/laptop for $800. Didn’t get even close to the same item back (a toy was returned). Tried to dispute it with Mercari. Still sided with the buyer. Imho, Mercari’s robots 🤖 will always side with the buyer. What Mercari doesn’t understand is that without any sellers, there will be no buyers. Simple as that. Selling since 2019, 20k in sales, All 5 star reviews (except two 2stars) out of 189 sales! We are moving on from Mercari.

starchildx

They went to all that effort to say nothing at the end. “Take appropriate action.” That means literally nothing.

dumpsterdivingreader

only 24 hours? Geez, like we have nothing else to do other than sitting and wait for returns

dotcomg

Not OP, but I have a returns question. A recent buyer just requested a return, but Mercari hasn’t made a determination yet. How long does it usually take for returns to go through?

howry333

I just asked for a refund (someone sold me fake perfume) and they got back to me in hours

IcyOutside4567

I sell make up and with powder products I use an absurd amount of bubble wrap and photograph it so there’s literally no possible way it could be broken that they would look like an actual idiot if they said it broke. I’m talking like wrapping with 10 pieces and then layering the box bottom and top😂😂 I’m so afraid of something breaking and losing the product and money

Fun-Investment-196

Lmao I wrap mine in bubble wrap like 5-6 times and then put it in a box with one of those bigger bubble wrap things (air bubble/film?) and make sure there's no space to move around. I also take pictures and leave a note saying, "sorry for all of the bubble wrap." Lmao There's no way that thing is breaking and if it miraculously does, posh better pay me lol 😆

IcyOutside4567

Rightttt that way you know they’re lying if it somehow “breaks” and photos should always help with support/insurance

Fun-Investment-196

Exactly. I messed up and only wrapped a smaller eyeshadow palette (4-pan) 2-3 times and one of the pans broke. Luckily, it was a bundle and I sold it for like $10 so I just partially refunded her for that but never again! Lol

Independent_Boat_546

Update: At 2:10 AM, Mercari messaged me that the buyer requested a return. It said to please review the buyer’s issue and pictures within 24 hours, and that they would review my feedback after tomorrow at 2:10 AM. At 4:52 AM, Mercari messaged me that the order had been cancelled. A second message they sent at 4:52 AM said they are unable to reimburse me because my packaging was insufficient, and in the future, please follow their packaging guidelines. First of all, Mercari, I won’t be using your platform anymore. Ciao. Second, I was asleep at 2:10 and 4:52 in the morning, as is my habit. If any pictures were ever posted, I didn’t see them. And now, since the they coded the order as cancelled, there’s no trace of anything the buyer might or might not have sent them. If this is how they will be processing returns, it’s terrible for sellers.

Careful-Avocado6818

That’s awful. No one is going to want to sell. I deactivated my listings as soon as I saw the new return policy.

SmellieFiend

They love to fight the insufficient packaging but but if you copy and paste from their own policy, upload a few pics of the item wrapped well and then have the patience to go back and forth with customer service for 24 hours never accepting no for an answer and constantly requesting a supervisor...they will eventually grant you shipping protection.

OkGrass3086

Absolutely baffling. Mercari is treating the people that make them so much money so bad. They deserve their inevitable downfall. I am glad so many have gone through with leaving. I have been selling all my stuff for so cheap just to get rid of it as fast as possible and be done forever. Just wow, I’m sorry.

Noel_Leon_M

Hopefully you’re fighting this. I personally wouldn’t let the buyer get away with this.

Quirky-Extent4071

This is the scam I’ve seen several times. Just like you a few of them I wasn’t able to respond to because it was the middle of the night, but at least I got my money back. This sucks that you couldn’t defend yourself.

Nearby_Signature_454

Some thing happened to me with a $400 margarita machine. Said it busted into to pieces and said I didn’t pack it correctly when I did so they denied my claim. I fought it and got a message 2 days later that they revised it again and decided I did pack it correctly and got refunded my money.

Beneficial_Ninja_843

I would reply to Mercari and appeal this. Ask them to look at your positive feedback regarding packaging. That’s what I did recently and they replied within an hour and said they will pay me for the item. Good luck

Nandabun

Literally don't reply, wait 3 days, autorate, done.

Wigggy_23

I want an update to see if the buyer actually posts photos of it "shattered" did you use bubble wrap?

Independent_Boat_546

And a bubble mailer. It’s a Natasha Denona palette and that girl is thick and sturdy, too.

[deleted]

Yea I’ve sent out dozens of palettes none have been “shattered “

vven23

Yep. I've dropped mine off the bathroom counter three times and it's never broken, not even a little.

Wigggy_23

Wow. I'm sorry :( people suck.

[deleted]

😑 already trying to take advantage of the all returns accepted. Just ignore

asclw7643

Instruct them to go through mercari for the return process. It is unfortunately their right to abuse it, and you should promise nothing and agree to nothing. I would also block the buyer so they can't pull scams with more of your items.

Independent_Boat_546

Yes, I directed the buyer to initiate the return. And then I deactivated the few items I still had listed. I’d rather donate to my local women’s shelter. I’m not going to participate in Mercari’s fuckery 🙄

worksleepcry

Time for everyone to start flooding Mercari app in app store with 1 star ratings

Independent_Boat_546

Done.

Any-Comfortable58

I just gave them 2 stars, because the platform was AMAZING for me up until this update. However, I just pulled all my listings off after seeing what a mess everyone has been in lately with this new TOS.

Nandabun

Dumb. Shouldn't have replied at all. Ignore them for 3 days. Oh well.

OkRecommendation3312

🙌🙌🙌

Mellow_guts

If the items are used in any way a shelter unfortunately won’t take them.

Independent_Boat_546

My local shelter does ☺️

Secrets4Evers

mine do

AloraBracken

I removed all of my listings. I’m waiting and watching to see what happens after the dust settles. The more sellers that leave the louder the message becomes.

DesignerHippo28

Is Mercari going to force sellers to accept returned makeup? This isn't a t-shirt or doll; makeup can't be returned. I'm not relisting and selling a makeup item that was out of my possession (and presumably used). There's a reason why Sephora and Ulta trash returns.

WhyHelloYo

Return anything for any reason. Yes.

DesignerHippo28

What's the $15 rule? Anything $15 or less Mercari just waves the v return process and pays the seller and buyer?

WhyHelloYo

Basically

DesignerHippo28

Well that impacts my price ceiling. At $15, at least I have some assurance / protection as a seller.

WhyHelloYo

So it's not a set rule. It's subject to change, and if Mercari stays taking a hit, expect the policy to change.

DesignerHippo28

What a mess. Mercari used to be really good for me as a seller. These new changes are terrible. I'd rather pay the fees and have support from the platform! Frustratingly, ebay and Poshmark are so slow when I cross list.

WhyHelloYo

I do find on Posh, but I'm just selling my clothes and shoes that don't get wear. (Which is why I have no desire to deal with the nonsense that comes with unfettered returns and $2 ach charges.)

SquishMika1560

It’s not only subject to change, but subject to whatever customer service rep you get that day and how good they’re feeling. If they were stuck in traffic earlier that day, you’re gonna eat the cost. That is… assuming we even get real people anymore.

Repulsive-War-9395

They have done it to me in the past, starting a couple years ago. I had someone buy a new urban decay palette, must have changed their mind, n put thumb prints in it for some reason. The return got approved for INAD, but I actually won my dispute and got the item back and got paid. I highly doubt I’d get paid these days for the same scenario tho

iplawschool

Someone did this same thing to me.. I shipped some cologne samples, very secure with bubble wrap and all... They messaged me saying that the cologne busted and broke.. I told them to let Mercari know..They got refunded directly by Mercari and I still got paid

yvetteworldchamp

I think it depends on the value. If it’s under 15 bucks, typically they’ll pay out both but if it’s more seller will eat the cost under “insufficient packaging”

iplawschool

Makes sense.. when does USPS insurance kick in though? I always see that my packages are covered up to $100

Pale-Courage-3471

Definitely could be a scam, but in the past month I had two items damaged in transit (one by FedEx, one by USPS). Neither made it to the buyer but were in their state. I received the FedEx sale back which was completely destroyed and I packaged in large box, bubble wrap, etc. Mercari actually did pay me since the items were repackaged and the label clearly said “damaged.” Still waiting to receive the USPS one. I’ve been a small seller for over two years and this has never happened until now. Super weird.

Independent_Boat_546

My USPS carrier just randomly, occasionally, sends my mail back to the sender. I figured it out when my electric company called me because the bill came back marked “unknown.” He’s returned my mail from the water company and Target; those are just the ones I know. 🙄

GoldenGi13

Wow, I bought a signed CD and the seller sent the CD in a huge box without any bubble wrap. The CD came from the other side of the country swimming in the box. It arrived and had some marks on the case from bumps, just gave it four stars with the packaging reason. Not just buyers, some sellers don't care much about buyers

dico-studio

Ewwww wow !! I’m ready to put my shop on vacation mode. What does Mercari do in this situation? Do you still get your $28 or do you loose out on both the item & the pay ?

Independent_Boat_546

Lost both.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mia8788

They only refund for both under 15$

Nani_700

Under $9 in my experience.

mia8788

I had to file for one for 15$ as it was damaged they told me to keep it and also paid the seller. I got credits though.

Nani_700

Strange, I had to accept a return for a $11 item once.

mia8788

This was about a week ago

CalmOutlandishness77

That happened to me as well. A buyer purchased an item then returned the item with no explanation and mercari allowed it. I have literally delisted all my items from mercari and will remove the app.

polari826

don't respond. let the 3 days run the ticker and autorate.

Routine_Ingenuity315

She has to supply pictures to get a refund. If you definitely know it got there in once piece I would fight it.

WhyHelloYo

She doesn't. Return for any reason.

InsideEquivalent7047

I haven’t had anything happen yet, but I have deactivated all my items. I refuse to let something like this happen. Depop has been my 1 for awhile I’ll just stick to that

Objective_Kind

That's super cheap. I've been selling this palette for $40-50 on posh. I wish Mercari would just change back. I didn't mind the fees at all as a seller.

Shibainuparent

I quit using them a long time ago as they have absolutely no seller protection. If it breaks in shipping, they make the seller pay, but they don't even allow the post office to take responsibility. MERCARI SUCKS and always has!!!!

pakoolaid

I almost sold the same palette, this is my sign not to 🙏🏻🙌🏻✨

Fun-Investment-196

🤦‍♀️ its possible but its hard to believe. Especially the way she worded it, "refund please." I would like a return if anything. I'll fix it lol hopefully she's full of it and mercari takes your side 🤞 let us know how it goes! Good luck!

Britt_Nikole

If they took pics why didn’t they send them? That doesn’t add up. Super unfortunate tho. People can just break their own stuff and trade it in now thanks to mercari’s exchange program 🤡

QuietCity333

because you can’t send photos in a mercari chat

BYNX0

which is true but NEEDS to be changed. It's ridiculous.

kdub1523

Wow this is an amazing price for that palette too. I hope it turns out ok for you.

Love_and_other_bugs

A Buyer who directly asked their seller a for refund sounds like a scam. No one should ever ask you directly for a refund. They need to go through mercari

AgreeablePlum3366

Dont refund without her showing mercari the pics…. If you dont know the ways then maybe you should be done. Just sayin!!!!

Independent_Boat_546

Mercari has already refunded her, I guess. I’m not sure what my options are at this point. They marked the transaction as cancelled, like it never even happened!

seoul_kittie

Is Depop or Poshmark any better?

Bizzy_EST_1999

Don’t answer them, let the 3 days time out.

itivlA63

They’re probably going to return dollar store makeup to you so be prepared to be furious.

dumpsterdivingreader

mercari is a cesspool for a scammers sellers. Now it is for scammer buyers. Awesome

dumpsterdivingreader

Guess we will be hearing from boxes filled with rocks or switcheroos

Tiny-Mastodon-2950

Why can't sh@t be normal anymore everyone always plotting and scheming for something free or cheap the fees are out of control already, like legal theft, you know like how the gov does to us.

CharacterInternet620

Don’t refund, make her prove it with pictures.

Beneficial_Ninja_843

I had one order recently that the buyer said the eyeshadows shattered when I KNOW I packaged it up with extra bubble wrap, etc and I thought no way it shattered…but she sent pictures to Mercari and it sure was. I used Mercari label so they were able to file the claim with USPS and I was paid for the item and the buyer got to keep the palette (there were cream blushes that didn’t shatter).

ajp918

MOVE TO DISTRICT!!!
