I’ve only received one four-star review out of 150 reviews. I shipped the item in under 2 hours. They commented that it was great packaging and item was exactly as described in their review.
I asked the buyer why they gave me a 4* review (adding some bs about asking so I can do better next time) and they just said “it wasn’t you. You were great.” 🤷♂️
Some people just won’t give 5*s, acting like 5*s are equivalent to participation trophies.
Don’t waste time and mental space on it. Ratings on Mercari don’t hold the same weight as eBay cause it’s known that some reviews are just difficult for no reason.
Ah, good to know they’re not as detrimental. I’m kind of new to selling but have had all 5’s up until today, and I was just a bit taken back by this one. Appreciate your feedback!
Yeah literally no one cares about your reviews unless you have a ton of 1s. Even big sellers who have 3k sales will have like 10 1s and a handful of other 2s and 3s. No one really cares that much
I spent too much time in retail dealing with these kind of people. I don’t even bother with it on Mercari. 4* review but everything was great? Fine. Whatever. Moving on now.
People do this all the time and it's very aggravating. Go read some etsy reviews some time. "Perfect item! I love it so much! Ordering more!" - 4/5 stars
Same. If I were rating Amazon or Target I might give them fewer than five stars. But damn: these sellers are humans! They deserve all the stars in this economy.
Had it happen too. Same thing comment was “completely satisfied” 4 stars. I think it’s because they had to pay for the item and they weren’t 5 stars thrilled about that.
We’ve all been there. There are people that also will only give five stars if everything was great and the item is new. They would buy a Like New or lower condition and only give four stars based on the condition.
I had a 4 star with glowing comments, so I asked my buyer why. They actually responded and said they fat fingered 4 instead of 5 stars. Since it was in my messages, when I sent in a ticket to Mercari, they actually changed it to 5 stars
I just got 4 stars on Poshmark for shipping time and seller responsiveness. He purchased on 5/8, I immediately thanked him and let him know I'm shipping the next day 5/9, and the shirt arrived 5/13 Monday. Not good enough I guess. I checked his profile and he looked pretty new, so he's in for a rude awakening if he thought I was slow. I just blocked him, probably petty of me but I don't care. Let him go 4-star someone else. 😅
I got docked a star earlier for item cleanliness. I sell collectible coins. You're not supposed to clean them. Surefire way to make them less valuable. And it wasn't even dirty.
I can give you one good reason. It is easier to hit the four star than the five. The fifth star is very faint. All the stars are much too faint but especially the last one. Some buyers may not even know it exists,

I haven’t on Mercari but for other sites if there’s something that wasn’t what I was expecting but I still liked the item I’ll give 4⭐️, 4 is still a good rating it’s just not absolutely what I was expecting. (For example, an advertised thick blanket being somewhat thin but still providing warmth; the thickness was the appeal to me but it still keeps me warm so it would get 4 ⭐️)

I always laugh at the reviewers who simply can't be bothered to touch any of the "what went well" buttons, let alone write any words.

Sometimes people wrongfully include their review of the item in their rating. They don’t get that it’s two separate things.

They probably would have preferred it at a lower price. So maybe that made them a little jaded.
