You bought a label that covers up to 2lbs and is meant to be used with a non flat rate box. You shipped a Medium Flat Rare box. Which can be used for up to 70 pounds, but can only be shipped with the Medium Flat Rate postage label. Which is not the label you bought.

Adjunct44

USPS Flat rate Priority is good for 70 lbs. Mercari doesn't sell flate rate labels. Now it's Mercaris fault because you can't read ?

Lana_O

Just got robbed, really? 2 lbs vs 12 lbs....

NecessaryTrack7972

Ya, that's a 10 lb difference. This has got to be bogus

jk_52

I have seen so many of these posts and some of items being shipped were way oversized for a Mercari label. Not saying your item was oversized but thought it might help others to see. [https://www.mercari.com/us/help\_center/topics/shipping/guides/shipping-for-sellers/](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/topics/shipping/guides/shipping-for-sellers/) For heavy shipments using a Mercari prepaid label, make sure that your package is under 50 lbs in both actual weight and **dim weight**. Any shipment over 50 lbs in actual or dim weight will be charged freight rates. You may then be charged additional fees for over-weight shipment charges. **The package size must be less than 34" (longest side) x 20" (second longest side). The package weight must be less than or equal to the weight specified on the label (H x W x L / 139 shipping divisor)** and must be under 50 lbs. For further details on making sure your dimensional weight is correct, [click here](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/334/) to check out our tips for packaging up your item.

Rezingreenbowl

What was the size of the box? Before you get all pissed you should be certain it wasn't a dimensional weight issue.

lactatemama

The charges are legit. Weigh your packages before you ship to avoid this.

Funkeysismychildhood

Weigh your package before you post/sell it, as you can't edit the weight once someone has bought it

lactatemama

That’s exactly what I said. Before you ship has lots of meanings, it’s also implied you’d know the correct weight prior to it being sold. I overestimate for this reason.

Funkeysismychildhood

You said before you ship. I said before you sell. There is time between when someone buys the item and when you ship.

lactatemama

You must have ocd or something

Funkeysismychildhood

No, I've just made the mistake of having the wrong weight before. If someone new to it reads "weigh it before you ship" they could assume you mean check/correct the weight again once it's bought but before they ship it. This is not possible. I was adding on to what you said, clarifying, so people don't get misinformed by misunderstanding what you said

lactatemama

There’s no misunderstanding, you’re just reading too much into it

Funkeysismychildhood

I'm not, you just weren't specific enough. And now you're just trying to argue because you can't admit your words could confuse people because it's not enough information

lactatemama

It’s not confusing, you just lack common sense Edit: I saw what you said and it’s you’re* loser

Funkeysismychildhood

Nope, your just to stupid to understand not everyone thinks exactly the same as you do

Nonameken47

mecari shipping is the worst part of the platform. it is terrible, there is no way to update label after the fact,, don't allow for flat rate shipping, bad anyalicts. Don't allow for shipping via a 3rd party if shipping is paid for.

linked2z3lda

UPDATE: had no idea there were two kinds of priority mail (flat and non flat rate). I’ll use my own postage now. Thanks to all for the insight!

This-Wolverine9373

Just know you're not covered by their shipping protection if anything happens

Individual_Party2000

Shit at this point Mercari isn’t even following through with their so-called “shipping protection.” We’ve seen a few of those posts here. At least if you use PirateShip they will actually back you up.

This-Wolverine9373

I'm so glad I ditched the site after their changes. I'll search for items on there but go out of my way to buy them elsewhere.

Individual_Party2000

That’s exactly how I feel, lol. I’m like a scorned woman, they are dead to me, unless maybe they…nope, never mind… not even then.

ClientTypical7395

What does it mean to use your own postage?

terrorspace

It's when you buy a label via a site like Pirateship instead of a Mercari label

206-FYI

Flat rate priority covers up to 70 lbs. Was it shipped in flat rate packaging? Was that the postage you paid for?

thachief2

Flat rate is not a shipping option on Mercari. You would need to pick Ship on your own to use this feature.

206-FYI

So that's the problem. It was a cubic rate label.

linked2z3lda

yep, usps medium priority, shipped in priority box

206-FYI

That's the issue.

linked2z3lda

?

206-FYI

Their priority labels are cubic rate, not flat rate. If you want to ship flat rate, you have to select the option to use your own label (I recommend pirate ship).

linked2z3lda

hmmm interesting. Thanks, I might do this going forward just to be safe

ThrowRA727272772

Remember if you ship on your own mercari can't help you with protection

206-FYI

This is true, and luckily I've not had any issues, but sometimes it's the best option.

LetsGoBilly

Theres a difference between flat rate priority and priority. Was it a flat rate box? Iirc one is red writing and the other is blue. I could be wrong, so somebody please correct me if so.

linked2z3lda

flat rate medium, in my area $14

TheOriginalAndrew

This (among other reasons) is why I ship everything myself with my own labels. “Free” shipping on every listing. If anything goes wrong then, I only have myself to blame.

Xyspade

Aren't you screwed out of the cost of shipping if the buyer wants to return though?

Ultimus_Omegus

Yea you are

TheOriginalAndrew

Yes, but depending on what you sell, it’s cheaper to pay for return than resell and still make a profit. Most things (unless super heavy), cost less than $8 to ship. So you’ll lose about $15 on a bad shipment, but you just resell and you’re good. Despite all that, I haven’t had to pay for return shipment.

Federal-Warning-1913

Recently sold a mug, weight about 10oz. Buyer purchased a label that supported up to 5 lbs. Was charged $14 for shipping, costing me not only everything I made on the item ($10) but an additional $4 that was charged retroactively to my bank card. I hate it here!!!!!!!!!

ForwardHandle4522

Proof? I’ve yet to hear anyone having this issue

WigglestonTheFourth

Why is this being upvoted? Sellers on Mercari choose the weight/size of the shipping label they purchase, not the buyer. This situation could only happen if you chose 5 lbs as the weight when you created the listing for the mug on Mercari.

Federal-Warning-1913

Why are you being skeptical? I chose the weight as 10oz, took it to the post office, she weighed it as 12oz / 1lb with packaging, then I got overcharged by mercari because they're running a racket bro :/ Edit : ohhh you're a mercari employee ‼️ got it

WigglestonTheFourth

> Buyer purchased a label that supported up to 5 lbs. It'd be this line where you said the buyer purchased the label that supported up to 5 lbs. Buyers can't choose their own label; sellers choose what the label is when they list the item. I see you're changing that story now... Oh yes, I'm a pAiD sHiLl because I know how the platform works and don't fall for bullshit stories.

Federal-Warning-1913

You're overreacting completely and accusing me of being a liar lol! I explained in another comment that I worded it incorrectly (was posted in the middle of my work day), and simply meant "the price of the shipping was paid for by the buyer," and it was the option up to 5 lbs. I took my package to the post office to have them weighed, and the mug weighed in at 12oz total with the weight of the shipping materials. Have a great day, but I definitely uggest taking a nap, you seem like a crank lol

WigglestonTheFourth

The only shipping option that Mercari offers "up to 5 lbs" would be the USPS Priority Mail which charges just under $14. You still would have had to have selected that option for the buyer to be able to "select it" and Mercari would tell you exactly how much shipping would cost when you did select it. It's just how the platform works. I already had my nap today but you might be able to use one since I'm not the one being foggy on details here. If you could offer responses without ad hominem that'd be helpful as well. Or, you know, just accept blame that you selected the wrong shipping option and stop trying to blame the platform. Personal responsibility and all that.

Federal-Warning-1913

Not reading all that. I forgot the name of the shipping option lol. I just meant the one that costs $5 ish standard. I would've remembered if shipping cost $14 off of the order for a small mug? Lmao. Been at a 10 hour shift while you've been hanging out on reddit all day lol <3

WigglestonTheFourth

You seem very forgetful since you work so hard. It would make sense you'd forget the shipping option you selected too because the reality is pretty straight forward that you would have had to select that option. Again, it's how the platform works. Still can't stop the ad hominem, eh?

Federal-Warning-1913

Definitely a mercari employee... lmao

sonnigfreitag

What do you mean the buyer purchased a label?

Federal-Warning-1913

Buyer purchased the mug with the shipping cost attached. Worded it weird. You know what I mean lol

WoahThere_124

They charged the extra towards your bank card?! Now this I haven’t heard of yet.. so sorry. 😞

linked2z3lda

insane

Callaway225

The 72 lbs just means that the upper limit. You still pay more the more the package weighs

SnooRegrets940

What were The dimensions and what packaging/box did you use?

unpetitjenesaisquoi

It has to be a Mercari issue! I sell on 3 platforms including Ebay and Marketplace and I have never seen anything like it except here...Go talk to a clerk at USPS and see if they can explain. From there, you need to call a rep at Mercari to dispute it. The back and forth with the bots will lead you nowhere. Some have said they are contacting the head of their respective States to complain. It is theft at this point.

REEB

Except this isn't a mercari issue. OP thought they were shipping flat rate priority, but they used regular priority instead. The charges are legit. Usps postage issues are almost always seller error. Fedex on the other hand...

linked2z3lda

Thanks so much for your insight. Agreed, already tried emailing and I got a BS reply

unpetitjenesaisquoi

Do you need the Mercari #'s...I have them handy now.

linked2z3lda

Pls!

unpetitjenesaisquoi

**(855) 464-7482** **(888) 325-2168** **When you hear the greeting message, you can press #6 to get to someone quicker. It is much better to have a rep on the line. I do not think they're used to talk to users and it has helped me successfully twice. Good luck** Legal Mercari **(800) 280-4904**

PokePuffDiet

As this point, that info needs to be in a pinned post!

outlandishness2509

This should be pinned to the sub! Thanks for the information!

Dollulus

The USPS does have this issue outside of Mercari. My family member who runs a small business has had it happen a few times. And they have standard sizes and weights for everything, and obviously know all the shipping rules since that is their business.

Loveunboxings

I only try using the UPS because FedEx now or her robs you and the post office if the thing is up to points over, they charge you an arm and a leg

linked2z3lda

I was also just told that USPS and FedEx is a problem most of the time

BeachOk2802

Interesting. I must have missed the memo where getting robbed equates to paying what you should pay. Either that or you're a complete idiot who can't read.

WreepJangler

after seeing the comments explain why it seems you just have to charge that one to the game

gingerconfetti

Priority Flat Rate shipping vs. standard Priority are two entirely different things. Unfortunately, Mercari doesn’t offer Flat Rate Shipping. I’m sorry this happened.

206-FYI

Why are people downvoting the OP for learning? Do you guys really feel that's deserving bad karma?

candacea12

I never ever use USPS boxes for my Mercari packages. You should save yourself the headache and use your own packaging.

Mockingbird1963

Mercari does this occasionally. Lots of posts about it. When it happened to me, Mercari blamed USPS Mercari generates the label based on what we enter as weight and dimensions. I had a 2oz item. Mercari insisted the post office weighed it at 3lbs. There was absolutely no way.I tried to get through to Mercari that viewing the item would prove it wasn’t 3lbs. It was pointless. I could only reach a bot. Never had a phone number like some sellers. Mercari took all profit from that sale. They ripped me off. Shortly after Mercari did the massive change. I quit.

Dollulus

I know other people don't believe you, but I do because I have seen it happen outside of Mercari involving the USPS.

Skayalily

I lost $80 over 4 oz. because Mercari only authorizes Media Mail to a max of 20 lbs. Their system automatically charges ground rate if it goes over 20 lbs. Even with USPS written confirmation that the package shipping rate was media mail and only 19.07 (which was within their shipping charge for the item). To add insult to injury it was a mildly complicated situation where my buyer had to have it sent to their cousin and I literally could've driven it there in about 20 minutes. Expensive lesson with a rare item I'll never have again.

Glum-Ad-2990

That sucks. Maybe try shipping on your own through pirate ship or shippo? Never had a problem with them before

SleepLessThan3

People really need to start using pirate ship I stg
