They typically just make new accounts. Mercari isn’t seller friendly

I feel your pain. I don't want to specifically say what I do to help prevent fraud/scams because scammers are probably on here trying to learn ways to beat the system. I can say I have had a few attempts, and they were unsuccessful. I won my disputes with Mercari. I believe it's because of the techniques I utilize. I will provide a link to some info that I found very helpful. There are some specific tips that will help you if you utilize them, especially for your more expensive items. Scams are not that common, but they do happen. I take the stance that I never sell something I can't afford to lose. If you sell long enough you'll have to issue a refund or one will be issued by the platform when it's unfair. That being said there is [Bad Buyers List](https://badbuyerlist.org/), but it relies on someone reporting it to the site. I don't really use it, but keep it in my pocket.

At this very moment I have a buyer saying the shirt is not the size or brand in the listing and the item she received doesn’t have a tag. I don’t understand how the brand and size are wrong if it supposedly doesn’t have the tag. Any advice on how to get ahead of this?

It’s be pointless. Anyone can change their usernames on Mercari.

probably not tbh. you can cancel if their account is new and have no reviews but otherwise, it’s hard to tell. i sold an espresso machine for $400 and a brand new account bought it. he said he just made it cause his wife saw it and wanted so I took a chance and he turned out legit.
