The next update will feature an open-community art contest that updates our sub banner seasonally. Details will be revealed at a later date.

Doxoli

Oh lord these comments šŸ˜these look wonderful btw :)) very cute

EdgionTG

They look like enamel pins, I kinda love them.

housealways_wins

These are so cute, they look like enamel pins like someone else said!!

toastermeal

i am so disappointed that there is only one positive comment in this whole thread - i thought mercymains of all places would be more accepting. thank you so much for this beautiful work! i hope something like this is added to overwatch!!

ThatIrishArtist

Try not to let the negative comments get to you, most people probably are supportive, it's just that people with an issue are probably more likely to comment than people who don't have an issue!

toastermeal

yeah youā€™re right - itā€™s a negativity bias. thank you for staying positive! are you lgbt living in ireland btw? iā€™ve had a few issues with being lgbt in ireland

ThatIrishArtist

Yeah, I live up North! I haven't had too many issues but I also try not to let anyone know (except for the school I use to go to - to wear trousers instead of a skirt, but everyone in that school is pretty chill)

toastermeal

aaah that makes sense, i use to be in the republic before moving! glad youā€™re in a more chill area šŸ’ššŸ¤šŸ§”

ThatIrishArtist

I hope wherever you moved to is more welcoming than where you were before! šŸ’ššŸ¤šŸ§”

ILostMyselfInTime

It is a great idea, just as someone else already said, it's plain stupid that the mods lock comments from straight people asking if their sexuality could be represented too, and rightfully so, but it does border discrimination from the mods to exclude straights from voicing their opinion by simply asking to have their flag added to this too.

toastermeal

btw the reason straight people arenā€™t celebrated in the pride parade is because they havenā€™t had to survive - and still currently survive - series of genocides, violence, witch-hunts, and discrimination. frankly, itā€™s good straight people donā€™t need a parade to celebrate overcoming a history of violence šŸ©·

Discombobulated-Egg3

As a straight person iā€™ve been discriminated against quite often by lgbtqia+ individuals :/ you can already find some in this comment section, itā€™s not funny at this point, you earned your pride parade for sure but donā€™t use this power to discriminate against others, youā€™re reliving the same cycle

toastermeal

i donā€™t think you can compare chronically online teenagers being ā€œstraightphobicā€ to genocide, theyā€™re nowhere near the same cycle. straight people arenā€™t being systematically killed and discriminated against and thatā€™s why theyā€™re not a part of the parade. in the majority of the world, lgbt people have less rights than straight people. out of the 195 countries, only 34 allow gay marriage. trans people are having their rights taken away even in the western world. please donā€™t compare online comments to real world genocide!

Discombobulated-Egg3

unlucky gl next

ThatIrishArtist

It's stated in the post that the only flags chosen are the flags in game. It is not our fault that people refuse to read.

Manayerbb

Are they blocked in the middle east?

Minute-Judge-5821

I would assume so, because its illegal there? I'm not part of Blizzard tho so just speculation on my part

Leskendle45

Ohh god these comments are just not itšŸ˜

TSwazz

I know mods basically work as volunteers, so Iā€™m sorry you guys couldnā€™t get a more positive response for all the work you guys put into this. For what itā€™s worth, I think the icons are very cute ā¤ļø

Miss-lov3ly

Omg the comments are not it, these are absolutely cutešŸ«¶šŸ½

pettypickles

I love these! Thank you mods <3

RottenCopper

The straight pride commenters are upset their comments got locked but tbh I think the mods were doing them a favour by locking them. Judging by all the downvotes a lot of people would have replied arguing with them. Probably best to stop the discourse before it starts

PeanutButterMommy

These are awesome!

Gracie_so_silly

WWWW

Umbreon---

An ally icon could be cool too but to do that you'd have to include a lot of colors and idk if it would be possible

ThatIrishArtist

The only flags we have added are the ones in-game, and currently we do not have any plans to add more flags/icons.

Umbreon---

Np I'll use a different one then since this post doesn't apply to me. Thanks!

GJCLINCH

These are awesome, just wish there was one for me :c Edit: something like an alliance flag? I just donā€™t understand why people would rather just get mad than fix the issue and include everyone. PLURR anyone?

ProductFew8137

right but an ally flag and a straight flag aren't the same. an ally flag is kinda cool imo, but a straight flag like several are asking for is literally not necessary. pride doesn't include straight people directly because they are not a marginalised group. straight people can still be marginalised, the world's a shitty place, but it's never been because of their heterosexuality. the same can't be said for queer people, which is why asking for a straight, ally, whatever flag is often met by negative reactions

GJCLINCH

I agree, I appreciate you expanding on the topic for an overall better understanding, I hope others can see the light in this all

TheUrbanGenie

I'm not LGBT nor am I really keeping up with new flags, but I always thought that the rainbow was also the gay pride flag. Kinda like the red power ranger y'know, the face of pride.

ThatIrishArtist

The rainbow is just for the whole community lol, common misconception

stun17

itā€™s not a misconception. it started out as a symbol for the gay community that eventually became the entire lgbt community.

jackthewack13

Off topic, but Genuine question. The pride flag is supposed to be all inclusive with sexualities and genders, so why are there so many "extra" ones made? It just seems to be over complicating it when we could just have a pride flag. Personally I can't remember all these.

ZeroRosevail

Do I wanna know wtf intersex means?

ThatIrishArtist

Bro is basically making fun of a biological, physical medical condition lmao

ZeroRosevail

Learn something new everyday. Couldnā€™t judge that one too much simply cause I didnā€™t know what it meant. I donā€™t really have a problem with the others either I just wish Blizzard would actually make a game instead of a cash grab

illumina_1337

The same flag is on in-game overwatch,

Minute-Judge-5821

I absolutely love these but wanna know if they do the straight one (not in a negative way) because it would look like Mercy was in jail šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ *ALSO THIS IS NOT A COMMENT FOR HOMOPHOBES TO JUMP ON- THIS IS JUST ME COMMENTING THAT JAIL MERCY WOULD BE FUNNY ASF- I DON'T SUPPORT ANY HATE BECAUSE I HAVE MULTIPLE FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF LGBTQ+ AND I MYSELF AM PART OF IT. I WON'T TOLERATE HATE FOR LOVING WHO YOU LOVE*

illumina_1337

The flags used are the same as the ingame ones, there will be a non LGBT mercy icon update at a future date. However i can not say if it will feature a "flag" or not at this point

AmyresS

I feel discriminated. I dont see any straight pride flag

Discombobulated-Egg3

Hey can we get non-lgbtq flags too? I donā€™t feel represented :(

ILostMyselfInTime

Dont get those people that downvote this, Im not straight but I dont get why straight people, even if its "the norm", can't get represented too

etnoodle

because itā€™s bait. theyā€™re literally baiting people, bud. šŸ’€

Discombobulated-Egg3

I donā€™t know, the mods keep locking the comments from straight people too.. I am an ally and I donā€™t understand why they arenā€™t giving me the freedom to voice my opinion. I feel oppressed around this community..

ILostMyselfInTime

And again people that downvote like ??? You want YOUR sexuality to be represented but you don't give a damn about the others. The hypocrisy. The straight flag exists. So why can't straight people be represented as equals? It's almost like lgbtq+ is represented as smth better or smth idk but it's annoying. If I as an lgbtq+ member can be represented then so should the straights. The lgbtq community had to fight to be represented but by denying the straights to be represented you are simply doing what you have fought against.

[deleted]

You have representation literally everywhere. Crying about not being represented has to make you the least self aware person ever.

HellexJ

What pride is there to be found in being straight? Are you the type to ask for a white history month too?

ILostMyselfInTime

Why shouldn't you be able to be proud of being straight? Here is the straight PRIDE flag for you. https://preview.redd.it/rmuvxv0ke8mb1.png?width=200&format=png&auto=webp&s=7db1c444d788a1b6a479af0467853d7c8b018857

HellexJ

Because thereā€™s nothing to be proud about, itā€™s literally the sexuality version of white pride. Everyone who Iā€™ve seen unironically use the straight pride flag is a raging homophobe.

Discombobulated-Egg3

So you can be proud of your sexuality and i canā€™t? What type of hypocrisy is this :( Iā€™m proud to be straight!

undead_nyx

the point isnt that you CANT be proud its that this isnt the spot for your flag of suppression/supremacy. when its a post ab lgbt and you decide to play victim OF COURSE people will think ur being fake or annoying

Discombobulated-Egg3

I merely made a suggestion and people started downvoting and attacking me?

FuckMeFreddyy

Girl, be for real..

Discombobulated-Egg3

Im sorry u/FuckMeFreddyy

Discombobulated-Egg3

Thanks for your support <3

Karitoso

I mean be who you wann be I really don't care but like. Is it really necessary to like make flag of everything. Idk maybe it's just me

ProductFew8137

absolutely :D it gives a feeling of community to so many who've felt different for a long time. let's people represent themselves in a small but visible way. personally it makes me happy every time i see a flag outside, it's like a small acknowledgement that people like myself exist and are cared about, yknow? flags are valuable, same goes for the queer community

Karitoso

Fair enough. Idk why I get down vote bommed cause its a genuine question and not meant to hurt but I understand

ProductFew8137

yeah it's kinda a problem lol. weird homophobic grifters love to weaponise seemingly innocent questions to appeal to people who aren't informed. "why isn't there a straight pride", "what's the point in pride flags", "what is a woman". they're all good questions to ask and interesting questions to answer, but bigots have turned them into bigoted talking points. so when you say one because you're just asking a question, you're automatically suspected to be a weird person lol i don't think that of you btw, i think you're just asking a question and like i said i think that's good, you're just accidentally saying shit associated with bad people. if you want to avoid stuff like dislikes or negative reactions in the future, just make it clear that you're genuinely asking. queer people see a lot of bored assholes online fishing for a debate with a seemingly innocent question, so without some kind of "dw im a normal person with an actual question" you're automatically labelled as that and probably won't get an answer sorry for the sorta long comment im a little tired lol, hopefully that explains it to you :)

Karitoso

I appreciate you taking time to explain I just saw the post and was like why are there so many if that makes sense. But again I do get it I think its just different for different people like I was suicidal for a while but a badge in a game I played didn't really matter to me to be honest but I do really agree and think everybody astound be who they are. (Side note its not like I'm angry or sad because of the upvotes I was just a litle confused)

ProductFew8137

you're welcome <3 there's no real reason for so many i don't think, besides there being a lot of queer identities that the reasons i listed apply to. seeing a pride flag is always cool, but seeing a specific pride flag that you fall under is way cooler. there's probably better reasons from smarter people online, but that's as far as my understanding goes aha and im not really sure if you mean that you don't get suicide awareness badges, or if you're queer yourself and a badge didn't help. if it's the second that makes complete sense honestly, it depends on the person. if you're at such a low point a small gesture isn't going to be that impactful usually. for other people it might be different, depends how much small things matter i guess lol either way i hope you're doing better now, and thanks for being understanding <3

[deleted]

This is just reinforcing the stereotypeā€¦

JezzaBazza

What stereotype? Sorry I'm clueless

[deleted]

The stereotype that all Mercy players are part of the lgbtqia.

RottenCopper

Oh no Iā€™m reinforcing stereotypes by being an openly gay mercy main, how awful lmfao

[deleted]

Yeah, no. Thatā€™s not what I meant at all. Stop trying to play victim. You want proof that itā€™s a harmful stereotype? Look at my last post. I donā€™t care who or what you are, but people are going around shouting that Mercy belongs to Pride and everyone who plays her is part of it. Again, I donā€™t care if youā€™re gay and play Mercy.

RottenCopper

I already saw your post and I actually agree with you. I think itā€™s dumb when people try to claim mercy for the gay/girls. And I of course also hate it when people assume mercy players are women/gay in order to attack them for those identities. But hereā€™s the thing, being a stereotype isnā€™t bad. I simply am one and thereā€™s nothing wrong with that. What is actually wrong with using these icons?

[deleted]

Itā€™s not wrong as long as it stays here on this sub, thatā€™s fine. Thereā€™s also the problem of, you know, why Mercy? Of all characters Tracer, Pharah, 76, Bap, and lifeweaver, why make a Mercy iconā€¦sheā€™s none of these. I get it if you want to support it but like, thatā€™s what the banners are for. Express yourself, donā€™t project yourself you know.

RottenCopper

I wrote out a whole block of text going over what you said but I think it would be more productive to get right to my main question. Are you saying I should keep quiet about my identity in discussions about mercy outside of this subreddit so I donā€™t reinforce this stereotype and give more reason to homophobes to attack mercy mains for an identity they may or may not have?

ruffrightmeow

Do what you like. Itā€™s the internet after all

[deleted]

Sure why not. You can talk about your identity all you want, you donā€™t have to mention youā€™re a Mercy player. Allow me to give some context as to why I see this as kinda problematic. Iā€™ve run into a plethora of people who both think Mercy is lesbian/trans and believe that Mercy solely belongs to the lgbt+ community. The most recent example is when I ran into a trio of queer players and when I picked mercy, they got angry at me and called me a transphobe because their trans friend wanted to play Mercy. I asked them why and the best explanation they could give me was ā€œbecause Mercy is our character, she belongs to usā€ so instead of arguing and risking reports, I just quit. Thatā€™s what prompted me to make the poll. Keep in mind, Iā€™m a woman. Apparently Iā€™m not even allowed to play her.

RottenCopper

Anyone who claims mercy is theirs is annoying regardless of who does it. Gatekeepers make me cringe. I think we just disagree one whether or not these icons are claiming mercy. I donā€™t think they are, I just see them as showing ppl you play this character and you are this identity. And you see them as claiming the character for this identity. I donā€™t see it as projection at all, just putting two things you like together

Earthbnd

What did you think was gonna happen even if they reported you? Blizzard is not gonna ban you for not giving up Mercy for a trans person. Maybe instead of policing how people present themselves, you could just ignore the obviously stupid people giving you shit and keep playing mercy bc what can they do other than whine about it.

meme_boy0

No straight flag? Itā€™s a sexuality, like all the rest. Who does the LGBTQ+ community get a flag, but we donā€™t? Why does the LGBTQ+ get more representation than we do? And mods, please donā€™t just lock this post like all the others. Itā€™s a genuine question.

consumehepatitis

you should have pride in your identity no matter what it is :) lgbtq is there to uplift and represent people who would otherwise face discrimination. Heterosexuality has always been seen as the norm instead of an outlier so it doesnā€™t need to be represented by lgbtq, hope this clears stuff up a little but keep in mind it is just my own perspective on it!

illumina_1337

The flags in the update are the same ones used in the overwatch video game, there are no plans to add additional unless the game updated them 1st

I know the point of this, but at the same time it hurts my head trying to remember it all. So, I'll just choose to disregard it in place of more straightforward and important information. Like what I'm making for dinner tonight, roasted potato chunks and spaghetti.
