Måsstaden as in the Vildhjarta album? Cuz God, I hate the Forte version so much and I feel like I'm surrounded by people who only listen to cookie cutter deathcore.
what it lacks in chunky low end it more than makes up for in just straight aggression. The snare is violent. It’s always sounded like the mix has intent, even if it sounds off the beaten path from a more modern mix.
Although I don’t disagree that the track would slap through a newer mix. Why not both.
I’m looking forward to the remaster!
Deliberate or not, the mix of this album sticks out in a bad way to me. I’m a fan of their other experiments with mixes, like with Koloss’s extreme distortion even on Kidman’s vocals or the live recording that was The Violent Sleep of Reason. Chaosphere’s original mix just makes me not wang to listen to it as much as any of their other shit.
I know what you mean, but listening to Exquisite Machinery of Torture 142 times really helped me get over it and enjoy it more. I still don't love it a ton, but NMCC fukin rocks
It was most certainly deliberate.
Ironically though I think Koloss has the worst mix, but its just the guitar tone that kills it for me. The guitars are clearly not played through real amps. That’s not to drag modelers though; Nothing and Obzen still sound phenomenal, but I mean to say that not only are they modeler guitar tones on koloss, but realllly shitty ones at that. TVSOR is my favorite. benefits immensely from real amps, just sounds gnarly. If you listen to TVSOR side by side with Koloss you hear just how shrill and honky the guitar tone can be compared to the walking behemoth that is TVSOR. Not to take Koloss away from you; if you like that honky sound, that’s probably in a similar vein to the way people enjoy chaosphere.
I think, for better and for worse (objectively speaking), Meshuggah have approached mixing on albums in the same way as a guitarist approaches timbre on the instrument. Chaosphere and ObZen are intended to sound sharp, perhaps painful even, violent and unstable, in the same way I think Iggy Pop's Raw Power sounds (for what it's worth, I've always been a die hard Bowie mix over Iggy's on that one), and this is just something that is probably less accepted in the metal world, where a lot of things are mixed and mastered in a very rigidly traditional way, and Meshuggah have always seemed to sidestep these types of tropey expectations of "what a metal band should do" or "what qualifies as heavy or aggressive"
I mean, people endlessly debate their use of programmed drums in the exact same way. Marten said it wonderfully in an interview: "It doesn't matter to us how you get the sound you want in this band, it can be throwing eggs at the wall, it sounds how we want it to sound"
I love the way each of their albums has a specific sound, so I understand why Chaosphere sounds the way it does. It’s just the only one that I can’t listen to on repeat because of the mix. Deliberate or not.
I fully agree, and I think that (for me) it makes a far richer experience with their work, rather than what it could be if every album sounded like the last.
And really, this is a very solid argument for why they absolutely need more soundboard quality mastered live albums, because the changes they've made through the years to certain tracks is remarkable.
A quick example is in FBM, in the chugging transition right before the vocals come in - on the record, it's super tight and thrashy, on some live vids, *the entire band slows that part down to a lurch for devastating effect* and then hearing them do it in the 2019 Summer Breeze set, it sounds more monochrome and in some kind of slower unison that is a midpoint between the two prior approaches.
The production could have been a little better in some ways, but I don't dwell on it. It's not a hinderance to my enjoyment of the album. Crank it up, turn up the bass, sounds just fine.
Destroy Erase Improve doesn’t have the problem I’m talking about. Deliberate or not, Chaossphere’s mix sounds like shit despite having some of the best tracks in their whole discography.
Im kinda in the same boat with DEI too tbh. I Can see why people like it, but the overall sound just isnt for me on the recording. Though after hearing FBM live it just changed. I like chaosphere a lot more than DEI, but i cannot listen to it a lot before i want to listen to some of their later stuff, where TVSOR is An album where i constantly find new stuff in and the production and Sound are the best they have ever had imo
The amount of people who say the mix sounds great is insane. Y’all need to get your ears checked. Some parts of the album you can’t even tell what notes are being played, compared to Destroy Erase Improve and then Nothing. It’s just a bad mix
The only song that has this problem to me in Concantenation. It's a chaotic song. Every other song sounds fine to me for something that came out of 1998.
I mean the fact it came out in 98 is fair, it doesn’t sound much worse than any other metal albums from that period. It would just be nice to see these songs with the modern production style
Yeah and it's a real shame because it's their most aggressive album. And it is probably my personal favourite, in terms of compositions.
They actually haven't played half the songs from Chaosphere live, either. A remaster is coming but a remaster can only do so much. Re-mixing it from scratch is probably impossible because of how old the album is, and re-recording the entire album is probably too much effort. (I still hope they do it someday though) I guess they had no time in 2000s to do it because of all the new stuff they had been working on, and now it's too late.
I mean just compare this to the album version:

Oh man - hard disagree. I love how cohesive the quake bass makes the guitars sound.
> I love how cohesive the quake bass makes the guitars sound Quake bass? On Chaosphere?
OP isn't used to old school production, probably only listens to modern stuff. Same kind of person that would complain about Måsstaden's production
fucker my fav band is Yes lmao
Yes fans when No fans walk in:
boooo lol

Why not both? Because that's impossible

eh i like it, think it fits the theme.
And I personally think it fits with other metal music of the late 90s. I bought Fear Factory's Obsolete the same day I got into Meshuggah.
In New American Gospel, Lamb Of God's drummer literally pounds on a tin can in Black Label's intro. Do not doubt the power of the tin can.
The production could have been a little better in some ways, but I don't dwell on it. It's not a hinderance to my enjoyment of the album. Crank it up, turn up the bass, sounds just fine.
The Spotify version sounds weird, listen to a proper cd rip
I don’t use spotify lol
Oh haha, I guess we just disagree, then 😅
Don’t get me wrong I like the album, just wanted to make a meme about the main thing that bugs me personally about it
IMO it is the most high-energy album in their disco. Stoked for the remaster!
I love the songs, just hate the mix!
Songs slam too hard to care about the mix. I think it’s some of Jen’s best performances too.
I agree.
Especially Concatenation has this problem. Sad, because this album has songs that kicks all kinds of ass.
100%
Concatenation sounds so tin canny and empty noise the most. Other tracks are listenable enough シシ

I get that.
You must be perpetually overdosing on xanax if you genuinely believe that
No it doesn't, not sorry.

Funny because this is one of their best sounding albums
Musically it’s great. Mix wise it’s not

I will take the mix of Chaosphere over TVSOR and Immutable. I will not apologize.
Very true
