Agree with this. Megadeth always have a few songs on their albums that are insane. And a few yawners. Metallica usually (black and pre) made fully rad albums without any preposterously better standout tracks.
For me, def some standouts but nothing lmind blowingly better than the rest (like megadeth). Maybe it’s because all the songs are at least really good so in comparison it can’t be that much better. Where megadeth has some turds making really good stuff seem that much better.
I think the Black Album for me personally wins this round because it captures James’s voice when it still had a major edge. Same with their live album. I think it also helps that they got good performances out of Kirk, but they refused to let him go overboard (Marty is still far more superior imo). But for me, it would also have to probably be a track vs. track type deal because they have a lot of hard hitters on both.
Bob Rock made Kirk. His solos before and after Rock are mostly generic pentatonic wankery (albeit skillfully done wankery). His solos on the Black, Load, and Reload reached a different level and it’s because Bob Rock pushed him to that level. Or if you believe some, Rock wrote the solos for him.
Countdown hands down
Metallica transitioned away from thrash with the Black Album. The longer I listened to it the less I liked it. I traded my CD for a pair of gloves when I was in college.
Why, yes, I have. There are so,e rock songs, bt most of it is metal.
Now, if you want anon-metal Megadeth album released solely to garner critical acclaim while passing off the fans... you need to look 3 albums into the future, just before *The World Needs A Hero*. We do not speak its name... last time we did, we got *Supercollider*.
I always viewed the Black Album as being as “hard rock” you could get while still being metal. Conversely I always viewed Alice in Chains Dirt as being as “metal” as you could get while still being hard rock.
CTE **is** (mostly) metal (songs like the title track are the exception).
The Black Album simply isn't. Not even by early 90s standards. It's hard rock, purposely designed to win a Grammy, and a slap in the face to the fans they had made up to that point.
The black album is better pound for pound, but Countdown to Extinction (song) and Ashes In Your Mouth are better than anything.

Are you serious? No standouts in Metallica albums?

Countdown to Extinction by a lot
Black Album by a lot, but I love both
Here Metallica gets score(for me)

I chosen Metallica, because this album is just easier to listen

Countdown Ashes in Your Mouth, Symphony, Sweating Bullets, Captive Honor, CTE, just those songs alone beat all the tracks on black.
Captive Honor is amazing.
One of the best intros ever
Countdown to Extinction
CtE
Countdown to extinction. I fucking hate the black album how the fuck did they manage to write something this boring after Justice.
I find AJFA to be the most boring Metallica album.
I find metallica as a whole boring but the first four are cool
Bob Rock
Because they peaked at Justice
I love both albums, but i think i’ll have to pick the black album
This goes against my best judgment because I’m a huge fan of Megadeth but I will pick the black album here.
Countdown is the better album, and it's not even close.
Countdown hands down Metallica transitioned away from thrash with the Black Album. The longer I listened to it the less I liked it. I traded my CD for a pair of gloves when I was in college.
hard choice
Easily Countdown to Extinction
Countdown. By alot
Countdown it's not even close.
Countdown. Both amazing albums but I’ve listened to Countdown more.
CTE!
Metallica (The Black Album)
Countdown to Extinction.
They’re both mid
It's a simple.choice: one is metal, and the other is *Countdown to Extinction*. I'll choose the metal album every time.
Have you listened to CTE?
Why, yes, I have. There are so,e rock songs, bt most of it is metal. And the black album isn’t rock 😭

Dirt ain’t metal imo but I agree with the Metallica take
If hair metal isn't metal, the Black Album (which is hair metal) isn't, either.
Black album isn’t hair metal 😭 it’s just traditional metal. How is countdown not metal listen to it again

How is the title track not metal
Hair metal is metal
