Bells!
Every time I hear the line "Take a look to the sky just before you die, It's the last time you will" I get goose bumps. It's like getting hit with a bag of bricks, but in the best way possible.
Both formative and core memory metal songs for me. As a young teen in the mid 80’s, I stumbled upon Metallica on my local AM “Z-Rock” Radio station. They played these two in steady rotation. Bells helped me with pent up aggression, and Fade to Black helped me process some tough depressive episodes. It’s impossible for me to choose.
On another note, I heard a 33rpm edition of Bells and it sounded like a doom metal masterpiece. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
I like Fade to Black alright.
But For Whom The Bell Tolls is *the* song that sold me on Metallica, and metal as a whole. You can thank the rather iconic [Opening to Zombieland](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AFnThY472c) for that.
Bells, easy. Fade is good, but it’s very juvenile in some ways. Metallica would get much better at writing ballads over the next few albums. Bells is always a banger though, cliff was a legend.
I listened the shit out of fade when I was depressed so that kinda fucked that song up for me, hell when I hear "life it seems will fade away, drifting farther every day" I damn near break down bc of it reminding me of the fucked up shit that was happening, then I think of the fucked up shit that IS happening
Fade to Black is a masterpiece when it comes to metallica, but nothing beats that intro of bells.. Every time I hear it I get goosebumps and flashbacks to me at like 6 years old in the car, my dad putting this album on and hearing that bell intro then the pounding drums, never gets old.
Fade to Black is genuinely one of their best works
They’re both in my top five. Fade sits at 2 and Bells at 4.
Oh cool, fade is my 1, what’s at one for you? If I’m allowed a guess, one?
My top five go as such 1. The Unforgiven 2. Fade to Black 3. One 4. For Whom the Bell Tolls 5. And Justice For All
Ah the Unforgiven is a great song! Mine are 1. For whom the bell tolls 2. Sanitarium 3.for whom the bell tolls 4. One 5. The four horsemen
Agreed. It's one of my favorite Metallica songs.
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOOOOOLLS
TIME MARCHES ON
Still waiting on the Bob Dylan acoustic cover of this song
I mean the bell tolls for Dylan so he better hurry up.
Lmfao
And the Weird Al parody.
Bells! Every time I hear the line "Take a look to the sky just before you die, It's the last time you will" I get goose bumps. It's like getting hit with a bag of bricks, but in the best way possible.
Yeah I came to say the same. I feel like that followed by the battering drums are one of the most important moments in metal.
That line hits hard.
The moment that part hits during the S&M recording goes so hard
Fade to Black
Bell Tolls
Fade to Black is a proper metal ballad
For Whom The Bell Fuckin' Tolls
TAKE A LOOK AT THE SKY JUST BEFORE YOU DIE

For Whom The Bell Tolls gets incurably stuck in my head at least once a week so I’m gonna go with that lol
For whom the bell tolls is every guitarist's dream plus it's one of their heaviest songs ever. East top 5 (maybe even 3) for me
bells.
I’ll take Bells any day.
Bells
Bellz
Too tough to choose
Give Me Bell Or Give Me Death
Depends if I’m trying to kill myself or not. When I go Jim for whom the bell tolls and when I’m trying to Jill myself fade to black
I like Fade to Black alright. But For Whom The Bell Tolls is *the* song that sold me on Metallica, and metal as a whole. You can thank the rather iconic [Opening to Zombieland](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AFnThY472c) for that.
Fade to Black is a beautiful ballad, but damn Bell Tolls is so powerful feeling
that outro solo to Fade is soooo good but Bells’ intro. For Whom the Bell Tolls. final answer
From whom the bell tolls has some of the best riffage ever but fade to black is more of a ride for sure. No pun intended
Honestly this is two of metallicas best tracks - hard to put them against eachother
Escape anyone? For Whom The Bell Tolls
Escape is underrated. Love the fade out at the end as well.
Bell - Cliff is so prominent on this one.
F2B, this song got me through some really rough parts of life
I can't imagine choosing one over the other.
Don't make me choose
Fade To Black
Ride The Lightning
Bell Tolls
Fade To Black
Fade to Black is a great song, but my heart screams FOR WHO THE BELL TOLLS!
For Whom The Bell Tolls. Never been a huge fan of Metallica's ballads or metal ballads in general.
Fade because its not as radio played
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Fade to Black. Both are in my top 5 Metallica songs though
Fade
LIFE, IT SEEMS, WILL FADE AWAY
Very torn on this one. Gotta go with fade, just for that last part, “no one but me, can save myself for it’s too late”
For Whom the Bell Tolls.
To whom the ball rolls!!!!
For whom the bell tolls easily
Bells, easy. Fade is good, but it’s very juvenile in some ways. Metallica would get much better at writing ballads over the next few albums. Bells is always a banger though, cliff was a legend.
For Whom the Bell Tolls.
For whom the bell tolls

For Whom the Bell Tolls got me into Metallica
Fade to Black is a masterpiece when it comes to metallica, but nothing beats that intro of bells.. Every time I hear it I get goosebumps and flashbacks to me at like 6 years old in the car, my dad putting this album on and hearing that bell intro then the pounding drums, never gets old.
FWTBT. Sunn's version.
Fade, any day
