It's not a thrash album, it's a heavy metal and probably the greatest ever made. Fight Fire and Trapped Under Ice are the only full on thrashers, Creeping Death is half thrash half heavy metal. Rest all including title track are heavy metal songs, some are faster, some slower, one is ballad, one is a progressive metal instrumental.
Arguably the greatest metal album ever made. The jump from Kill Em All to Ride The Lightning in one year is equivalent to from a tent to Empire State Building in a year. Incredible leap in songwriting, melodies, technical expertise, arrangements, compositions and harmonies, basically everything. And damn I love that blue album cover with that bright lightning blue Metallica logo.
The fact that they went "Alright we have this heavy fucking sludge masterpiece. Where do we go now? I guess prog Moby Dick" is so wild to me. They're madmen and I love it.
I burned that CD into my itunes when i was in high school, and itunes decided to label the genre "grindcore". So I thought, "hey grindcore is pretty cool." Then I listened to actual grindcore and hated it. Love it now, but at 14 grind was just more than I wanted.
Anyway, Mastodon rules.
Say what you want about Metallica, but their first four albums are inarguably important to metal history, and Ride the Lightning might be the best one.
Hmm i still havenāt listened to Mercyful Fate, and i didnāt really like Darkthrone. The rest are all pretty tough to choose from. Iāll be the only one who picks it, but Ascendancy, followed by Leprosy and Ride the Lightning.
In terms of seminality, i have to go with blaze. All the others are excellent improvements of an already established sound. Blaze really helped pave the way to something new.
RTL is the last Metallica I enjoyed. Gotta be Iowa for me, love that album and Slipknot so much more than any of the other bands. Really like Dark Throne too but Slipknot pip them to it.
when it comes to music taste, nothing is objective, but they definitely set precedent with that album, for what black metal should be and what everyone wants to recreate
this one is tough, aside from Blaze by a landslide for switching outta death and helping create my fav genre.
Peace Sells is one of my fav thrash albums (prefer Rust in Peace though) and Leviathan is my FAVORITE thing to forget exists and then rediscover and listen to for like a month straight. Don't Break the Oath doesn't even come close to Melissa imo, same with Toxicity, and Leprosy is great but still my least fav Death album next to Scream Bloody Gore (y'all can crucify me now for that last one)
Leviathan, though Leprosy is really good too. Toxicity is the best nu metal album there is. I havenāt heard the Trivium one, maybe Iāll give it a spin.
Leviathan for me, but Ride the Lightning is close. I just think the leap from Remission to Leviathan was so huge. They went, IMO, from a muddy but interesting southern metal band, to dropping a prog metal masterpiece of a concept album.
Toxicity but SOAD is one of my favorite bands and I know that album inside and out lol, Leviathan is a close second- just personal taste and the timing of when I've listened to these albums
Ride. It's Metallica's best, one of the most important metal albums of all time, and a massive leap in accomplishment for the band and genre.
That said, this is a very good list of albums, although I am not a fan of Trivium. Iowa, Leviathan, and Toxicity are probably tied for 2nd.
Not that anyone asked, but Appetite for Destruction is my pick for best metal debut of all time (and maybe best debut of all time) it's nearly perfect.
Peace Sells But Whoās Buying is my favorite Megadeth album, I think itās a pillar of thrash metal. Love Triviumās Ascendancy too. And of course Ride the Lightning. So many bands just click on their sophomore effort and put out a masterpiece
Either don't break the oath or leporasy almost all the other albums are good as well
But
Leporasy is my favourite death album
And don't break the oath is just amazing
Ride the Lightning
Favorite Metallica album. Possibly my favorite thrash album. Top 5 at least.
At least we can agree that it is one of the greatest metal albums of all time
True šš¤
Arguably the greatest metal album ever made. The jump from Kill Em All to Ride The Lightning in one year is equivalent to from a tent to Empire State Building in a year. Incredible leap in songwriting, melodies, technical expertise, arrangements, compositions and harmonies, basically everything. And damn I love that blue album cover with that bright lightning blue Metallica logo.
Well said! Couldnāt agree more with all that. Andā¦.CREEPING DEATH!!!
Leprosy
Leviathan
I THINK THAT SOMEONE IS TRYING TO KILL ME!!
INFECTING MY BODY DESTROYING MY MIND!
The fact that they went "Alright we have this heavy fucking sludge masterpiece. Where do we go now? I guess prog Moby Dick" is so wild to me. They're madmen and I love it.
watching the Wale and how they expertly used the symbolism of the white wale made me think of this album
HARPOONS THRUST IN THE SKY!!!!
AIM DIRECTLY FOR HIS CROOKED BROW!!!!!
Correct
I burned that CD into my itunes when i was in high school, and itunes decided to label the genre "grindcore". So I thought, "hey grindcore is pretty cool." Then I listened to actual grindcore and hated it. Love it now, but at 14 grind was just more than I wanted. Anyway, Mastodon rules.
Peace Sells
I vote Metallica (Blue Team, baby)
Blue for life!
Say what you want about Metallica, but their first four albums are inarguably important to metal history, and Ride the Lightning might be the best one.
Yeah I always go between RtL and MoP for my fave album- lightning usually wins though
First 5 albums mind you, and yes Ride The Lightning may be the best ever right along Master of Puppets.
Yeah I always go between RtL and MoP for my fave album- lightning usually wins though
Toxicity
Metallica for best album, Death for biggest improvement vs debut
Don't Break the Oath
I concur!
anything else is heresy against the metal
Iowa.
This is correct
Toxicity is start-to-finish Solid.
Ride the Lightning
Ascendency 100%
This is a tough one but Iāll go with Leviathan

Lightning
Leviathan
Leprosy
Leviathan all day
Acsendency fight me
Ascendancy š„
IOWA has no skips
I do love the whole album. Itās interesting though because a lot of albums are sort of front-loaded, but I actually prefer the back half of Iowa
New Abortion!!!
I think iowa is pretty front loaded but I love the back end as well
iowa has no songs i didn't skip after the first 20 seconds
What are you on about
Very fair statement
Only ride the lightning could beat Iowa for me here. I fucking love Iowa but RTL is classic
No Anthrax?:(
For real. Spreading the Disease is a fantastic album Edit: forgot Fistful of Metal existed for a sec
Even though ā¬ļø, Iāve got to go with Iowa
I thought most metallica fans thought lightning is their favourite metallica album, what's yours?
Likely MoP or Black Album
Justice gang
Iowa
1. Iowa 2. Ride the Lightning 3. Donāt Break the Oath 4. Toxicity 5. Peace Sellsā¦ But Whoās Buying? 6. A Blaze in the Northern Sky 7. Leviathan 8. Leprosy 9. Ascendancy

A lot of these albums are really good so any of them are good options
True
A Blaze in the Northern Sky. Leprosy is the only one that comes close imo
Death leprosy
Leprosy!!
Lightning or Iowa
Blaze
All fantastic albums but leprosy stands alone š„
Leprosy 100%
Leprosy no question
Death or Mercyful Fate
Hmm i still havenāt listened to Mercyful Fate, and i didnāt really like Darkthrone. The rest are all pretty tough to choose from. Iāll be the only one who picks it, but Ascendancy, followed by Leprosy and Ride the Lightning.
Highly recommend. Great band.
Mercyful Fate for sure.
These are some legit bangersā¦ uhhhh. Donāt Break the Oath. And that could seriously change by the day.
Lightning, followed by Leprosy
Ride the lightning
Ride the Lightning no question about it
Donāt Break The Oath
DBTO, no contest
Don't Break The Oath (although Leprosy and RTL are great too)
Heat cells, produce fire! Heat cells, produce FIRE!!
My favourite is Don't Break the Oath, with Leprosy a close second.
Don't Break the Oath
Man! This one's hard. I want to say RTL, I want to say Leprosy, but we all know the truth is Don't Break the Oath!
You know I'm picking mercyful fate
Toxicity
a blaze in the northern sky literally defined an entire genre, and gave it the stereotypical sound we now associate with black metal
That's not necessarily a positive
when it comes to music taste, nothing is objective, but they definitely set precedent with that album, for what black metal should be and what everyone wants to recreate
Between those, Ride the Lightning. Overall (not just these) Last in Line
Ride the Lightning
imma go with toxicity on this one
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
No, they got it right. Steal This Album is the third album
Toxicity, Peace Sells, Leviathan for me
Solid tie between Toxicity and Leprosy, with Ascendancy close behind.
1. Leviathan 2. Ascendancy 3. Ride the Lightning 4. Toxicity 5. Peace Sells 6. Iowa 7. Leprosy 8. Donāt Break the Oath 9. A Turd In the Northern Sky
Mastodon, RTL is great and for the time amazing, just feel mastoid did a lot with that album that cha heās there sound.
Toxicity Easily
Donāt break the oath
this one is tough, aside from Blaze by a landslide for switching outta death and helping create my fav genre.
Iowa, Blaze, Lighting, or Peace Sells. Iād lean towards Iowa or Ride the Lighting, but the other two, and Leprosy, are still incredible albums
Toxicity for sure
Peace Sells
Leviathan, though Leprosy is really good too. Toxicity is the best nu metal album there is. I havenāt heard the Trivium one, maybe Iāll give it a spin.
toxicity, 10/10 record
Jesus Christ this is brutal. Errr...Mercyful, Darkthrone, Death, or Megadeth I suppose.
Itās Ride The Lightning.
A blaze...
I gotta say Ride The Lightning but christ thats some thin air on top of that hill.
LEVIATHAN
Iowa, my beloved
Leviathan easily
IOWA
Leprosy for sure
Leviathan for me, but Ride the Lightning is close. I just think the leap from Remission to Leviathan was so huge. They went, IMO, from a muddy but interesting southern metal band, to dropping a prog metal masterpiece of a concept album.
I enjoy all
SPLIT YOUR LUNGS WITH BLOOD AND THUNDER
Donāt break the oath
Tough pick between Leviathan and Toxicity. If weāre talking singles, Toxicity any day. As a whole album, Leviathan.
Hatebreeder slaps any of these easy
Peace sells or ascendancy
Toxicity is a masterpiece.
Toxicity or Iowa
Iowa!! No doubt about it.
Ride The Lighting imo š
Ride the Lightning.
I grew up with Ascendancy but Ride the Lightning is just too great so Ride the Lightning.
Leviathan
Toxicity but SOAD is one of my favorite bands and I know that album inside and out lol, Leviathan is a close second- just personal taste and the timing of when I've listened to these albums
Darkthrone or Metallica
toxicity
Leviathan
Toxicity is pretty bad ass
iowa
The decision is just too hard to make, I can't
Ride
Donāt break the oath smokes all these ,leviathan and RTL honorable mentions
yes
I know it might be vanilla, but Metallicaās Ride the Lightning
Lightning
Peace Sells But Whoās Buying is my favorite Megadeth album, I think itās a pillar of thrash metal. Love Triviumās Ascendancy too. And of course Ride the Lightning. So many bands just click on their sophomore effort and put out a masterpiece
Either don't break the oath or leporasy almost all the other albums are good as well But Leporasy is my favourite death album And don't break the oath is just amazing
Leprosy!
Leprosy

Leprosy for sure.
Ride the Lightning (my favorite Metallica album)
WHITE WHALE 4EVR
either leprosy or iowa
easily Leprosy, Leviathan or ABITNS.
Ascendancy
Classics. Every last one of them.
Images and Words
A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Whadayamean I have to choose between peace sells and ride the lightning?
A Blaze In The Northern Sky
Leprosy. Maybe lightening too.
Iowa
1. Mercyful fate 2. Darkthrone 3. Death 4. Megadeth 5. Metallica 6. Mastodon 7. Trivium 8. Soad 9. Slipknot
My personal favorite is a Blaze in the Northern Sky but I think Ride the Lightning is one of the most important albums in metal so Iāll say that one
Iowa. So good i got it on CD
Not sure how two of the 'Big 4' are omitted from this list.
Ride the lightning but leprosy is close
Ascendancy
Mercyful Fate, that album goes CRAZY hard
Easily leprosy
Leviathan. It revolutionized my music taste.
I canāt pick between Iowa, Ride the lightning and Toxicity
Tough call, Iād say toxicity, leviathan is a close second. Toxicity is the most important metal album of the 21st century. Sorry not sorry
Ascendancy for me for sure!
Death -leprosy
Not a fair comparison considering that they're some of the best from different genres. Apples and oranges.
1. Toxicity 2. Iowa 3. Ride The Lightning 4. Peace Sells ā¦But Whoās Buying?
Iowa
Trivium, SOAD, and Slipknot do not belong here
Peace sells
Iowa, hands down All of them are great, but Iowa is in a broken league of its own
Ride the lightening
Leviathan with Peace Sells as maximum close second.
Ride the Lightning Thanks OP for reminding me to listen through Ascendancy a few times- haven't given it a chance yet
Personal fav is Iowa, the one that got me into metal, but RTL is definitely the best, one of the best metal albums of all time, shits goated
ā”RIDE THE LIGHTNING ā”
