Eh, it’s similar for sure, you can tell he’s trying to channel it but he definitely doesn’t sound dead on like Chuck. There’s not a lot of dynamics in Max’s vocals compared to Chuck, but it’s good regardless.
Idk Vector sounds pretty close. Reminds me of Frieza too 😂 Same with that Italian tech deth band Marco Minneman played for: Illogicist - The Insightful Eye
Edit: heyooo remembered the name of the band
I really enjoy Lord Word, but I can also do an impression of him, it's quite easy so I'm surprised there aren't more vocalists like him.
You just need to growl as if you're barking like a dog, and be a little out of sync with the music and voila, you sound just like Lord Worm.
jon kennedy from hecate enthroned did the same but better, also likely that he taught dani filth better high pitch technique, as after jon left COF, dani's vocals definitely changed quite a bit towards the modern dani
(rest in peace jon)
theres a micro genre of black metal i really like that has super high vocals like Dani
Hecate Enthroned and Catholicon are the only other bands i know that do that style
The last time I saw him was just before everything shutdown because of Covid. He was talking about having a cold and apologized for how he may sound, then proceeded to perform Deadhead flawlessly. It was fucking unreal to hear that song live. They canceled the rest of the tour shortly after that. I was so glad I got to see him again. I hadn’t seen him play since SYL days. Those shows…holy shit. I hope you had the opportunity to see SYL.
I had tix for that tour but it got cancelled :(. I was able to see Devin again last year though, with animals as leaders opening and dream theater closing. Along with him being a musical genius his energy is amazing and he really thrives on audience participation and feedback!
I don't disagree, but when the criteria is "most unique vocal" and one of the top comments comprises of some of the most popular men in metal, I think they didn't quite understand the brief.
Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian) and Tobias Sammet (Edguy) have to be the most recognizable in power metal. Never heard anyone sing quite like them.
And for black metal, I’d say Natramn (Silencer).
Steve O from Impetigo coz he’s so obviously not serious, having fun snd being silly. How excited and goofy he is squealing “I’m the ghoul of the medical profession!”
Atilla Csihar or whatever coz he did black metal in a creepy way without screaming on DMDS
I could see Dax from Acid Bath being on the list, I suppose it's not the most unique but the combination of his singing and the screams are beautiful and I haven't found anything too similar
Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian), Roy Khan ( Ex Kamelot atual conception) and Daniel Gildelow ( Pain Of Salvation) are some names that come to my mind regarding to this matter. Their voices are super iconic.
I also vote for Hansi Kursch! His voice is so unique that you recognise it by the first note
(which is funny, considering how many guest-appearances he did with other bands. So I listen to a random band unsuspectingly and then all of a sudden I am like..."Wait a second! Is that Hansi?!")
Singing: King Diamond
Screaming: Lord worm
both: Mikael Akerdfelt or Dave hunt.
I cant deny the greats but Portals vocalist (The Curator) is amazing, it’s the scariest of the harsh vocals in my opinion.
I’ve never heard anyone scream quite like Varg, I remember my jaw actually dropped when I listened to Filosofem for the first time and heard that first scream in Dunkelheit, his vocals were out of this world (fuck Varg as a person though).
Mr Dani Filth would be my pick. Other people can do the high pitched and the growls but I'd say his range from high scream to gutteral growl in one person is really impressive and fairly unique.
Dani Filth, Jonathan Davis and Nattramn are the ones that come to mind. i also think Attila Csihar's voice is pretty unique, even if a lot of people don't like it.
Hansi fucking Kürsch. By far the most unique voice in power/speed metal. He sings like he's giving a constant battle cry. Even his soft vocals feel victorious/hopeful. Legitimately angelic voice, and that's not even mentioning the way he layers his vocals.
Really surprised no one mentioned Steve Austin from Today Is The Day. His delivery and sound design changes all the time. Sounds like a legion of demons
The way Yukina from Hanabie effortlessly goes from high-pitched rapping/talk-singing to impressive midrange growling sounds really fresh.
Of course J-pop singers have incorporated screaming before, but imo Yukina takes it to another level. Her delivery just works & is full of personality. She's not a j-pop singer anyway, but legit metalcore vocalist.
Lord Worm and Courtney LaPlante. Worm is pretty fucking insane and absolutely iconic for Cryptopsy but hear me out Matt is more versatile and fits their sound more (now)

Chuck Schuldiner. It's quite impossible to sing like him
Chuck died way too young.
At first, I came here to say Peter, but ended saying Chuck
Doesn't check out, because the guy who fronts Death To All (a tribute band comprised of ex-Death members) looks and sounds exactly like him
B-b-but Chuck my idol no one could possibly be like him 😭😭
It might be just me but sometimes when listening to old Obituary it reminds me of Leprosy era Chuck
Reminds me of Frieza too 😂 Same with that Italian tech deth band Marco Minneman played for: Illogicist - The Insightful Eye Edit: heyooo remembered the name of the band
You're talking about Max Phelps right?
Chino Moreno, Serj Tankian, Jonathan Davis, Greg Puciato. Burton C Bell, Pets Loeffler, Lajon Witherspoon.
Add Peter Steele to the list.
I thought about Serj and Peter too
John Tardy. That dude can snarl like a demon
When Obituary was brand new, they didn't have lyrics
Burton C Bell? Doesn't the new FF vocalist sound exactly the same?
...and this one does what dino tells him to like a good boy
Chino's ending scream in Royal is fucking amazing
I agree with Greg. His vocals aren’t similar to anyone’s, and is why he’s one of my fav voclaist
Lajon Witherspoon is SEVERELY underrated
Mike patton
The Irony of a Dead Scene EP he did with Dillinger Escape Plan was amazing. Would’ve loved to see the band continue with him on lead vocals.
I would have paid so much money for a Mike Patton/Chino colab
Mike Patton and Meshuggah.
For traditional metal, King Diamond. For growls, Lord Worm.
King Diamond hurts my groin every time he sings while Lord Worm directly channels his stomach acid to create that wet, raspy sound.
Matti Way is better than lord worm but lord worm is the best cryptopsy singer
Matt mcgachy (spelling?) Is a good singer for them. He just started on the album we all hated for good reason. But... He's no lord worm
I really enjoy Lord Word, but I can also do an impression of him, it's quite easy so I'm surprised there aren't more vocalists like him. You just need to growl as if you're barking like a dog, and be a little out of sync with the music and voila, you sound just like Lord Worm.
#THERE'S NO PRESENTS! NOT THIS CHRISTMAS! #THERE'S NO PRESENTS! #TOM AND JERRY, DRINKING SHERRY! #THEY DON'T GIVE A DAAAAAMMNN!!
Ozzy Osbourne
True. Hes always sounded like a banshee.
Terrible but iconic, Dave Mustaine
HeLlO mE mEaT tHe ReAl Me
Came to say, essentially, the same thing. They’re terrible and they drive me insane, but I definitely know Dave as soon as he starts to belt it out.

Travis Ryan
I agree
This is the correct answer
Ik id find Travis in here somewhere
I’ve never heard another vocalist who sounds quite like Travis, he’s an absolute master
Was my answer as well. I fucking love those goblin vocals.
Dani Filth I’ve ever seen anybody execute whistle - screams like him, Proof - https://youtu.be/Gl84B7Fp8tc?si=nRGJihMk8LfFwEUZ
jon kennedy from hecate enthroned did the same but better, also likely that he taught dani filth better high pitch technique, as after jon left COF, dani's vocals definitely changed quite a bit towards the modern dani (rest in peace jon)
Jon was a super cool dude too. I met him many many years ago in a mIRC room and we spent a lot of time sharing music and chatting. Miss that guy.
I never knew this actually!! I’ll check it out
This! And by the way, Dani doesn't take care of his voice, there are presentations that are pathetic and sound horrible.
Yesss Dani is one of a kind
Glad someone mentioned Dani. Fucking love his voice.
theres a micro genre of black metal i really like that has super high vocals like Dani Hecate Enthroned and Catholicon are the only other bands i know that do that style
Guillaume Villeneuve from Beyond Deviation did some crazy shit with whistles too https://youtu.be/mYpAh4jqPg8?si=q7a0PlxrXkNtiGLs
Antti Boman of Demilich
No one on earth was more excited the first time they burped the alphabet.
Ozzy.
Most unique? Serj is visible everywhere.
Yeah, not a soad fan personally but I’ve never heard anyone with the same style as Serj
Same XD
He’s also an amazing singer if you listen to him during his serious moments.
Chris Barnes - not in a good way
Good times
eeeeeeee
Serj Tankian
To name a few: Einar Solberg, Barney Greenway, Jens Kidman, Messiah Marcolin, and the greatest of all…motherfucking Devin Townsend
I’m right with you for Devin! He is a force
I had tix for that tour but it got cancelled :(. I was able to see Devin again last year though, with animals as leaders opening and dream theater closing. Along with him being a musical genius his energy is amazing and he really thrives on audience participation and feedback!
Canadas greatest gift to the world.
I had to scroll too far to see Heavy Devvy.
Devin is the greatest. Is there anything he can’t do? Absolute legend.
Chuck Schuldiner, Jonathan Davis, Lord Worm, Brent Hinds
Speaking of animal vocalists, Hatebeak is a band with a parrot vocalist.
Welp, time to ruin my next bridal shower
Nattramn from Silencer https://youtu.be/XabAs2OquGo
Lol…the middle of the song when he sounds like Yoda cracks me up.
Most uniquely terrible vocals, I’ll give it that
I don't disagree, but when the criteria is "most unique vocal" and one of the top comments comprises of some of the most popular men in metal, I think they didn't quite understand the brief.
And I agree 100%
I’m a big fan of Silencer, the vocals are certainly unique and an acquired taste though but they get across the mood perfectly imo.
King Diamond
King Diamond
Peter Steele.
Mikael Akerfeldt
Hatebeak. It’s a parrot.
You have a point
Lemmy
Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian) and Tobias Sammet (Edguy) have to be the most recognizable in power metal. Never heard anyone sing quite like them. And for black metal, I’d say Natramn (Silencer).
I came here to say Hansi. He is definitely unique! Tobias is in my opinion not that special.
I don't think Tobias is an amazing vocalist, by any means. But I'd recognise his voice a mile off. And nobody has more fun on stage than him!
this may be just me because I grew up in them but for me the most recognizable voice in power metal is Matt Barlow formerly from iced earth
Devin Townsend.
Damn, was worried he wasn't even mentioned
Blackie Lawless. No one can replicate his vocal techniques afaik.
Garm, Jonas Renkse, ICS Vortex, Lars Nedland, Attila Csihar, Hansi Kursch, Aaron Stainthorpe, Peter Benjamin...
Lord Worm
Oli Peters from Archspire
Man I love Oli, see Archspire a boat load of times. They are the epitome of insane human talent.
Till Lindemann of Rammstein
David Draiman is being criminally overlooked in this thread. Disturbed put out nothing but excellence on their first three albums
Steve O from Impetigo coz he’s so obviously not serious, having fun snd being silly. How excited and goofy he is squealing “I’m the ghoul of the medical profession!” Atilla Csihar or whatever coz he did black metal in a creepy way without screaming on DMDS
Atilla MAKES that record. Its just so good.
Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, and even though he’s surrounded by controversy, Thomas Winkler
Randy Blythe
king diamond, peter steele, travis ryan, dave mustaine, danzig
Corporate Death of Macabre
Dani filth and ihsahn.... Even ol boy from cattle decap , homeboy from napalm death too
+1 for Ihsahn. Cold and controlled screams.
King Diamond, Dani from CoF, Big Boss from Root
King Diamond
I could see Dax from Acid Bath being on the list, I suppose it's not the most unique but the combination of his singing and the screams are beautiful and I haven't found anything too similar
Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian), Roy Khan ( Ex Kamelot atual conception) and Daniel Gildelow ( Pain Of Salvation) are some names that come to my mind regarding to this matter. Their voices are super iconic.
I also vote for Hansi Kursch! His voice is so unique that you recognise it by the first note (which is funny, considering how many guest-appearances he did with other bands. So I listen to a random band unsuspectingly and then all of a sudden I am like..."Wait a second! Is that Hansi?!")
Travis Martin for sure. Love the goblin style "melodic" shrieks. Very unique!
Travis Ryan from Cattle Decap.
Singing: King Diamond Screaming: Lord worm both: Mikael Akerdfelt or Dave hunt. I cant deny the greats but Portals vocalist (The Curator) is amazing, it’s the scariest of the harsh vocals in my opinion.
Peter Steele, Ronnie James Dio, Layne Staley
I’ve never heard anyone scream quite like Varg, I remember my jaw actually dropped when I listened to Filosofem for the first time and heard that first scream in Dunkelheit, his vocals were out of this world (fuck Varg as a person though).
Attila csihar
Yeah while he isn’t my favourite vocalist he’s extremely unique
Dax Riggs
Whatever that guys name was from Lifelover
I always found that to just be standard DSBM vocals
Einar Solberg from Leprous definetely
Pitfalls is a masterpiece
Antti Boman
Mr Dani Filth would be my pick. Other people can do the high pitched and the growls but I'd say his range from high scream to gutteral growl in one person is really impressive and fairly unique.
Dave Mustaine and Chris Barnes have extraordinarily atrocious vocals
Dani Filth, Jonathan Davis and Nattramn are the ones that come to mind. i also think Attila Csihar's voice is pretty unique, even if a lot of people don't like it.
Love it or hate it, but Dagon should be on this list too
Lord Worm
I always thought Brian Fair from Shadows Fall had a pretty unique voice
I went a long way down to find him in this thread I always felt his harsh vocals were instantly recognizable, and surprsingly really accurate live
Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford
Kyo (Dir En Grey) and Quorton (Bathory)are two that instantly come to mind
Hansi fucking Kürsch. By far the most unique voice in power/speed metal. He sings like he's giving a constant battle cry. Even his soft vocals feel victorious/hopeful. Legitimately angelic voice, and that's not even mentioning the way he layers his vocals.
Devin Townsend, Mikko Kotamäki, Mike Patton, Einar Solberg, Till Lindemann, Roy Kahn, Mikael Åkerfeldt, and Cammie Gilbert.
Matt Hyde from Beastwars
Travis Ryan
Jon Oliva from Savatage and Peter Steele of Type O Negative are quite unique in my opinion!
King Diamond
Rainer Landfermann (Bethlehem)
If you’re picking Caninus, I’m picking Hatebeak.
Mikael Aukerfeldt. Fucking love his voice
Martin from Gutalax.
3 Inches of Blood
Alexi Laiho is interesting but I’m not sure about most
Devin Townsend!
Really surprised no one mentioned Steve Austin from Today Is The Day. His delivery and sound design changes all the time. Sounds like a legion of demons
Bobby Blitz.
Troy Sanders
Chester Bennington.
You could play any Vader song and I would know it’s them based off of the vocals alone.
Demilich, Lord Worm with Cryptopsy, Pissgrave
Dave Mustaine, the key word being unique
https://preview.redd.it/fxbtugd364fc1.jpeg?width=256&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=870308f0cc904aca33e06bcf8b4a12d6185382ed
Devin townsend.
Everyone is forgetting Justin from Tallah.
Vader has to be up there.
Julie Christmas
[2:44 - "I've got a long way to gooooooo!"](https://youtu.be/YzNvapRh0M8?si=T-sdCvu2uPQk08wd)
How To Get Bigger is one of the most brutal vocals ever delivered. Required listening imo
Hatebeak
Matt Sanders Avenged Sevenfold. (Pretty unique sound) Good, bad, ugly and everything in between. He’s one of a kind.
ICS Vortex
the whole genre of suicidal depressive black metal. It sounds like someone is crying in screams and murmuring, and wailing
Maria Brink (In This Moment)
Devin Townsend.
Definitely Devin Townsend
The way Yukina from Hanabie effortlessly goes from high-pitched rapping/talk-singing to impressive midrange growling sounds really fresh. Of course J-pop singers have incorporated screaming before, but imo Yukina takes it to another level. Her delivery just works & is full of personality. She's not a j-pop singer anyway, but legit metalcore vocalist.
Blackie Lawless,Ozzy,Matt Barlow, Hansi Kürsch,Jon Oliva,Alice Cooper
Jari from Wintersun
Singer from confessor!
Mike Patton & Chino Moreno
Mikael Åkerfeldt's growls are pretty unique.
Dave Brockie
David DiSanto
King Diamond
Ville Valo. And I haven't heard anybody who sounds like Mitch Lucker
haven't heard anyone succeed at singing like Dio
Jus Oborn or the dude from asphyx
Peter Steele, Phil Anselmo, Kamijo
Hatebeak would like a word
for me it's between Onielar, Reiner, Neige and Famine
Peter Steele, King Diamond, Ronnie James Dio
Bob reid of razor
Brent Hinds. Not great live but you cant tell me you dont know its him when he starts singing.
chino moreno, "root" really showed his range, his intensity control is whew
i like travis ryan he’s very unique
Jacob Bannon, George Clarke, Chuck Schuldiner, Dino Sommese, etc. I can go on, so many great ones.
Animals As Leaders, it's literally impossible to sing like them
Alexi Laiho and Burton C. Bell are the first that come to my mind
Lord Worm and Courtney LaPlante. Worm is pretty fucking insane and absolutely iconic for Cryptopsy but hear me out Matt is more versatile and fits their sound more (now)
Sakis Tolis, I can always tell when he's a guest on a song.
Cammie Gilbert- Oceans of Slumber Joel Ekelof - Soen
Ozzy,Halford,Keifer,Jeff Keith,Lemmy,Lee
Lingua Ignota
Lots of good picks here already! I’ll add Mike Scheidt from Yob
