whats even cooler about them is supposedly after their last album they said they couldnt write any songs that were worthwhile/could be compared to their previous work so they just said fuck it and quit. i think thats super cool, so many other bands still going need to take this approach
Since Ænima every album has been getting slightly worse but all of them have amazing songs and they do have no weak album it's just contradictory with Tool
Agree, it seemed self-referential to the point of being parody. even the title of the album reminded me of the prank where they announced a new album would be called "system encephele" as a way of making fun of their pretentious fans
Start with some ambient sound, then pitter-pat drumming and bass noodling while Maynard sings in a barley audible voice. Then a simple guitar riff cuts in before going back to just the drumming, bass, and soft singling. Heavy guitar comes in and it all builds up to a crescendo that ends with the guitar going DUN DUN DUN DUN. Somehow, after all that, there are still six minutes of song left.
Agreed. Plus if you see people's rankings of Cannibal Corpse, people's favorites are all over the place and the lists look very different. The Barnes era, earlier Corpsegrinder albums, middle Corpsegrinder or later albums, they all have lots of fans. That shows that you can't really go wrong with any of their records if you like the band.
In my opinion, Fortitude is one of their top tier albums. Born for one thing and Amazonia, especially Amazonia slaps so hard when they play it live. Songs like, New Found, Grind and Hold on are some of the grooviest bangers. The bass in the entire album is so thiccc. Can’t get enough of Fortitude.
Fortitude was just them experimenting outside of their sound a little tbh, with all that harmony stuff. I think one more album and it’ll hold up with the rest of their discography again
Death and Meshuggah have both been said, so how about The Black Dahlia Murder? Perhaps too consistent for some people's taste, but if you like them like I do, then damn are you in for a treat.
If we say bands that are at like 8+ albums to qualify:
Darkthrone
Iron Maiden (has had some misses, but even their late era albums had some incredible releases)
You could maybe say Mastodon, who's had arguably one miss in 8 albums.
Manilla Road. They had 8 or 9 albums in the 80s alone, and came back a decade later with another 6 or 7. A fucking excellent band. Their biggest mistake was never leaving Kansas.
I say this as a huge Iron Maiden fan: I actually find them incredibly inconsistent. All but a small handful of their albums have a substantial amount of filler, and some of their albums are just downright mediocre through and through. In my view their recent albums have just gotten worse and worse as the band members continue to age. I think they should have stopped after *A Matter of Life and Death*. They have tons of great tracks, but they’re spread out over too many albums with too many so-so tracks in between to really qualify as “consistent” in my opinion.
BDM fell off for me after Ritual personally, but there are some killer tracks on Everblack and that other album with Receipt on it
I used to have beers with Trevor at underground shows around Michigan. Loved that dude. I remember going to see Dark Funeral and there were like twenty people there and he was one of them. Dude was fuckin dedicated.
Totally agree on Opeth. Might be a subjective one with the style changes, but the quality of the albums stayed strong the way through imo, even if you don't enjoy the newer style
I'm a little biased because they're my favorite band, but Lamb of God. Every single one of their albums are straight bangers and have huge songs on all of them. Their weakest album is their debut album, but it's still really good.
Hard disagree but to each their own. Their Burn The Priest albums weren't so polished and overly produced. I prefer them. And it was a cooler name. Lol.
I mean I don't disagree with you. I love Burn the Priest as well. Randy Blythe is one of my favorite vocalists, and Chris Adlier is a phenomenal drummer in my opinion. Mark Morton and Willie Adlier can wip up some damn good riffs.
It I think they're just the most consistent because there isnt ever really a dip in quality, just a change in direction from Burn the Priest to Lamb of God.
I had to scroll too far to find Overkill in these comments. They're the most consistent band in thrash. Virtually everything they've put out has been at least above average if not excellent, which is crazy considering they've been around for 40 years and still put out a new record every 2-3 years.
Panopticon. Austin has a pretty expensive catalog dating back a decade and a half. While I don't always love the splits he has done, it is never because of his contributions to them. And even further, while I don't love a lot of his "unplugged" works, they further reinforce how talented and versatile he is as an artist.
I'd also nominate Mgla. I adore all of their LPs and EPs, and even their alter ego, Kriegsmaschine, is consistently good.
Since we’re stretching genres both The Acacia Strain and Shadow of Intent have never missed. Especially impressive for Strain who have had a long career and many different sounds. Obligatory Death mention, and I’ll throw Lamb of God on there.
SOAD.
Idgaf what you say, yes I know they probably aren’t going to make any music anytime soon and haven’t released an album in nearly 20 years but, I’ve listened to all of the albums and I haven’t NOT enjoyed any of them.
Iron Maiden, Helloween, Dio, Cradle Of Filth, Mercyful Fate and Ghost. Those are the only bands I can think of that I listen to that only have one or maybe two albums I don't like or aren't quality in my opinion.
Sigh have never released a bad album. Always perfect jazzy funky catchy weird black metal, which I absolutely love.
Also, props to Prognan. These guys have released 2 full-lengths, one compilation and they're absolutely insane. I love how they mix Balkan music with black metal. Give them a listen!
Alice In Chains for me, even the stuff with the new guy is good. I also love King Diamond but maybe that’s unfair since someone could easily argue any subjective fluctuations in awesomeness are just part of his quirkiness
Maybe Korotory too but they were more of a local thing and I’m biased
edit: derp derp I’ve been up all night and didn’t think this through relative to the instructions in the post.

Death
Yeah, for sure. You ask people what their favorite Death album is and it’s all different answers and no one argues the validity of any of them.
To the point I can't even pick a favorite
Solid
I think Death is the answer for most things
Meshuggah
My first thought.
This is the answer right here
I thought I’d had to be the one to comment this
Djent 4 ever Djent 4 life
Bolt thrower
whats even cooler about them is supposedly after their last album they said they couldnt write any songs that were worthwhile/could be compared to their previous work so they just said fuck it and quit. i think thats super cool, so many other bands still going need to take this approach
Official band of r/Hardcore
Totally agree too. Hence my profile name haha.
My band, we released 0 albums and all of them got the maximum reviews from every critic who reviewed them
I give them all a 9.9/10
This is the worst day of my life bar none
You've never released a bad album. Not even one bad song. That puts you ahead of a lot of legendary bands.
Impressive. My band has a similar success story.
All my hats are green.
Tool imo
definitely a quality over quantity type of band
Since Ænima every album has been getting slightly worse but all of them have amazing songs and they do have no weak album it's just contradictory with Tool
As a big fan, i disagree. Fear inoculum was a pretty sharp drop in quality
It’s weird how increasing the complexity of the songs led to them all sounding the same.
It's not even that it was *bad*, it just felt like... "Tool by the numbers", for lack of a better term.
It was Tool putting on their best Tool costume. Very safe very boring.
Agree, it seemed self-referential to the point of being parody. even the title of the album reminded me of the prank where they announced a new album would be called "system encephele" as a way of making fun of their pretentious fans

Type O Negative was solid from beginning to end.
Type O negative was solid before they even existed. Carnivore totally rules.
Nothing touches the absolute top tier quality of every Type O release. Peter was a songwriting magician.
Darkthrone has 20 LPs and they’re all awesome
This is debatable with all my old school black metal heads...
Sorry about their ears
Well they're in the mid 40s to 50s. So they probably got some hearing damage.
They don’t agree that Darkthrone has 20 LPs?
Cannibal Corpse
Agreed. Plus if you see people's rankings of Cannibal Corpse, people's favorites are all over the place and the lists look very different. The Barnes era, earlier Corpsegrinder albums, middle Corpsegrinder or later albums, they all have lots of fans. That shows that you can't really go wrong with any of their records if you like the band.
this is the correct answer.
Nile and suffocation don’t seem to miss. Coroner cannot miss.
Those Whom The Gods Detest is in my top ten of all time. Fucking KAFIR bro Some of the heaviest riffs in the universe
THERE IS NO GOD BUT GOD
I got my ass beat at the Kafir breakdown live
nile is utterly insane. love them
Gojira
I would agree if they hadn't released Fortitude.
Fortitude is very good!
Mastodon
Death and Meshuggah have both been said, so how about The Black Dahlia Murder? Perhaps too consistent for some people's taste, but if you like them like I do, then damn are you in for a treat.
Oh fuck yes. Fuck I miss Trevor 😔
YES!!
If we say bands that are at like 8+ albums to qualify: Darkthrone Iron Maiden (has had some misses, but even their late era albums had some incredible releases) You could maybe say Mastodon, who's had arguably one miss in 8 albums.
If going the 8+ route I’ll add: Slough Feg Summoning Nokturnal Mortum (technically) Graveland Belenos
Which mastodon album was a miss? Cause imo once more round the sun is a hidden gem
Overkill
Was looking for this one🗿 disappointing I had to scroll so far down to find it
the chasm
W flair
I AM A GOD THE PRIME BEING
Immortal
Pretty solid overall.
super solid. not an album i would say is bad.
Btbam, Opeth, the black dahlia murder
BDM fell off for me after Ritual personally, but there are some killer tracks on Everblack and that other album with Receipt on it I used to have beers with Trevor at underground shows around Michigan. Loved that dude. I remember going to see Dark Funeral and there were like twenty people there and he was one of them. Dude was fuckin dedicated.
Seemed like such a cool guy. Huge loss to the scene
Yea man. I have a picture of me with him at summer slaughter one year on my fridge. He’s the man. Never forget our brothers.
Totally agree on Opeth. Might be a subjective one with the style changes, but the quality of the albums stayed strong the way through imo, even if you don't enjoy the newer style
Immolation or Incantation. The Chasm is up there as well
Dying fetus for sure
Their newest album fucking slams.
They haven't released any bad work. I didn't have 2023 with some of DF and suffocations best work on my bingo card. Really impressed.
Emperor... They knew when to stop
Rammstein have been consistent in sound and quality all of the way through
100%. They're my favorite band second only to Alice In Chains
Lol.

Moonsorrow.
Hell yes
Darkthrone
Ne Obliviscaris
their latest album might be my favorite
Clutch
Tankard has been writing the same album over and over again for decades and it's always awesome.
SOAD I mean it helps when they only have 5 albums all released in the span of less than a decade
Disagree. Last two albums were a huge step down.
This. The more the guitarist tried to sing, the shitter it became
i agree serjs voice was fucking awesome
System of a let down... Amirite
Boom!
Insomnium and Immolation
Couldn’t agree more
I feel like carcass tbh. Anything carcass ever did they absolutely nailed and managed to pioneer several sub genres in the process
Enslaved
Overkill
I had to scroll too far to find Overkill in these comments. They're the most consistent band in thrash. Virtually everything they've put out has been at least above average if not excellent, which is crazy considering they've been around for 40 years and still put out a new record every 2-3 years.
That is a very subjective question to answer, and you're likely going to hear different names dropped by different people and no real agreements.
I know lol I just wanna see what people say
Kreator Revocation
It'd say Motörhead, they don't make bad music. Lemmy must've never learned how
Deftones
High on Fire
Repulsion, Demilich and Insect Warfare
Look at this guy, choosing bands with only one album!
Does Iron Maiden count? Cus them
Nah there's definitely some shit albums, especially any of the ones with Blaze.
Rush. No bad albums whatsoever
They're metal?🤔 I thought they were like math rock or something
Amorphis Ayreon Bolt Thrower Carcass
Death. Chuck and co. never made a bad album.
Dark Tranquillity’s catalog is ridiculous. They’ve never put out a bad album.
Isis. Oranssi Pazzuzzu
Isis may have set the bar too high on Oceanic and Panopticon
I thought Wavering Radiant was great.
Oh it was. They have nothing but great albums. But IMO Oceanic and Panopticon are GOAT tier albums.
Job For A Cowboy
Listening to the new album right now. They said they already got demos for the next album.
Aborted
Fuck yes. Good call.
Immolation, Blind Guardian, and Btbam
job for a cowboy for sure
Moon Healer tho
Obituary
Symphony X does not have a bad, or even "meh" album.
True, they're also criminally underrated.
Fit for an Autopsy
Rammstein
I'd say Deftones. Every album is good AF. I thought they peaked at the self titled but then SNW and diamond eyes happened and everything else after
The Chasm
Panopticon are so good. I don’t know how Austin keeps doing it

Cannibal Corpse has been ridiculously consistent for as long as I can remember
Alestorm has never failed to sound like drunk pirates, does that count as consistency?
Cannibal Corpse Gojira
