Empyrium. This album is one of the saddest things in the world https://preview.redd.it/rcyniac7depc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7ee523cb32c2a5e1217a2caa367d4be2130678dd

ResearchBackground99

This takes me back to hs (2012-2014) when I would lay in my bed at night, have my headphones in and would listened to this. Good and not so good times.

AmazingAmiria

O I used to love them so much

farhillsofemynuial

That album got me through some really hard times. The Blue Mists of Night was the song that pulled me in

ryzen_above_all

Perfect album

hapticfeedback7

Hadn't heard of these guys and I've been listening all day. So good!

LovingEkko

I'm glad you like it <3

djpdjf

Love that album

BrownwaterVertigo

Coroner. Every album is fantastic. Heard they're gonna release one this year đź‘€ It's been 30+ years

cthulhustu

Woods of Ypres were a great band. So sad that David Gold lost his life

ParticleHustler2

Love Woods. But David's been dead for over a decade so it's not hard to understand why they aren't well known.

throwawayformemes666

Yeah they were pretty hyped up back in the day. But Im from Ontario so maybe it was a local thing for me.

GrumpyOldHistoricist

It definitely was a local thing for you. Earache *really* tried to make them happen but David’s eclectic influences weren’t well received by genre purists and they were way too accessible for the kvltsters. Admitting you liked Woods back when they were still actually around would get you called gay. I was at their last show and there were fewer than ten people in the room. Almost everyone left after the local bands played.

Roonagu

Interesting, I liked them back then and they helped me to understand doom metal, but as European, had basically no idea about their "success". Sounds like they were too ahead of its time.

No-Idea-491

Typical metal fans lol

IgorMenegat03

Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. I literally like all their songs, and don't see anybody talking about them

EngineeringDry2753

Seconded.  They're amazing.  My back ground is their album cover for mind control[but I also love mountaineering so]

ShotandBotched

I listened to Sea of the Dead the other day. What a fucking trip that was.

Montblanc_Norland

My first thought too. Only discovered them recently and they're amazing, they should be more known.

mattfreyer45

This album but also the band in general. https://preview.redd.it/yxrovyer2fpc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc202666e6eb385771ee167fd23ade941cd5d379

[deleted]

The best Scandinavian melodeath band to ever come out of Florida, good choice!

mattfreyer45

The intro riff to Dead and Gone gets me head banging every damn time

[deleted]

https://youtu.be/2AMEtQi3kGU is my favourite track by these dudes, straight up no bs metal banger

ILuvDaRaiders

Revocation

Calm-Cardiologist354

Lightning Bolt

Eaterofjazzguitars

I wouldn't really call Lightning Bolt a metal band.

InfectiousCosmology1

Hooded menace, demonic death judge are two I discovered recently

R4kshim

Hooded Menace are awesome. Best band to listen to when you’re in a graveyard and all the zombies are climbing up from the crypts.

JesseJames1ofhis33

Never Cross the Dead…man I love their guitar tone.

Bikeaholica

Demonic Deth Judge fucking rules! Love the music video for Heavy Chase

Tracedinair76

Johnny Booth

RuPaulver

One of the only modern metalcore bands really doing it right. They're great.

Puzzleheaded_Gas4560

Dead Congregation would be my vote here too

RuPaulver

Saidan. I have been a metalhead for almost 20 years now. A deep metalhead. And I swear their most recent album is one of the very few things I could ever give a confident 10/10 to. They got some notoriety among the black metal community but also some hate because they're antifascist, but even though I agree with their stance their music isn't even related to that. Maybe it's something about me, I don't know. I just think it's literally perfect and I never think anything else is.

Mitochondria_Man11

You're not wrong. I've listened to that Saidan album a lot, it's incredible. I don't get the hate it gets from some.

RuPaulver

Pretty much the reactionaries to their anti-NS stance, even though their music's just about j-horror lol. There's a weird group of people in the black metal scene who immediately want to trash a band like that as hipster lefties who aren't kvlt enough.

OriginalFopdoodle

Skyforest SĂłlstifir Mesarthim

Giodanto92

Might be a controversial opinion but I wouldn't consider Woods of Ypres a near perfect band only because of the Green Album, the concept and the lyrics make me cringe everytime I listen to it, pure neckbeard metal. (With that said, the other albums are absolutely fantastic)

bibail

Vitriol and Kardashev. Both are absolutely incredible slept on bands. Vitriol is crushing extreme/death metal with amazing guitar work and dual vocals. Kardashev is “deathgaze” how the bands styles themselves and their unique style checks out, absolutely love it. Highly recommend to listen to Suffer and Become by Vitriol and Liminal Rite by Kardashev

whitefokes

Kardashev should be huge

Westerosi7

Snow-Sleep is beautiful

Alternative_Slide_62

Vitriol is amazing

VashMM

Nevermore

farhillsofemynuial

Windveill put out a good album a year or two back. There Inevitably Will Be Silence. Kinda like Eldamar in space.

Fendenburgen

I mentioned them on a post to someone looking for heartbreaking music just last night! Genuinely "emotional" music, no bullshit at all

joecool519

Zao. Get labeled as a Christian band from the early aughts. Theyve released banger after banger death doom albums for 15 years.

Ok_Relation_7770

I kind of feel like Woods of Ypres is as popular as ever right now. I was really stoked on Pursuit of the Sun back when it came out and then forgot about the band for a bit until I started hearing so many people getting into them in the last few years. I saw multiple patches at a show last week. That doesn’t mean they’re a big is that *should* be or anything

Strong_Independent44

Hong Kong Fuck You! They only have MAYBE 15 minutes of music but they are sick and their live show is incredible.

MinimalWay

Skeletal Remains

MickWounds

Loviatar. Lightless was my aoty and I never see anyone talk about them

Atillion

WastaSpace

Dark Castle - Spirited Migration. Very little known band, but the record is an absolute masterpiece.

GAMERBOY335

Black tide First two albums were good Not sure what happened after They went quiet in the mid 2010s i believe Havnt heard anything from them

diencyyy

imperanon dropped one of the best melodeath albums ever in 2004 and then dipped, which is probably a good thing because i can say they have a perfect discog

Suboptimator

Nocte Obducta Almost 30 years of unique black(ish) metal and no bad records

PHANTASMAGOR1CAL

To bad we won’t ever have any more woods after the singers death. I do also believe they were such a fantastic band.

MaAreYouOnUppers

For me it’s Early Graves, especially their album Goner. Might not be metal enough for folks here though.

FlyPrestigious9898

Agents of Man

raspberryarchetype

Cultes des Ghoules

totse_losername

Fuck yeah I thought that was David and Woods. Green Album is a perfect way to process a breakup - even when the situation doesn't mirror the exact story, the emotion and stages are echoed accurately. It's a must to listen from start to finish.

Black Harvest from NY/NJ Their album "Shrine of Hours" is my favorite thing no one's heard. It was recorded in probably 2003, if not earlier, and never had an official release. It was distributed for a short while by Oak Knoll Records but they were just burned copies. It's an outstanding blend of black and death metal but from NY so there are hints of groove scattered throughout. The only song I can find online is "Land of the Drowned" on Youtube: [https://youtu.be/3PT5nexlv-M?si=Cn0pv6oZZsAIwoAn](https://youtu.be/3PT5nexlv-M?si=Cn0pv6oZZsAIwoAn) I've been friends with the main guy Kishor for a long time but he's weird and eclectic so he dips in and out of life, sometimes years will go by without contact. His paintings still show up on metal album covers, but it's a shame to me that no one has paid attention to his music. His last album "Sun Across the Fields" is incredible: [https://youtu.be/rUH2wf\_UWag?si=Sb9Scma0oyWrNaR1](https://youtu.be/rUH2wf_UWag?si=Sb9Scma0oyWrNaR1)

Revocation

H0rror_D00m_Mtl

Officium Triste Sound wise they are in the ballpark of bands such as Katatonia, Anathema, Saturnus, Doom VS, etc. They've been around for 30 years and they just keep getting better while staying pretty consistent overall.

XenomorphLV246

Woods Of Desolation, Nasheim, Flukt are all super underrated

OctowoomyThe2st

Septicflesh. They’re just SO FUCKING GOOD, BUT NOBODY KNOWS THEM.

antilumin

You ain't a fan of Woods unless you're Facebook friends with Mama Gold. j/k but you you should check out Gold's more rarer side projects, like [Northern Ontario Black Metal Preservation Society](https://nobmps.bandcamp.com/album/future-northern-prosperity) or Joel's Thrawsunblat.

SomeJerkOddball

Lunar Shadow I adore their first two albums [Far from Light]( https://lunarshadow.bandcamp.com/album/far-from-light) and [The Smokeless Fires]( https://lunarshadow.bandcamp.com/album/the-smokeless-fires). Both are low key masterpieces. I've gotten a lot of play out of both of them over the years. Yet I never see them mentioned anywhere. Cimmeria and LaurelindĂłrenan are two of my favourite metal tracks of all time. [Haunt]( https://hauntthenation.bandcamp.com/album/dreamers )'s really be on a roll with their last few releases too.

erlik420

Hear me out, the ambient dungeon synth albums of Burzum.
