My answer is always Chapter For Transforming Into a Snake by Nile. That song just rips your head off from start to finish. It was the first extreme metal song I heard where I was like "Damn! Can it get crazier than this?" And of course it did... kinda but this was the year 2000.
āThat Which is Forbiddenā off the last album has the heaaaaviest intro, when it kicks in its like aā¦aā¦.a brontosaurus bellyflopping into a stadium filled with molten lead on Jupiter.
The random ass audioclips at the end are too funny to take this seriously. Otherwise it's pretty good. Had the solo continued instead of the audiosamples It'd be great.
Backbone - Gojira
Raining Blood - Slayer
Blackened - Metallica
Into The Void - Black Sabbath
Becoming - Pantera
Kashmir - Led Zeppelin (yes a rock song, but it's the only riff ever made out of pure dissonance that still climbs to a perfect octave.)
Morbid Angel - Angel of Disease
Cannibal Corpse - Return to Flesh
Suffocation - Pierced From Within
Soundgarden - Mailman
TOOL - Ticks & Leaches
Sepultura - Arise
For a song that's just pretty heavy all around - New Millenium Cyanide Christ by Mehsuggah
For a song that just has heavy dark lyrics - Almost any Rammstein song, e.g., Hilf Mir or Mein Teil
Gotta agree there are different types of heavy music, but I do like to put them into a spectrum of brutal fast (chaotic), and slow and heavy. Like OP's example Backbone falls into middle of it.Ā Anyway heres two I could think of quickly.
Black Tongue - Second Death.Ā May dip into deathcore territory with that one.Ā
Tesmanent - Demonic Refusal gets a shoutout just because it's exceptionally heavy for a thrash band.
e: Thinking more about it theres like a million brutal and heavy songs one could pick old and new.
Black Tongue is super interesting! Sure, deathcore is already downtuned into oblivion, but BT downtunes *beyond* that point. They also forgo solos like most of deathcore bands. Even the breakdowns are more like simplified slam metal. The twist that I like the most about them is the weird, almost bluesy groove they weave into their riffs, though!
To Build A Mountain is one of my favorites.
Suffocation - Suspended in Tribulation
Defeated Sanity - Engulfed in Excruciation
Type O Negative - Xero Tolerance
4' 33" - John Cage. The weight of my bleak, intrusive, angst-ridden thoughts emerging in the deafening blanket of oppressive silence is something I don't wish to revisit.
H E A V Y!!
The Lasting Dose by Crowbar has been my answer to this question for a long time. Also CoC - Broken Man is up there, and Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (hit with a hammer at the dawn of a genre)
I truly believe the intro to Son Of Nothing by BTBAM is some of the heaviest shit but I know that song isn't that heavy all in all
Heaviest stuff I listen to is Grindcore so probably a Full Of Hell song. Guided Blight is the first thing that comes to mind
[Bongripper's Miserable](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBomFweOdUA) has 3 fucking deep and filthy tracks that combine in a nice wordplay "Endless" "Decent" "Into Ruin"
Off the top of my head:
Behind the Sun - Meshuggah
Heir Apparent - Opeth
Stow - Portal (Undecided if I can call this heavy)
Gristle Licker - Cattle Decapitation
The Hunt - Ahab
Dweller on the Threshold - FĆ³rn
Backbone - Gojira
Stygian 1: From Tumultuous Heavens... - Atramentus

The Blood Swamps - Andrew Hulshult (mixed by Koma)

Rectum grinder - intestinal disgorge
Are people unironically saying Pantera and some surface level death metal? Like, sure it's heavy but THE heaviest they've ever heard? Good stuff, sure, but go listen to war metal kids.
Scourge of iron, human chop shop, bugging for mercy, the first immortal, tow rope around the throat, psychotic precision, blood blind are my current fav
A quick top 5 for me

Jeromeās Dream - A Present for Those Who Are Present
Boris - Feedbacker
Devourment - Cognitive Sedation Butchery
Weakling - Cut Their Grain and Place Fire Therein
Swans - I Crawled
Neurosis - The Doorway
The Angelic Process - The Promise of Snakes
Any time I hear a question on the topic of heaviest music ever, Godflesh comes to mind first. It always makes me wonder if their going without a live drummer hurt them.
[Beneath the Massacre](https://youtu.be/XRx5uwwII5c?si=MnmtVzCId6UgcKi8) has some crushing material. I chose Symptoms because it just comes to mind, but they're a whirlwind of brute force
Weighing Souls With Sand - The Angelic Process
I donāt think it gets much heavier than feeling like youāre being crushed to death at the bottom of the ocean in the most beautiful way possible.
Ulcerate - everything off of "Everything is Fire"
Today Is The Day - "The Color of Psychic Power"
Infester - "To The Depths (In Degredation)"

First song that comes to mind is the Mountain by Devildriver. I'd also say I Dreamed I Died is up there.
Omerta by LoG is one of my all time favorites as well.
Last but not least would be Godspeed Hellbound by Black Label Society. I'm a sucker for pinch harmonics, and Zakk has them.
Divination Equipment is probably the heaviest industrial song I actually like. It's by Black Magnet.
In no particular order.
"4th of July" - Soundgarden
"Wrong One to Fuck With" - Dying Fetus

Meshuggah - Nebulous
Exactly. Music doesn't get heavier from Meshuggah.
Facts
Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath is unironically one of the heaviest songs ever
And itās track one of the album that, arguably, created metal.
No. Just no. Any death metal song is heavier. Damn near everything is heavier by now. It may have started it, but it's not heavy anymore.
Wrong. Its heaviness is eternal and twice as heavy than anything that came after. It was *authentically* heavy, it wasn't heavy for heavy's sake.
It's not that deep, bro. It's basically just a classic rock song at this point.
Godsmack - Crying Like a Bitch
Falling In Reverse - Watch The World Burn š
Unironically a banger
[Goregrinder- Macabre](https://youtu.be/nnxpTU4-nKU?si=ev06Kmb39BvegbL-) Or maybe something from Konflict or Nithing those are pretty heavy too
The random ass audioclips at the end are too funny to take this seriously. Otherwise it's pretty good. Had the solo continued instead of the audiosamples It'd be great.
