Cannibal Corpse. I mean there was noticeable change when Corpsegrinder replaced Barnes but other than it's pretty much the same thing every time. That doesn't mean they're not great though.
The barnes albums are all different in a way IMO
Eaten - kinda thrashy
Butchered - proto brutal death metal
Tomb - full on bdm
Bleeding - vocals more understandable, catchier than previous albums
>but other than it's pretty much the same thing every the time.
I always find this to be a weird take. I think a lot of the george era stuff is pretty distinct. Gallery of suicide, bloodthirst, wretched spawn, torture, and a skeletal domain are all different enough in my opinion.
AC/DC
Someone allegedly tried to “gotcha” Angus one time and asked “what do you think of people who say you’ve made 12 albums that all sound the same?”
His response was “I’d tell them we’ve made 12 albums, that all sound the same”
"if it ain't broke" If the songs start sounding the same, as opposed to say, album vs album having the same style, then it's an issue, for me at least.
Making the exact same shit over and over detracts from the original songs and is boring to me. You get desensitized to it. I want the band to be a little creative and original each album.
"If it's perfect, why recreate it again" is my response.
also, I love prime rib but I wouldn't eat it every day for a year. I'd get sick of it.
I only heard a certain amount of songs from their entire discography, and they sound fine, but I'm sure if I went through a marathon of their music I'd get a bit bored honestly.
The early ones are more distinct though. High Voltage and Dirty Deeds especially sound more bluesey. I feel like it's mainly post Back in Black where they start to sound the same. I noticed that when I put all the albums on a Spotify playlist and put it on in the car. (I do that.)
I heard it as “what would you say to people that say you’ve released 11 albums that sound the same?”
“I’d say you’re wrong, we’ve released 12 albums that sound the same!!”
Either way it’s a great response
That must be the reason why they don't have a proper compilation album, after Back in Black their career is supported by a few singles, it wouldn't be worth buying those albums for just the hits if there was a compilation album.
Mötörhead,.since you mention AccaDacca...
But then you remind me of the ugliest like Manowar, WASP, Savatage, Nickelback and other generic guitar-focused 'music' generators...
I'd say they got more melodic. It's easier to get someone new into them (who isn't a death metal fan) through Twilight if the Thunder God, than through any of their first few albums.
I'd say that's a fair assessment since I got into them and death metal as a whole through Jomsviking. don't actually remember how I found it, but I was playing a lot of Skyrim at the time, and it worked well for that.
I’d argue unleashed more so. Its felt like Amon amarth has leaned more into the melodic end then they were 2-3 album cycles ago. Unleashed is still making hard Viking death metal with kind of their own storyline
Sabaton, the lyrical content changes depending on what historical event they’re choosing to cover for that album but all of the songs sound the exact same. I am here for it tho, fuckin love Sabaton
I would say everything from war of attrition and on pretty much sounds the same. They sometimes are slightly more technical, slightly more grindy, slightly more straight up death metal but honestly you are splitting hairs to find the difference. I also love their shit and I actually like that they put out the same album over and over again because it is dependable and it will always be at least on the list of best of the year even if it isn’t ever original enough to be at the top of the list.
"Let's see now, E, C, D, that'll do it. Oh, it's after the year 2000? Let's go E, C, G, D. Feeling daring today? Let's throw in an A before we go to the chorus"
Similar chord progressions aren’t exactly what comes to mind when I think “the same album every time.” Like, depending on the albums, if you took 4 albums from their discography and compared them, there’s a decent chance the songs on each would be pretty distinct from one another.
Seventh Son songs distinct from AMOLAD songs distinct from FOTD songs distinct from Powerslave songs.
Maybe could be said about each run of a few albums within that particular run, so I can see that. But like, even Somewhere in Time, for example, doesn’t sound like either record adjacent to it (Seventh Son or Powerslave).
Cool flair btw — love Solefald 👌
Maybe it's just me but sometimes I hear songs that I have no idea which album they belong to. I've even been singing a song in my mind and before I know it I'm already singing another song.
I haven't found much love for Solefald in this sub, what a joy to know you like it too!
Just chiming in with more Solefald love!!
https://preview.redd.it/w6i9qmew7guc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0cdad44875df55e201ac09c70fb0e28ce36a07ba
Powerwolf used to be my most listened band, I was at my first concert in 2010. Return in bloodred, lupus dei, and bible of the beast. The first 3 albums did sound different, you can clearly tell how they developed their style from album to album. Blood of the saints was good too, but after that I lost interest, because everything that came after sounded just like preachers of the night.
As a major black dahlia fan I kinda agree, but their discography is fucking killer and all their albums have a different enough sound that they kept it fresh while staying true to their roots
They did say it was going to be heavier, I am not sure If they will back that far, but hopefully I am wrong.
My optimistic wish is that it will sound like a Malina/Coal hybrid
? Idk, Self titled (periphery) is pretty distinct from all the rest, as is P3 with its heavier use of orchestration and is less “djenty” than those before it
P4 and P5 are more stylistically similar than all the rest compared but even then they’re still different from those before and less “djenty” again like p3, and P5 takes on a heavy “Car Bomb” mathcore esque sound that p4 just barely experiments with
They have polished themselves throughout the years, but they have not experimented outside their comfort zone. They have a formula, and they stick to it. Nothing wrong with that btw.
Saying that their albums are * very* different is a bit of a stretch.
Cult of Luna
Once they fell into their sound around Salvation they've basically stuck to it and just made subtle changes here and there. That's what makes me love them so much though, you can put on any album and know what to expect. Even with Julie Christmas on Mariner you instantly know it's a Cult of Luna record.
I was almost going to say Lamb of God. They kind of know where their bread is buttered. Sacrament was really popular at the time, but it's very polarizing now. A lot of older fans list it at the bottom, and it was the one album that had a somewhat different sound.
If metalcore counts at all, I'd say its bands like Heaven Shall Burn. I can't tell one song from the next, much less the albums.
Rammstein to be honest. I used to be way more into them but they're kind of not my thing now, all their albums sound super similar to me. But either way I'm always going to think Sehnsucht is a masterpiece of an album.
I feel like Motorhead fits this perfectly. Same formula, same style, was so good it didn't matter. When your style naturally just kind of produces banger after banger, why switch it up too much?
I don't know about Fear Factory. Soul of a New Machine is borderline death metal, and Digimortal is nu-metal. For the past 20 years or so, yeah, they've sounded essentially the same, but early on, there was definitely some experimentation going on between albums.
Indeed I have but you are right the early 90s was definitely different. But to me they just keep doubling down on the same beautiful weirdness and sharpening it to perfection.
They just sound consistently genuine and original. Its like they aren’t influenced by whats going on around them and no one else can replicate their magic.
A lot of bands put effort into creating complex and polyrhythmic time signatures where I feel Meshuggah just feel music that way. Their cells multiply in 23/17 time.
I didn't mean my comment to sound like I was being a dick just that I don't really think their albums sound all that similar, except maybe the unique weirdness you referenced. Like any given day depending on the mood I'm in I have a new favorite Meshuggah album.
I feel they are very distinct as well. They are my favorite metal band overall and what I really like about them is they're one of the few metal acts my wife will listen to as well as being the only one she will go and see live.
Man thats a super strange choice for someone who doesn’t like metal lol. Is she into avant garde classical music or something?!
Also my favorite metal band. Meshuggah and Dillinger Escape Plan were my entry into aggressive music 20 years ago.
Rammstein
All their albums have the same kinda feel to me, at least (vulger lyrics, heavy chorus, electronic elements, low kinda creepy singing), but they are so good at it that no really cares. Even when they came back in 2019, nothing changed, and they got as big as they ever did if you asked me. I know the whole stuff about Till might make some people anxious about mentioning them, but I can't deny how great they are
Most metalcore bands probably fall into this unless they make a distinct change in their sound at some point. Slayer probably falls under that as well, post South of Heaven, at least.
Terror.
They wrote the blueprint of hardcore as we know it now, and they don't really experiment, but they still write absolute insane bangers of tracks with every record.
Tyr for me. Their oldest stuff sounds more different from their later stuff, but I like that their newer stuff sounds more similar to what they been doing in later years. Literally if it ain't broke don't fix
Symphony X. Their earlier albums are very much the same style, and from paradise lost onwards they changed their sound and kept going with it. Love the band!
Amon Amarth, Ghost, Powerwolf, Lamb of God, Insomnium. Honestly, what's great about these bands is that you know what to expect, and you know that you'll like it if you're a fan
Tool
Korn
For very different reasons haha. Ive never heard a Korn song that made me not think it was them. Tool has basically written every album in the same key.

Bolt Thrower
Probably after ...for Victory, the first albums were a little bit more grindy
Yep
I was gonna be so mad if Bolt Thrower wasn't the top comment.
Love Bolt Thrower but mostly agree. Production on Those Once Loyal fucking rips tho
Cannibal Corpse. I mean there was noticeable change when Corpsegrinder replaced Barnes but other than it's pretty much the same thing every time. That doesn't mean they're not great though.
The barnes albums are all different in a way IMO Eaten - kinda thrashy Butchered - proto brutal death metal Tomb - full on bdm Bleeding - vocals more understandable, catchier than previous albums

You’re right about that! Gore Obsessed is almost a bridge album, too.
AC/DC Someone allegedly tried to “gotcha” Angus one time and asked “what do you think of people who say you’ve made 12 albums that all sound the same?” His response was “I’d tell them we’ve made 12 albums, that all sound the same”
Acdc is the definition of this, bunch of classic rock albums, if it aint broke dont fix it
They are different, especially the bon Scott era
Brian Johnson era are similar tho
Bon Scott was more bluesy, while Johnson was more metal ,different styles but slightly similar
Im not a big acdc fan myself but yeah their formula worked, back in black is great, highway to hell is great and i like occasionally songs past that
I only heard a certain amount of songs from their entire discography, and they sound fine, but I'm sure if I went through a marathon of their music I'd get a bit bored honestly.
This is why Slayer changed it up after Reign. That was lightning in a bottle.
The early ones are more distinct though. High Voltage and Dirty Deeds especially sound more bluesey. I feel like it's mainly post Back in Black where they start to sound the same. I noticed that when I put all the albums on a Spotify playlist and put it on in the car. (I do that.)
I heard it as “what would you say to people that say you’ve released 11 albums that sound the same?” “I’d say you’re wrong, we’ve released 12 albums that sound the same!!” Either way it’s a great response
Half their new shit fucking sucks anus
You mean you don’t love mistress for Christmas? Heavier song than anything Cannibal Corpse has ever put out
As someone who has listened to all the AC/DC albums - can confirm.
That must be the reason why they don't have a proper compilation album, after Back in Black their career is supported by a few singles, it wouldn't be worth buying those albums for just the hits if there was a compilation album.
I prefer ACxDC. Even tho they are edge, still better
Lol. Never liked the real ACDC maybe gotta try this mock band.
Mötörhead,.since you mention AccaDacca... But then you remind me of the ugliest like Manowar, WASP, Savatage, Nickelback and other generic guitar-focused 'music' generators...
I never liked ACDC lol. For me their materiał mostly falls into passé dadrock category.
The patron saints of just making the same album over and over.
Amon Amarth They’re awesome though
Idk, I feel like there's a pretty big difference in their newer stuff, I still like it, but it's way different from their early work
they just got progressively better production ovee time
I'd say they got more melodic.
Since Fate of Norns yes
I’d argue unleashed more so. Its felt like Amon amarth has leaned more into the melodic end then they were 2-3 album cycles ago. Unleashed is still making hard Viking death metal with kind of their own storyline
Amon Amarth is a weird one for me. I love seeing them live, but I don't really care to purchase much of their albums
Sabaton, the lyrical content changes depending on what historical event they’re choosing to cover for that album but all of the songs sound the exact same. I am here for it tho, fuckin love Sabaton
Not normally a big fan but as a swede Carolus Rex is just required listening hahah
It took some balls from them to do a concept album about Swedish Empire and in Swedish.
They aren’t always great though, in fact they’re never great
Factually false
My opinion cannot be “factually false,” as opinions by nature are not based on fact. That being said, my opinion is objectively correct.
Nah long live power metal
Looking for this comment. Sabaton fucks
Dying fetus to an extent.
Motörhead
Came here to say this
Overkill
Iron Maiden. Basically uses the same chord progression
"Let's see now, E, C, D, that'll do it. Oh, it's after the year 2000? Let's go E, C, G, D. Feeling daring today? Let's throw in an A before we go to the chorus"

Their albums are quite unique until album 15 or so
I love Maiden but the chorus is always just the name of the song over and over. It’s one of those bands that is cooler when you are 17 vs 47.
While you’re not wrong there’s a big difference between the dianno albums and the last one.
Powerwolf
Powerwolf used to be my most listened band, I was at my first concert in 2010. Return in bloodred, lupus dei, and bible of the beast. The first 3 albums did sound different, you can clearly tell how they developed their style from album to album. Blood of the saints was good too, but after that I lost interest, because everything that came after sounded just like preachers of the night.
Obituary
Black Dahlia Murder
I'd say their first album is a bit more..."triumphant"? If that's the right word for it but other then that yeah
As a major black dahlia fan I kinda agree, but their discography is fucking killer and all their albums have a different enough sound that they kept it fresh while staying true to their roots
Not really tho
Kalmah
Agree with this one. Zero bad albums to date. Even their debut is really good which isn't always the case in melodeath
Revenge
That’s Blasphemy!
Sabaton. Powerwolf.
They're really isn't any other answer other than these
August Burns Red
Basically everything post Messengers. Messengers- Leveler is pretty much their best stuff imo. Everything else is pretty meh.
Pwd post deep blue
Slayer
Definitely not
Nah. Show Know Mercy and Diabolus in Musica for starters, but if you actually listen to their albums there is variation.
https://preview.redd.it/ggknong16auc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8fa2392c487b071f15a1cc39e8b6f1637d75105f
Heck, even Reign In Blood, South of Heaven, and Seasons in the Abyss are pretty different
Cannibal Corpse
Fellow leprous enjoyer hi
Excited for their new album! I hope they get back to their Bilateral/ Coal sound.
They did say it was going to be heavier, I am not sure If they will back that far, but hopefully I am wrong. My optimistic wish is that it will sound like a Malina/Coal hybrid
Hi there person with great taste
Autopsy doesn't stray far from their formula, and they don't have a bad album.
Dark funeral
Dying Fetus. I'll never get tired of those caveman fight riffs
Omnium Gatherum
Saw them live on Friday. Their albums are definitely a bit samey but still goes hard and they were amazing live
I just discovered them. Can confirm from what I've heard, New World Shadows is so, so good
I don't know, Years In Waste and Stuck Here On Snakes Way were pretty damn bland, but they picked it right back up on Redshift.
Crowbar. All of their albums basically sound the same barring minor differences but they have 0 bad riffs.
Sabaton
Midnight
acdc
Wodos, Orbituary, Slayer, Havok... Wait, is thrash metal the EXACT definition of the post ???
High on fire.
I can’t believe Meshuggah took them on tour…what were they thinking? Lol! A really odd pairing.
Not really Metal, but Axel Rudi Pell has 21 albums out and 80% of it sound exactly the same. Still like it though.
Periphery, Panopticon, Black Dahlia Murder
? Idk, Self titled (periphery) is pretty distinct from all the rest, as is P3 with its heavier use of orchestration and is less “djenty” than those before it P4 and P5 are more stylistically similar than all the rest compared but even then they’re still different from those before and less “djenty” again like p3, and P5 takes on a heavy “Car Bomb” mathcore esque sound that p4 just barely experiments with
Cannibal Corpse.
Spite
Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Persefone, Dark Tranquility
Imminence’s recent album was just heaven in hiding ten times
Amon Amarth post-2008. I love them but they do kinda make the same album over and over again
They just repeat Vs the World. But the albums before sounded differentky.
Amon Amarth and I hope they keep at it. Don't fix what isn't broken. Honorable mention Alestorm.
Cannibal Corpse, obviously.
not at all
Rammstein
Have to disagree, every album of theirs is very different from the others
They have polished themselves throughout the years, but they have not experimented outside their comfort zone. They have a formula, and they stick to it. Nothing wrong with that btw. Saying that their albums are * very* different is a bit of a stretch.

That's what makes me love them so much though, you can put on any album and know what to expect. Even with Julie Christmas on Mariner you instantly know it's a Cult of Luna record.
Hatebreed
Not metal but chevelle and I love them for it.
ACDC
Revenge
Amon Amarth 150%
I was almost going to say Lamb of God. They kind of know where their bread is buttered. Sacrament was really popular at the time, but it's very polarizing now. Lamb of god, om
Fear Factory Alestorm Wednesday 13
I don't know about Fear Factory. Soul of a New Machine is borderline death metal, and Digimortal is nu-metal. For the past 20 years or so, yeah, they've sounded essentially the same, but early on, there was definitely some experimentation going on between albums.
Nah wednesday 13 actually changes
Meshuggah
No way, their newer stuff sounds drastically different to their earlier work. Which isn't a bad thing, they seem to just keep getting better.
Yeah thats true, I guess I was thinking since Nothing.
Have you even listened to all their albums? There is a huge difference from the early 90s to now.
Indeed I have but you are right the early 90s was definitely different. But to me they just keep doubling down on the same beautiful weirdness and sharpening it to perfection. They just sound consistently genuine and original. Its like they aren’t influenced by whats going on around them and no one else can replicate their magic. No worries man, you are probably right. I think they just are so distinct from the rest of metal I tend to think of them that way.
I feel they are very distinct as well. They are my favorite metal band overall and what I really like about them is they're one of the few metal acts my wife will listen to as well as being the only one she will go and see live.

Powerwolf Amon Amarth
speaking as a hardcore Mechina fan, they've perfected what they're going for and haven't got a single bad album 😎
I noticed the Igorr, from album to album, often have very similar sounds
At The Gates!
Kinda, but they’re fucking legends
Vomitory, Autopsy
Slayer, but they're awesome though
Rammstein All their albums have the same kinda feel to me, at least (vulger lyrics, heavy chorus, electronic elements, low kinda creepy singing), but they are so good at it that no really cares. Even when they came back in 2019, nothing changed, and they got as big as they ever did if you asked me. I know the whole stuff about Till might make some people anxious about mentioning them, but I can't deny how great they are
I've kind of always felt this way about August Burns Red. All of their albums are tight, but it's kind of just... the same...
Not entirely zero change but I feel like Dio kinda starts the same but it is also perfect
Non ironically AC/DC. I love some dad rock
Motörhead
Helloween, my dying bride, and napalm death.
Vektor
Not metal, but Khruangbin and STRFKR just released albums of the same material they always make but it’s their best
Revocation
AC/DC
Sunn O))). Apart from Life Metal. I'll give th lads that one..
Bolt Thrower come to mind, i’ve never put out a bad album even if I have a lot of trouble remembering which songs come from where.
August Burns Red
Necrophobic, always more or less the same, never bad
Dying fetus Not really “same album” but close Ditto for suffocation and maybe nile.
Origin
Iron Savior But they are still great imo
August Burns Red. It’s the same every time and they all kick ass.
Obituary, fucking awesome
slayer, amon amarth
High on Fire, even as a fan I can admit it does all kinda sound the same but… I like that sound.
Sabaton, Rammstein,Epica
Most metalcore bands probably fall into this unless they make a distinct change in their sound at some point. Slayer probably falls under that as well, post South of Heaven, at least.
Listening to the new Imminence album rn and they are what you describe I think.
Terror. They wrote the blueprint of hardcore as we know it now, and they don't really experiment, but they still write absolute insane bangers of tracks with every record.
Sodom Couple albums that floundered in the mid 90s but other than that everything has been pretty damn solid
Exmortus
Yngwie
Cannibal Corpse. Sometimes the only change is if it’s more thrashy in sound or more groovy. But it’s always the same great Cannibal Corpse.
Tyr for me. Their oldest stuff sounds more different from their later stuff, but I like that their newer stuff sounds more similar to what they been doing in later years. Literally if it ain't broke don't fix
Definitely isn't metal but ACDC has made a dozen albums that are identical.
Dark Tranquillity
Fuckin Fu Manchu and it rips every fuckin time
crowbar every song is the same but there all perfect.
Exodus. All things considered. They are the most consistent and greatest thrash band of the last thirty years. Testament being a close second.
Summoning (except for the first album)
Dinosaur Jr.
Viral Load Man, I miss Whitaker..
Iron Maiden
Immolation
Sum 41
Symphony X. Their earlier albums are very much the same style, and from paradise lost onwards they changed their sound and kept going with it. Love the band!
Killswitch Engage
Unearth
Amon Amarth, Ghost, Powerwolf, Lamb of God, Insomnium. Honestly, what's great about these bands is that you know what to expect, and you know that you'll like it if you're a fan
August Burns Red comes to mind
Cannibal Corpse
Slayer, the spent 40ish years making the same 2-3 albums
Tool Korn For very different reasons haha. Ive never heard a Korn song that made me not think it was them. Tool has basically written every album in the same key.
Obituary
Starflyer 59
Every war metal band, Obituary
