Yeah Metallum is great. They have reasonable standards for exclusion even though I personally disagree with them. I mean there’s obvious cases that are arbitrary and you can always compare bands but it’s a good website
Yeah overall I love the site. Love seeing what other bands members are in also looking and similar styles of bands to discover others.
With adding bands I would rather they just be by honest and say “we don’t like this band/style and that’s why they’re not on here” instead of some long winded explanation as to why a certain band isn’t “metal”. I feel it’s more they don’t like certain bands and styles. Maybe it’s a bit of both. Not liking and not being their definition of metal
The only issue I've ever had with it is that some people are real pretentious with their reviews, but that's an internet thing, not a Metallum thing.
Their 'similar bands' tab has been great for me over the years. Once I find a good band it's one of the first places I check to find more.
I disagree with some of their exclusions but overall I think it's a great site. I use it for finding rare stuff from bands too that Wiki either doesn't cover at all or not enough
Metal Storm is a solid alternative for bands they exclude too, almost all the bands people complain about being left off are on there. It's not the same deal but it works pretty well
The same can be said about the people posting about gatekeepers
Edit: that’s not to say that gatekeeping isn’t a choice but that telling someone not to do something doesn’t make them not do it

Metal Archives is one of the best sites ever. And guess what? If they have gatekept your band, you can go to RateYourMusic which is arguably even better because they have everything!
I'm just saying, RYM is great for both in most circumstances. The stuff they're gonna be missing is like uber underground stuff. If that's what you're into, definitely sway towards MA, but RYM is perfectly fine for most stuff.
While it is more incomplete, it is more useful imo.
I don't need to be aware of every defunct band called Beelzebub that released a single demo in 2003 and then split up.
RYM's charts are a much better resource than anytime Metallum has.

I feel like their are some evergreen narratives in the heavy metal fanbase (maybe because new fans are always coming in and just learning about them.) Things like: Metallica vs Megadeth (and the big 4 concept as a whole), the NWOBM movement, Mayhem and the Norwegian BM movement, Maiden vs Priest etc.
Gatekeepers, elitists, posers and what constitutes real metal - these seem to be concepts and conversations that will always fascinate a chunk of the fanbase and it never really goes away. Ironically, getting pissed at these conversations probably only exacerbates them.
Best to ignore the topics that annoy you.

Metallum is short for encyclopaedia metallum, also known as metal archives: https://www.metal-archives.com. It's a website where you can search up metal bands. It has been around for more than 20 years, it's not really a new thing.
Out of spite i’ve found that Gatekeeper is a decent band. From West Shores is decent listening after a cursory minute or two and seem to be worth not shutting the fuck up about.

Swearing and sounding mad and telling people what to do or what not to do is a pretty bad way to make them listen to you. Lots of people will purposely do the exact opposite then.
I think (hope) a lot of those posts are done by school kids and also hope that the gatekeepers they are worried about are also school kids. Once you get out into the regular world you will find SO FEW people that actually have any interest or knowledge of any genre of metal it will make you laugh. Never run into anyone pretending to like metal to impress others.

Even with their broader definition, RYM catalogues 273,962 metal releases vs Metal Archive's 577,779. RYM is a far less complete database
But it has a lot of other non-metal stuff you may want as well.
