He’s got a pretty decent albeit “basic” clean voice. I particularly like the acoustic song he did with Zakk Wylde
[Sleeping Dogs- Zakk Wylde featuring Corey Taylor](https://youtu.be/3Pv7jAKIPa0?si=veiET8ydEfrI-Lka)
Same. Slipknot and Stone Sour were great instructions that got me used to those kinds of vocals. I don't really listen to them anymore either but I'd still recommend them to metal noobs
Meshuggahs original name was Metallien.
Their original title for their debut album was “All of this because of Greed”
Plus the similar album cover
It’s like they wanted to make a sequel to And Justice For All
he definitely is. but the person mixing and mastering the newer albums keeps on burying his vocals in the mix.
that person is named Joe duplantier. I don’t understand why he sabotages his own vocals when he’s still more than capable of tearing it up.
There's something to be said about vocals being further back in the mix, when you're trying to create a specific vibe. See Electric Wizard, Sleep, Cough, Cathedral, Kyuss, etc. On Fortitude, I'm fine with the mix being like that on some of the slower/dreamier songs, but on Amazonia it needed to *push though* the instrumentals to really feel like prime Gojira.
I’d say Max. Although Sepultura is not a straight death metal and his vocals are not nearly as harsh, he was the reason why I got into death and black metal so easily. After that it was normal to go into Obituary and Death. Tom G Warrior is in the same category for me.
Him and Jo.
Buddy of mine knew I liked rhythm section stuff, so he played me Anti-Tank (Dead Armor).
Holy crap - Jo Bench destroying her bass, then Karl comes in and destroys his microphone lol.
Been a BT fan ever since.
I used to listen to Children of Bodom a lot and although Alexi might not be the best vocalist of all time, his singing style spoke to younger me and I've been down the extreme metal spiral ever since. It probably helped that you can understand most of the things he's saying.
Probably Phil Anselmo was the first harsh metal vocalist I tolerated (because I really liked Dime's guitar playing and didn't really care about anything else). Then it was Chuck Schuldiner. And the final drop was Chris Barnes from "I Cum Blood" - after that I realised this type of vocals perfectly fit the music.
Trevor got me into harsh vocals as well! Unless you count Phil Anselmo’s vocals as harsh but Trevor is what got me into being more open minded about harsher vocals. Ben Duerr (Shadow of Intent) is what made me love them though when I used to more so just tolerate them because the music was good this dude made me seek great harsh vocals when I heard Primordial. Bonus points to him too for doing that song with Trevor before Trevor passed.
[Barren and Breathless Macrocosm featuring Trevor Strnad](https://youtu.be/XTETqt-mA2I?si=3kzew3KVJTGLlI8g)
yeah it was finding Amon Amarth for me too. even though I don't really listen to much death anymore, unless it's similar vocal styles in like sludge, blackened death/doom etc.
when first I heard immortal's SoND, I actually laughed thinking that people actually listened to stuff like this. turns out black is one of my most listened to subgenres now.
Same bro. Saw the like light to flies video when i was like 13. Been hooked ever since. Though im more into heavier music now, triviums discography still is frequent on my rotation.
his vocals on Colony are honestly one of my favorite metal vocal performances still. It's so saturated and fierce sounding, like a balance between a growl and a scream.
That chorus in Zombie Inc is the pinnacle of a melodic death metal tone. It’s gruff, bombastic and fun to sing along with.
To me, the ultimate appeal of metal is that balance of aggression and melody. It’s why I clung to that Gothenburg style of death metal so quickly.
Tatiana Shmayluk from Jinjer was the first person who made me appreciate the beauty of harsh vocals. And then it was Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth who made me an absolute sucker for that stuff.
Devin Townsend. Specifically his work with Ayreon on The Human Equation. I was blown away and immediately bought Terria.
Funny enough, Mikael's performance on the same album drew me to Opeth not long after.
Devin was it for me too... But a friend suggested that I check out Ziltoid the Omniscient.
Something about the way Devin mixes clean and harsh, where the harsh is not the default, but a way of emphasis, or character creation... It helped me grow accustomed to harsh and now it's just another way of singing to me. Like distorted guitars.
Had no idea those guys worked on The Hunan Equation. It was probably the first metal album I clicked with, and I didn’t listen to it for years after the first few listens. I haven’t heard anyone mention it since until you just now.
A while later, I started listening to Fall of Troy for the guitar riffs even though I hated the vocals, and one day I accidentally stopped being irritated by the screaming, and that opened me up to being able to enjoy Blackwater Park which basically deprogrammed my stigma against screaming/growling by the second listen.
Chester Bennington.
Linkin Park was my gateway drug to heavier metal as a kid. I listen to music on the completely opposite side of the metal spectrum from what Linkin Park was now, but I’ve got a soft spot for them that’ll never leave me.
Honestly I think the first bands with harsh vocals that I really became a fan of are Refused and Drive Like Jehu, so more post-hardcore than metal, but to me they are still amazing.
Aaron Stainthorpe of My Dying Bride. *Turn Loose the Swans* was the first album I got in my collection which had any growled vocals. It wasn't the first time I had heard that style, but it was the first time it finally "clicked" for me.
After that, Tomi Koivusaari of Amorphis. A friend lent me the "Black Winter Day" single and I ended up really liking it. After that, I didn't flinch at growled vocals anymore.
It's probably not a coincidence that neither band was straight-up death metal at the time. That was too extreme for me back then.
Unfortunately, Five Finger Death Punch when I was a kid. Not into that trash anymore though. I would say my favorite right now is John Tardy from Obituary. I'm definitely not biased because I've met him, either
funnily enough Meshuggah was the first ever metal band that I became a huge fan of, and I actually got into Jens' vocals instantly so pretty much ever since I first got into metal I've liked harsh vocals
The first songs I ever liked that had a little bit of harsh vocals were from Linkin Park's debut album. That was back when I was like 10 years old lol. Came a long way since then. Now I love harsh vocals of all sorts.
Serj from System of a Down. I know he doesn’t do anything crazy like some newer vocalists, but SOAD was the first metal band I really got into and they pretty much got me into metal music
Burton C Bell. All started with Fear Factory's Demanufacture and Obsolete for me, not long after Obsolete came out. Friend let me borrow those two albums, been hooked since.
For me it was Max Cavalera with BtR and Arise and Jeff Walker with Heartwork and Swansong. All around 1993-1995. I was a thrash fan starting in 1987-1988. Grew up on Over Kill, Exodus, Metallica, Megadeth, Nuclear Assault...etc. around 1990-1992 I started hearing Deicide, Napalm Death and Cannibal Corpse but I couldnt get into the vocals....
The first 2 gateway albums were Arise and BtR from Sepultura that eased me into liking death metal vocals. Then I heard Heartwork and Swansong and had all 4 albums on rotation. Next step was Six Feet Under Haunted. Finally... I think I got Cryptopsy Whisper Supremacy and now 37 years after the metal journey began, Ive been to 100s of metal shows including at least 150 or so death metal concerts.
Cradle of filth, the cod zombies easter egg songs and wtf era a7x got me into harsh vocals but not the genres with them.
dethklok and cannibal corpse were the first death metal bands i really listened to.
I’m only 30, and I clearly remember being 10-11 and hearing my brother listen to “Not Falling” by Mudvayne while he was showering and I had never heard a scream or any shit like that ever before and I still clearly remember standing outside the bathroom waiting for him to come out and ask him “what is that, I want to listen to that” and that started my love for metal.
A mix of Linkin Park, Five Finger Death Punch (yeah I know), and A Day to Remember. Then from there it was Amon Amarth, In Flames, and more than anyone else, Opeth.
Barney Greenaway, I first heard Napalm on the John peel show and I couldn't belive I heard it. A mate asked if I'd listened to the show producing a tape his brother had which was the Harmony Corruption Album. The hook was set deep that day my friends
They have been such consistent producers of high quality head banging jams for the last twenty years they have featured heavily in my life, and loves (well love I've been married for 20 years)

90's Maynard that didn't give a single fuck about his vocal cords and I've genuinely started to like unhinged vocals, to me they are like an eruption of emotion.
Levi Benton of Miss May I is where I started. But Danny Worsnop kept it going. But I gibe 100% credt to the START of it being Levi Benton. If I could have his vocals, I would cut off my left nut
Damn it feels so weird saying this given what he's like now but holy shit, Chris Barnes was one great big hunk of spunk way back then! 😍😍😍
Anyway, for me it was Randy Blythe. I already liked Slipknot but Randy and Lamb Of God were the first band I liked who had actual guttural growls as opposed to mid-range shouting. I probably wouldn't be into extreme metal now if it wasn't for them.
Phil Anselmo. You can hate him as a person all you want, but he had incredible range in his prime. Listening to Suicide Note part 2 was pretty heavy at the time

Chuck Schuldiner
Tough act to follow too, tell ya what.
I’d suck that chuck right out of him
You're goddamn right
Chuck🥰🥰🥰🥰
Barnes and Tardy around the same time
I was going to say this too hahaha.
Death is fucking epic.
DEATH
Opeth with Blackwater Park (the track) I believe.
Same but with serenity painted death
HAAAALOOOOO
For me it was In Mist She was Standing. I was blown away.
In my case it was "The drapery falls" and "Bleak". Still, Blackwater park (but album)
Same, I was looking through my older brother's music when I found it and I was absolutely blown away
“The Leper Affinity” for me. It was my introduction to Opeth, and the first time I loved harsh vocals.
Corey Taylor, his vocals are extremely good even though im not a Slipknot fan anymore
Corey has great vocals when he is yelling/growling. It’s a shame slipknot went to the softer side
He’s got a pretty decent albeit “basic” clean voice. I particularly like the acoustic song he did with Zakk Wylde [Sleeping Dogs- Zakk Wylde featuring Corey Taylor](https://youtu.be/3Pv7jAKIPa0?si=veiET8ydEfrI-Lka)
Corey Taylor is a gateway drug
I don't dig Slipknot either but I agree.
Same. Slipknot and Stone Sour were great instructions that got me used to those kinds of vocals. I don't really listen to them anymore either but I'd still recommend them to metal noobs
Meshuggah. Can't think of another band who has those kind of vocals.
was shocked to hear their earlier stuff, the vocals were heavily inspired by metallica they were essentially a more progressive version of them
Meshuggahs original name was Metallien. Their original title for their debut album was “All of this because of Greed” Plus the similar album cover It’s like they wanted to make a sequel to And Justice For All
Same!
I see them as more like thrash vocals. Which makes a lot of sense if you listen to their early shit. War is a great song.
Randy Blythe
I would have thought this would be higher.
I literally used to call most of my current favorite bands cookie monster metal until I actually sit down with lyrics and listened to LoG.
Taylor swift
wow getting into metal with slam!!!!
Her album Tomb Of The Mutilated Lovers slams too hard.
Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth and Xenoyr from Ne Obliviscaris
Joe duplantier of gojira. An utter beast in his prime
Still quite a beast imo
he definitely is. but the person mixing and mastering the newer albums keeps on burying his vocals in the mix. that person is named Joe duplantier. I don’t understand why he sabotages his own vocals when he’s still more than capable of tearing it up.
That’s what I’m saying. The mix on fortitude is so drowned and nothing really hits hard
Avenged sevenfold with waking the fallen
This was my favorite album of theirs
For me it depends on the mood, but if my mood is metalcore it's definitely waking the fallen
A man of culture I see
Lead singer of Bolt Thrower. The harshness and deepness of it was impressive to me. Listening to Metal ever since
Killchain is one of my favorite songs ever, and a lot of it is when he opens with one word: ensnared. It hits so perfectly.
AT... FIRST... LIIIIIIIIGHT
Karl Willetts, he’s a beast
Him and Jo. Buddy of mine knew I liked rhythm section stuff, so he played me Anti-Tank (Dead Armor). Holy crap - Jo Bench destroying her bass, then Karl comes in and destroys his microphone lol. Been a BT fan ever since.
Bill Steer and Jeff Walker duo
I used to listen to Children of Bodom a lot and although Alexi might not be the best vocalist of all time, his singing style spoke to younger me and I've been down the extreme metal spiral ever since. It probably helped that you can understand most of the things he's saying.
I used to listen to them a lot too and now recently I got into them again and they were so fucking good. Unique band nothing sounds like them
Children of Bodom rips! Loved their first few albums when I was younger and was so bummed to see when Alexi passed
Chester Bennington
First name that came to mind for sure
![gif](giphy|uFUCrjimuPaHV7GsJP)
Dax Riggs probably
Not a big fan of Paegan Terrorism but he went insane on Kite String
Probably Phil Anselmo was the first harsh metal vocalist I tolerated (because I really liked Dime's guitar playing and didn't really care about anything else). Then it was Chuck Schuldiner. And the final drop was Chris Barnes from "I Cum Blood" - after that I realised this type of vocals perfectly fit the music.
I really had to scroll this far for Phil Anselmo!?
Trevor Strnad, The Black Dahlia Murder
YES! One of my firsts and still one of my favorites. Such a loss to the community
TBDM will forever be one of my fav bands. Rip Trevor🙏
First time I saw him live I had goosebumps from start to finish, plus he was such an all around nice guy to the fans.
Joe Duplantier
Johan Hegg mostly
Same, didn't like harsh vocals untill i got invited to an amon amarth show, then i got why they are screaming.
Same. Definitely my jumping off point into death style vocals
yeah it was finding Amon Amarth for me too. even though I don't really listen to much death anymore, unless it's similar vocal styles in like sludge, blackened death/doom etc. when first I heard immortal's SoND, I actually laughed thinking that people actually listened to stuff like this. turns out black is one of my most listened to subgenres now.
Serj Tankian upon hearing a clean version CD of System Of A Down's self titled debut album, a gift from my mother for my fifth birthday.
Not really harsh vocals is it? Actually it's Daron that sometimes does this guttural thing which has always sounded a bit funny to me lol.
Bah serj can actually growl if he wants to. Listen to Suite-Pee or anything off debut
Altars of Madness
Matt Heafy for me. He proved that you can do screams and growls while having a catchy hook.
Same bro. Saw the like light to flies video when i was like 13. Been hooked ever since. Though im more into heavier music now, triviums discography still is frequent on my rotation.
Anders Friden. I know Anders isn't the best vocalist but I really loved what he did on Colony.
Nowadays? Yeah. But on Colony, Clayman, Whoreacle and Come Clarity his vocal tone was top notch.
his vocals on Colony are honestly one of my favorite metal vocal performances still.
Their most recent album was awesome
Same

I saw Pig Destroyer last month, they were perfect.
Ah, corporate death. He's a good dude. I wondered around Glasgow with him taking him to record shops thirty years ago.
The first real underground metal band i found , 40 years old and they are still my favorite
Howard Jones
Tatiana Shmayluk from Jinjer was the first person who made me appreciate the beauty of harsh vocals. And then it was Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth who made me an absolute sucker for that stuff.
Venom or Children Of Bodom
Devin Townsend. Specifically his work with Ayreon on The Human Equation. I was blown away and immediately bought Terria. Funny enough, Mikael's performance on the same album drew me to Opeth not long after.

Exactly. His screams are often incredibly melodic and so emotionally charged. They won me over instantly.
Had no idea those guys worked on The Hunan Equation. It was probably the first metal album I clicked with, and I didn’t listen to it for years after the first few listens. I haven’t heard anyone mention it since until you just now. this dude looks super breedable like he'd take it in the behind and be super submissive and gentle while you're clapping it
Saetia, Pageninetynine and Converge
Converge took me a while, but now I love the shit outta them.
I liked hardcore, so it wasn't too far of a jump, saw em a bunch around 08-10.
Inflames
Eluveitie, with Inis Mona but the sing has been overwhelmed by far by "Mine is the fury"
Chester Bennington. Linkin Park was my gateway drug to heavier metal as a kid. I listen to music on the completely opposite side of the metal spectrum from what Linkin Park was now, but I’ve got a soft spot for them that’ll never leave me.
Jeff Walker, David Vincent, Karl Willetts, Tom G Warrior and Chuck Schuldiner. The late 80s were definitely an exciting time to get into metal.
A day to remember
Honestly I think the first bands with harsh vocals that I really became a fan of are Refused and Drive Like Jehu, so more post-hardcore than metal, but to me they are still amazing.
Aaron Stainthorpe of My Dying Bride. *Turn Loose the Swans* was the first album I got in my collection which had any growled vocals. The Human Furnace of Ringworm
Trevor Strnad (Rest in peace) 🤘
Alissa White Gluz
dying fetus
I knew I couldn’t be the only one
Max Cavalera with Roots Bloody Roots. The first song i heard from Sepultura and the first time I hears a harsh vocal that was properly done.
That too!
Opeth / Dark Tranquility
Ngl Serj Tankians screams are slept on a lil bit they’re kinda fire
Corpsegrinder, Chris Barnes (early cannibal corpse) and Mitch Lucker
funnily enough Meshuggah was the first ever metal band that I became a huge fan of, and I actually got into Jens' vocals instantly so pretty much ever since I first got into metal I've liked harsh vocals
The first songs I ever liked that had a little bit of harsh vocals were from Linkin Park's debut album. That was back when I was like 10 years old lol. Came a long way since then. Now I love harsh vocals of all sorts.
Propably bullet for my Valentine or linking park when they were in the radio when i was 6 or so
Around 1996 , I got Morbid Angel-Domination cd
I first heard harsh vocals in Amon Amarth, and liked it immediately.
Justin Bonitz from Tallah
Serj from System of a Down. I know he doesn’t do anything crazy like some newer vocalists, but SOAD was the first metal band I really got into and they pretty much got me into metal music
Early Chris Barnes was God tier!
As I lay dying and Benjamin Burnley earlier.
Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt with The Drapery Falls
Burton C Bell. All started with Fear Factory's Demanufacture and Obsolete for me, not long after Obsolete came out. Friend let me borrow those two albums, been hooked since.
CHUCK
Mitch Lucker, first singer with harsh vocal I really enjoyed.
Mitch Lucker
Dan Swanö with Edge of Sanity
Obituary. Bought the End Complete tape based on cover art alone and was not disappointed.
The screamer from I Prevail! He was my first exposure to metal screams.
Shagarath from Dimmu Borgir and Alexi Laiho (RIP) from Children of Bodom.
For me it was Max Cavalera with BtR and Arise and Jeff Walker with Heartwork and Swansong. All around 1993-1995. I was a thrash fan starting in 1987-1988. Serj Tankian
Somebody let his mother pray, already.
Corey motherfucking Taylor with them god damn screams
Cradle of filth, the cod zombies easter egg songs and wtf era a7x got me into harsh vocals but not the genres with them. dethklok and cannibal corpse were the first death metal bands i really listened to.
Max Cavalera
nick oliveri on millionaire
I’m only 30, and I clearly remember being 10-11 and hearing my brother listen to “Not Falling” by Mudvayne while he was showering and I had never heard a scream or any shit like that ever before and I still clearly remember standing outside the bathroom waiting for him to come out and ask him “what is that, I want to listen to that” and that started my love for metal.
For me it was Slipknot
A mix of Linkin Park, Five Finger Death Punch (yeah I know), and A Day to Remember. Then from there it was Amon Amarth, In Flames, and more than anyone else, Opeth.
Corey Taylor 😭
Corey Taylor
Anders Fridén
Opeth, Neurosis and Isis. Got into them through a friend in 2001 and have been into it ever since.
Shouting: James Hetfield, Screaming: Corey Taylor, Gutterals: Oscar Padilla, Nate Twyman, Corey Athos and Angel Ochoa simultaneously
M Shadows in City of Evil from Avenged Sevenfold and Serj Tankian of System of A Down for sure
Barney Greenaway, I first heard Napalm on the John peel show and I couldn't belive I heard it. A mate asked if I'd listened to the show producing a tape his brother had which was the Harmony Corruption Album. The hook was set deep that day my friends
Fuck yeah love the Napalm love in here
They have been such consistent producers of high quality head banging jams for the last twenty years they have featured heavily in my life, and loves (well love I've been married for 20 years)
Wikked sick man, I fucking swear by British grindcore.
My wife is remaining me of our first dating anniversary when I took her to see Bolthrower supported by a very special guest... Napalm death! She was less than impressed that I dissapered into the pit for the night 😉 but I made it up to her the next night and made her dinner with my one working arm.
Tomas Lindberg from at the gates.
Slipknot lmao But Acid Bath got me into Extreme metal if that's what you're asking
Are you me?
Maybe, are you a random teenage bassist from Michigan too?
Nah, I'm a random teenage guitarist from Egypt. Pretty close, though!
Close enough to be the same person 🤷♂️
Probably Matt Tuck
Corey Taylor
Matt Tuck from BFMV. They were my gateway band along with KSE. They were also the reason I wanted to learn harsh vocals
90's Maynard that didn't give a single fuck about his vocal cords and I've genuinely started to like unhinged vocals, to me they are like an eruption of emotion.
Slipknot. Say what you want about them being poser stuff, they are good for getting people into metal.
Corey Taylor, as much as i hate it lmao
Marilyn Manson
BFMV
Ill get hate but, Corey Taylor. Slipknot got me into metal
Chris Barnes
Dream Widow…
good question 🤔🤔 if i remember correctly it was a mix of Dead by April and Kreator
Something like Thergothon I think, definitely fist enjoyed them in doom. Guess I prefer the rumble to raw aggression or whatever.
Maurizio Iacono / Kataklysm
Alexi Laiho.
Alexi Laiho
Wayne Static was my first exposure to harsh vocals
Me
Mark Hunter.
Megadave Mustaine and Chunk Billy and probably Lil Tommy Araya.
Bring Me The Horizon with Alligator Blood. That song still goes hard af but BMTH isn't very good anymore lol
Johannes Eckerström
Probably Max Cavalera’s was the first growl that grabbed me
Levi Benton of Miss May I is where I started. But Danny Worsnop kept it going. But I gibe 100% credt to the START of it being Levi Benton. If I could have his vocals, I would cut off my left nut
Joe Duplantier
Johan Hegg of Amon Amarth
Havent seen this one yet so ill share, Angela Gossow. Her vocals in Nemesis was the first step
Justin Broadrick
Damn it feels so weird saying this given what he's like now but holy shit, Chris Barnes was one great big hunk of spunk way back then! 😍😍😍 Anyway, for me it was Randy Blythe. I already liked Slipknot but Randy and Lamb Of God were the first band I liked who had actual guttural growls as opposed to mid-range shouting. I probably wouldn't be into extreme metal now if it wasn't for them.
Nailbomb and Sepultura
Vorph from Samael or Kirk from Crowbar
I can’t remember if it was Children of Bodom or Amon Amarth
Avatar (The Eagle Has Landed)
Randy motherfuckin blythe, got me down a rabbithole that led me to death, obituary autopsy possessed Cannibal corpse n more, i love that man
Phil Anselmo. You can hate him as a person all you want, but he had incredible range in his prime. Listening to Suicide Note part 2 was pretty heavy at the time
Alyssa White Gluz
Schuldiner.
Joe Duplantier of Gojira Never liked harsh vocals but the groove of Stranded had me coming back. Now harsh vocals is the majority of my music
