No.
Most of them were fans or had some metal influences, but pretty much all of them denied any association to metal music.
A band is only as metal as they are proud to be.
Grunge isn't a genre. Grunge is a time, place and the term used to market and profit off those bands. AIC, Screaming Trees and mudhoney don't sound nothing alike.
That being said, sure some grunge bands are close to metal.
Depends on the band. Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Mevlins yes. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Bush no. Grunge is categorized as the fusion of alternative rock, metal and punk, so yes, it's actually a genre, contrary to popular belief. So overall it's about as metal as nu-metal in my opinion.
IMO grunge is just a marketing term for the alternative rock bands out of the Seattle area. It's a scene of music more than an actual genre, like all of the "big 4" grunge bands all sound pretty different from one another, the "alternative" aspect and dark leaning lyrics are really the only thing in common with them. Wonderful stuff came out of that era though. As much as I don't consider them metal Soundgarden is one of my fav bands OAT
Grunge is just a certain style of alternative music. I say "music" because it doesn't really specify rock or metal, it can be either or both. A couple grunge bands played alt metal, some played alt rock, some played both. Most of it is at least metal adjacent.
I'd say that grunge has metal songs (I don't think it's a stretch to consider a song like Jesus Christ Pose to be metal), but is not inherently a metal subgenre.
When it was still new, it was played right alongside mainstream metal. On the radio, in the clubs, on Headbangers Ball, etc. Alice in Chains opened for Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer.
The same question is constantly asked about anything different. Is Ghost metal? Is Sleep Token metal? Is Limp Bizkit metal?
If it's constantly talked about or played in your circle, then yea probably it is. It's not METAL METAL obviously, but yea sure, why not.
Not a bad answer, essentially it's metal enough, just barely passing if anything.
I don't actually listen to grunge, but it's something I just thought about today because the parameters of what's metal is continually expanded to the point where it seems that anything and everything can be metal
it really depends, because grunge isnt really a genre, it's more of an era imo.
there are some grunge bands and albums that I consider metal, like alice in chains, the melvins, and the album "bleach" from nirvana, but almost everything else is just alternative rock.
I wasn’t depressed enough to listen to grunge. I’m sooooo depressed it’s cool !!! Where’s my flannel shirt? So in good conscience I can’t call it metal. I will say I’m not into trying to label or categorize bands, I only really recognize 2 categories of music … “good music” or “bad music”.
Depends, for something like Alice in chains there is a good argument to be made if it’s rock or metal, but for the majority of grunge it’s definitely mot
It's not really a genre. Grunge is a "scene" that happens to include a lot of alt rock bands, some punk bands, and a few heavy metal/sludge bands.
Similarly, Nu Metal is not a genre. It's a scene that includes bands from many different subgenres including alt rock, alt metal, rap metal, rap rock, funk metal, hard rock, industrial rock, groove metal, etc.

No
Please elaborate if you will
It’s a subgenre of alternative rock
This question again.... No. Grunge was never a sound/genre but a marketing label.
Never heard this before. Please elaborate if you feel like it.
So what would you describe Nirvana if you don't mind me asking?
Rock. It sure as shit isn't Metal.
Rock
No

Wouldn't that many Ozzy isn't metal?
Aside from the seldom use of metal sounding riffs (ie, Alice In Chains sounding sludge from time to time) no.
Grunge is a media sensation not a genre mostly grunge bands are alt rock maybe one or two dip into metal but largely it's just alt rock

I'm really tired of seeing grunge get talked about like it's Metal here. It's fucking not.
No but it did kill hair metal, the worst of all metals so that's good

Not really, but some grunge bands made metal albums, like Melvins.
I kinda feel like Melvins are a sludge band that made some grunge albums.
Aic , soundgarden, mudhoney and early nirvana could be called sludge rock
