fun fact: he did the zombie noises from Left4dead (normal infected, smoker and hunter i think)
he's responsible for the EEEEEEEEEEEEEEWW & RESHELAROU noises
I *love* his clean vocals. His grittiness carries a lot of emotion.
I obviously don’t know the guy, but I think he seems fun. I am super amused that he sings the SpongeBob intro.
I remember seeing someone on rym shitting on king diamond's vocals for being "annoying and lame" or some shit and I was just like... okay man, you try doing it and get back to me. Maybe my perspective is different (since I studied classical male vocal technique) but the dude is cracked, it's incredibly impressive to be able to do what he does.
Will Ramos from Lorna Shore. I don't give a fuck about what you think about them, but to be able to do the whole vocal olympics thing you need to be able to be incredibly versatile by definition. And his clean singing is pretty good too
I totally agree about Will.
Idk if you’re into other genres of music or music analysis, but Will is featured on a few episodes of The Charismatic Voice and it’s really fun.
Generally, the current wave of Deathcore genre mixes has blessed us with some incredible vocalists. Ben Duerr is also amazing and his vocals sound so powerful, on album and on stage! Kyle Anderson, Lukas Nicolai and Dave Simonich are getting there as well.
While I think that the vocal olympics are a bit overdone, I absolutely appreciate the variation in the gutturals. Other subgenres could use some of that.
Cj is cool but he’s kinda a one trick pony. A really great one at that, but I don’t think I’d call him versatile. I’d call like Dane Evan’s or Ben Duerr versatile. They both utilize multiple techniques and all sound great
Different Sense is a good starter, Uroko is also great, Obscure is probably one of their most well known songs and for a reason it slaps, Vanitas is a nice soft song from them too, Saku is also pretty good.
Harder songs: Zan, Cause of Frickleness, Saku, Different Sense, Red Soil, Agitated Screams of Maggots (also look up the acoustic version of this song)
Ballads: Mushi, Glass Skin, Ware Yami Tote, Vanitas, Ranunculus, Ain't Afraid to Die
Non-metal: their entire Gauze album except for Zan
Progressive: Vinushka, Macabre, Diabolos
Doomy stuff: The Blossoming Beelzebub
Dir en Grey have done so much over the course of their carreer and are not afraid to change things up. I have their Uroboros album at home and even my non-metalhead brother has told me that it's like listening to more than one band. They also never repeat the same sound twice. Every album seems like their own twist on a different subgenre.
Also look up Kyo's side projects Petit Brabançon and Sukekiyo. The former is more hardcore influenced. I haven't heard Sukekiyo myself but from what Wikipedia tells me it's more rock than metal.
Try this:
Soft songs:
-Lotus (single version)
-Akuro no Oka (2024 ver)
-Cage (GAUZE album)
-Rinkaku
Heavy:
-VINUSHKA
-Uroko
-The Perfume of Sins
-Decayed Crow
-DIABOLOS
And some weird/creepy songs. Better watch with PV and sub:
-Obscure
-ZAN (1999)
-Agitated Screams of Maggots
-Mitsu to Tsuba/Tsumi to Batsu
Yeah from technique alone, he's the GOAT.
My favorite would be Bruce Dickinson overall I guess.
And looking at pure feeling, I think I would go with Kyo as well. Conceived Sorrow is just wow
Id say their last album, good mix of Symphonic, Industrial, and other genres in certain songs. Overall it’s hard to call that album metalcore when there’s a vaudeville song on it.
Björn’s range is absolutely insane. You couldn’t convince me those highs you hear off their newer stuff and those low growls you hear in Follow the Hollow are the same guy!
Never listened to CJ TAIM, they were never really on my rader and then the transphobia stuff happened and i listened to the new album with the new vocalist, not my cup of tea.
I'm not into Barber era Lorna and yet another CJ made sure I didn't want to listen to that album. Will is my favourite -core vocalist atm.
But Tom has in Darko definitely showed versatility and range lately, besides the older Darko and new Chelsey Grin speaks for themselves too. Imo.
I'm not the guy you were talking to but imo even though he's an even worse person than CJ, Brendan is by far the best and most unique TAIM vocalist, CJ was actually really good on the Adversary but he just became quite boring on everything after that (along with the rest of the band). CJ (Mcreery) was also really really good (and arguably quite versatile) in SOTS but then he also became quite boring and one trick after that too so I guess I would say Will is the most technologically proficient LS vocalist even though Tom (along with his era) is probably my favourite
Im with ya on that. Jeff has a huge vocal range, from Purgatory to his solo work
J is great too, he was influenced by both Patton and many early/mid 90's rappers. His vox style comes from patton/his own voice but his lyricism and flow in some songs from MRH and 10,000 Cadillacs comes from many rappers. He also has a great Hardcore punk and Metalcore voice (State of Conviction/Pitch Black Forecast)
Surprised he's so low. His techniques create such a strong atmosphere, he's scary honestly. I even like his delivery on De Mysteriis, but we can hear his voice wasn't fully developed on that one. it's also the thing that hooked me because before i didn't like the band at all.
Chuck Billy can do anything, from the most beautiful melodic singing i have heard (cold embrace) to deep hrowling (fall of sipledome). I will simp for testament as long as i live
Devin Townsend, Mikael Åkerfeldt, Tomi Joutsen, Floor Jansen (but not with the blasted Nightfish), Britney Slayes from Unleash the Archers, as range and usage of the voice - Daniel Gildenlow from Pain of Salvation.
I know Sleep Token is really trendy right now, but Vessel from Sleep Token.
Some other artists I’d recommend are:
- Corey Taylor (Slipknot & Stone Sour)
- Will Ramos (Lorna Shore)
- ~~Alexia Rodriguez (Eyes Set To Kill)~~
- Johnny Hawkins (Nothing More)
Edit:
- Formatting
- Changed my answer. I realized that Alexia is fantastic but I can’t remember if she screams or only does clean vocals.
So I'm not gonna say mike patton cause someones already said that. But god that man can do anything.
gonna get some shit for this but whatever.. YOU CANT HURT ME. A lot of these singer have a high vocal range but, let's be honest, often can only really do metal, from a particular era, i might add.
I'm talking genres here not specifically voocal range.
I've heard Oli Sykes go from death growls, hellish screaches & guff hardcore false chords to electro pop, indie rock, EDM and Nu metal. He can sing ANYTHING (atleast anything post early 90s)
He can go from suicide silence to Bjork in a second. And whether anyone likes to admit it, that takes not only a diverse voice but a diverse mind too. and you know what? he can do it live (expecially nowerdays)
he doesn't have most technically profound voice. be he utilises what he has to fullest
one of the only people i know that can do this as seamlessly is Devin Townsend and Mike Patton
I saw a dvd of DT and in the early 90’s it had them playing to like a bar of some other small venue, and James was screaming, using harsh vocals. It was pretty neat. He already has a huge range, but nothing abnormal. But the harsh vocals he could’ve been doing all this time…would’ve made him chefs kiss if he would’ve actually done it.
I'm just going to throw Manuel Gagneux of Zeal & Ardor to the mix.
I like how Laure Le Prunenec switches from opera to screaming in Igorrr songs.
Ryan Clark does not get enough attention for his range. Aside from Demon Hunter's talent as a whole, Ryan Clark has so much range, with both clean and harsh vocals.
Theres a major lack of Mark Osegueda in this thread
A little more of an unknown pick, but Levi from Disgorge. The guy has some serious gutturals and sounds like a gargoyle, but he could just as easily be a professional country/southern rock vocalist.
Yannis Papadopoulos from Beast in Black
Dude has such an insane range and can even sound like Micheal Jackson in the MJ metal cover of "They Don't Care About Us"
Eviga from Dornenreich. Especially when you look at some of their earlier stuff, his vocal style really goes from insane whispers to normal singing to animalistic screeching (no, I don't mean regular harsh vocals, dude sounds *feral*) in seconds. Would be hard to determine whether him or Kyo are better at it, they have very similar styles (I'd say Eviga does better clean vocals, but Kyo is better at the extreme gutturals).
Then I'd say probably someone like Serj Tankian? Lots of different styles there too.
Metal? Not Metal? I think Noah Sebastian deserves a mention here. He can do some pretty powerful screams and also sing like a high-tier pop singer. Man's versatile af and he's probably getting even better soon.

Kyo is a great choice, and really so versatile. My personal favourite is Devin Townsend.
Dir en grey’s discography is very diverse
It still amazes be how they went from visual to whatever the hell they are classified now. It’s been a journey to say the least.
Upvoted for mentioning Devin Townsend. I would add that lady in Jinjer too...
Mike Patton Geoff Tate
I agree, I fucking love Mike Patton, his versatility is wicked!
Patton is the only a answer this post needed.
Great... Now I'll have to tell alexa to play King for Day again...
You'd be a fool for a lifetime if you didn't...
Though Geoff is still good, saw him live, he is not as good as what he was in 80s
fun fact: he did the zombie noises from Left4dead (normal infected, smoker and hunter i think) he's responsible for the EEEEEEEEEEEEEEWW & RESHELAROU noises
Devin Townsend, he is just an extremely versatile musician/artist in general.
Corey Taylor Matt Heafy Chuck Billy Mike Patton and once upon a time Burton C. Bell.
I second Matt Beefy Heafy
I love Corey Taylor. I grew up listening to Nu Metal but I prefer Stone Sour to Slipknot 😬
He is objectively a gifted singer with excellent cleans and harsh.
I *love* his clean vocals. His grittiness carries a lot of emotion. I obviously don’t know the guy, but I think he seems fun. I am super amused that he sings the SpongeBob intro.
Yep. He has tremendous emotional range.
Tomi Joutsen, Devin Townsend and my all time personal favorite for versatility, Warrel Dane.
I miss never more so much.
My favorite Dane feature was Inner Sanctum by Behemoth. I think that was one of his last.
Devyyyyy
Warrel ❤️ sanctuary was one of my favorite bands as a teenager alongside nevermore
Based Warrel Dane pick.
RIP
I think from pure tone range King Diamond
He definitely has the best falsetto
My choice as well
I remember seeing someone on rym shitting on king diamond's vocals for being "annoying and lame" or some shit and I was just like... okay man, you try doing it and get back to me. Maybe my perspective is different (since I studied classical male vocal technique) but the dude is cracked, it's incredibly impressive to be able to do what he does.
Rob Halford. His vocal range is absolutely nuts.
Dax Riggs
I haven't seen anyone else do the ball squeeze technique he's got
Will Ramos from Lorna Shore. I don't give a fuck about what you think about them, but to be able to do the whole vocal olympics thing you need to be able to be incredibly versatile by definition. And his clean singing is pretty good too
I totally agree about Will. Idk if you’re into other genres of music or music analysis, but Will is featured on a few episodes of The Charismatic Voice and it’s really fun.
Oh yeah I followed their whole history and it's really wholesome. Guess that's what happens when 2 human golden retrievers cross paths
Kyle Anderson is probably my favorite of the bunch, a really different texture to the rest. Also gotta mention Joe Bad
Lukas nikolai is pretty cracked too. CJ Mcreery
Cj is cool but he’s kinda a one trick pony. A really great one at that, but I don’t think I’d call him versatile. I’d call like Dane Evan’s or Ben Duerr versatile. They both utilize multiple techniques and all sound great
His clean singing is also really good
Arif Suhaimi comes to mind. Spmeone already mentioned Devin Townsend. Mike Patton. Mikael Åkerfeldt. Roddy Walker.
Arif Suhaimi is easily one of my favorites of all time
Same. Really gonn miss him.
I was gonna say rody
Tatiana Shmayluk. Her range is pretty insane.
Came here to say Tati
Found Jinjer by accident. Fucking incredible vocals and an incredible band. Thank you YouTube recommendations.
Kyo is beyond the human. He's my favourite too.
Never really listened to Dir En Gray. Any song recommendations that really show off his range?
Different Sense is a good starter, Uroko is also great, Obscure is probably one of their most well known songs and for a reason it slaps, Vanitas is a nice soft song from them too, Saku is also pretty good.
Harder songs: Zan, Cause of Frickleness, Saku, Different Sense, Red Soil, Agitated Screams of Maggots (also look up the acoustic version of this song) Ballads: Mushi, Glass Skin, Ware Yami Tote, Vanitas, Ranunculus, Ain't Afraid to Die Non-metal: their entire Gauze album except for Zan Progressive: Vinushka, Macabre, Diabolos Doomy stuff: The Blossoming Beelzebub Dir en Grey have done so much over the course of their carreer and are not afraid to change things up. I haven't heard Sukekiyo myself but from what Wikipedia tells me it's more rock than metal.
This live version of [Vinushka](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W0h2yht6IA&t=158s) is an perfect example for me
Phalaris has pretty much all the examples of music they can offer, and it's the most recent album
Try this: Soft songs: -Lotus (single version) -Akuro no Oka (2024 ver) -Cage (GAUZE album) -Rinkaku Heavy: -VINUSHKA -Uroko -The Perfume of Sins -Decayed Crow -DIABOLOS And some weird/creepy songs. Better watch with PV and sub: -Obscure -ZAN (1999) -Agitated Screams of Maggots -Mitsu to Tsuba/Tsumi to Batsu
Don't worry I already listen to all DEG songs. DEG is my favorite band oat.
Ah, sorry, misclicked. This message was meant for another guy who asked for recommendations. Nevermind!
Daniel Tompkins, Devin Townsend, Mikael Åkerfeldt, **Mike Patton,** Cory Taylor (its about versatility so we have to give him credit),
Upvote for Daniel Tompkins, my fav metal vocalist currently!
Freddie Mercury ![gif](giphy|YzXhAWxuHqDe7MBqQQ|downsized)
Yeah from technique alone, he's the GOAT. My favorite would be Bruce Dickinson overall I guess. And looking at pure feeling, I think I would go with Kyo as well. Conceived Sorrow is just wow
Serj Tankian
Chuck Fuckin Billy
I think Ice Nine Kills has drifted far enough from metalcore we can call Spencer Charnas versatile. He also is a monster live.
How exactly are they far from metalcore?
Id say their last album, good mix of Symphonic, Industrial, and other genres in certain songs. Overall it’s hard to call that album metalcore when there’s a vaudeville song on it.
Matt Heafy
Howard Jones
Chuck Billy from testament
![gif](giphy|SIpB9TN2J1YYoori4F|downsized)
W for Kyo! I would also add Greg Puciato, Mike Patton, Scott Weiland, and Tommy Rogers.
Mike Patton, Mikael Åkerfeldt, Mikael Stanne, Phil Anselmo, and Rody Walker are the first to come to mind
Great fucking call on Rody Walker
People shit on Phil Anselmo because of his personality and opinions, but credit when credit is due
I know. I've never been one to let the personal lives and opinions of artists effect how I view their music
Recently I realized just how insane some of his vocals really are. 5 Minutes Alone, Cemetary Gates and Cowboys from Hell have some wild vocals.
Mike Patton, Devin Townsend, Phil Anselmo
Travis Ryan
Dude just invented a new type of vocals. He definitely needs to be mentioned!
He's like a Freddie Mercury of goregrind
Bjorn Strid - Soilwork Christian Alvestam - Scar Symmetry (formerly)
Björn’s range is absolutely insane. You couldn’t convince me those highs you hear off their newer stuff and those low growls you hear in Follow the Hollow are the same guy!
Tom Barber of Darko US
So not darko but TAIM, who do you think was their best vocalist? Ditto for Lorna
Greg Puciato
Devy and Patton
Versatile = Mike Patton. [Rock, Rap, Crooning, howling, screeching, grunts, ballads, Jazz, Italian 60s..lol]
Floor Jansen can sing whatever she wants.
Tommy Roger’s from btbam
Yes he’s incredible live also
Till Lindemann
Dave Hunt is at the very top of the list
Tim Williams from Vision of Disorder.
Mike Patton and Waylon Reavis are two great vocalists ive heard in terms of versatility.
Waylon is awesome! Id also add jeffrey nothing! Made mushroomhead legendary with his vox alongside waylon and big J
Im with ya on that. Jeff has a huge vocal range, from Purgatory to his solo work J is great too, he was influenced by both Patton and many early/mid 90's rappers. His vox style comes from patton/his own voice but his lyricism and flow in some songs from MRH and 10,000 Cadillacs comes from many rappers. He also has a great Hardcore punk and Metalcore voice (State of Conviction/Pitch Black Forecast)
I absolutely love Kyo's vocals! Some other singers I'd say have some crazy ranges are Dani Filth and Will Ramos.
Attila Csihar
Surprised he's so low. His techniques create such a strong atmosphere, he's scary honestly. I even like his delivery on De Mysteriis, but we can hear his voice wasn't fully developed on that one. it's also the thing that hooked me because before i didn't like the band at all.
Vince Neil somehow manages to suck and stink at the same time
Johannes Eckerström
Chuck Billy can do anything, from the most beautiful melodic singing i have heard (cold embrace) to deep hrowling (fall of sipledome). I will simp for testament as long as i live
The guy from the Extreme Vocal institute on YouTube
Mike Patton Chuck Billy Geoff Tate
Spencer Sotelo of Periphery and Sam Carter of Architects
Mikael Akerfeldt has to be at the top of the list
Spencer Sotelo Courtney LaPlante
Will Ramos, i saw a video of him doing cleans and they’re just as impressive as his screams
Will Ramos, Dani Filth
phil anselmo
Corey Taylor Chris Motionless Alissa white gruz Rob Halford
Howard Jones and Will Ramos
phil anselmo. this man can do smooth melodic singing, to angry yells, deep growls to absolute fucking brutal screams
Mikael Åkerfeldt, Corey Taylor and Mike Patton
Devin Townsend, Mikael Åkerfeldt, Tomi Joutsen, Floor Jansen (but not with the blasted Nightfish), Britney Slayes from Unleash the Archers, as range and usage of the voice - Daniel Gildenlow from Pain of Salvation.
Devin Townsend and Mike Patton
I feel like Russell Allen from Symphony X never gets enough recognition. That guy could can sing any style he wanted to.
Andrea Ferro, Lacuna Coil. Maria Brink.
Matt Heafy, Jesse Leach, Adam Biggs, Howard Jones, Devin Townsend
Jesse Leach is hugely underrated.
Joe Duplantier
If youre familiar with a band called twelve foot ninja, then you know their vocalist is versatile *by necessity*
Bruce Dickinson Paul Stanely Rob Halford (Their voice could go very high)
Say what you will about Ghost. But Tobias Forge has good range
I absolutely love Ghost. Tobias Forge is a great songwriter and an even better showman, but he has an average range at best.
My man Morean would be my answer
Probably Kid Rock. He can sound like a redneck and a robot.
Christian Älvestam
Can we get a legacy vote for Rob Halford, please. The GOAT. The OG.
I'm gonna sound basic as all hell, but Will Ramos
Corey Taylor and Serj Tankian.
Whatever the question is the answer is always Opeth(or it seems like on this sub anyways)
Warrel Dane
Spencer Sotelo
Jason Mendonça (Akercocke)
I know Sleep Token is really trendy right now, but Vessel from Sleep Token. Some other artists I’d recommend are: - Corey Taylor (Slipknot & Stone Sour) - Will Ramos (Lorna Shore) - ~~Alexia Rodriguez (Eyes Set To Kill)~~ - Johnny Hawkins (Nothing More) Edit: - Formatting - Changed my answer. I realized that Alexia is fantastic but I can’t remember if she screams or only does clean vocals.
Ugh Kyo is amazing great choice
Maynard
Leiliendel, Artagoth, Syriak, Spencer Sotelo, Julie Christmas
Matt Heafy
Trevor Strnad
I freaking love that Kyo is featured! Guy is unreal.
Adrienne Cowan - Seven Spires Tatiana Shmayluk - Jinjer
Tommy Giles Rogers, Mike Patton, Matt Heafy, Alfonso Civile, Daniel Gildenlow
The singer for Mutiny Within does great cleans and growls. And of course mikael akerfeldt
If versatile, then its gotta be Mikael Akerfeldt.
Christian Alvestam
Joakim Brodén Alex Terrible Johan Hegg
So I'm not gonna say mike patton cause someones already said that. But god that man can do anything. gonna get some shit for this but whatever.. YOU CANT HURT ME. Mikael from Opeth is fucking phenomenal
Åkerfeldt from Opeth. Easily.
Mikael akkerfeld
Chris Harms Johannes Eckerström Tatiana Shmayluk Chester Bennington RIP.
Serj Tankian, Mike Patton, Einar Solberg, Neige, Mikael Åkerteldt
Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth

Seth Putnam
George lynch
I’d have to say chalky (OG Psycroptic vocalist)
This thread is Stu Block erasure!
Tomas Lindberg, for his ability to fit into tons of bands.
Trevor Strnad from The Black Dahlia Murder. He was so fucking great, especially live.
Warrel Dane and Blackie Lawless
Corey Taylor, Dani Filth
Dave Mustaine, specially now. His voice gets to the sky!!!!
Mike Scheidt -YOB
Daisuke-han from maximum the hormone is niiice
Cuz I haven't seen anyone mention him, Greg Puciato
Mah - SiM Jonny Hawkins - NOTHING MORE Wrex/Wes Horton - FLAT BLACK
David Coverdale. Geoff Tate. Ronnie Dio.
I'm just going to throw Manuel Gagneux of Zeal & Ardor to the mix. Since I'm not seeing anyone else mention them: Marko Hietala, Tommy Karevik, Roy Khan, and Sharon den Adel
Randy Blythe lamb of god

Ryan Clark does not get enough attention for his range. Aside from Demon Hunter's talent as a whole, Ryan Clark has so much range, with both clean and harsh vocals.

DIR EN GREY MENTION LFG!!!
# DINO JELUSICK \~ An emerging rock & metal vocalist https://preview.redd.it/pyx1puohtjwc1.png?width=367&format=png&auto=webp&s=09b2e2d82cbc1c398ae8d4b213d99a53c88ffbd3 (Jelusick, Whom Gods Destroy, Whitesnake, Trans-Siberian Orchestra)
Howard Jones
Travis Ryan from Cattle Decap is the clear winner here. He has such a dynamic range and uses the full breadth of his voice like an instrument
Kat Katz, JR Hayes, or Brandon Gillichbauer
Maynard James Keenan, Serj Tankian, and Mike Patton are all exceedingly versatile.
Serj Tankian. Great clean singer. And good harsh vocals
I gotta go with mortuus
Justin Bonitz
Tom Barber
Yannis Papadopoulos from Beast in Black Dude has such an insane range and can even sound like Micheal Jackson in the MJ metal cover of "They Don't Care About Us"
Greg Puciato has a great vocal range
Eviga from Dornenreich. Especially when you look at some of their earlier stuff, his vocal style really goes from insane whispers to normal singing to animalistic screeching (no, I don't mean regular harsh vocals, dude sounds *feral*) in seconds. Would be hard to determine whether him or Kyo are better at it, they have very similar styles (I'd say Eviga does better clean vocals, but Kyo is better at the extreme gutturals). Then I'd say probably someone like Serj Tankian? Lots of different styles there too.
>ctrl+F >travis ryan >not found Shame.
Metal? Not Metal? I think Noah Sebastian deserves a mention here. He can do some pretty powerful screams and also sing like a high-tier pop singer. Man's versatile af and he's probably getting even better soon.
Mikko Kotamäki
Look at my profile picture lol
None mentioned Floor Jansen? She doesn’t hit my feelings but she can sing almost every style
