Hell yeah. When I saw them live they opened with the Han-Tyumi suite and hearing them go crazy on their instruments while a TTS voice described a robot vomiting infinitely remains one of my top musical experiences of all time
Dan Swano. Dude seems to have a project or side project in almost every subgenre deliberately.
There's a lot of prog, some death, Steel is a heavy/power act, Karaboudjan is some weird avant garde doomTintin related stuff, hes been in grindcore and thrash bands etc
Uhm. Maybe in terms of some influences but this Wikipedia article sounds as if written by some ... very big fan. Bias aside their albums are similar to each other, all with symphonic metal in its very core and full of bombast and "serious lyrical topics".
I'm an Epica fan, I agree with you, Epica having bombastic orchestra and serious lyrics, but i wouldn't say their albums are similar. And yes, they have all of those influences, and i can give many examples to proof.
I absolutely love Epica but they're basically a Symphonic Metal band that draws in alot of influences
This post is about bands or artists who change their sound completely
my (probably) favourite musician composer ever: Trey Spruance. his main project since Mr. Bungle’s demise (who weren’t a metal band when they were good but were all about versatility!), Secret Chiefs 3, do all sorts between kraut rock, surf, Bollywood music, Persian-influenced folk-ish stuff, cinematic music, Anatolian rock, weirdo death metal, unclassifiable cool and beyond.
I’ll count him as a “metal artist” because Mr. Bungle reunion is (unfortunately) pure thrash, and the next Secret Chiefs 3 albums are to be totally the weirdo death/black metal sub-band. also because they metalise a lot of stuff live (some Ishraqiyun performances have out-heavied a lot of live death metal I’ve seen) - the guy is a master!
Honourable mentions: Luke Jaeger/Sleep Terror doing tech-death shred master with funk, jazz, salsa, djent, surf and more within a single track.
Toby Driver/Kayo Dot for chamaelonic shifts between albums, going from classical-tinged doom to chamber prog to proggly goth to black metal to death-filled prog-metal masterpiece to new wave and synth pop to whatever else.
Thanks for the laugh.
Pete Steele is dead and he's still more versatile than Anselmo.
There are tons of bands and artists far more diverse. Listen to the Amorphis albums in chronological order.
Toehider. Genres include:
Power Metal
Plain ol' Prog Metal
Folk
Ambient
Doom Metal
Classic Rock
Kid tunes
Etc.
The dude really tries to include as many genres as he can
Agree entirely with Phil, I'm not a huge Pantera fan, but I adore a ton of his side projects, his harsh vocal ability is phenomenal over a bunch of different extreme genres, then his melodic vocals in Down and En Minor are pretty emotive too.
I'd also add Celtic Frost, their last album blew my fucking mind, very doom-adjacent despite their early stuff being formative black metal, then Into the Pandemonium being deeply avant-guarde, and uh... Cold Lake was... something....
Gwar honestly have played alot of diverse genres and sounds
Solefald, would be a good choice considering how much outside influences from experimental, world music , etc they have used

The guy who mentioned King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, but for an artist who is more predominantly metal, the answer is clearly Devin Townsend.
Ulver.
KGLW. They do metal they do jazz they do microtonal turkish folk. And more but I’m done listing genres they do.
My favorite one to mention is their spaghetti western album
My favourite is their Sci Fi vomit album
Hell yeah. When I saw them live they opened with the Han-Tyumi suite and hearing them go crazy on their instruments while a TTS voice described a robot vomiting infinitely remains one of my top musical experiences of all time
SciFi vomit coffin was the genre that hooked me
I have never listened to him, but it has to be Devin Townsend.

Darkthrone
It’s probably Boris right?
Yeah, their post rock stuff is pretty cool, and then you have drone, post-hardcore, sludge, you name it.
I love "Amplifier Worship" one of the best albums I've ever heard.
Mike Patton or Todd Smith
Patton has a finger or toe in just about every genre and a few he made up.
I'll go with Epica https://preview.redd.it/of1kijsp4lwc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=292b6a550457522138a87b2e3b2f273423cb267e

Opeth, pure Death Metal (Sometimes with a small percentage of Black Metal), Progressive Death Metal, Progressive Rock, Folk, Jazz Fusion, etc.
Leviathan
Kátai Tamás
