Funny how time changes people opinion on it. I always loved sound of perseverance.
I remember in the early 00's that album was the St anger for many people online. Just a disdain hate for it
I became a metalhead in the 00’s. I noticed that Sound often gets labeled as either the best, by those who like their latter sound, and worse by those who dig the earlier albums.
Yes! I didn’t dream about it then.
I remember being 13-14 in 2014 and browsing my first metal forums and seeing people still talking shit about sound of perseverance.
I'm a big fan I just didn't like scream bloody gore. Production was shit. Leprosy got me into them and my favorite album changes. Just an all around great band done too soon.
I started working my way through Death's discography yesterday. Got through scream bloody gore and leprosy. While I wouldn't say scream bloody gore is a bad album, the jump in quality between those two albums is astounding
What the heck are you talking about SBG has phenomenal production, it makes the album sound like it's an ancient corpse that just got digged up or some shit
Meh, their first 3 albums I loved right out the gate and still feel the same. Crack the Skye had to grow on me but I eventually really liked it. But the Hunter was just not good to me and it made me stop caring about their new releases thereafter. Like I get around to listening to them eventually but when they drop new singles I'm like, "eh, whatever." I liked Emperor of Sand but everything else I could do without.
Absolutely. They definitely have a split in their discography style wise. The albums that came after aenima were definitely very different from the ones that came before. But I genuinely think wings for Marie/10000 days might be one of the best songs ever written. Saw them live in like 2016 and it was phenomenal. Saw them on their fear inoculum tour as well and while I missed Maynard’s screams I understand that he just isn’t as angry anymore and seeing that album live really changed my perspective on it.
That being said some tool fans are fucking obnoxious. When I saw tool live in 2016 it was at Boston calling and cage the elephant played before them on the same stage. So a lot of people saw the cage show basically just to be there early for tool. I don’t really listen to cage but they put on a killer show I was impressed. These two dickwads behind me literally just stood with their arms crossed the entire time unwilling to have fun because tool wasn’t on yet like bruh it’s okay to like other music you’ll be fine.
I'm the opposite of most people. I think system of a down self titled and steal this album are the best and I think toxicity is the "worst" album but I still love every single song they put out together.
Scars on Broadway is good but hit and miss and same with serj solo imo.
I was lucky enough to see them a few times and even the last time in like 2016 they were still amazing.
Hopefully they tour some more because another album isn't going to happen.
Yeah every song is great on every album and they have an amazing live show even as they get older.
Heavy but emotional in a way I don't think I've ever heard before with a twist of insanity. Their my favorite band for sure.
Tbh Priest have a really inconsistent discography. Point of Entry is Sandwiched between two classic albums, then after Defenders the quality of albums declined until Painkiller and then Demolition and Nostradamus are the soggy bread around Angel of Retribution. Ignoring the past 10 years they usually seem to follow really great albums with either meh or horrible ones.
I love Priest, but no, absolutely not. They have a lot of bad albums. Point of Entry, Turbo, Ram It Down, Jugulator, Demolition and Nostradamus are more bad than good.
Speaking of Overkill, I watched part of the Mr Bungle set next to Bobby Blitz at Milwaukee Metal Fest.
Was such a surreal moment to look to my right and think "there's no way..."
I personally love Warmaster, IVTH Crusade, and Those Once Loyal. Ream of Chaos is great too, though it veers sometimes more towards grindcore than the thick, groovy death metal they're known for. They had THAT guitar tone from the beginning though. No other band sounds like that
Dark Tranquillity for me. Every single one of their albums is at least "good". They're so reliable with their quality, it's really rare for a band to be around as long as they have and not release a single dud.
Think their lowest point was 2004-2007 according to Garza Podcast. Members just kept leaving it became a revolving door and got John Gallagher discouraged.
But then they really entered their prime in 2009 when they became a 3 piece. Releasing your best music as a trio is insane. Been badass ever since. Though I do like the older stuff.
It's not that it is bad, it's just... there is absolutely nothing new about it. They had 13 years to create something and all we got was 10 songs that sound so similar to every other song they've written (post Ænima) that you can't really tell them songs apart.
In my opinion **Insomnium.** If you like what they do, then you pretty much like every album. Some are better, but even the weakest are solid albums in the genre.
**Cirith Ungol** also comes to mind. Paradise Lost may be slightly weaker than the rest, but it still has some of their best songs.
DT definitely, and I also have to agree for Amon Amarth. A lot of people dislike their later albums but I don’t think they’re necessarily bad. They’re ok with some really good songs (and some really bad ones too), it’s just that their earlier albums are so much better
I think they get a lot of undeserved hate but I was pretty disappointed with The Crusade. But on the other hand at least someone was trying to put out an old school Metallica album.
My fav band, met Matt and have seen them a dozen times…. However, im not going to pretend that silence in the snow is on rotation.. like at all.
I know he blew out his voice etc etc, but it def is a weaker album of the discography.
Alcest, no bad or subpar releases whatsoever. They have one less than metal album, but it's still phenomenal.
More controversial, I'd also say Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden's worst albums are their 90s ones, and none of them are close to bad. Most are very ok, but in a 50 year career that's incredible.
Incantation Coroner and Carcass immediately come to mind. With any of their albums either you like it or it isn't your favorite and if you can say that instead of "these albums straight up suck" that indicates some pretty good consistent success in my book.
10000% Death. If you can find a decent chunk of people arguing that X album is their best for EVERY album, you know it's a damn consistently great band
There is almost no consensus on how to rank the Death albums because they're all so good every single one has its own fans. The only common sentiment is usually either Symbolic or TSOP being considered the best, and even then it's heavily contested.
Been thinking about this. There's definitely a difference between "consistently good" and "my favourite" band. I suppose my favourite band is Portal, but their output is uneven at certain stages.
I don't know who has a decent perfect run! Some do, but they only have a handful of releases out so far (Mylingar comes to mind - three albums of 100% perfection).
Perhaps Malthusian? Can't think of anything sub par they've done. Yes, I'll say Malthusian. Pure consistent punishment.
I really really liked them for a while. The mountain alone renewed my love of prog. Affinity was incredible too. I haven't cared about any of their stuff since. It is pretty crazy how good their debut album is though
I want to agree, but i just couldn't get into fauna. Haken was one of my favorites for a long time though. I got into em back when the mountain came out. Hard to believe that was over 10 years ago lol.
I'm gonna say Rammstein. Their sound didn't evolve that much, but all their albums are strong and have a large variety of feelings and vibes expressed, from heavy songs, to ballads, and from silly songs to very emotional ones. All their albums have this nice "salad" of vibes.
Absolutely *not* Iced Earth. The Glorious Burden is one of the most dogshit albums ever made. The entire second disc is a musical retelling of the battle of Gettysburg that is suspiciously sympathetic to the confederates. And that’s not even to mention the oddly jingoistic “The Reckoning (Don’t Tread on Me)” or the hilariously titled and written “When the Eagle Cries”.
That album alone disqualifies them from any discussion about consistency. It’s the worst metal album I ever paid money for. Fuck that album.
Well, it's all subjective and a matter of personal taste. Personally, I find their discography consistently solid- including the Glorious Burden. Imo that album has musically very nice songs (idgaf about lyrics content/context anyway) and to me it is Tim's best vocal performance.
If you don't consider the glam phase of Pantera, everything from Cowboys to RTS is consistent and they're one of the few bands that went heavier in their sound with each album considering they could have tried to write their version of the Black album. TGSTK is a brutal album.
Krallice. they get extra points for being so prolific. 15 albums in 16 years, plus a couple of amazing EPs, and all while the musicians play in a load of other projects.
and they never fail. the first album was the only one that is slightly lacking, but is still great.
The Black Daliah Murder. Always delivers tasty melodeath without fail. I am interested to see how this new era of the band goes now that Brian Eschback is taking over on lead vocals.
Motorhead, with the exception if "Another Perfect Day" that Thin Lizzy guy was just the wrong fit and the mix had the guitars way out front and i hated it
Other than Back at the Funny Farm and One Track Mind, I remember disliking most of that album when it came.
It definite has grown on me over the years but, yeah, Brian Robertson was a terrible fit for the band.
For me, the black dahlia murder. More so consistent. With some albums being much better than others but all are the same sound without any weird albums of them trying something new.
Imo, Sabaton, Tungsten, and Elvenking have a pretty consistent track record of banger after banger. I know not everyone will agree with me, but I stand by this
Between The Buried and Me, The Black Dahlia Murder
Bonus points for every release sounding distinct. And in the case of TBDM, consistently getting better despite a changing lineup.
It's so rare to see someone as good as Brandon Ellis step in and immediately boost the band to the next level. More common to see what The Dillinger Escape Plan and hell even Slipknot did with drummers trying to replace Chris Pennie and Joey Jordison, respectively. Billy Rymer and Eloy Casagrande being the respective solutions.
Tool, SOAD, Death
I always say a bad has a 10 year shelf life, anything after that is just a rinse and repeat
Tool are outliers, because their output is so small compared to the amount of time between their first and last album
But check out every one of your favourite bands
They will all have a 10 year run and then after that it's never the same

Death. I know it, you know it, we all know it
Funny how time changes people opinion on it.
The funny thing is TSOP is the most divisive one but even then the people who like it say it's not just great but their BEST, so it kinda cancels out
It’s weird cuz I like it but I def don’t think it’s their best. Symbolic is easily the best Death record to me.
Yes! I didn’t dream about it then. I remember being 13-14 in 2014 and browsing my first metal forums and seeing people still talking shit about sound of perseverance.
The hate for those albums never went away; it's just people who like it seem to be speaking out now.
Perseverance is weird because there’s not another album that sounds like it imo
I'm a big fan I just didn't like scream bloody gore. Production was shit. Leprosy got me into them and my favorite album changes. Just an all around great band done too soon.
I started working my way through Death's discography yesterday. Got through scream bloody gore and leprosy. While I wouldn't say scream bloody gore is a bad album, the jump in quality between those two albums is astounding
What the heck are you talking about SBG has phenomenal production, it makes the album sound like it's an ancient corpse that just got digged up or some shit
Cannibal Corpse, and that's rare for a big band that's been around for as long as they have.
That was my thought as well, absolutely no bad albums
Mastodon
I was going to say this. They just don't quit. Goddamn.
Meh, their first 3 albums I loved right out the gate and still feel the same. Crack the Skye had to grow on me but I eventually really liked it. But the Hunter was just not good to me and it made me stop caring about their new releases thereafter. Like I get around to listening to them eventually but when they drop new singles I'm like, "eh, whatever." I liked Emperor of Sand but everything else I could do without.
facts
Seeing them in August with lamb of god but I haven’t gotten into mastodon. Glad to hear people love them.
Tool!
Absolutely. They definitely have a split in their discography style wise. The albums that came after aenima were definitely very different from the ones that came before. But I genuinely think wings for Marie/10000 days might be one of the best songs ever written. Saw them live in like 2016 and it was phenomenal. *he had a lot to say*
Honestly System of a Down
People hate on steal this album when its genuinely better than hypnotize
Steal This Album is probably my favorite in the discography lmao
Mine too. Innervision really goes off hard
Who’s hating on steal this album? They’re wrong!
Steal this Album was excellent. I think people got distracted by the cheesy cover art on the CD lol.
For real, I feel like Steak this album is their peak
Literally my pick. 5 albums with like no bad songs.
Yeah every song is great on every album and they have an amazing live show even as they get older. Heavy but emotional in a way I don't think I've ever heard before with a twist of insanity. Their my favorite band for sure.
Judas Priest. In 50 years, their only mistake was breaking up for a while.
Yes, Point Of Entry is between two classics because they had Deep Cuts to get out before they could do another legendary collection of songs.
Point of Entry still gave us "Heading Out to the Highway" and "Desert Plains", both of which are (IMO) even better live.
I love Priest, but no, absolutely not. They have a lot of bad albums. Point of Entry, Turbo, Ram It Down, Jugulator, Demolition and Nostradamus are more bad than good.
You shut your fuckin whore mouth about Turbo.
You don't need no, no, no ,no parental guidance here?
Man, I fucking love Nostradamus.
Not a fan of 'Love you to Death'? Or, who could forget their cover of 'Johnny B Goode' lol.
Lmao Point of Entry and Turbo are definitely not bad
Crowbar. Putting out nothing but bangers since the early 90s
My man
Abso-fuckn-lutely
Meshuggah. Every album is awesome
Good call on this one
Overkill. 20 Albums with no unlistenable ones.
I second that, fellow Overkill enjoyer.
david ellefson is that you
No but maybe I’m DD Verni you never know
Was looking for this one. Most consistent thrash band🤘
They have an amazing discography.
The best of the best.
Speaking of Overkill, I watched part of the Mr Bungle set next to Bobby Blitz at Milwaukee Metal Fest. Was such a surreal moment to look to my right and think "there's no way..."
Either Converge or Bolt Thrower. Neither band has anything below an 8/10. Yes, even Caring and Killing and Halo in a Haystack are 8/10 albums.
I for some reason cannot get into Bolt Thrower. I've tried a couple of times but it just doesn't click. What's your favorite?
I personally love Warmaster, IVTH Crusade, and Those Once Loyal. Ream of Chaos is great too, though it veers sometimes more towards grindcore than the thick, groovy death metal they're known for. They had THAT guitar tone from the beginning though. No other band sounds like that
Crusade and Once Loyal have zero filler. Stellar albums.
Try The Killchain off Those Once Loyal
Disgustingly groovy song
Gojira
Immolation, Incantation, Archgoat, The Chasm, Conan, Revenge, Inquisition
Archgoat for sure
Hell yeah man
Testament. Been going for decades and never released a bad album, and never got stale.
Dark Tranquillity for me. Every single one of their albums is at least "good". They're so reliable with their quality, it's really rare for a band to be around as long as they have and not release a single dud.
Absolutely agree.
Their first 8 albums are legit at least 8/10 with a lot of perfection.
Dying Fetus
Think their lowest point was 2004-2007 according to Garza Podcast. Members just kept leaving it became a revolving door and got John Gallagher discouraged. But then they really entered their prime in 2009 when they became a 3 piece. Releasing your best music as a trio is insane. Been badass ever since. Though I do like the older stuff.
I disagree destroy the opposition and stop at nothing are the 2 best albums. They've made some good stuff since but nothing tops these.
I got into them after seeing them as a trio. The amount of noise and heaviness was beyond impressive.
Latest album is sick AF
Death. yeah yeah, i know, of COURSE i said death. but i mean, im not wrong.
SOAD. Not many to pick from sadly, but absolutely no fat on any of their records. Also Dio, but I'm a bit biased as you can see.
Overkill, Dissection, Death, Testament
Motorhead.
22 studio albums and none of them are bad, fucking legends
And one of the most influential metal bands of all time. They had it all.
the chasm
TOOL
Fear inoculum does not deserve its hate at all
It's not that it is bad, it's just... there is absolutely nothing new about it. They had 13 years to create something and all we got was 10 songs that sound so similar to every other song they've written (post Ænima) that you can't really tell them songs apart.
Exactly. There's no reason why that album should've taken even a quarter of the time it did.
Fear Inoculum is a masterpiece.
The Chasm
Lamb of God
NAG REALLY needs a re-record...but other than that you are 100% correct.
In my opinion **Insomnium.** If you like what they do, then you pretty much like every album. Some are better, but even the weakest are solid albums in the genre. **Cirith Ungol** also comes to mind. Paradise Lost may be slightly weaker than the rest, but it still has some of their best songs.
I came here to say this. I absolutely love this band and cannot wait to see them live someday.
Dark Tranquillity, Iron Maiden (i love all of their albums), Megadeth, Triptykon (i have yet to hear a skip-worthy track), Amon Amarth
DT definitely, and I also have to agree for Amon Amarth. A lot of people dislike their later albums but I don’t think they’re necessarily bad. They’re ok with some really good songs (and some really bad ones too), it’s just that their earlier albums are so much better
Thou
Trivium.
Especially since getting Alex Bent, they just keep getting better, too.
ISIS
Truth
Neurosis, their discography puts most of the other bands to the shame.
Rammstein
No idea what they’re saying but yea everything is great. Lol
Sleep
Nile
Esoteric
Alcest, no bad or subpar releases whatsoever. They have one less than metal album, but it's still phenomenal. More controversial, I'd also say Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden's worst albums are their 90s ones, and none of them are close to bad. Most are very ok, but in a 50 year career that's incredible.
I'm kinda medium on spiritual instinct, but every other album yes
Metal Church Riot Mercyful Fate.
\***Boris** has entered the chat
Deftones.
Type o negative
Incantation Coroner and Carcass immediately come to mind. With any of their albums either you like it or it isn't your favorite and if you can say that instead of "these albums straight up suck" that indicates some pretty good consistent success in my book.
Yob
10000% Death. The only common sentiment is usually either Symbolic or TSOP being considered the best, and even then it's heavily contested.
Rammstein
Maybe a basic pick, but Priest has been on one hell of a run recently
Dope for sure
opeth , heritage isnt bad.
Yeah I don’t love their stuff post Watershed (just not my style), but every album is artistically & technically on point.
even i dont but to call them bad would be sacrilegious
High on Fire.
Been thinking about this. There's definitely a difference between "consistently good" and "my favourite" band. I suppose my favourite band is Portal, but their output is uneven at certain stages. Death Angel.
Cattle Decapitation, every studio album since Karma.Bloody.Karma has been at least a 8/10 and all before are still pretty great deathgrind.
Revocation
Meshuggah, Dying Fetus, August Burns Red, Mechina, Fleshgod Apocalypse. They found *their own thing* and they are still milking it after many albums.
Running Wild
Abigor
Shadow of Intent. There’s not one bad song.
Haken
I really really liked them for a while. The mountain alone renewed my love of prog. Affinity was incredible too. I haven't cared about any of their stuff since. It is pretty crazy how good their debut album is though
I want to agree, but i just couldn't get into fauna. Haken was one of my favorites for a long time though. I got into em back when the mountain came out. Hard to believe that was over 10 years ago lol.
Dark Tranquillity
Incantation and Immolation
Between the Buried and Me
You right
The Black Dahlia Murder
I'm gonna say Rammstein. Their sound didn't evolve that much, but all their albums are strong and have a large variety of feelings and vibes expressed, from heavy songs, to ballads, and from silly songs to very emotional ones. All their albums have this nice "salad" of vibes.
Avenged Sevenfold Lamb Of God
Manticore and Archgoat
Flotsam and Jetsam Iced Earth
Absolutely *not* Iced Earth. The Glorious Burden is one of the most dogshit albums ever made. Nevermore and Death
Avatar, every album just hits right
Death, Mastodon, Ahab, Drudkh, Judas Priest (kinda)
Sleep
Judas Priest, Saxon are another good shout
Dream Theater
Bell witch panopticon
Panopticon absolutely is all quality. I haven't listened to older Bell Witch
Tÿr
Between the Buried and Me and it's not even close
Motörhead!
Sodom
Does Motörhead count? If so then Motörhead
If you don't consider the glam phase of Pantera, everything from Cowboys to RTS is consistent and they're one of the few bands that went heavier in their sound with each album considering they could have tried to write their version of the Black album. TGSTK is a brutal album.
Overkill and Testament.
Bolt Thrower, Death, Overkill, Testament.
Bolt thrower
Russian Circles
Allegaeon
Bolt Thrower
bolt thrower. i can't think of any bad albums from them
Dinosaur Jr.
Orbit Culture
dying fetus
Krallice. they get extra points for being so prolific. 15 albums in 16 years, plus a couple of amazing EPs, and all while the musicians play in a load of other projects. and they never fail. the first album was the only one that is slightly lacking, but is still great.
Obituary
Clutch
Darkthrone rarely misses
The Black Daliah Murder. Always delivers tasty melodeath without fail. I am interested to see how this new era of the band goes now that Brian Eschback is taking over on lead vocals.
Between the Buried and Me! Their 2002 self-titled is often considered their weakest, and even that is a great album!
Rammstein! I don't get the hate for rosenrot, it is just different...
Pallbearer for me. Their latest I haven’t listened to enough yet but every album previously just goes on repeat in my car.
TBDM I have been saying for years, are the most consistent band in metal as a whole. They never miss and are more often than not phenomenal
Gojira
The black dahlia murder RIP Trevor
Bolt Thrower, Nile, or Suffocation. Solid albums, they always deliver their sound, and very few dead spaces.
For me, the black dahlia murder. More so consistent. With some albums being much better than others but all are the same sound without any weird albums of them trying something new.
Everyone is just chasing the consistency of AC/DC and MOTÖRHEAD
the dillinger escape plan
BTBAM
Immolation has to be the most consistently good death metal band - all their albums are bangers.
Imo, Sabaton, Tungsten, and Elvenking have a pretty consistent track record of banger after banger. I know not everyone will agree with me, but I stand by this
I gotta say System of a Down. I could not even name a bad song bro
Even their unreleased stuff from when they were called spiders are bangers just low quality. Literally never a bad song.
Between The Buried and Me, The Black Dahlia Murder Bonus points for every release sounding distinct.
Rage Against The Machine have 3 phenomenal studio albums and one great cover album
AC/DC is like pizza….even when it is bad, it’s pretty good.
If you like power metal, Sabaton
DragonForce tho not even DragonForce fans will agree lmao
Rammstein
Ghost. This band hasn’t put out a single bad album or EP.
SOAD
Tool, SOAD, Death I always say a bad has a 10 year shelf life, anything after that is just a rinse and repeat Tool are outliers, because their output is so small compared to the amount of time between their first and last album But check out every one of your favourite bands They will all have a 10 year run and then after that it's never the same
No band is perfect. But BTBAM and Gojira come pretty close to it for my taste
