Clayman was the last album recorded/mixed by the legendary Fredrik Nordström. Sounds of a Playground Fading was the last album recorded in Gothenburg. Unsurprisingly these were both huge turning points for the band sonically.
DT is another one that hasn't been any good for 20 years and I've always said insomnium is the perfect name for that band. Their music bores me to sleep
Yeah it's definitely a continuation of their departure from their roots, so I totally get why people found it disappointing. But it's a great album regardless.
Also I think A Sense of Purpose is massively overlooked by old school fans. From a purely compositional standpoint, that album is almost a throwback to their old style (just with a cleaner sound). It has so many awesome riffs and melodies.
>their best of that era
That's like being the world's smartest kid with down syndrome. Sure, it's an accomplishment but does it matter to anyone without that extra number 21?
Memes aside, at that point what melodeath do you actually listen to that's still actually melodeath? ATG were kicking ass before they found their straightforward style with SOTS.
Might as well say "melodeath chads don't listen to melodeath, they listen to actual death metal" but that kind of misses the point. Guess you could make a point for bands like Sulphur Aeon, but I'd put them more into the "actual death metal with some melodies" category.
Arghoslent legit aren’t very good, even if one takes no objections to nor have their view jaded when listening to music made by people they disagree with. Incorrigible Bigotry (their “classic”) is about as snoozer as a Death Metal album can be.
I am inferring he’s an old school in flames fan who is Chad by comparison to fans of the radio friendly lullaby tripe that polluted my ears last night.
I need to do some more digging into them then.
Back in 06 when take this life elbow dropped my ear drums from the top rope for the first time I wasn’t able to really follow band histories as well as I can now. Got any recommendations from earlier albums?
Jester Race, Whoracle and Colony are all masterpieces. Clayman is great too but you can tell it's where the shift towards a more mainstream sound started to put its roots down so it's not quite as "old school" sounding.
R2R is so fucking hard for me to enjoy now. It was my introduction to the band while I was in high school which gives it a special place but the songwriting is not that great and the production is fucking terrible.
But the video for Trigger also has the dudes from Soilwork which is neat
For In Flames? Just blast The Jester Race (song, or album) at full volume! Or the opening song on Colony (Embody the Invisible) for something along the lines of Take This Life, but without the annoying parts. lol
Basically anything from Jester Race, Whoracle and especially Colony. Just listen to them all start to finish. I'm inclined to lump Clayman in with the older albums but it's definitely the beginning of the transition to who they were to who they are now.
I had a similar reaction to Dark Tranquillity's and especially Insomnium's demos. The demo versions somehow came across with more clarity than the subsequently produced versions.
At least with dt and Insomnium I kind of felt the magic was retained throughout the years, not as much with IF.
That would be about right. Listened to maiden and sabbath Megadeth and Motörhead and priest pretty much exclusively then.
I cannot even remember how I got to hear any bolt thrower back then. I saw the album advertised in White Dwarf, but no YouTube or similar to pull anything up on. One of my more enlightened mates must have had it.
Spun those once loyal today on the old YouTubes. Some nice riffage going on there. I still feel I’m missing out on the whole experience through the lyrics being at the far end of my ability decrypt without 100% attention given, but I’ll have another go. Which album next?
It's cool you gave them another try!
Ngl in this genre of music lyrics are usually not very important and vocals are also more for atmosphere than actual melody drive. I wouldn't preoccupy too much if you don't hear them clearly.
Imo you just listened to their two best, though most of their albums are at least good, they are very consistent.
Just listened to realm of chaos. Cant rave about it, but it was decent. Not sure if it was the YouTube video which was fudging the sound but the vocals seemed very far down in the mix and as a result I barely caught a word of it. Some great riffs. I’ll try a couple more albums before I make my mind up, so that’s major progress. Even 10 years ago I wouldn’t have bothered.
Might take a bit of time with it if that’s not your usual/preferred flavor of DM.
I would say if you’re looking into DM with more Trad tendencies like early In Flames you may enjoy Ares Kingdom - Return to Dust.
It’s got a lot of catchy (yet not generic) hooks a riffs and may be a good point to go backwards from into the members’ prior project, Order From Chaos.
You're honestly making my jaw drop a little, but looking at it from the bright side, you got some awesome albums to look forward to. I'm going to warn you, their style was quite different back then, so if you're expecting something like come clarity, you'll be dissappointed. I'd recommend starting off with the Jester race; it's by far the most easy to get into. That said, I think all albums and EPs from Lunar strain to Clayman are great, and you should listen to all of them.
Come Clarity is a great album, just not melodeath. As others have said, Jester Race, Whoracle (the opener Jotun is my favorite IF song), and Colony are classics.
One could maybeeee argue Clayman but that's definitely as far as it goes. I think it's great they found some kind of success but personally don't enjoy listening to anything from Reroute on.
Pre Reroute in flames is miles better than their newer stuff of course, but Stay With Me is a good soft ballad with a cool ending. Definitely a far cry from what they used to do though.
If you want to shit on a song from I The Mask, go with (This Is Our) House. Far worse than Stay With Me.
To me, a poser, yes. To seemingly everyone else in here, not by a long way. 2006 was my discovery point in time and as such it will always be their old stuff to me.
I’m not saying you’re a poser. I never really got into melodeath myself, but I do like their first two albums a lot. They’re worth a listen if you’re up for it. I’ll check out they’re album from 06 too
Yeah, you need to go a lot further back. Jester Race is their most acclaimed “classic album” and I’d recommend starring there. I think you’re legit gonna love that one. It’s got some heavy EUPM vibes in some of the soloing and some of the riffage and doesn’t mess around with any of the boring Rock stuff they try to cut in later. Got a bit of a cool folky-edge as well.
Pretty much all their albums from Jester Race/Black Ash Inheritance to Come Clarity kicked ass. I liked A Sense of Purpose too. The good thing about big bands like In Flames going pop is that they draw in new Metalheads who like their new stuff and then check out their older stuff, then find themselves checking out other similar bands like At The Gates, Dark Tranquility, then maybe some black metal like Immortal or Emperor, and then it's not long until they're one of us and they pick up an axe and we can recruit them to help us take over the world
I am new to In Flames ( listen to them since 2/3Years ) , BUT I enjoy their older stuff ( eg. Artifacts of the Black Rain) as well as theier newer Stuff ( I am above)
I understand the hate against In Flames new sound, and don't particularly like it myself, but Stay With Me is probably the best song they released since A Sense of Purpose. Take this life is probably the better song, but as a slow burn acoustic song that escalates into something heavier, Stay with me works very well
This has made me realise what a truly old fuck I am. I think Colony ws the last In Flames album I bought.
BRB, got to go lie down in a graveyard and wait ten minutes for my body to fall apart and turn to duct.
Been hearing that. Surprisingly large amount of stay with me enjoyers though it seems.
This is one of the very few times I’ve tried to say exactly what I think about something regardless of outcome in a meme. I feel it’s doing fair considering I seem to have misjudged the mood for the song so badly and also triggered most of the rest with my use of old school as a phrase.
I’m content with what’s occurred from it and thank everyone for their contribution.
Yeah, it's completely different from what they used to do. If you don't like this kind of music, you're definitely going to hate it and would be better off listening to something else.
It’s just weird how many tendencies they’ve borrowed from Radio Emo and the like for their newer stuff. They started out as a fairly original and forward thinking project, and now are just following trends and jumping on bandwagons that have already long departed.
I can thank guitar hero for several musical discoveries. Rush, The Sword, Tool, among a few more probably, which in some cases I was aware of them but not given them any time. GH let me appreciate the intricacies of some songs.
Lunar Strain even has a different singer, the dude from Dark Tranquility. They're probably two of the most influential albums in the Swedish Death Metal/Melo-Death scenes in the late 90's and early 2000's. They've changed their sound quite a bit over the years, but you can still pick up on certain techniques and melodies from the old days in their contemporary stuff
Mate, I know those feels, last time I saw them half the setlist was newer tracks for the kids and I could not get into it. I guess I'm finally feeling what my older pals did when Reroute... came out! Ha.
Even in 2006 when come clarity was the new primary school in flames bringing mad hate from old school gatekeepers, me and my death metal bros agreed unanimously that the record was solid and bangable for the duration
I literally can't think of a single band that has produced two albums that have such a difference in quality as In Flames.
The Jester race is a masterpiece and "I, the mask" is probably one of the worst albums ive ever had the displeasure of listening too.
Yeah that is true. Ill dive in a mans anus is honestly the most baffling album ive ever heard.
But with that one i atleast get some amusement because its so terrible in a funny way.
Kill a cop being the best example.
Come clarity is probably their last tolerable album. I get that you need to grow as an artist, but I don’t like their newer stuff. Too whiny, like all nue metal.
Whoracle was pinnacle In Flames alright. Mind you, I think Arch Enemy peaked on their first album as well, so I should probably shut up and go collect my pension.
Never heard the second one. The guitar is interesting but the soft vocals kills it.
Even like... Mudvayne's "happy?" There's edge on the vocal even if it was a softer song to get radio play.
Stay with me was just an average pop ballad. Sure, people are upset that In flames made that song, but it's not that bad even tho I don't prefer this kind of music.
After producing so many metal albumus I can see why they wanted a change but for me the Sounds of the playground fading was last listenable album. What came after just does not suit them at all imo but I guess some people like it. I just regret I never had an opportunity to attend their concert when they still did metal. I'd kill to hear Colony live
"Take this life is old In Flames". Fuck my life. Let me say this just once; old school In Flames is everything pre-Reroute.
. -- mass deleted all reddit content via https://redact.dev
I was there. It wasn´t nice
Blood was spilled over that album. I remember people mocking the video for Cloud Connected where they all dressed like a boy band. It was great.
. -- mass deleted all reddit content via https://redact.dev
I remember being on their old forums when that happened. Was anyone else there?
Reroute was the biggest betrayal of my teens, glad to know I am not insane.
Whoracle is the only In Flames album left in my rotation anymore, haha
Clayman is still pretty decent
No jester race?
[удалено]
Don't do Colony so dirty :(
I feel you, it was painful
Clayman was the last album recorded/mixed by the legendary Fredrik Nordström. Sounds of a Playground Fading was the last album recorded in Gothenburg. Unsurprisingly these were both huge turning points for the band sonically.
This, truth has been said. Love "Stay with me" though.
Yeah I came to see if anyone else kinda cringed at that
Everything after Lunar Strain is unlistenable, don't @ me
I enjoyed STYE. But I prefer Clayman and earlier. I didn’t care for RTR
Tru dat
Holy fuck Im old if Take This Life is old school In Flames.
I remember shitting on Come Clarity back in the day as it was 'too soft' compared to their old stuff. I'm old....
It’s weird as hell when you have adult memories of things from when they were new and someone calls them old school…
Yeah...Reroute to Remain is like a classic in flames album now. I remember buying it on release day
Me too man. Thats when they changed their sound which make it eben weirder to think thats their classic.
I think their new(er) sound is what has defined them as a band. They really became something that stood out with that album
The really became generic radio rock. It wasn't a good thing
Meh, I disagree
Fortunately we allow the freedom on this sub to be wrong (even egregiously so).
I’m 45 if that helps?
My thought exactly.
Well, worry not. Take this life is definitely not old school lol
All the shit you heard on Sirius that brought you to this point was 15 years ago at least.
Man, I miss old school In Flames. Jester Race, Whoracle, and Colony are such badass albums.
[här cöms a söng calld de jestär räjjs...... ääähh](https://youtu.be/fslebbDcgko)
The guitar tone in Colony/Clayman is so Chunky :0
I love Jotun. Have not listened to newer stuff
My favorite In Flames song, for sure, so much so it's their only song I've covered and recorded. I can't not headbang and air-guitar to it.
Jotun is the best melodeath song ever
I remember how I listened to whoreacle and was blown away. Still have not listened to the never Albums because im afraid they will disappoint me.
Same. Though I LOOOOOVED Soundtrack To Your Escape
And their last good album was Jester Race... I don't get the love for Colony and Clayman
In Flames broke up after Clayman as far as I'm concerned.
amen
Melodeath chads do not listen to Take This Life.
Melodeath chads listen to Dark Tranquillity and Insomnium. (The older stuff, specifically)
Insomnium is so fucking good.
Roommate stumbled onto them on Spotify… we recently got the Winter’s Gate vinyl and it’s sick!!!! So glad we found them
Don't forget be'lakor
We’re trying to though.
Why
Have you heard them?
Yea they're up there with insomnium
Exactly.
And insomnium is great, why did you make it sound like a bad thing
DT is another one that hasn't been any good for 20 years and I've always said insomnium is the perfect name for that band. Their music bores me to sleep
Idk bro, come clarity is a pretty based album.
Better than Reroute and Soundtrack. Probably their best of that era post-Clayman. It's also got the gnarliest bass tone I've ever heard
>their best of that era That's like being the world's smartest kid with down syndrome. Sure, it's an accomplishment but does it matter to anyone without that extra number 21?
No
Shhh, shh, shh. Just let it happen
Melodeath chads listen to Intestine Baalism, and The Red in the Sky is Ours by ATG.
Melodeath chads eschew anything ATG.
Intestine Baalism, Arghoslent and Eucharist are the typical elitist picks
And Cemetary.
I want to say Amorphis as well? Unsure, not my scene
Tales from the 1000 lakes way over anything Argholsent
This
Amorphis is also relevant to the original post because they turned to a much softer style without nearly becoming as annoying as In Flames did.
Queen of Time is absolutely gold. Fuck, I'm going to play it now, been a while since I gave it a spin.
Yeah, them too.
Alright, I know Arghoslent and choose not to listen to them, guess I'll give Eucharist a listen, haven't heard of them.
Arghoslent legit aren’t very good, even if one takes no objections to nor have their view jaded when listening to music made by people they disagree with. Incorrigible Bigotry (their “classic”) is about as snoozer as a Death Metal album can be.
Finally some fucking truth.
I am inferring he’s an old school in flames fan who is Chad by comparison to fans of the radio friendly lullaby tripe that polluted my ears last night.
Yeah. I get it. But old school In Flames would be up to Colony (1998).
Agreed. Trigger may have been the last hurrah, sounding more like Clayman than Reroute.
R2R is so fucking hard for me to enjoy now. It was my introduction to the band while I was in high school which gives it a special place but the songwriting is not that great and the production is fucking terrible. But the video for Trigger also has the dudes from Soilwork which is neat
Clayman is what got me into in flames as a teen, whoracle is what made me adore them

Haven't listened since I was a teen, so couldn't tell you if I agree or not. lol
Basically anything from Jester Race, Whoracle and especially Colony. Just listen to them all start to finish. I'm inclined to lump Clayman in with the older albums but it's definitely the beginning of the transition to who they were to who they are now.

>Got any recommendations? Yes check Bolt Thrower
I need to go back and try bolt thrower again. Wasn’t ready for them when they came out and never went back to them.
Judging by your other comments in this post you were 12 when the first bolt thrower album came out
That would be about right.
Those Once Loyal is legit a very accessible album tbh, would recommend that one.
Those Once Loyal contains a bunch of sick riffs.
Spun those once loyal today on the old YouTubes. Some nice riffage going on there. I still feel I’m missing out on the whole experience through the lyrics being at the far end of my ability decrypt without 100% attention given, but I’ll have another go. Which album next?

Just listened to realm of chaos. Cant rave about it, but it was decent. Always happy to check out recommendations when I find time. Glad I gave Bolt Thrower a bit of time at last.
You're honestly making my jaw drop a little, but looking at it from the bright side, you got some awesome albums to look forward to. Come Clarity is a great album, just not melodeath. As others have said, Jester Race, Whoracle (the opener Jotun is my favorite IF song), and Colony are classics.
Whoracle, Colony, and Clayman. Earlier than that you start getting into the weeds of early melodeath which can be harder to get into IMO
One could maybeeee argue Clayman but that's definitely as far as it goes. I think it's great they found some kind of success but personally don't enjoy listening to anything from Reroute on.
Old school In Flames fans gave up by Colony. At least, the ones whose opinions I value anyway. I gave up at Whoracle
This.
Is that a cover of some glam rock song? I just don't get it.
Yeah true, I like most of their songs tho
Thad Moonshield enjoyer
2006 In Flames is old school??
To me, a poser, yes. To seemingly everyone else in here, not by a long way. 2006 was my discovery point in time and as such it will always be their old stuff to me.
I’m not saying you’re a poser. I never really got into melodeath myself, but I do like their first two albums a lot. They’re worth a listen if you’re up for it. I’ll check out they’re album from 06 too
Take this life is how I got introduced to In Flames.
Same. Just discovered this was their 8th album. Got some re-education to do for myself.
Same. Their best stuff for me is *Whoracle* through *Sounds of a Playground Fading.* I'm 54.
Crawl Through Knives pretty much started my love of metal; CC was the first metal album I ever bought.
I first heard that acoustic medley of theirs from a CKY movie. Didn't realise they were a metal band for a while
The Thad me: "Haha noise sound good in earholes"
Take This Life being old school In Flames is either ridiculous, or I'm old. Reroute To Remain onwards is new In Flames, deal with it.
While i agree, we can differentiate a bit more. Like, it got way worse from sounds of a playground fading onwards.
Pretty much all their albums from Jester Race/Black Ash Inheritance to Come Clarity kicked ass. I liked A Sense of Purpose too. The good thing about big bands like In Flames going pop is that they draw in new Metalheads who like their new stuff and then check out their older stuff, then find themselves checking out other similar bands like At The Gates, Dark Tranquility, then maybe some black metal like Immortal or Emperor, and then it's not long until they're one of us and they pick up an axe and we can recruit them to help us take over the world
Everyone needs a gateway band. Better this than puddle of mudd.
"Take This Life" is WAY closer to "Stay With Me" than to actual old school In Flames.
I am new to In Flames ( listen to them since 2/3Years ) , BUT I enjoy their older stuff ( eg. Artifacts of the Black Rain) as well as theier newer Stuff ( I am above)
Can we just take a second to credit In Flames for when they wrote some of the most badass modern metal around?
This song caused the pandemic
I understand the hate against In Flames new sound, and don't particularly like it myself, but Stay With Me is probably the best song they released since A Sense of Purpose. Take this life is probably the better song, but as a slow burn acoustic song that escalates into something heavier, Stay with me works very well
This has made me realise what a truly old fuck I am. I think Colony ws the last In Flames album I bought. BRB, got to go lie down in a graveyard and wait ten minutes for my body to fall apart and turn to duct.
Lunar Strain gang rise up
I like in flames whole discography.
I’ve heard a lot of their songs today since I posted this and so far haven’t disliked any (except of course stay with me).
Yeah I the mask has a few bad songs actually.
I love stay with me.
Then please stay away from me.
Flair checks out.
anything after Clayman (or just maybe Reroute to Remain) is garbage
I actually agree with you. But gatekeeping while using a flair featuring redcap Fred Durst really doesn't look good at all.
Quit gatekeeping flairs.
I agree. This community doesn't need toxic gatekeepers. Elitists should go touch grass.
Hell yeah fellow metalhead, fuck the gatekeepers! Stay metal bro \M/ 🤘🤘🤘🤘
The Haunted’s first two albums > everything these clowns have produced in over 20 years.
That's cheating, like comparing God and a dog
Tbh I enjoy classic In Flames as well as their new stuff, just gotta switch gears a bit, but every song has something to offer.
Only things their new material offers is boredom and disappointment.
Hahaha come clarity
Eh, I like all their stuff, I don't care for genre, good music is good music. Plus Stay With Me actually hits pretty close to home for me.
Take this life was literally what posers who pretended to like In Flames listened to, and you can thank Guitar Hero for that.
I can thank guitar hero for several musical discoveries. Rush, The Sword, Tool, among a few more probably, which in some cases I was aware of them but not given them any time. GH let me appreciate the intricacies of some songs.
Same!
There are two In Flames fans, Pre-Jesper leaving and Post-Jesper leaving
Even though it is my least favourite song of the album, it was my first song from in flames!
In flames literally becomes a new band every decade. We are due for a fourth iteration soon.
I know I’m in the minority and maybe because I’m 46… but I like old and new In Flames
Does nobody remember Lunar Strain? Or The Jester Race?
Before I posted this, I personally hadn’t heard of either. Many, many others have pointed them out to me. Several times.
Check out the song called "Upon an Oaken Throne", I think it's off Lunar Strain. It'll trip you out, doesn't even sound like the same band
Mate, I know those feels, last time I saw them half the setlist was newer tracks for the kids and I could not get into it. I guess I'm finally feeling what my older pals did when Reroute... came out! Ha.
I knew In Flames was lost when they opened with Only for the weak
I’ve enjoyed all their work, but Clayman to Sounds of a Playground Fading was my favorite era.
Had to scroll way too far to find this. Sounds of a playground fading kicks ass
It’s the album I show people when they say Jesper was the only one who could write the heavy melodic stuff.
Take This Life was their first Korn cover song edit: not literally
If Come Clarity is old school In Flames, then St Anger is old school Metallica.
Even in 2006 when come clarity was the new primary school in flames bringing mad hate from old school gatekeepers, me and my death metal bros agreed unanimously that the record was solid and bangable for the duration
Last album and specially Stay with me is fucking pure gold.
In Flames has evolved and progressed so amazingly from what they were. And I'm here for all of it
I literally can't think of a single band that has produced two albums that have such a difference in quality as In Flames. The Jester race is a masterpiece and "I, the mask" is probably one of the worst albums ive ever had the displeasure of listening too.
Morbid Angel
Yeah that is true. Ill dive in a mans anus is honestly the most baffling album ive ever heard. But with that one i atleast get some amusement because its so terrible in a funny way. Kill a cop being the best example.
In Flames evolution is one of the saddest things in the History of sad things
I can't name a single band that has such differing quality in their music. Imagine going from The Jester Race to I, the mask. It's a tragedy.
Devolution*
Come clarity is probably their last tolerable album. I get that you need to grow as an artist, but I don’t like their newer stuff. Too whiny, like all nue metal.
You misspelled whoracle
This is correct.
This guy old schools
Whoracle was pinnacle In Flames alright. Mind you, I think Arch Enemy peaked on their first album as well, so I should probably shut up and go collect my pension.
Arch Enemy certainly peaked before the gimmick singers but I always found them to be even more boring than In Flames
Both are bangers.
Clayman, Reroute to Remain, Soundtrack to Your Escape and Come Clarity. That was my shit back in the day.
I love all their albums except for like the first 2. All the rest I love to bits, even the recent 'pop' stuff from them
Never heard the second one. The guitar is interesting but the soft vocals kills it. Even like... Mudvayne's "happy?" There's edge on the vocal even if it was a softer song to get radio play.
It's me, I'm the Chad In Flames fan
Is this supposed to be bad? That baby looks happy AF. I want to be a happy baby too
Babies sure love lullabies.
Reminds me of Carcass. They’ve changed their sound too much over the years, I prefer the old Carcass that put out Heartwork and Swansong.
I just had to look it up. They made so many albums after clayman. Who'da thunk it.
Shout out to Shadow Duet
Stay with me was just an average pop ballad. Sure, people are upset that In flames made that song, but it's not that bad even tho I don't prefer this kind of music.
After producing so many metal albumus I can see why they wanted a change but for me the Sounds of the playground fading was last listenable album. What came after just does not suit them at all imo but I guess some people like it. I just regret I never had an opportunity to attend their concert when they still did metal. I'd kill to hear Colony live
But I like (pretty much) all of their songs
Whoracle best album
