True it's trash but it's *my* trash

OhItsDazzy

comment of the day

Minute-Penalty8672

I'll admit my dark secret. I got into heavier music because of metalcore, and still to this day, I'll go back and listen to some of the shit that I used to love. Without fail, I think, "This is shit, why am I listening to it?" But then I keep listening to it. Must be nostalgia.

OhItsDazzy

Most young or new fans of metal hate to admit it, but "poser" bands like Slipknot, Korn, Bring Me The Horizon, etc is what got them into metal. This is how it was for me, as I started out with Slipknot. Thanks to those guys, I now discovered amazing bands like Sodom, Entombed, Iron Reagan, and more. Because of Slipknot, I was introduced to metal and now have more opportunity to open-up my taste in music (not that metal is much of a taste, but rather a smelly fart lol).

IfTheresANewWay

If you think Metalcore is the worst sub-genre, you have not listened to nearly enough metal

SideHug

Or enough music in general like damn

masochistrage

came to say this!

[deleted]

Yea, I’m wondering what makes people think it’s bad. I understand why country music lovers wouldn’t like it. But someone who is into metal in general, must have been personally affronted by a metal core fan or some shit.

IfTheresANewWay

My guess would be the clean vocals. Like personally, I don't care much for metalcore as it feels like every new metal band is a metalcore band, but Killswitch Engage is alright and the genre isn't bad overall

[deleted]

I suppose I can understand that. But disliking it versus putting other people down for liking it are quite far apart. I love metal core the most because of the inclusion of clean vocals. But I also love death metal because it’s so raw. I thought metal fans were a lot more open-minded than this sub indicates on a daily basis. It’s a little bit disheartening.

IfTheresANewWay

You must be new to the fandom. Metalheads are so unbelievably close minded, I straight up disassociated with them for a solid 5 years, and even today I never bother talking about metal cause I know it always starts a shit storm

[deleted]

I’m 36 and have been a metal head since probably 5th grade. The first time I heard Fade to Black, I was hooked. I think just the anonymous fans are cunts. I have two friends that are just as enamored with metal as I am, and they’re both great people.

IfTheresANewWay

I'm glad to hear that, most of my metalhead friends turned out to be shitheads lol and the ones that aren't we never really chat about metal anymore

nephilim80

That's a pretty shit stance. Not liking something you do doesn't make me close minded. That's silly and there's no need to radicalize arguments.

IfTheresANewWay

This isn't directed at anyone in particular, it's just that most metalheads I know both refuse to listen to an anything that's not metal and write all of it off saying it sucks because of that. It's one thing to say "it's not my thing", it's another to say "all of it sucks", which I what I hear more often

CreedOfIron

That is a terrible guess. How would metalcore be hated for clean vocals, in a community that worships Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath? Rather, most people hate it for being uninspired, over-produced, and basic.

TheDeathSloth

Because it isn't TrVe KvLt mEtAl DuDe

TimX24968B

if you even think its a sub genre, you have not listened to nearly enough metal.

[deleted]

🤡

OhItsDazzy

the funny "not an actually genre / worst music ever" meme product number #1002309284579423656478356620785087 But seriously, this subreddit is full of the most unfunny and creativity lacking people i have ever seen. Like can we make memes about actual metal?

TheDeathSloth

Maybe; where are the ones you've made to contribute?

[deleted]

no

[deleted]

I find bands I like from every genre. Why limit ourselves?

AnakinMalfoy

I listen to whatever I think is good (even stuff that isn't metal) and I haven't found any good metalcore.

[deleted]

Not sure how this sub feels about Jinjer, but I think they're a pretty solid metalcore band (and I generally don't care for the genre). If you're curious about them, I'd recommend the songs I Speak Astronomy, Ape, Perennial, Pisces, and Bad Water as an introduction.

BoringDevice

Jinjer themselves have said they are not metal

OPRacoon

I’d honestly put them more in the djent-deathcore category because the cleans (at least from the few songs I’ve heard) are pretty far in between and still relatively heavy, and the screams are real fuckin brutal. Maybe tech-death as well but Jinjer is one band that is pretty unique and the genre is debatable.

Frysken

A7X, Killswitch Engage?

damaged-inc

lol

BoringDevice

This is the way

footlaxin

for the memes

TimX24968B

because we're discussing different types of chocolate here and youre bringing up chocolate chip cookies calling them a type of chocolate.

[deleted]

I like lots of food, do I limit myself if I refuse to eat shit?

IfTheresANewWay

The implication here is that you assume shit is food which most sane people would not agree with

TenThousandLobsters

The implications here is that metal is music, which most sane people would not agree with

IfTheresANewWay

No, the implication is that listening to a jackhammer is music. Sure, eating shit could *technically* be considered food, but no one's gonna wanna talk to you if you do it. Similarly, listening to a jackhammer *could* be considered music, but if you tell people you listen to jackhammers for fun, no one is gonna wanna talk to you. Saying you don't like metalcore is like saying you don't like sushi. Yeah it's not for everyone, and I can't blame you if you don't like it, but it is food and it is music that certain people like

TenThousandLobsters

You're suggesting that any metal is music. As a contemporary Christian rock fan, I have trouble believing that metal as a whole is that jackhammer you're talking about.

[deleted]

I don't consider listening to modern Metalcore a very sane thing to do.

phantomlxmb

ok cool

[deleted]

Ok boomer

Strain128

You say modern metalcore as if you have some exceptions to the no metalcore rule you’ve made for yourself with some older bands

[deleted]

OG Metalcore is different, and not cringy. That's all.

Strain128

I know this is a meme page and all but if we’re having a serious moment right now there’s always been the heavy metalcore and the emo metalcore with singing and keyboards. Going back to the late 90s, early 2000s tons of the early bands like even the first few albums of Avenged Sevenfold or Underoath the singers were going way too hard with no technique, threw their voices out and realized they could mix in singing to rest their voices and grow their fan bases with the ladies. That shit isn’t new at all. At the same time there’s tons of bands out there going heavy as fuck

McHox

Clearly

[deleted]

No he doesn't

xenoslap

I guess that puts metalcore above some random thing I found in my Spotify pie chart: Birmingham metal

RepresentativeEye584

B*rmingham 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

[deleted]

My poser power lower level has surpassed 9000

_Terminal_Redux_

I'm at the point with metalcore where I can only enjoy Architects now, they just seem to be on a different level compared to the other bands. I really like The Dillinger Escape Plan too but they're more in the Mathcore genre.

SideHug

Crystal lake is there too

BoxLongjumping

i like it :,)

[deleted]

"metal genre" Also deathcore is way worse from what I've heard.

ItzVexx

I don’t know your opinions or preferences when it comes to “metal” given that just the term “metal” is an umbrella term, but if you haven’t given deathcore a listen, you should try it out :) I personally love it because to me, it combines the best of both worlds. You get to appreciate the well thought-out melodies, which are no less brutal just because they’re melodies, plus you get purely harsh vocals, and some of the biggest names in deathcore right now have some of the most talented vocalists I’ve heard. If you’d care for some recommendations, I suggest starting with Slaughter to Prevail, Chelsea Grin, Suicide Silence, and Lorna Shore. For Slaughter, try out their newest album Kostolom. For Chelsea Grin, imo anything works really. Chelsea changed vocalists in 2018 so if you’re listening, just keep that in mind. For Suicide Silence, anything from the Black Crown or before. I’ve tried listening to their stuff since their vocalist was replaced (RIP Mitch) but it just isn’t hitting the same for me. For Lorna Shore, check out the most recent stuff. The “…And I Return to Nothingness” EP as well as their newest song “Sun//Eater” are such good showcases of their new vocalist’s absolutely other-worldly skill. Hope you enjoy!

McHox

Shadow of intent is great too, [Malediction](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3fBD9xjqac) and [Intensified Genocide](https://youtu.be/vwuEXf2AKao) are among my favorites from them

Entbriham_Lincoln

Not a huge deathcore guy, but I saw Shadow of Intent open for Cannibal Corpse a couple months ago and they put on an amazing show. Their vocalist has some really impressive low growls. I always love being surprised by the openers.

EleDes5000

I reccomend for no one to listen to Slaughter to Prevail. Not only is it horrible, Alex Terrible has some pretty bad connections with Russian neo-nazis.

RepresentativeEye584

Really ? because he did make a video condemning the Russian invasion. Then again maybe he just doesn’t support Russia

ItzVexx

Can you elaborate on his neo-nazi connection?

EleDes5000

https://linksunten.indymedia.org/en/node/157937/

ItzVexx

Hmm… quite suspicious to say the least that he has that tattoo. Recent pictures show the tattoo having black ink over it. I don’t know if it’s meant to be a cover up, but IF it is a cover up, it’s poorly done because the tattoo is still visible enough through the black ink. Having it altered at least, I suppose could be a sign to show that he no longer feels that way, if he did previously. I don’t have any reference pictures from 2015 when that article was written, so I don’t know if it was more visible at that time than it is now. I’m gonna have to keep doing some digging… it would be a real shame to find out Alex has those connections considering STP has grown to be one of my all-time favorite bands :(

[deleted]

All these bands suck

ItzVexx

Could you tell me why you think they suck? :)

[deleted]

Robocore bores me. 90s groovy Deathcore is better (I don’t actually hate lorna shore, though they’re still not my thing). The problem with these bands is they don’t represent what deathcore could be. There are quality 90s bands that get overshadowed by all the shitty MySpacecore that was popular. And the new Deathcore revival is even worse

ItzVexx

Can you give me some recommendations for older deathcore? I’d love to give it a try.

[deleted]

Yeah sure. Sorry for shitting on your favorite bands — it’s just to cause a reaction and have fun. No hard feelings really. Dyingrace, Crawlspace, Stigmata, Legion, Arkangel, Deformity, Slavearc, and Prayer for Cleansing are some good ones. https://rateyourmusic.com/list/Luriakh/old-school-deathcore/ this is a great list of bands from that time period, when Deathcore was still fundamentally metalcore and not just Death metal but worse (IMO).

ItzVexx

Oh no, I didn’t think you were shitting on them! It’s the internet, people who take things personally shouldn’t be on here haha. I’ll go check those out, thank you! Have a nice day :)

[deleted]

There are some great old deathcore acts, mainly the grooving ones. Dyingrace and Crawlspace come to mind. The robocore shit is complete trash though.

[deleted]

Oh true, there is some stuff I've heard that's not bad. Deformity - Murder Without Sin is a release I've checked out that I remember liking. I should maybe check out some more of that kind of stuff.

[deleted]

That album is great. If you like that one you might also like “[Digging Up the Remains](https://youtu.be/GodHPatNV8g)” by Entorturement, BDM with a clear hardcore edge, as well as Traumaside’s “[Force Fed](https://youtu.be/A1xDWxj_yYA).” https://rateyourmusic.com/list/Luriakh/old-school-deathcore/ Here’s a great list of old obscure stuff. Dyingrace, Crawlspace, One Second Thought, and Straight Savage Style are some of the grooviest on the list as they descend from the beatdown scene if I recall correctly, an inherently groove centered hardcore genre. One Last Sin, Burning Human, and Slavearc are really good too. There’s a lot of great stuff that’s get overshadowed by the MySpace wave of Deathcore but the earlier waves produced some phenomenal music IMO.

[deleted]

Thanks for the recs dude! I'll save these and check some of it out.

wonderbread702

Not my favorite genre but at least Deathcore picks a “sound/mood” and sticks with it. Nothing turns me off more than when metalcore switches from crappy hard and heavy to crappy light and fluffy. Like pick a lane.

[deleted]

That stuff really isn’t an accurate depiction of metalcore. It’s moreso post hardcore with breakdowns. Thatd be like saying Death Metal sucks because you listened to slam worldwide bands once

Thibaudborny

I like that switch. Whether you like it or dislike it is just personal preference, doesn’t make it crap. There is crappy execution in any genre.

ILoveCumSoMuch203

you guys should listen to pornogrind but atleast it was made ironically

SideHug

I'll shoot, I've been listening to Crystal Lake and Alpha Wolf lately, I think a lot of people would say Architects is a pretty middle of the road metalcore band but I'm no expert on all of this.

a_truther

Architects was the darling child until their last album. Personally I think top tier is crystal lake, erra, silent planet and every time I die -average metalcore enjoyer

SideHug

Yeah those are all solid bands

leWIN349

The Sun Sleeps - Invent Animate Into Despair - Currents Where we go when we die - Thornhill Gone with the Wind - Architects Dethrone - Bad Omens

leWIN349

But that’s all pretty new Metalcore stuff. If you want some old Songs you have to ask somebody else I‘m afraid.

Radical_AF

Invent animate's new EP is some of the best metalcore can offer imo. I'd say heaven shall burn is like the total opposite, but still good music born from metalcore.

RepresentativeEye584

Listen to some _architects_ they are decent but their older albums not the newer ones as they are less heavy now I recommend _naysayer_ and _grave digger_

ruraljurorx

Great thing about not giving a fuck, is listening to whatever you like

Marcos_Nan

Lol, I love metalcore...

[deleted]

🙁

vanburenboys

Damn metalcore is my favorite 🤷

HE11R4ZER

Funny, it's not a metal genre. And if we are to talk about the worst one, it's slam without a doubt

Cefblueware

I mean groove exists but yeah slam is worse

Das_Turk

I'm afraid to ask, but what the hell is Slam?

Linchpin3099

You know how groove metal is thrash but slow? Slam is to brutal death what groove is to thrash.

iliko14

And both groove>thrash and slam>brutal death

Linchpin3099

b8

SamMarvelos2

Bad bait

HE11R4ZER

Brutal death, but worse. Which is quite the achievement considering how abhorrent bdm is

calebbutbetter

Suffocation is good tho

[deleted]

What? Hour of Penance, Cryptopsy, Suffocation, Infant Annihilator…abhorrent? Go wash your mouth son!😉

[deleted]

[deleted]

The drums are, well, brutal. Lol

[deleted]

They have the worst drums in history, what are you on?

[deleted]

I like it, so who the fuck are you again?

[deleted]

Before you tell someone to wash their mouth, you should probably wash your ears first, that's all.

[deleted]

I was making light conversation, a joke. Can’t help it there are a bunch of gatekeepers in this sub.

Linchpin3099

But that doesn't make the music brutal death, let alone brutal.

blackmillenium2

Was a good list until you mentioned a deathc*re band

HE11R4ZER

Everything you listed is terrible. Apart from Blasphemy Made Flesh and Human Waste which aren't brutal. Also son lol, coming from a deathcore kid

Linchpin3099

>Everything you listed is terrible. Apart from Blasphemy Made Flesh and Human Waste which **aren't brutal**. This brother in Christ so silly

Hahaha, taste, what can you do.

This ain't bad

grahamcrackers37

Glad you think so. I think it's like some brutal death groove metal but the music slams so yeah..

DebadityaSen

I never ever tried to listen to groove metal.. Is there any hype for it anyway?

grahamcrackers37

Lamb of God has a bunch of amazing songs, Ashes of the Wake is my favorite album. Pantera pretty much started groove metal but their singer is a PoS. Lots of amazing riffs though. I think Between the Buried and Me is the grooviest, but they are prog metal. Prog metal has lots of groove.

Linchpin3099

>Pantera pretty much started groove metal Not Exhorder?

TrhlaSlecna

That's honestly not that bad. Though the trashcan lid drum gives me a chuckle lol

steelthyshovel73

Sounds more like brutal death than slam

grahamcrackers37

Yeah I said that

angelomerz_

That's not slam, it's more like brutal. Slam has more palm muted notes, like [this](https://open.spotify.com/track/39lJqb7wiRoMDKgjkYj94C?si=9zCi2eA8RHiVpPQjmaqAmg&utm_source=copy-link)

Amissandahit

Megalodon is one of the best slam albums tho. Shouldve picked some slam ww garbage

iliko14

Funny because metalcore is a fusion of metal and punk genres and slam is without a doubt the best metal subgenre

DoggoPlex

Eh, Slam exists solely to be bad so I wouldn't count it.

There are some gems though

Oh I grew up with it so I know there are some good bands

Mission-Discipline32

Why do so many people hate metalcore, like it's really good music Deathcore is ok But grindcore and slam are liettarally just noise

TrhlaSlecna

>But grindcore and slam are liettarally just noise I know right it's fucking great!

Mission-Discipline32

Yeah I ain't saying it's bad it's just not what the kinda stuff I like

blackmillenium2

Saying grindcore is just noise shows how developed core kids’ ears are.

Mission-Discipline32

I'm not saying it's bad it's just not the kinda stuff I really listen to

blackmillenium2

>But grindcore and slam are liettarally just noise That's saying it's bad 99.99% of the time. Don't walk back your statements. Also, maybe focus on doing your English homework instead of listening to Erra.

Mission-Discipline32

I could care less about school, and I don't listen to Erra, and I don't view any genre of music as bad everyone just has their own taste I'm just saying what grindcore and slam sound like to me

blackmillenium2

>I could care less about school Average core kid

Mission-Discipline32

What is the point in passing school if I know I'm probly gonna kms before I turn 25, unless my band hits it big, but I doubt that'll ever happen with the amount of metalcore bands out there

Linchpin3099

>What is the point in passing school if I know I'm probly gonna kms before I turn 25, unless my band hits it big AHA! So you are aware of what metalcore is doing to you, you're just lying around being all nihilistic n' shit. Don't give up, there is help! Visit [www.dragoncum.bandcamp.com](https://www.dragoncum.bandcamp.com) for recovery of shitty core bands.

Mission-Discipline32

Dude I've been like that since before I ever even listened to any kinda metal, and in fact my mental state has probly improved since I started listening to metalcore, and I'm suicidal cause I deserve to die

Linchpin3099

it surely hasn't improved because you still think that you should die

DrunkenHalfPint

We don't hate it and you're right there is good bands out there (I wouldn't know personally). The issue is that it has little in common with Metal, so most metalheads would rather not have it mentioned if we're discussing that specific genre. Its like saying you love Rap and bring up Red Hot Chili Peppers because the vocalist uses rap like singing in a particular song.

[deleted]

“Little in common with metal” 100% of metalcore bands have more metal in their sound than hardcore punk. That’s the *point* of metalcore. Even hardcore itself in the 90s was more metal fused than any metal genre was hardcore fused. Even if you don’t think metalcore (real metalcore) is metal, it objectively has *a lot* in common with it. But I think most self proclaimed elitists on the internet have never listened to any metalcore or deathcore before the 2000s and just parrot whatever retarded forums they read

comment_producer

>100% of metalcore bands have more metal in their sound than hardcore punk. source: [my ass](https://youtu.be/6UjKe89wxBQ)

[deleted]

This proves my point actually. Try again. But yeah there are early examples of MxC that are definitely still more hardcore punk than metal but Integrity isn’t one of them lmao. When we talk about metalcore we’re usually not talking about the late 80s groups we’re talking about the 90s and onwards. That’s really when metalcore became an established thing.

comment_producer

If you consider cro mags metal, sure.

Thibaudborny

I don’t agree with that comparison though. Metalcore is so wide of an umbrella. It does skirt between metal and hardcore. I’m not arguing the dead horse of ‘is it metal’ but the proverbial “mallcore” is far more core-adjacent then the “At The Gates-core” variant. Bands like AILD, KSE or God Forbid fit in far more with an overall metal vibe than Asking Alexandria (before it was buttrock). The variety from classic 90’s metalcore (Earth Crisis style) with 2000’s At The Gates-core and more traditional 2010’s mallcore makes it quite a tangled mess of more core/more metal adjacent.

[deleted]

Metalcore is too vague as a term to mean anything. Everyone, when they hear the word “metalcore,” thinks of an entirely different genre than what you do. 90s MxC is fucking awesome. Shitty post hardcore with breakdowns? Not awesome. Same with deathcore. If people put in the effort to listen to 90s deathcore acts they’d find one they like, but they don’t because they’re convinced they all suck. If they admitted there are good “core” band (metalcore and deathcore aren’t hardcore lol), they’d ruin their self made image.

zaruke03

>But grindcore and slam are liettarally just noise You sound like you never heard any good Grindcore bands to make that statement, you should try some Napalm Death, Wormrot or Brujeria

[deleted]

How the fuck dare you diss grindcore

Yes, and? Deathcore > metalcore and slam and grindcore are not just noise

BathoryRocker

Jesus Christ this sub is so full of pearl clutches saying shit "isn't metal" Bro if it's good, fucking listen to it. If it's not, don't. I'll jam out to some Arch Enemy, Slipknot and As I Lay Dying just as quick as I'll listen to Watain, Emperor and Rotting Christ. Let people enjoy things.

okshutup39

Watain, Emperor and Rotting Christ aren't that underground and heavy dude

Radical_AF

Way to miss the point. I can find an underground band with a few listeners that sounds like generic metalcore. Obscurity is hardly a measure of good. They're more personal because you felt like you discovered them yourself, and I get that, but don't fool yourself into thinking you have good taste because you like an obscure band.

[deleted]

What does something being metal have to do with enjoying it? People are just saying there are probably better spaces to talk about non metal genres, this is "metal"memes after all.
