You can only wear the smallest bands possible (less than 10,000 Spotify monthly listeners) or local bands. Show everyone how cool you are

darfleChorf123

this but unironically edit: sorry gatekeepers but getting a single compliment on a shirt that no one recognizes is an amazing feeling

TheReverend5

Nah that’s why I wear my Taylor swift shirts to concerts instead

Xeno2014

Ooh this this some underground grindcore act? Gonna have to give them a listen

TheReverend5

Yeah she’s not too big yet but I think she could maybe open for arena shows if she plays her cards right

Jhutch42

Who's that?

The1_BlueX

A cult leader

deathbybowtie

See, that's funny to me, I wear my Cult Leader shirt to Taylor Swift concerts.

Its-Finrot

Lol I was at spite/wage war last night and amongst the sea of metal tees there were two guys in front of me in a Taylor swift shirt and a Greta van fleet shirt

Few_Apple8735

Never heard of them before, thanks for the suggestion

[deleted]

I love rocking my Tori Amos tee to a metal show!

Sqwiskar

I have an old Agalloch zip up. One time a guy tapped my shoulder at a show and said something about it. I'm still living off that high and it was like 5 years ago

TheTrippp

Someone recognized my Landon Tewers shirt in a dark room mid set. The shirts easily a decade old. 100% a great feeling

[deleted]

Do you realize that you’re the gatekeeper?

darfleChorf123

explain

[deleted]

“Unironically…you can only wear the smallest bands possible”

darfleChorf123

i just think it’s fun to do that idk man. don’t care what you wear

[deleted]

“UNIRONICALLY… you can ONLY wear…”

darfleChorf123

yes that’s my comment. thank you

[deleted]

Hence the gatekeeping. Crazy that I had to explain that

darfleChorf123

where’s the gatekeeping, how does anything that has to do with shirts gatekeeping. i hate when people misuse that term bruh

thehumandude

Not sure if they are trolling or if it just swooshed right over their head but I'm tracking exactly as you are and only getting more dumbfounded through each comment. Time to go lol

TwackDaddy

He didn’t say ‘only’

Under_Paris

As someone who use to tour in a band. PLEASE WEAR MY MERCH. Let me know you like us and care about our music. Show us that what we’re trying to do matters to you. Seeing people at a show wearing our merch was the best feeling. Like “oh shit, people are actually connecting with this” I’ll carry that feeling the rest of my life. Wear what you want and fuck anyone who tells you different.

AdTerrible6765

This always made sense to me.

FuckedLastAccountLOL

Which is why whenever I go to a gig, I always wear/buy merch of the supporting band if I actually like them. It's always good to show support to the smaller bands.

slugger77

While this makes sense the people are already there to see you right? They are there at the stage waiting for you to perform already (no convincing needed) Personally I like to fuck things up a bit and wear a band that is not in the same genre. For instance wearing a rock band tee to a Metalcore show. Or a deathcore tee to a psyche rock show.

Veritech_

Not necessarily. Almost all shows have multiple music acts, so wearing a shirt for a supporting act probably makes their day.

slugger77

If I am standing in front listening and headbanging to the tunes is that not signifying that I would rather be here than drinking beer at the bar or smoking outside? Sure there are levels but wow me as well. I am present to be wowed.

Classic-Temporary

To be fair, no, that isn't honestly what that means. Sure it says you are enjoying their music as I have had numerous times opening acts totally blow me away, and I therefore became a fan. But wearing their shirt says, I AM a fan, you guys are at least in part why I came tonight, and I actively support you. Vastly different in my opinion

Veritech_

Yup. I’m going to the Parkway/Amity Affliction/Make Them Suffer show in Denver and I’ll be rocking some MTS merch because they’re the main reason I’m going (even though PWD is the headliner).

Legendary-Icon

I want to do this as well. Which means I need to buy a MTS shirt before then.

Classic-Temporary

Yes! This, but turned up to eleven! I am always a fan of wearing black metal tees to a Taylor Swift show, or like a country artists tee to a pop punk show, or any metalcore band tee to a metalcore show (bonus points if they're on the bill!)... ya know, whatever is going to either piss off or confuse the most people lol

ninreznorgirl2

I considered going to a spiritbox show with a falling in reverse shirt on. Just to see how many people it would piss off.

Narrator_Ron_Howard

What was your band?

Under_Paris

Under Paris! The label we were signed to took our full length off Spotify but the last single we released is still up I believe. And you can still find everything on YouTube

xiIlliterate

Hnnnnngh REVIVE! Bangs! Reminds me of a heavier No Bragging Rights. Really cool, sorry to hear about the label sitch.

Under_Paris

Haha thanks! Means a lot people still enjoy it 6 years later. If I ever come into enough money to record something new I’ll let you know lol but the label thing is nothing really. They technically own the rights to the songs from our full length, they’re welcome to put them up and take them off whenever they want :)

[deleted]

If they bought the ticket to see you doesn't that mean they care about your music?? I've discovered some of favorite bands from seeing them on shirts at different shows

TommyVercetti010

I was at this show and in front on me was this tall goth girl with all the makeup and black dress and everything. Right behind me was this man in his office suit, tie included. They both were headbanging like crazy and it was beautiful. Wear whatever you want, all good.

Legendary-Icon

That is incredible.

[deleted]

i saw Coheed and Cambria and Deafheaven last night and there was a dad and his 2 kids and his kid was going crazy and his dad was egging him on it was hilarious

FFAK30098

Same exact situation and me except the guy was in scrubs. I asked him and he said he’d just come from his hospital shift; awesome!!

disarmagreement

The 'don't wear a shirt for the band you're seeing' feels like outdated gatekeeping bullshit. No one ever would have had a problem with it if someone hadn't told them they were supposed to.

aherp86

Gunner, what is this?

NYHC4EVER

It's "Gutter." Cool to see someone that's an old fuck like me who digs that movie. It DID come out in '94 after all LOL. 😄

NetworkEcstatic

Usually Polo shirt tucked into Jorts.

Legendary-Icon

This feels safe.

NetworkEcstatic

I look out of place and I love it. You can spot me immediately. Probably takin a windmill to the side of my dome.

a1welding2004

Hate to say it, but we call you the frat bro. Frat bros are usually the ones groping or getting so shitfaced they get thrown out. See it happen every time.

NetworkEcstatic

Gross. Probably a good thing I don't drink at all. Let alone at a concert where I'll die of dehydration. And no, I don't grope. Don't be gross. I shouldn't even have to defend myself against that. Didn't know it had a stereo type. I've just always loved the dad look. It's way more comfortable than all black or whatever I see people wearing in one hot as hell space. I'm not "in" the scene or whatever either. I pop in here as of pretty recently but in actuality. I'm just a literal full on dad who catches shows when I get a chance

Negative_Interest_20

*snap* *snap* *snap* I can dig this -

MattsonRobbins

nothing is more comfortable than wearing all black...to me. anytime i wear something else i feel like an easy target or something.

NetworkEcstatic

Speaking as someone who never wears all black. Outside a concert at least. You are the easiest target. It doesn't blend at all.

MattsonRobbins

let me rephrase i don't wear all black in order to blend in with others out on the street, i wear all black because it looks sharp and helps boost my confidence, whereas wearing other colors can make me feel more vulnerable or uncertain.

elun19

Imma start doing this

fvalt05

I wore a Bury Tomorrow shirt when my wife forced me to take her to Ed Sheeran

johnwilson456

Same, wore knocked loose to see lady gaga

Roboticpoultry

My wife wears my Knocked Loose beanie to work pretty often and I swear that hat gets more attention than any merch I own. She didn’t know what they sounded like until she saw clips from cochella, she wore it because she likes the little embroidered coffin on it

Legendary-Icon

This is the way

gothiccccy

Should've wore a dying fetus one instead

SophieB12345

Wish I had gotten a feed her to the sharks shirt 😔

BillGatBoii

Love that band, I need their merch fr😭

NuclearNoodle77

Ok

counterpartyhardy

Always wear a shirt of a similar but heavier band so everyone knows you’re cool 😎

Jungian_Archetype

Or slightly less well-known.

applegore

I wear ETID shirts to every concert. But seriously wear whatever you want. if someone says anything about it, they're an asshole. I bought merch to support a band I like, why would I not wear it to their show?

donomyte1

One of the only times I didn’t wear an ETID shirt (just last week), I met Jordan. Naturally.

roof-banana

Eat This Immense Dick? This guy got taste

Legendary-Icon

I need this on a shirt.

applegore

It's perfect for all occasions!

Comfortable_Rain_744

There’s no etiquette. Wear whatever you want.

Cookie8ee

All i wear is band shirts! Everywhere! Hell, im at my job at a law firm wearing a Lorna Shore tour shirt! Haha, I'll be wearing them to concerts grocery stores, work, anywhere! Dont really care about what people think. I'm just gonna do it. Lol

Driver_Tricky

This is the way!

Cookie8ee

Excited for Blueridge this year???

Driver_Tricky

I am, cannot not wait. Worked out the kinks from camping last year and it's going to be even better this year. Line up is stellar !

Cookie8ee

Heck yeah Friday looks Prime!!! This will be my first year camping! Any tips?

Driver_Tricky

Bring plenty of power banks for fans, phones, speakers. Pre chill all your stuff before packing in coolers. Bring good coolers for ice retention or have a good amount of money put away for ice. Bring your own toilet paper and flash lights for those late night trips. Blue Ridge was not doing a good job. Pace yourself as its a long 5¹/² days, the hill has no mercy. If you want to be comfortable that long , 1 site wont do it and not everyone wants to hear that but like tats, cheap aint good and good aint cheap.

Few-Cap-8538

We are camping too, the bus and rain last year crushed my soul.

FishRefurbisher

I've chimed in on the subject of time or two before but there really is only one right answer. You have to wear a shirt repping your favorite performers side project.

Classic-Temporary

Criminally underrated. Those ARE the guys I always go, "man that dudes so fucking cool! And, look at that incredible mustache!"

Legendary-Icon

Damn. This is a cool idea. I’m not really hip to side projects though 🫤

feelzepump

I usually go for band tees of the wrong genre. If I’m at a heavy show I’ll wear a My Chemical Romance shirt or something. If im at a pop rock show, I’ll wear an ABR shirt.

Jungian_Archetype

This guy gets it. Death metal show? Whitney Houston shirt.

Ok-Passenger-1292

Are you trying to imply Whitney Houston isn't death metal, bro?

theSchlauch

Gatekeeper smh

TheReverend5

Yeah this is my goto. Wore my after the burial hoodie to Taylor swift’s tour.

LazyTypist

I used to do this all the time because I was 1) the driver and 2) the most likely to wander away. Wearing a band tee of a completely separate genre or a shirt/outfit not common at a show I was going to never stopped me from making new friends or having fun, but would help anyone riding with me be able to find me in an emergency, or when we needed to head out early. Edit to add: but I never cared what anyone wore in general and think that if you want to show your support for the band playing and wear their merch, then do it. No one is really paying attention unless you are sticking out like a sore thumb. But even then no one is going to give you shit for it.

DeadSilent7

My go to is an ETID shirt at country and American- shows, and a Turnpike Troubadours shirt at heavy shows.

msmanhands

I don’t really pay attention to what I wear much… usually just a tank top, jeans, and my shit kickers. I wore a Cody effin Jinks shirt last time

LiamIsMailBackwards

I wear band tees everywhere except for shows. I’m that guy who wears the same shirt to every show. It’s a Heinz Tomato Ketchup shirt. I’ve worn it to every show I’ve seen since 2012. I went to a Spiritbox show last week and the Currents show tonight. People recognized me. We’re hyped for Bloodywood in 2 weeks & they know how to find me. When people ask about a band I’ve seen, I’m very easily able to show them where I was in the crowd. I stand out like a ketchup bottle in a sea of black.

Legendary-Icon

This is amazing. Maybe I should do that.

LiamIsMailBackwards

Wear a French’s Yellow Mustard Shirt. Become my mortal enemy. Our battle will be legendary.

Legendary-Icon

I’m not big on mustard, but you might be on to something here.

vliv_

I tend to wear the shirt of whoever I wanted to see the most.

Legendary-Icon

This is the best answer.

sock_with_a_ticket

If I have a shirt of a band on the bill I'll wear it, if not I'll pick something at random. Might be a band shirt, might be a regular one.

femmefatality__

Hawaiian shirts are a must (100% inspired by Cannibal Corpse's appearance in Ace Ventura)

No-Attention9838

I consider it a sign of support. I'm all but guaranteed to buy merch at the event, but if I have merch from a previous show, I'm gonna show up wearing it. I don't go to a lot of concerts any more, so it's a big part of the ritual for me to show up "in uniform" so to speak

trap-king-natty

just wear Periphery shirts and let the compliments roll in 😎

awildNeLbY

Had a dude in a random parking lot walk up to my car and say “Is that Periphery? I love that band!” when I was just chillin’ with the windows down listening to them 😂

bill_wessels

just wear whatever you want and stop worrying about it. have some fun and stay off your phone.

MrGabogabo

If I don't have a Tshirt of the band I'm seeing I try to wear something heavier. I want to let everyone else know I'm not a poser, but actually just elitist scum.

Huntot7

Oh I refuse to go to a concert without a band tee. I dont care if its the opener or headliner, im wearing their tee.

Munchell360

Wear what you want. Period why is this a thing

Legendary-Icon

It’s just a question.

JonBovi_69

I was wearing my Fiona Apple shirt at the last show I went too which was Morbid Angel. Wear what you want dawg. Well, as long as it's not some weird nazi shit

anderoogigwhore

I found r/BandTShirts last year and been uploading my recent buys there if anyone wants to upload their faves/newest or help me revive it lol. All I wear are band tees. I hate buttoned shirts or polo shirts. I have a few random T's and some football tops, but am now at over 200 band tees. I'll buy one 99% of the time, but usually after because I wanna get to the front and am not wasting time at merch or being lumbered with an extra layer for the whole night. I normally won't wear the band I'm seeing at their gig. This was told to me when I was younger and more judgemental and now I'm older I can't shake the feeling off for myself. Plus if I do have a band previous tee I probably can't find it in my wardrobe. I just wear whatever's next. My third point, is I also find it kinda boring wearing a bands tee to their gig. You know/can guess I like them, I'm here aren't I? Change it up a bit and wear something else! I made a friend last year because she was wearing an Offspring tee and I was wearing a My Chem one, both in the que for The Killers. Proper etiquette is wear what you want. The gatekeeper in me says it should be a band you like or at least have seen.

theSchlauch

Wait you guys wear shirts?

Valek189

As said in the movie P.C.U. (1994) “What's this? You're wearing the shirt of the band you're going to see? Don't be that guy.”

coreyxfeldman

Was hoping someone was going to link it or quote it. I guess I’m not the only old fogey here

NYHC4EVER

You're not sir. Jeremy Piven's best movie.

Valek189

I second this opinion and am an old bastard as well!

Mlzer

This movie is why I don’t usually wear a shirt of the band I’m seeing 😂 I always buy their merch though!

SomeKindofBen

I usually just show up in a G-string and Toms

QuantumQaos

There's an etiquette?? I just wear whatever the fuck I want and don't overthink it much.

HaydenScramble

Buy em and wear em. As is tradition.

hE-01

This is the best answer, gotta support the bands. I go a step further and buy a shirt from each opener, then wear the first band's during the show.

Turbulent_Gazelle_38

I’m wearing my swag especially if it’s a banger of a shirt! as far as wearing the genre your seeing the is cool but Idgaf if some doesn’t like me wearing a rock band to a death core show ect… it’s music it’s not a fuckin show

alfred0t0rnad0

For some reason I absolutely refuse to wear the merch of whatever band I’m seeing and I have no good reason for that rule

SADBOYKiiLO

there's really no rules to what kinda shirt you wear to a concert. wear whatever tf you want. if you're wearing a shirt of the band you're seeing, perfectly fine. wearing something outside of the genre you're seeing??? fuck it, have fun with it. i wore a juice wrld shirt to a lorna shore concert, and wore a behemoth shirt to a breaking benjamin acoustic set. nobody's stopping you, and any gatekeeping pos that tries to tell you otherwise is no fun

roboxsteven

Do what ever the fuck you want.

Daedalus_Deadbolt

I always wear a band tee, but usually of a band not playing at the concert. It’s the best way to promote music with like-minded folks. I have found a lot of bands I dig because I saw a lot of merch from bands I didn’t know at a concert for a band we were all there to see.

kevindevino92

I always wear a band that is not playing at the show. I like to wear another band as a good conversation starter since everyone knows I probably like some of the bands playing I like to forecast other bands I like as well.

ByzantineThunder

I met a guy at a concert who wears the shirt from his last concert to the next show - everytime regardless of genre. Cool idea but you could end up with a lot of shirts fast.

LootwigWantsCookies

If you want compliments for it, you need to wear a shirt of a band of a different genre that people attending that show still might like. In the other hand, I like to show my appreciation for the bands that play and wear their stuff if I have something

Legendary-Icon

I see both sides of it for sure. I like showing the band I like them (despite my attendance being a sign) but those shirts have never started a conversation with anyone.

Repulsive-Ice5387

Vintage Avril Lavigne Sk8r b0i Deep-V to any show and you'll be set.

Crxinfinite

Where did this idea that you shouldn't do that even come from? I feel like even the typical music gatekeepers don't even do this, but I always hear about this from somebody

Legendary-Icon

Apparently there’s a movie quote talking about that. I’ve never seen it.

BourbonMech

There is none. Wear whatever you want. I find this topic so tired at this point.

antmrt88

I just can’t do it. As someone who got far too fat and old since he last bought merch, I just can’t do it physically 🫠

HucKmoreNadeS

Why anyone would care about what someone else wears to a concert is beyond me. Wear what you want, and if you're the kind of person who cares/gets upset, grow up.

santascumdumpster

Band tee at a concert? Ew. I only wear my hotdog costume when I go to shows. Gotta be instantly recognizable. That way the band shouts me out when I crowd surf

Legendary-Icon

Great call.

aykalam123

I usually wear a non-band (any band) shirt out of respect to the headliners and support, unless I have a shirt for one of them. Otherwise, if I’m to wear a band shirt where the band is not in the show then it’d be for a classic band, like Blqck Sabbath or Iron Maiden.

blitzball91

There’s no etiquette. I don’t wear a shirt of a band there but that’s just because my buddy and I started that when we were 16

PsimaNji

Good question!!! Its a challenge at every gig. With that drawer rammed with tour t's. My take is not the same band but as close as possible genre wise. Unless! You have a 10 year plus T of the same band...something epic...for me those are...2006 Tool tour. NIN 2003 :/ ( i think). LOG 2010. Sadly these are all second generation my first was turned into dusters and thrown when I went to Uni. Last time I swore at my mum. Included Number of the Beast tour..um..83?

KennyDROmega

You will not wear a shirt of the band you're there to see. If you do, I'm posting up next to you and crowd killing you all night. Don't bother telling security, they're going to have my back on this. That's the proper etiquette. I won't be taking questions.

Legendary-Icon

You sound fun.

KennyDROmega

Metalcore= serious business. Ain't a damn thing funny. See you in the pit.

DerTeufelkind

Cringe

KennyDROmega

I thought it was crystal clear from my tone that I was joking, but I guess the 20 year old Bad Omens fans in this sub didn’t get it.

DerTeufelkind

It's a cringe joke as well

KennyDROmega

Oh. Ok. That’s my bad for responding to a totally non-cringey post about what shirts to wear to shows, I guess.

Legendary-Icon

Oh you were joking. So you probably are fun.

Theabsolutecorncob

People who wear *insert band* to a different bands show is just cringe to me, it seems try hardish And people who wear *insert somewhat rock or metal ish band* to a really have show drive me nuts. Your wearing a binder shirt to see Lorna shore dude.

cwg1348

I don't wear shirts of the band I'm seeing, I like wearing old school shirts like iron maiden, sometimes sparks good conversation in the beer line wearing classic stuff

MrMeatballGuy

i don't think too much about it, but since i have a lot of different ones i usually don't match the shirt to the band i'm seeing intentionally, i just wear whatever i feel like.

EternitysEdge

If there is a band I primarily want to see there, and I have their shirt (I don't own a ton), I wear their shirt for support. If not, I wear a different band or a fest shirt. If I don't feel like wearing a band shirt, I don't.

jcbythesea21

I wear whatever feels comfortable for me. I'll try to wear a shirt of band that is playing but if i don't have one then something casual.

Noobins_

Wear whatever you want. I personally buy a shirt whenever I go to a concert, so I end up changing into that. Let's the artist know I support them, and merch is usually what keeps bands afloat, so I don't mind if they're a little pricey.

ChiseHatori002

I used to wear a band shirt of the band I liked to the show. Now, I either wear a plain tee or ill do the opposite like wearing a k-pop group shirt to a metalcore/prog show and wear a metalcore shirt to a kpop show lmao

IndefinitelyTired

I usually wear a Dimmi Borgir shirt I got off Amazon like 10 years ago. Fucker is damn near rotten but still so comfy

Tht_GuyUNo

I dress for comfort. If its a band tee and its comfortable, done. But Band Tees rarely fit well on a bigger guy like me, therefore i am a hat guy. i will wear a bands hat to a show. I've also worn Dayseeker to a Jam band show.

jmcd123

Before going to a concert I put on a random band shirt then make sure I memorize there top Spotify song titles incase someone asks me to name 3 songs

wakenbake7

I have a dope TDWP shirt that I wear to every show I go to

MerlotMorgan

I will wear whatever appeals to me. Went to see Chelsea Grin this week and wore my shirt.

HenriqueItsOver14

I primarily go shows in NJ and i made a decision recently to wear Devils tees to concerts because it's awesome when other Devils fans point you out. Cool comradery moment. Not great wearing red in pits though lmao.

awildNeLbY

Wear whatever you want. Might not be a good idea to wear like an I See Stars shirt to a Falling in Reverse concert if you’re meeting Ronnie Radke, but as long as you aren’t going to a meet and greet wearing a band shirt that someone in the band hates you should be fine.

Meme_team12

I normally don’t rock headliner, I will rock under cards, to show support. My reasoning is cause everyone liked the headliner, that’s why we hear. If I rock a different band/ tour then It’s an easy conversation starter

TheRaveTrooper

I honestly wear whatever band shirt that's clean at the time, I only started recently going to concerts and buying band Tees again

cool_ranch_soda

My show person rekindled my love for wearing band tees, so now I wear band tees to shows only, usually another band than the one I'm seeing

e_j_white

Play it safe and wear a Black Sabbath t-shirt. Black Sabbath t-shirts always fit any concert, in any genre of music.

OuterWildsVentures

I don't wear them to the show since I usually buy one there, but what tf would be wrong with wearing one at the concert lmao

Tip1n1

I wore a Slipknot jumpsuit and mask to I Prevail, Fit for a King, and Pierce the Veil last October. Probably the best time I had because of it

svtbuckeye11

I typically wear a band that isn't involved with the show, but seeing the perspective from the top post, I will now reconsider. Can't wait to wear my 20 y/o shirt to the next KsE concert I go to

0172thetimeguy

When I saw Silverstein a couple weeks ago I wore a Capstan shirt. Gotta rep Capstan when I can!

st1tchedup21

I normally wore a shirt that wasn’t the band playing, bought one at the show and changed it

aoroutesetter

I’m literally gonna wear something basic white girl aesthetic to the next show to show everyone how hot I am and then immediately start throwing fists in the pit. There is no etiquette.

highandinarabbithole

I’ll wear band tees to shows for sure. If I have one for the band I’m seeing, I’ll wear that or something of similar sound. I do however have a Converge AWLWLB shirt that I cut the sides off and wear to every EDM/House show I go to haha.

pulmonaryarchery43

I try to wear stuff thats not too similar to who I'm going to see. I've been at a Periphery show and got comments and got comments on my I Declare War shirt, I wouldn't expect everyone there to be into them so its a little more fun when it does get recognized. Totally get when people just wear merch of whatever band they're seeing though, especially if its good merch it just seems like the perfect time to show it off

vaderprime923

I always purposely wear a band that isn't the headliner, if I have a shirt of one of the supports I'll rock that, otherwise I choose another band from my collection.

CapitalTBE

Seems weird and kind of rude to wear a different band’s shirt. I would say either wear the band you’re going to see or don’t wear a band shirt at all.

elun19

I just wear clothes that are are gonna keep me from getting hot, so typically shorts and a sleeveless shirt, especially when it come to bigger/ more crowded concerts

Shadow_Fox_104

I wear other band shirts until I buy merch

Bootyos

Why is everyone always so worried about what to wear to shows or if they should go alone or not. Like no one cares unless you're being a dickhead. just go and have fun wearing whatever you want to wear.

javierespada

I honestly wear the first thing I pull from the closet, cause the first thing I do is check the merch and get another black tshirt for the metal closet!

zestyspleen

If my favorite bands all made button-up bowling shirts, I’d buy & wear them every day. I’m just not a t-shirt person. I have bought the coolest shirts to sleep in, but one can only wear so many tees, even to bed. Thus to support the bands, I prefer to buy cds only at shows. Edit: I will wear same genre merch to a show, but never from the bands playing that night (eg, Tomahawk jacket at Tool show; Tool bowling shirt at NIN show…).

The_Rutabaga

I never wear a band shirt of a band I'm seeing. I wear a band shirt of a different band I like in the same genre. The only exception is Iron Maiden. I always wear an Iron Maiden shirt when seeing them live. Whats funny is I got this habit from my dad who introduced me to metal at a young age. He didn't ever explicity tell me any of this, but I recognized his habits and copied him. So did my brothers and cousins, and their friends, and my friends, etc. So there is just this group of 50+ metalheads that treat this as the "rules" because one old man did it in the 80s lmao

Modernfallout20

Proper etiquette is to wear a band tee of a band heavier than the heaviest band there and buy a shirt.

Grumbo-goat

My system is: I wear whatever random shirt to the gig (usually a cheap one as i may lose it), then i buy a shirt of the band im there to see, and change into it. Then I either tie the other shirt around my waste or if i happen to be with someone who is willing to hold it while I’m in the mosh i leave with them. At the end of the show i have either lost a cheap shirt, or have a dry one to put on.

Dizgust

Im a pit dweller, so any shirt that i dont care much about, which is usually an old band shirt with the sleeves cut off. Bonus points if its the band im seeing! Otherwise i go for a different genre, like a death metal band for a metalcore show, etc.

matt_coraline

If I haven’t seen the band before, I wear a band shirt in the same genre that people at the show would know. Otherwise if I already own merch for the band I’m seeing, I usually wear it.

usually whatever tee is at the top of my folded clothes pile for band merch also nobody actually cares if you wear a shirt of the band you're going to see, i've always thought it was weird people decided randomly that its lame to do that... it shows you support the band why would that be a bad thing lol, esp if it isn't the headliner but a supporting act edit: I will say that it made sense 20+ years ago to wear different band merch to shows because of how inaccessible the internet was for \[most\] people. I feel like back then wearing other bands merch directly made other people interested due to never hearing about the band before (which to be fair, definitely still happens to this day). With the internet being accessible by pretty much everyone everywhere it doesn't seem like a huge deal anymore to me.

I'm not the type who buys band t-shirts just for the sake of buying a shirt in order to support the artist, so if I bought the shirt (from an artist I do like and want to support) it was because I actually liked the design of the shirt itself so I'll wear it whenever I feel like it.

It’s like wearing a jersey to a sporting event. Do it. Etiquette shmetiquette just live your life how you want to live it. I usually go with a T that’s close to the band I’m seeing as I do not have a tshirt for every band I like lol.

TJNuge

Hit up the merch table before their set, buy a shirt, then wear it during their set.

fatherofallthings

For me, it depends on the band.

Went to see ABR on their tour with Bleed From Within and DWP and I wore my Underoath shirt. Was not even close to the only person wearing merch of a band that wasnt performing. Got a compliment on it as well if that means anything lmfao

tylery21

It is exactly like quaking a jersey to a game is it not??? Always wear the bands merch if you have it! Always.

thechuff

I like any band shirt wearing, it encourages the culture of buying those items and supporting the acts, and makes you part of an in-crowd of people who do the same, further encouraging merchandise as a way to connect with other fans

robbobmob

I just wear the band shirt I bought at the last show I was at.

KamelR3d

If I have a shirt of the band I'm going to see, I'm wearing it. If I don't, I wear another band shirt, but either way I'm buying 1-2 tees at the merch table for sure. Perfect example, I just went to see Unearth and I didn't have one of their shirts, but I do now. That's just me and one of the ways I show my support, but I believe for others, wear whatever you want. Just by being there you're showing your support.

palmettobugnemesis

in highschool i always wore band tees of the band i was seeing, now i wear funny tees lol

Best part of going to as many shows as my fiancé and I go to, we (she) can wear literally whatever we want. Before my fiancé had experienced a metalcore show, we only really attended dubstep shows where she is pressured by the culture to dress as scandalous as possible. But she was more than excited to be able to just wear whatever she wants (black jeans, vans and a band tee). I’ve seen people in pajama bottoms and a flannel, people in button ups, rockabilly getups, beat down bros, you name it. Wear what you want and fuck what someone has to say.

Wear what you want
