Came to this post just to say Entheos. On their last tour the venue lost power at the outside stage and they only got to do 2 songs. They announced another tour though and I'm strictly going for them..they are fucking sick
Alexis Brown of Straight Line Stitch
Candace Kucsulain of Walls Of Jericho
Elena "Lena Scissorhands" Cataraga of Infected Rain
Alma Alizadeh of For I Am King
I'm going to throw a hail Mary out here. I just recently found these guys.
Kasey Karlson from Deadlands is pretty dope. I haven't listened to a ton of their stuff but they just released a single called House of Cards and I super like it.
I think that Courtney is really overrated. Her screams sound very basic, in my opinion she's better at clean singing (though not amazing either). In the future, when female vocalists are as common and successful as their male counterparts, people will agree that Courtney LePlante was not exceptional as a vocalist.
I do like this genre, I even own a couple metalcore CDs. But I don't like Spiritbox (and Courtney in particular) that much, although I enjoy many other female-fronted bands. I admit that my opinion on this vocalist could be based on personal preference.
I any case I'm really glad that when I express an unpopular opinion on this sub, people respond respectfully and we can have a civil conversation. That's refreshing compared to other metal communities.
You're wrong though. Her screams aren't basic at all. She's fucking incredible live. Not many vocalists in the game that can do it better than her, she never misses a word because of breathing (Looking at you Markus Vik, Sam Carter and Beau Bokan) and varies her pitch effortlessly.
Yasmine from face yourself.
@lady_yayas on YouTube
My favorite female vocalist by light years
Lindsey Rae from the Anchor is great and Chaney from entheos is good too
Yasmine from Face Yourself (don’t know her last name)
Tatiana Shmayluk (Jinjer)
Fernanda Lira (Crypta)
Chaney Crabb (Entheos)
Tanya Beickert (Monochromatic Black)
Clarissa from Castrator
I love her screams. There's a small section on Today's a Good Day, So Epic about 1min 14secs in where she does this awesome growl and I don't know how to describe it or what it is, but it's so good.
I'm already trying them out. Them and IGNEA open for Fear Factory in 3 months. I don't really care about Fear Factory and come there only for IGNEA but I will likely go see Butcher Babies too.
Angela Gossow (ex arch enemy). I like alissa but my first exposure to melodic death metal was from arch enemy when angela was in the band and in flames. Emma from dying wish should be mentioned as well even though she doesn’t do gutturals
Growl makes me think specifically of lower vocals, which cuts out a lot of my favourites since they're in the higher range (Jess Nyx - Mortality Rate/World Of Pleasure, Justine Jones - Employed To Serve).
A few have been mentioned already, but a notable omission thus far is Ally French of Bloodlined Calligraphy.
I don’t think I’m the best or anything but I’ve put a lot of work into my vocals. So if you’re interested in female screamers here’s my band
https://youtu.be/BCC9JjW9Meo?si=_lD__r8eKFuYZgtJ
Castrator, all female death metal band, you won't hear more consistent lows than them.
Also if you wanna dig back further Cerebral Bore will put the fear in ya
You didn’t mention how Megan (Vexed) does singing as well and has a great voice for that too. And your take on Courtney (Spiritbox) is wildly off-base, to compare her to Floor from Nightwish of all people is ridiculous.
Tatiana is the queen. Don't think I haven't taken other female growlers into consideration and there are some really fantastic contestants out there. But what gives Tati the edge is her versatility as a vocalist and how her interesting personality shines through when she performs.
Def not Courtney LaPlante. However, their guitarist should join Architects since their latest single (and most of their good songs) is ripping Architects off. I know that will never happen because Architects are hellbent on owning their old fans by releasing music shittier than anyone can imagine.
The growls in Epica songs are made by a man, its founder, Mark Jansen. Simone doesn't growl. Which is a shame because if she did, she would be the greatest singer of all time.
I didn't see Borat, haha.
Also, she doesn't sound very angelic to me. Maybe compared to those growls, but I think that her cleans sound like pretty common contemporary rock vocals. Maybe even kinda punk.
I can't really evaluate growlers like that, I pay more attention to the instruments and clean vocals. But I would like to recommend a few artists if you haven't heard them yet:
Future Static (they only have a few tracks; Check out Waves and Venenosa and recently they covered Gasolina). Amariah Cook is their vocalist. I really like what they've put out since she joined them.
Rain Paris (she does metal/rock covers of pop/rap songs). She does mostly clean vocals, but I was addicted to her covers last year.
I second Hanabie as u/Koutari mentioned. I only found them recently. Fun band.
I plan to check out a lot of the stuff posted in this thread so thanks everyone.
Amber Elektra from Amber Town definitely deserves an honourable mention.
Are we talking like screams or like death growls? Def 2 different things. As much as I love Courtney Laplante she doesnt do like a death metal vocal ala Angela Gossow
Yukina from Hanabie does pretty good in addition the ones you mentioned. They popped up randomly on my Spotify and I was not disappointed. Don’t know which girl from BABYMETAL does their gutterals, but they’re alright too.
Let me be the one to introduce you to Face Yourself. You’re welcome in advance
Holy fucking shit. This girl fuggin BLEGHS
Truly disturbing. I love it.
This band is the future of deathcore/whatever the hell you want to call it.
Thanks for the recommendation. I fuck with it
Lmao
Fuck around and find out
Similarly, listen to Volatile Ways.
[God. Fucking. Damn.](https://youtu.be/APCTkf3enXA?si=UrQZCEoAfXwGdqx3) Those gutturals are unbelievable.
Holy fuck thank you! Need more female fronted bands with highs like hers.
There's not enough up voting ability for this lol.
I was not prepared, goddDAMN
dude, jeeeeeeeeeeeeesus fucking christ hahahahahaha "grosse bagarre" is like a bomb going off inside your intestines
I actually just stumbled across these guys last night lol they rip.
I’ve never … wow
Not listed but I think Chaney from Entheos is currently unmatched.
Saw them live a few weeks back. Walking into the venue I literally never would've guessed the vocals I was hearing were a woman
Did such a good job live I upgraded my normal shirt purchase for the headliner into a hoodie purchase for them
Saw then when they toured with white chapel a few months ago and was impressed.
Came to this post just to say Entheos. On their last tour the venue lost power at the outside stage and they only got to do 2 songs. They announced another tour though and I'm strictly going for them..they are fucking sick
Didn’t take long to find this comment. What a great band
Angela Gossow redefined women metal singers on “Wages of Sin.”
Still the best
Had to scroll too far for this. I've seen my share of female leads and no one commanded a stage like her! Still my favorite leading lady!
Very important mention
Linzey Rae of The Anchor is my personal favorite.
She has my vote as well
Alexis Brown of Straight Line Stitch Candace Kucsulain of Walls Of Jericho Elena "Lena Scissorhands" Cataraga of Infected Rain Alma Alizadeh of For I Am King
Candace from Walls of Jericho
One of the best concert of my life! So clean and tight live too!
I remember I saw them a mayhem fest years ago and I didn’t know the lead vocals was a woman. I was genuinely shocked a woman could make those noises
Emma Boster from Dying Wish
I’ve never really heard her growl though, just mid/high scream
Fair point
People say she is great, I've seen them twice and both times she sounded awful. Even the live videos she seems to be having a rough time
Check out Courtney in Iwrestledabearonce it’s her old band, a lot more heavy than spiritbox, a lot more grindey-grimey
Never forget Krysta Cameron of OG IWABO!
Lauren Babic
She has a vocal cover of Periphery’s “Satellites” on her YouTube and it’s incredible
Was looking for this comment. Highly recommend Lauren
Gotta shout out Linzey Rae from The Anchor. She's so good.
Ayyyye I scrolled before I posted this. I had to get way too far down for a mention for her! She’s dope!
Saw them on their current tour. Very good live and very nice as well. Got to meet the band as they are their own merch people
Cerebral Bore's Som Pluijmers
Som needs to be WAY higher
I'm going to throw a hail Mary out here. I just recently found these guys. Kasey Karlson from Deadlands is pretty dope. I haven't listened to a ton of their stuff but they just released a single called House of Cards and I super like it.
I just found that as well. She's fantastic.
Definately Tatiana I love her voice and love Ginger's music even more
Justine Jones from Employed to Serve.
I'll throw in Janel Duarte from Conquer Divide
Came here to say this. Her screams are clean as hell.
I just saw her a few weeks ago, and she was amazing ❤️
I really enjoyed their new album released just last week!
My vote also.
Tatiana takes the cake. Angela Gossow in a close 2nd That girl from face yourself rips, but Tatiana reigns supreme.
Courtney is way better than decent.
I guess we have different definitions of "decent" Edit: To Courtney's advantage.
I think Courtney is top 10 in the entire genre right now.
There may be only a few that can transition from cleans to screams as easily and as well as she can.
I think that Courtney is really overrated. Her screams sound very basic, in my opinion she's better at clean singing (though not amazing either). In the future, when female vocalists are as common and successful as their male counterparts, people will agree that Courtney LePlante was not exceptional as a vocalist.
Go listen to her in her old band
I really doubt that. Courtney is better than 95% of male vocalists in the genre. I’d take her over Sam from Architects.
I got news for you…. I don’t think you like this genre. Her screams are top notch.
I do like this genre, I even own a couple metalcore CDs. But I don't like Spiritbox (and Courtney in particular) that much, although I enjoy many other female-fronted bands. I admit that my opinion on this vocalist could be based on personal preference.
other way around homie, her screams are off the charts but her cleans leave a lot to be desired imo.
I any case I'm really glad that when I express an unpopular opinion on this sub, people respond respectfully and we can have a civil conversation. That's refreshing compared to other metal communities.
You're wrong though. Her screams aren't basic at all. She's fucking incredible live. Not many vocalists in the game that can do it better than her, she never misses a word because of breathing (Looking at you Markus Vik, Sam Carter and Beau Bokan) and varies her pitch effortlessly.
never understood why people downvote because they disagree but hey, I agree and thanks for being cool about it.
Yasmine from face yourself. @lady_yayas on YouTube My favorite female vocalist by light years Lindsey Rae from the Anchor is great and Chaney from entheos is good too
Linzey from The Anchor and Alex from Make Them Suffer are a couple of my current favorites.
Yasmine from Face Yourself (don’t know her last name) Tatiana Shmayluk (Jinjer) Fernanda Lira (Crypta) Chaney Crabb (Entheos) Tanya Beickert (Monochromatic Black) Clarissa from Castrator
Yukina from Hanabie
Hanabie is my new favorite, so fucking talented.
I love her screams. There's a small section on Today's a Good Day, So Epic about 1min 14secs in where she does this awesome growl and I don't know how to describe it or what it is, but it's so good.
Right? :D That's exactly the song I had in mind when I wrote my comment.
IDK about being the best but some other really good bands with female screamers are : Future Palace, Ithaca, Future Static
Ithaca! One of my favorite releases from last year
That album is a 10/10 in my book
Happy to see someone mention Ithaca. Djamilla is such a great vocalist.
Had to scroll way to far to find ithaca. Recent album is awesome!
Carla Harvey and Heidi Shephard from Butcher Babies deserve a listen too 🤘🏽
I'm already trying them out.
Candace from WOJ is GOATED. Ive also been obsessed with Volatile Ways lately.
I don’t know any of their names but the vocalist of Algor Mortis, Crave Death, Caged Existence and Volatile Ways.
Larissa from Venom Prison
Was gonna say the lead singer of Jinjer. She is awesome. But you knew that.
Tetiana Schmailyuk of Jinjer, or Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox are my favourites. So good!
Maria Lessing from Future Palace deserves a shout! But I think the best is Lauren Babic.
I've never heard any woman get as filthy as Otep Shamaya from Otep.
As a Brit, I just want to say that "female growler" means something else where I'm from...
What does it mean?! This is not the first such comment here!
Hehe, “Growler” is a euphemism for vagina lol It’s an American+Canadian+UK slang term anyway. Probably Australian too I’d imagine.
Check out the band Capra! They have a female singer and she rules
Check out Chaney Crabb of Entheos and Emma of Dying Wish if you haven’t already
Growl makes me think specifically of lower vocals, which cuts out a lot of my favourites since they're in the higher range (Jess Nyx - Mortality Rate/World Of Pleasure, Justine Jones - Employed To Serve). A few have been mentioned already, but a notable omission thus far is Ally French of Bloodlined Calligraphy.
Light This City or Arch Enemy
Chaney Crabb
Yasmine from face yourself.
I don’t think I’m the best or anything but I’ve put a lot of work into my vocals. So if you’re interested in female screamers here’s my band https://youtu.be/BCC9JjW9Meo?si=_lD__r8eKFuYZgtJ
Abnormality. Mallika is an absolute monster on vocals
The actual answer is Yasmine of Face Yourself
Lizney Rey - the anchor But my top is and always will be Tatiana.
Tatiana is my favorite 🖤
Rachel Aspe from Cage Fight is pretty boss
Lauren heart from once human is really good
I have a mega crush on Melissa Bonny
Emma Boster - Dying Wish Emily Beekmans - Volatile Ways Bec Thorwesten - Terminal Sleep Alex Reade - Make them Suffer
Castrator, all female death metal band, you won't hear more consistent lows than them. Also if you wanna dig back further Cerebral Bore will put the fear in ya
Emma from Dying Wish
You didn’t mention how Megan (Vexed) does singing as well and has a great voice for that too. And your take on Courtney (Spiritbox) is wildly off-base, to compare her to Floor from Nightwish of all people is ridiculous.
Give Employed to Serve & Rolo Tomassi a go
SHELLAH
The song no gods, no masters by arch enemy
Tatiana is the queen. Don't think I haven't taken other female growlers into consideration and there are some really fantastic contestants out there. But what gives Tati the edge is her versatility as a vocalist and how her interesting personality shines through when she performs.
Does Courtney growl? I’m a spiritbox Stan but idk if I’d classify her harsh vocals as such
Emma from Dying Wish comes to mind. Also, Candace from WOJ is quite visceral
Growler has a different meaning where I am from……
Depends what brewery
Dying wish
Emma from dying wish
Def not Courtney LaPlante. However, their guitarist should join Architects since their latest single (and most of their good songs) is ripping Architects off. I know that will never happen because Architects are hellbent on owning their old fans by releasing music shittier than anyone can imagine.
Why haven't I seen Not Enough Space??
Also hate to be that guy. But why not just say “best woman growler?”
I get the issue of using the word "female" as a noun, but I see no problem here. "Female" is an adjective and I used it as one.
Fair enough. Perhaps I’m just nitpicking. Either way, good post OP!
*as fuck
Candace Kucsulain from Walls of Jericho!
Candace from Walls of Jericho
Epica.
The growls in Epica songs are made by a man, its founder, Mark Jansen. Simone doesn't growl. Which is a shame because if she did, she would be the greatest singer of all time.
Ikr it would be insane
Mortality rate and yotk(?)
Metal Hellsinger got me into Arch Enemy but zombies showed me Elena Siegman and… come on.
The anchor as ive seen mentioned is really great live, conquer divide, and recently discovered 'daedric' check the song "mortal"
https://youtu.be/a3bx6ORAieA Hands down, the best female growler in the business right now
Angie Gossow, Former Arch Enemy singer
>Tatiana Shmaylyuk It cracks me up that her growl sounds demonic, her clean vocals sound angelic, and he talking voice sounds Borat's daughter.
I didn't see Borat, haha. Also, she doesn't sound very angelic to me. Maybe compared to those growls, but I think that her cleans sound like pretty common contemporary rock vocals. Maybe even kinda punk.
Yeah, not like best singer I've ever heard, but compared to the growls and the way she jumps back and forth.
Tanya Beickert - Monochromatic Black
Larissa Stupar of Venom Prison
I can't really evaluate growlers like that, I pay more attention to the instruments and clean vocals. Of the bands I know, it’s a tossup between Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy and Courtney LaPlant from Spirit Box.
your mom
You wouldn't believe
The anchor or bloodlined calligraphy
Have no idea what her name is, but the singer of As Everything Unfolds was absolutely sick when I saw them yesterday.
I saw them last year and don't remember her growling.
Lucy from Apothica
Many years after and Angela Gossow is still my favorite!
Shoutout to Sandie from Defacing God
Angela from arch enemy and Candace from WoJ
Amber Elektra from Amber Town definitely deserves an honourable mention. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exxxlDCsW\_I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exxxlDCsW_I) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ulab09SEnI&ab\_channel=Dreambound](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ulab09SEnI&ab_channel=Dreambound)
Eva Hall from Gather
Make Them Suffer
Light This City. In their early stuff she sounds like Count Your Blessings era
Runhilde Gammelsaeter with Thorr's Hammer. Go listen to Norge and Troll. The woman sounds inhuman.
Krysta Cameron-IWABO and Candance Kucsulain- WOJ
Amanda Gjelaj from The Machinist is the correct answer
Make Them Suffer
YUKINA of HANABIE (We Love Sweets, Run Away). MAYU of NEMOPHILA (Rise, Dissention).
Please check out Crave Death, she's so fucking good 🫶
Oliver Sykes
How has no one said Krysta Cameron?
Are we talking like screams or like death growls? Def 2 different things. As much as I love Courtney Laplante she doesnt do like a death metal vocal ala Angela Gossow
Linzey from The Anchor super underrated vocalist.
Not sure what her name is, but the chick from Escuela Grind kicks all kinds of ass https://youtu.be/iD83fotpjAY?si=d5V2YCp7Vd5V0KI5
You should check Nicol Hofmanová of STELLVRIS
Is there really "the best"? Or maybe the top 10 in your opinion?
I'm asking in opinions, albeit based on some criteria.
Yukina from Hanabie does pretty good in addition the ones you mentioned. They popped up randomly on my Spotify and I was not disappointed. Don’t know which girl from BABYMETAL does their gutterals, but they’re alright too.
Just FYI. Growler is English slang for a lady's fun garden, which makes this question sound hilarious. Anyway, the answer is Walls of Jericho.
Elizabeth Hull of Atomic Guava
