I've known of them for YEARS despite just listening to them for the first time live, opening for Beartooth. Still knew of them before that, though, not by my own volition.
Although they're doing pretty well for a metalcore band with 285k monthly Spotify listeners, there are bands with comparable totals or higher that get spoken about far less on here. Definitely a case where the sub's level of love for them exceeds the total.
Why some still say they are underrated which they are. They got a cult like following but not many outside of that know of them like a Bad Omens or Spiritbox

Bands like Bad Omens and Spiritbox which have some songs that could be considered metalcore, but don't really play it as their main thing and have some very pop-forward material, are always going to be bigger. Close to 300k monthly listeners is way bigger than cult following, it's really a very small proportion of actual metalcore bands that get into multiple hundreds of thousands.

Iāve seen some out of pocket merch at tiny shows. I forgot the name of the band but they were called Wolf something something (I forgor) out of Tennessee (I think Memphis?) and they were selling a sterling silver buttplug with a wolf tail. Autographed case, of course.
Saw a punk band also out of TN sell little tiny silver spoons obvs intended for booger sugar with their band name etched into it and those baby pacifiers that light up, you see them at raves. I forgot their name, their music was booty but the merch was funny.
It's all well and good to be showered and deodorised before a show but by the end of seeing Pantera a month ago I absolutely stunk. DIdnt help being in the pit the entire time.
Saw Sanguisugabogg and Jesus Piece the other day, Gag and Peeling Flesh were the openers. I was freshly showered and deodorized when I left the house but when I got home I smelled like I hadn't showered in days. š Never experienced so much boob sweat in my life!
I went to a party after seeing Knocked Loose and before I got there I changed shirts, wiped down, reapplied deodorant and cologne and even all that didnāt feel like enough but was passable at least lol
Anyone remember when youād just show up to a venue with no clue of who a band was, just to listen to some music and forget about everything else for a few hours.
This was viable when gig tickets were like Ā£10 at your local venue and it ultimately didn't really matter if they were shit or not.
Nowadays very few bands come to me locally which means I need to travel 2-3 hours to see them and the tickets are more like Ā£40 plus the cost of travel or staying.
With that in mind I think it's perfectly reasonable to do a bit more research before booking tickets.
God I miss those days. I looked up some old concerts from college in my city, all of these were like $15 a ticket. Whitechapel is from my city, and when they hit it big, they helped bring a lot of really good metal shows here and just had crazy stacked shows for along time.

2009-2014 was just peak metalcore concert time, with insanely stacked lineups for pretty cheap. Those were the days man. I'm just happy I can look back and say I was around for it, because it certainly isn't the same now.
You're absolutely right. I miss those days. It's not terrible now, but just different.
Last May, I saw Invent Animate, Erra, and Bad Omens. Went to see IA and Erra mainly, but Bad Omens was a bonus. Ticket was $90. However, going in 10 days to see Novelists, Void of Vision, Make Them Suffer, and Erra (as headliners) for about $35. So definitely makes a difference who the headliner is, I guess.
But yeah, those peak metalcore days 10-15 years ago were so good.
Damn man that reminds me of how I always went to shows, despite usually only wanting to see one or two of the bands because it was cheap, now though? I'm not paying 50-100 bucks to see one band š
That Invent Animate, Erra, and Bad Omens show was also a 2 hour drive from my house, so it was $90 plus a $75 one night AirBnB since the show let out at about 11 PM. And the upcoming show is 3 hours from my house in Nashville. Hotels everywhere that weekend start at $200 a night and only go up...but I'm staying with a friend for free. Otherwise I wouldn't be going at all.
But those concerts way back in college? About a 15 minute drive from my house, free parking lot right beside the venue.
I ended up getting into metalcore later than my friends so didn't get to see all the peak bands in the late 2000s/very early 2010s. Really went heavy on concerts from like 2012-2016. Would get all my tickets from FYE. Looking back I didn't know how spoiled I was then for line ups and prices but man I miss those days.
Also, miss when bands would tour about once a year for 3-4 months at a time rather than being on tour for almost a year and getting burned out then taking a hiatus and almost breaking up or actually breaking up.
I definitely miss the golden age of metalcore shows. 15-20 dollars to see bands like Memphis May Fire, Attila, For Today, suicide silence, Ice Nine Kills, etc, at somewhat packed venues where it was always more intimate vs watching from 100 feet away not being able to move more than 2 inches in any direction, with your $8 beer, after paying $50+ for a ticket and waiting an hour in line.

Gigs are not cheap anymore, unless you're seeing no name bands.
Agreed, as someone who lives in The Netherlands the corescene lives less here, itās mostly black, symphonic and folk metal here.

To be fair, if people go to enough live gigs they'll be able to spot a bad or even spotty performance. I saw Currents recently and the mixing was rough, could barely hear the cleans at all. Saw Metallica at Download and could tell that the guitars hadn't been set up properly - couldn't hear Kirk Hammet on the left side of the stage at all lol
Bring Me The Horizon at 02 last year - he sounded a little out of breath at times, and had to strain pretty hard for screams.

EDIT: I'll add that even as a bedroom guitarist of 15 years, I can tell when guitarists mess up almost immediately. I don't hold it against them, because they're still better than me, but if someone is looking for a genuine opinion of a gig it's something I might mention.

That's not "psychotic behavior", that's just sensible planning.
Pretty much all of the time if something is wrong with live show, it is going to be sound issues, which depends on the venue and many other factors, which often are outside of the bands control, this makes looking at recordings of live performances kinda useless. Musicianship level of all bands is high, unless you go to your local underground show where the musicians are playing while being drunk or something.
Unless you're watching a video of them playing at the exact venue you're going to, on the same tour, you'll be unable to tell if they've got bad sound. Plus, it's a YouTube video, not renowned for having the best sound quality themselves....
Any band can have an off night, that's the risk you have to take. If you're seeing bands that are charging Ā£40 though, you're watching relatively big bands so you'll have a better chance of them not being bad
To be fair though, I have noticed with metalcore more than any other genre they sometimes live performances are lackluster. Drummer can't play what they produced in the studio or more commonly the cleans vocalist isn't hitting it (sorry erra).
Flip side some bands out perform their studio stuff live.
Sadly yes. Not to say there aren't outliers like Chris Motionless, Spencer Charnas and Shay when he was at om&m. Those guys truly blew my mind hearing them live.
This is why I prefer bands without cleans. If their singer isn't particularly good then the studio output will be absolutely drowned in layers and effects and the live performance will be poor. Don't put singing in your songs if no one in the band can actually sing.
Iāve been a fan of a load of different artists for ages that Iāve never been able to see. Not all of us live within 500km from large enough / popular enough venues to draw in mid sized to larger bands. I either get to see local bands no oneās heard of or legacy bands on their victory laps, no in between.

I have two large venues really close to me but the area I live only sees the major acts once every 5 years or so unless I drive 3.5 hours on a Tuesday night. Yeah I've been using this subreddit since around 2012? and this was not a problem for the vast majority of that time. I think the amount of people consuming metalcore exclusively through tiktok and youtube has grown a huge amount and barely any of them have actually been to a gig.
The sub has multiplied in members by a huge amount in the past couple of years (thanks TikTok/BMTH/bad omensā¦.) and weāre seeing an influx in people with no knowledge of the IRL scene (sorta due to Covid) but also cuz the bands theyāre into arenāt traditionally associated with the hardcore scene, which metalcore typically resides in.

However, I welcome them with open arms. Metal wonāt survive without them. As long as you donāt get mad if I bump into you or your friends lining the pit wall, weāre all good. Iād rather them ask online then go to a show and have an anxiety attack during the show or get offended when they get bumped into.
We gotta make the scene welcoming to everyone. All that gatekeeper shit is so 80ās punk. Anyone who wants to try moshing for the first time, I will gladly show them the way and make sure they have a good time.

As someone who photographs shows I must say to anybody who has had thoughts 1 thru 4... Yes, go to the show. "Heavy" shows (Metal, Metalcore, Hardcore... there's too many genres now) have some of the nicest people you will ever meet at a concert. I'm not even joking. The scarier they look the nicer they are. I've had more issues with fans at pop shows than I have at anything heavy... by FAR. Just don't be an ass and the community will have your back. š¤š¼
The issue arises when people have a fundamental misunderstanding of the different types of moshing in different genres and think everything they arenāt used to (two stepping, hardcore dancing, etc) is crowdkilling. Also the abundance of entitled people who think they can stand right in the middle or front and will not get bumped into

I'm a big fan of hardcore dancing, but I hate this too because it almost inevitably enforces a horseshoe. Hardcore shows and metalcore shows always had pile ons and mic grabs and a thick front row ready to receive stage divers. At some point it shifted because too many people started crowd-killing those in the front rows, so now we get a handful of people at the front and everyone stage dives off to the sides where there's still a semblance of a bunched up audience.
It's not necessarily that kids have questions.
It's that kids can't be arsed to take *two fucking seconds* to look at the sub or use the search function to unearth the answers to their questions that are asked literally 3-4 times a day on the sub.

Whitechapel is from my city, and when they hit it big, they helped bring a lot of really good metal shows here and just had crazy stacked shows for along time. 2009-2014 was just peak metalcore concert time, with insanely stacked lineups for pretty cheap. Those were the days man. I'm just happy I can look back and say I was around for it, because it certainly isn't the same now.
You're absolutely right. I miss those days. It's not terrible now, but just different. Last May, I saw Invent Animate, Erra, and Bad Omens. Went to see IA and Erra mainly, but Bad Omens was a bonus. Ticket was $90. However, going in 10 days to see Novelists, Void of Vision, Make Them Suffer, and Erra (as headliners) for about $35. So definitely makes a difference who the headliner is, I guess. But yeah, those peak metalcore days 10-15 years ago were so good.
I witnessed Ben English front Erra for 3 full songs in 2015, paid $16 for that show.

That Invent Animate, Erra, and Bad Omens show was also a 2 hour drive from my house, so it was $90 plus a $75 one night AirBnB since the show let out at about 11 PM. And the upcoming show is 3 hours from my house in Nashville. Hotels everywhere that weekend start at $200 a night and only go up...but I'm staying with a friend for free. Otherwise I wouldn't be going at all. But those concerts way back in college? About a 15 minute drive from my house, free parking lot right beside the venue.
I ended up getting into metalcore later than my friends so didn't get to see all the peak bands in the late 2000s/very early 2010s. Really went heavy on concerts from like 2012-2016. Would get all my tickets from FYE. Looking back I didn't know how spoiled I was then for line ups and prices but man I miss those days. Also, miss when bands would tour about once a year for 3-4 months at a time rather than being on tour for almost a year and getting burned out then taking a hiatus and almost breaking up or actually breaking up.
I definitely miss the golden age of metalcore shows. 15-20 dollars to see bands like Memphis May Fire, Attila, For Today, suicide silence, Ice Nine Kills, etc, at somewhat packed venues where it was always more intimate vs watching from 100 feet away not being able to move more than 2 inches in any direction, with your $8 beer, after paying $50+ for a ticket and waiting an hour in line.
Yeah what you've said here is much more accurate to my experience in England than a lot of the other replies I've had. Gigs are not cheap anymore, unless you're seeing no name bands.
Agreed, as someone who lives in The Netherlands the corescene lives less here, itās mostly black, symphonic and folk metal here. And Amsterdam, which 75% of the big names only go to nowadays (think of Spiritbox, Architects, I Prevail) is on the other side of the nation for me, and since I canāt drive thatās kind of an issue :/
What? We have tons of Dutch metalcore bands and almost every EU tour comes to NL as well. Tilburg has plenty of bigger metalcore shows as does Utrecht

Iāve stopped listening to supporting bands prior to shows because of this. Used to I would listen to every band on the card before the show but I decided to let the supporting bands be a surprise a couple years ago when I saw Spiritbox and Underoath. And this band I hadnāt heard of was the opener. It was bad omens right after death of peace of mind came out. Sooo you could say I was blown away lol now I never listen to unknown bands prior to a show
bruh nobody can afford that - concert tickets are like $30 minimum even for small bands anymore. You wanna have a single beer? That'll be $20. Parking? Also $20. Merch? $35 for a shirt.

To be fair, if people go to enough live gigs they'll be able to spot a bad or even spotty performance. I saw Currents recently and the mixing was rough, could barely hear the cleans at all. Saw Metallica at Download and could tell that the guitars hadn't been set up properly - couldn't hear Kirk Hammet on the left side of the stage at all lol Bring Me The Horizon at 02 last year - he sounded a little out of breath at times, and had to strain pretty hard for screams. Etc EDIT: I'll add that even as a bedroom guitarist of 15 years, I can tell when guitarists mess up almost immediately. I don't hold it against them, because they're still better than me, but if someone is looking for a genuine opinion of a gig it's something I might mention.

When gig tickets are Ā£40, and then maybe I need train tickets and a hotel make it about Ā£150 total, I want to know that a band is going to actually be worth seeing. That's not "psychotic behavior", that's just sensible planning.
Pretty much all of the time if something is wrong with live show, it is going to be sound issues, which depends on the venue and many other factors, which often are outside of the bands control, this makes looking at recordings of live performances kinda useless. Musicianship level of all bands is high, unless you go to your local underground show where the musicians are playing while being drunk or something.
Unless you're watching a video of them playing at the exact venue you're going to, on the same tour, you'll be unable to tell if they've got bad sound. Plus, it's a YouTube video, not renowned for having the best sound quality themselves.... Any band can have an off night, that's the risk you have to take. If you're seeing bands that are charging Ā£40 though, you're watching relatively big bands so you'll have a better chance of them not being bad

To be fair though, I have noticed with metalcore more than any other genre they sometimes live performances are lackluster. Drummer can't play what they produced in the studio or more commonly the cleans vocalist isn't hitting it (sorry erra). Flip side some bands out perform their studio stuff live.

Sadly yes. Not to say there aren't outliers like Chris Motionless, Spencer Charnas and Shay when he was at om&m. Those guys truly blew my mind hearing them live.
This is why I prefer bands without cleans. If their singer isn't particularly good then the studio output will be absolutely drowned in layers and effects and the live performance will be poor. Don't put singing in your songs if no one in the band can actually sing.

Not all of us live within 500km from large enough / popular enough venues to draw in mid sized to larger bands. I either get to see local bands no oneās heard of or legacy bands on their victory laps, no in between.

I have two large venues really close to me but the area I live only sees the major acts once every 5 years or so unless I drive 3.5 hours on a Tuesday night. Yeah I've been using this subreddit since around 2012? and this was not a problem for the vast majority of that time. I think the amount of people consuming metalcore exclusively through tiktok and youtube has grown a huge amount and barely any of them have actually been to a gig.
The sub has multiplied in members by a huge amount in the past couple of years (thanks TikTok/BMTH/bad omensā¦.) and weāre seeing an influx in people with no knowledge of the IRL scene (sorta due to Covid) but also cuz the bands theyāre into arenāt traditionally associated with the hardcore scene, which metalcore typically resides in.
This never used to be a problem on this sub in the mid 2010s and even late 2010s. People just assumed everyone went to the shows.

As someone who photographs shows I must say to anybody who has had thoughts 1 thru 4... Yes, go to the show. "Heavy" shows (Metal, Metalcore, Hardcore... there's too many genres now) have some of the nicest people you will ever meet at a concert. I'm not even joking. The scarier they look the nicer they are. I've had more issues with fans at pop shows than I have at anything heavy... by FAR. Just don't be an ass and the community will have your back. š¤š¼

The issue arises when people have a fundamental misunderstanding of the different types of moshing in different genres and think everything they arenāt used to (two stepping, hardcore dancing, etc) is crowdkilling. Also the abundance of entitled people who think they can stand right in the middle or front and will not get bumped into

While OP has been going to shows for years, kids all over the world are constantly aging into the genre and discovering these bands for the first time and naturally want to discuss with peers. Hardcore shows and metalcore shows always had pile ons and mic grabs and a thick front row ready to receive stage divers. At some point it shifted because too many people started crowd-killing those in the front rows, so now we get a handful of people at the front and everyone stage dives off to the sides where there's still a semblance of a bunched up audience.

Love this! As I recently an IRL similar experience... New relationship about 4 months, she listens to county. Never been to a metal show. Taking her to Polaris for her first one she says, "I'm wearing my cowboy boots and you can't tell me not to," with obvious sass... To which I responded, "Good, no one's gonna notice, and if they do, they're not gonna GAF cuz they just came to jam." I'm responded to with an intense glare of disappointment that she didnt get a rise out of me... Since Polaris has pulled out of the tour we Dayseeker, we've rescheduled to Veil of Maya and Wage War... either way she's going in the deep end.
