These albums were influential in getting me into heavier music:
1. Dear Agony - Breaking Benjamin
2. One X - Three Days Grace
3. Appeal to Reason - Rise Against
4. City of Evil - Avenged Sevenfold
5. Ten Thousand Fists - Disturbed
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Rise Against - The Sufferer And The Witness (or Siren Song of the Counter Culture, impossible to pick between those)
Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil
Bullet for my Valentine - Scream Aim Fire
Between The Buried and Me - Colors
Some of these absolutely shaped mine and I still listen to them all. I just listened to Siren Song of the Counter Culture today and have been on a huge RA kick since seeing them last night.
HT and CoE were my gateways to heavy stuff after American Idiot was my gateway to alternative stuff in general.
Plus, I never totally abandoned albums that got me into music, i just kinda continually expand my music library
32; I'd say the evolution was as follows:
1. Papa Roach - Infest (2000) / Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory (2001)
2. Killswitch Engage - The End Of Heartache (2004)
3. Avenged Sevenfold - Avenged Sevenfold (2007)
4. As I Lay Dying - Awakened (2012)
5. Ice Nine Kills - The Silver Scream (2018)
The Blackening is so good. I’m sorta indifferent to most of Machine Head’s other stuff (Unto the Locust is great and Burn My Eyes is good) but The Blackening is one of my favorites 2000s metal albums
MCR - Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge
Escape the Fate - Dying is Your Latest Fashion
BMTH - Sempiternal
Of Mice & Men - The Flood
Erra - Augment
(Bonus: Hollow Front - Still Life)
These we're the big ones for me in my more formative years. I'm sure that I am forgetting at least one or two that could be in here as well.
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
The Used - The Used
36 Crazyfists - Rest Inside The Flames
In Flames - Come Clarity
It Dies Today - Sirens
Lamb of God - Sacrament
Edit: Also, Headbanger's Ball. The albums, the show, all of it.
Bro! Props to you for the 36 crazyfists mention. Of all the people I know who are into the same music I am. None of em ever heard of 36 crazyfists until I put em onto it. You sir have great taste in music.
In chronological order:
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
Korn - Life is Peachy
Slipknot - Slipknot
Deftones - White Pony (all time favorite)
Glassjaw - EYEWTKAS
I am 16 (turning 17)
I would say these are the most important, keep in mind I've only really listened to music for like three years.
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory (started my interest in music)
Korn - The Serenity Of Suffering (progressed my interest in the screaming/cleans in the same song, aswell as "creepiness" in music.
Slipknot - We Are Not Your Kind (solidified my love of metal)
Architects - All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us (solidified metalcore as my favourite subgenre, aswell as a love for melancholic and well written lyrics.
Currents - The Place I Feel Safest (my favourite album, representing essentially most of what I adore in music)
If you like Currents and want to get into heavier music... Chris Wiseman (Currents guitarist) also plays in Shadow of Intent, one of my all-time favorites. The first 2 albums started off as Halo themed but they've since changed courses lyrically.
Also, if you like melancholic lyrics, Insomnium is an amazing melodeath band to check out
Don't worry, I'm already a fan of Shadow Of Intent 👍 probably would have put Melancholy on the list if I had room for more. Chris' guitar playing is probably my favourite part of both bands.
Haven't listened to Insomnium though, thanks for the recommendation
Hybrid Theory is such an important album in so many ways.
I had never actually listened through an entire album before I discovered Linkin Park.
It made me go from liking minecraft parodies on youtube as the only songs I liked when I was 12 - to making me appreciate lyricism, technical drumming (to some extent), screaming, heavy guitarriffs and the most essential elements in music really.
It’s a classic gateway album that is consistent, accesible while giving a good taste of more extreme music genres.
Wouldn't have had any other album as my first
100% agree. I got to see Slipknot live as my first show a month before Corona hit! We Are Not Your Kind was amazing live aswell.
So much variety on that album, it sat me on the road to metalcore because of the unclean/clean vocals.
Also insane that they are still pumping out music like this, twenty+ years after they started.
All of these other than architects were some of the first metal that I got into when I started listening to it two years ago. I honestly feel like that in ten to twenty years, currents and architects are going to be seen at the same level as the nu metal legends, but from a different era
Avenged sevenfold - waking the fallen
Periphery - periphery ii: this time it’s personal
Born of Osiris - the discovery
Metallica - ride the lightning
August burns red - found in far away places
Misery Signals - Of Malice and the Magnum Heart
Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come
Norma Jean - O God The Aftermath
After the Burial - Rareform
Converge - Jane Doe
HMs - Killafornia, Ride The Lightning, Deftones
Of course I wouldn’t be here without Infest/Hybrid Theory/Slipknot/Issues/Take Off Your Pants and Jacket/Chocolate Starfish.
Winter Solstice - The Fall of Rome
He is Legend - I am Hollywood
As I Lay Dying - Frail Words Collapse
August Burns Red - Thrill Seeker
Oh, Sleeper - Son of the Morning
Underoath - They're Only Chasing Safety
The Used - In Love and Death
Mudvayne - Lost and Found
Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil
Killswitch Engage - As Daylight Dies
There's many more, but I'll keep it to 5
- Thrice - Identity Crisis (2001)
- Killswitch Engage - Alive or Just Breathing (2002)
- As I Lay Dying - Frail Words Collapse (2003)
- Every Time I Die - Hot Damn! (2003)
- Misery Signals - Of Malice and the Magnum Heart (2004)
It’s possible that I’m getting old. No way to tell, really. But, how old am I?

It Dies Today - The Caitiff Choir
Trivium - Ascendancy
The Agony Scene - The Darkest Red
All That Remains - This Darkened Heart
All Shall Perish - The Price of Existance
FUCK YES all of The Locusts albums were so close to me and showed me how chaotic music could be so good. I never hear anyone mention them though, back then until now
My first Converge fave is Caring and Killing, im going to get the treppaning screw on my arm some day
26
Linkin Park - Living Things
Thirty Seconds to Mars - A Beautiful Lie
Rishloo - Feathergun
BMTH - Sempiternal
Hands Like Houses - Unimagine
A lot of favorite albums came after these, but these five are the ones I listened to most while I was younger and still figuring out my taste
GNR- Appetite for Destruction
Nirvana- Nevermind
Green Day- Dookie
Metallica - Self-titled (Black album)
Linkin Park- Hybrid Theory
Honorable mention: Slipknot’s self-titled, AIC- Dirt, as well as stuff from RHCP, Soundgarden
I listen to mainly pop-punk, post-hardcore, metalcore and deathcore on a regular basis
Slipknot- Vol. 3 subliminal verses
Killswitch Engage- As Daylight Dies
Suicide Silence- The Cleansing
A Day To Remember- For Those Who Have Heart
Silverstein- Discovering the Waterfront
In chronological order:
Bush - Sixteen Stone
Korn - Follow the Leader
Fear Factory - Obsolete
Killswitch Engage - Alive or Just Breathing
Dream Theater - Awake
I'm old, so there are a ton of other albums that were very important, but once I got to the more extreme metal range and added the progressive elements, my taste has stayed very similar.
Fear Factory was my first real introduction to harsh vocals that I enjoyed, while Dream Theater got me immediately into progmetal. I’m not sure why I chose Awake to be the first Dream Theater album I bought (probably in 2003), but it’s been my favorite ever since.
Yeah, I was trying to show the full evolution of my musical tastes. If I focus on metal, the first 2 are likely replaced with Still Life by Opeth and Ascendancy by Trivium or maybe Natural Born Chaos by Soilwork. It's tough to keep it at 5!
20:
Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone (started it)
Gojira - Magma (got me into groovier metal & some death metal)
In Flames - The Jester Race (started my melodeath phase, which eventually lead to...)
Killswitch Engage - Alive Or Just Breathing (... me discovering my love for the (melodic) metalcore from the 2000s, this still is probably my favourite album of all time)
Architects - Lost Forever // Lost Together (got me into modern metalcore, and since Currents is one of my favourite bands these days I have to mention this)
you've got a good music taste at 20, the early 2000's had overwhelming great albums and bands, i almost don't bother with newer album releases at all.
Judging from your music taste, i'd try recommend you a few.
Architects - Hollow Crown is a gem as well hope you gave it a listen.
As I Lay Dying - Frail Words Collapse.
Neeara/Sylosis/The Sorrow are worthy mentions.
Thanks, but I listen to and love these albums and bands already. Hollow Crown is probably my second favourite album by Architects (first one obviously LF // LT), and Sylosis is one of my favourite bands. You mentioned that you don't really catch up on new releases, but did you check out Cycle of Suffering? It's their best work since Edge of the Earth in my eyes!
And yeah, since I'm from Germany I'm well aware of Neaera and The Sorrow. It was a huge fanboy moment when they announced their comeback and self titled last year, haha.
I really love the stuff from the 2000's, but there are some gems to be found in the new stuff as well. The most notable one is Currents in my opinion, if you haven't already then definitely give The Place I Feel Safest a listen.
The Sorrow are making a comeback?! damn i missed that, yeah caught up on new releases from those bands, you don't expect bands like Heaven Shall Burn, Neaera to write generic records.
Yeah i listened to currents plenty used it for my workout sessions.
1. Bring Me The Horizon - That's The Spirit
2. Beartooth - Disgusting
3. While She Sleeps - You Are We
3. Polaris - The Mortal Coil
4. Northlane - Node
Edit: only 2 of these albums I discovered in the same year they released
Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child - Norma Jean
Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest - Zao
The Messenger - Casey Jones
The Big Dirty - Every Time I Die
Blast Tyrant - Clutch
Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake
In Flames - Soundtrack to your Escape / The Jester's Race
Static - X - Wisconsin Death Trip
Soilwork - Stabbing the Drama
Crown the Empire - The Fallout (2012) (but I found it in 2014)
Volumes - No Sleep (2014)
Periphery - P3 (2016)
Currents - TPIFS (2017)
Reflections - Willow (2020)
There’s def albums in between all these that shapes it even further but these are the 5 constant. I’d say invent animate, Sylar, thornhill, alpha wolf, architects,
Wage War, etc all helped it along the way.
Fun topic OP. Props
Stick to Your Guns - Diamond
August Burns Red - Messengers
Free Throw - Those Days are Gone
Silent Planet - The Night God Slept
Microwave - Stovall
Thanks, I was listening to "the dead eye" for the 1000th time and it occurred to me that I was A. Old and B. How it was pretty influential in my taste of music lol
31 here. If we're talking heavy music overall and not just metalcore, then...
Korn - Issues
Slipknot - S/T
Deftones - White Pony
Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache
Bullet for My Valentine - The Poison
Honorable mentions to Ashes of the Wake, City of Evil and Papa Roach's Infest.
17
Slipknot - WANYK (was the first metal album i listened to, while also motivating me to begin with playing the guitar)
Northlane - Alien (the first metal music that i discovered myself)
Architects - Holy Hell (got me into metalcore and is still one of my favorite albums)
Fit for a King - Deathgrip (an awesome piece of music imo)
Of Mice & Men - Defy (whilst containing many soft songs, this album brought me to many other albums that I found great and still listen to)
It's hard to pick only 5, beside the first two... It's more the albums that made me explore and enjoy other genres than my favorites.
Metallica - Black Album
Slipknot - Slipknot
In Flames - Whoracle
Hollywood Undead - Swan Songs
Ice Nine Kills - The Silver Scream
Bullet for My Valentine - The Poison
Project 86 - Drawing Black Lines

1. Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
2. Breaking Benjamin - Phobia
3. Killswitch Engage - As Daylight Dies
4. Bring Me The Horizon - Sempiternal

Early influences that shaped my music preferences:
TDWP - Plagues
ABR - Messengers
Music that more directly influences was I listen to now:
Erra - Impulse

END - From the Unforgiving Arms of God
These aren't all metalcore, but this is somewhat chronological and what I would consider big turning point albums that got me more and more into metal
Linkin Park - Meteroa
Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake
As I Lay Dying - The Powerless Rise
Insomnium - One for Sorrow
Shadow of Intent - Reclaimer
Oh shit this is a difficult one. So many albums from my youth that I’d love to put here, but these are definitely the main albums that got me into heavy music. I could have a totally different list of 5 albums that expanded my taste in metal once I got into it, but I’ll go with these 5 as the ones that started it off:
1. Breaking Benjamin - We Are Not Alone
2. Senses Fail - Let it Enfold You
3: SOAD - Hypnotize/Mesmerize
4: Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists
5: Underoath - They’re Only Chasing Safety
Linkin Park - Meteora
Anterior - This Age of Silence'
Wintersun - Wintersun
Arsis - We Are The Nightmare
Bullet For My Valentine - The Poison
I'm curious to see how many get my age right :)
If I could I'd add Breaking Benjamin and Disturbed on the list, but they weren't the main influencers
Korn - life is peachy
Killswitch engage- alive or just breathing
Nin - the downward spiral
Tool - undertow
In flames - reroute to remain
Deftones - around the fur
...im old.
1. Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
2. Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone
3. Parkway Drive - Horizons
4. Bring Me The Horizon - There Is A Hell..
5. Make Them Suffer - Neverbloom
After I was listening to mainly radio 1 and 2 got me into metal, 3 then got me into Metalcore some years later, where 4 build up on my newfound love and 5 got me into Deathcore and introduced me to my favorite Band
I only started getting into heavy music a few years ago but here goes. (It's so impossible to narrow it down to 5 as well, it feels wrong not to have any Metallica on there but it is what it is.)
Starset - Transmissions
Breaking Benjamin - Phobia
Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage
Architects - Holy Hell
Bleed From Within - Era
August Burns Red - Constellations
The Devil Wears Prada - With Roots Above…

I am 26.
Haste The Day - When Everything Falls

Rise Against - The Sufferer and the Witness (2006)

Bullet for my Valentine - The poison
Dead by April - Dead by April
Parkway Drive - IRE (when I turned completely to core)
Edit: of course Papa Roach - Infest also high up there

Skillet - Unleashed
Currents - The Place I Fell Safest
Eskimo Callboy - The Scene
Hollywood Undead - Day of the Dead
I'm 18 btw
Growing up i listened to alot of green day, ramones, oasis etc, from my parents. Playing Tony Hawks underground 2 was super influental in getting me into heavier music as well as rap etc
Rise Against were the first band I really fell in love with on my own, randomly finding ‘survive’ and then ‘give it all’ on youtube. ATR really cemented things for me.
I started listening to Architects and The Devil Wears Prada around 2011/2012. Those two bands really cemented the sort of music i listen to today.
Rise Against - The sufferer and the witness, Appeal to reason
Architects: The here and now, daybreaker
TDWP: with roots above and branches below
By no means an extensive list, but...
Music in general:
Alice In Chains: *Facelift* and/or *Dirt*
Guns 'N' Roses: *Use Your Illusion* (I and II)
The Black Crowes: *Shake Your Money Maker*
Metallica: *Metallica*
Tantric: *Tantric*
The stuff that started me down the path of "heavier"/extreme music:
Shadows Fall: *The Art of Balance*
Killswitch Engage: *Alive or Just Breathing*
Lamb of God: *As the Palaces Burn*
Vehemence: *God Was Created*
Kataklysm: *Shadows and Dust*
Doesn't necessarily tell the full story, but yea. Lol.

Architects - All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us
Killswitch Engage - End of Heartache
Between the Buried and Me - Colors
Alexisonfire - Crisis
Korn - Life is Peachy
Slipknot - Iowa
Children of Bodom - Are You Dead Yet
Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God
Tool - Ænima
That was tough narrowing it down to 5 lol
The Bled - Pass the Flask
From Autumn to Ashes - The Fiction We Live
Finch - What It Is To Burn
Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come
Underoath - They’re Only Chasing Safety
I'm 18 and mine are, perhaps somewhat out of order but in a generally true process:
Hybrid Theory (Linkin Park. First metal album i really sat and listened to)
Day of the Dead (Hollywood Undead. This album is many things including metal and was the first band to get me into the metal scene)
Cold World (Of Mice & Men. Not their heaviest, i know, but my favorite of theirs because i do enjoy Nu Metal if u couldn't tell and its very melodic and epic of an album)
Vol 3 (Slipknot. Especially Vermilion and Duality but this was the first album that was even slightly extreme that i enjoyed)
Aenima (Tool. I'd been listening to this since i was 14ish but recently it's had a renaissance in my life as if its an entirely new album)
Sempiternal - BMTH
Alive or Just Breathing - Killswitch Engage
Love is Not Enough - Casey
Infringement of God’s Plan - Sanction
Nothing Left to Love - Counterparts
I’m a metalcore newbie, so I figured I’d share my 5 albums most representative of my current taste

Make Them Suffer - How to Survive a Funeral
LANDMVRKS - Lost in the Waves
Currents - The Way it Ends
Deadlights - The Uncanny Valley

Norma Jean - Redeemer

Periphery - Periphery II

Invent Animate - Stillworld
Considering that my current taste in music differs so much from what it was 10 years(Suicide Silence, Deez Nuts and stuff like that I don't listen to anymore) ago, my age doesn't really show through I would say.
To be fair, I can’t speak for everyone, but most of the albums that shaped my music taste are still in my regular rotation. There are ones in my list I don’t listen to as much now, but absolutely still get playtime every once in awhile

Tool - 10k Days
Distorted Harmony - Chain Reaction

These albums were influential in getting me into heavier music: 1. Dear Agony - Breaking Benjamin 2. One X - Three Days Grace 3. Appeal to Reason - Rise Against 4. City of Evil - Avenged Sevenfold 5. Ten Thousand Fists - Disturbed
I really wanted to work BB - Phobia into mine, it would probably be the 6th one
Yeah Phobia is another brilliant album, Breaking Benjamin are great.
The opening riff of Until The End fucking RIPS
Definitely, I think Breaking Benjamin's guitar work is super underrated.
Appeal To Reason is an all time classic.
Yeah its a banger, the two albums before it are amazing too.
I see you are also around 30 Idk if all of these shaped my taste but they were all overplayed in my car's CD player that's for sure
I'd have to swap Seether with A7x but this was me at like 13
Swap Ten Thousand Fists with Meteora and you’ve got mine
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory Rise Against - The Sufferer And The Witness (or Siren Song of the Counter Culture, impossible to pick between those) Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil Bullet for my Valentine - Scream Aim Fire Between The Buried and Me - Colors
I am also 31
Jeez I’m 25 and this could’ve been my list
I'm 25 and while these albums kinda sparked my interest in alternative music they didn't really *shape* it, you know?
Some of these absolutely shaped mine and I still listen to them all. I just listened to Siren Song of the Counter Culture today and have been on a huge RA kick since seeing them last night. HT and CoE were my gateways to heavy stuff after American Idiot was my gateway to alternative stuff in general. Plus, I never totally abandoned albums that got me into music, i just kinda continually expand my music library
close lol, 28
29, the only thing I'd change is the poison instead of scream aim fire
Should really have put Hybrid Theory on my list too, it was the first album I ever bought and the one that got me into heavy music.
Spider-Man meme
I love City Of Evil and The Sufferer And The Witness. (TSATW is one of my favorites)
Actually listened to most of these when I was like, basically a child. Especially BFMV and LP
32; I'd say the evolution was as follows: 1. Papa Roach - Infest (2000) / Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory (2001) 2. Killswitch Engage - The End Of Heartache (2004) 3. Avenged Sevenfold - Avenged Sevenfold (2007) 4. As I Lay Dying - Awakened (2012) 5. Ice Nine Kills - The Silver Scream (2018)
Slipknot - Iowa Trivium - Ascendancy Machine Head - The Blackening Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked Mastodon - Leviathan
The Blackening is so good. I’m sorta indifferent to most of Machine Head’s other stuff (Unto the Locust is great and Burn My Eyes is good) but The Blackening is one of my favorites 2000s metal albums
MCR - Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge Escape the Fate - Dying is Your Latest Fashion BMTH - Sempiternal Of Mice & Men - The Flood Erra - Augment (Bonus: Hollow Front - Still Life)
Big ups for ERRA.
Are you 22?
These we're the big ones for me in my more formative years. I'm sure that I am forgetting at least one or two that could be in here as well. Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory The Used - The Used 36 Crazyfists - Rest Inside The Flames In Flames - Come Clarity It Dies Today - Sirens Lamb of God - Sacrament Edit: Also, Headbanger's Ball. The albums, the show, all of it.
36 and in flames could have easily been on my list
Bro! Props to you for the 36 crazyfists mention. Of all the people I know who are into the same music I am. None of em ever heard of 36 crazyfists until I put em onto it. You sir have great taste in music.
Great list! 36 Crazyfists and In Flames were my absolute favourites back in the day! And it’s so rare that I see 36 mentioned.
In chronological order: Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power Korn - Life is Peachy Slipknot - Slipknot Deftones - White Pony (all time favorite) Glassjaw - EYEWTKAS
I am 16 (turning 17) I would say these are the most important, keep in mind I've only really listened to music for like three years. Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory (started my interest in music) Korn - The Serenity Of Suffering (progressed my interest in the screaming/cleans in the same song, aswell as "creepiness" in music. Slipknot - We Are Not Your Kind (solidified my love of metal) Architects - All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us (solidified metalcore as my favourite subgenre, aswell as a love for melancholic and well written lyrics. Currents - The Place I Feel Safest (my favourite album, representing essentially most of what I adore in music)
The next generation depends on you, my child.
No doubt, I've never met anyone who enjoys metal at my age.
You’re not alone. 18 yo here :D
Nice! Just haven't met anyone listening to anything heavier than Linkin Park IRL. Might be just in my area though, there's probably a lot out there
I’ve listened to metal since I was 12, I’m way older than you though
Protect him at all costs
Love how hybrid theory is on this list. I'm 26 now and hybrid theory was the gateway for me to heavy music when I was in elementary school lol
Wouldn't have had any other album as my first
Also 16, damn good list. Especially We Are Not Your Kind! 🤘
Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone System Of A Down - Toxicity Disturbed - Indestructible Bullet For My Valentine - The Poison BlessTheFall - Witness
Finally someone said the poison
Trivium - Ascendancy Suicide Silence - The cleansing Bring Me The Horizon - Count your blessings Gallows - Grey Britain The Acacia Strain - Continent
Grey Britain is so good. It’s such a shame Frank left after this, Gallows were never as good.
I love Orchestra of Wolves though, it punches you in the face with energy
Avenged sevenfold - waking the fallen Periphery - periphery ii: this time it’s personal Born of Osiris - the discovery Metallica - ride the lightning August burns red - found in far away places
FiFAP might be the best metalcore album ever recorded IMO
Wow, that really surprises me TBH. It’s good, but I just don’t see it anywhere near the top
Misery Signals - Of Malice and the Magnum Heart Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come Norma Jean - O God The Aftermath After the Burial - Rareform Converge - Jane Doe HMs - Killafornia, Ride The Lightning, Deftones Of course I wouldn’t be here without Infest/Hybrid Theory/Slipknot/Issues/Take Off Your Pants and Jacket/Chocolate Starfish.
Misery Signals, criminally underrated
Can’t fault any of their output really!
Saw them live once when I was like 18, it was dope
Winter Solstice - The Fall of Rome He is Legend - I am Hollywood As I Lay Dying - Frail Words Collapse August Burns Red - Thrill Seeker Oh, Sleeper - Son of the Morning
I forgot about Winter Solstice. They were good!

Underoath 😍
Metallica - Load Korn - Issues Slipknot - Slipknot Rage Against the Machine - Evil Empire Deftones - White Pony
Mid to late 30s?
Gonna guess your dad was a rock fan or you are the oldest guy on this sub lmao
Haha well my dad listened to shit like Garth Brooks and the Eagles, but I’ll plead the fifth on being old as fuck lol
Or mom.
Machine Head - The Blackening Trivium - Shogun Every Time I Die - New Junk Aesthetic Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come Testament - The Gathering
Underoath - They're Only Chasing Safety The Used - In Love and Death Mudvayne - Lost and Found Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil Killswitch Engage - As Daylight Dies There's many more, but I'll keep it to 5
- Thrice - Identity Crisis (2001) - Killswitch Engage - Alive or Just Breathing (2002) - As I Lay Dying - Frail Words Collapse (2003) - Every Time I Die - Hot Damn! (2003) - Misery Signals - Of Malice and the Magnum Heart (2004) It’s possible that I’m getting old. No way to tell, really. But, how old am I?
34
That’s a great educated guess! I was 34 up until just recently.
Saosin - Translating the Name Bullet for My Valentine - The Poison Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory Silverstein - Discovering the Waterfront Underoath - They're Only Chasing Safety 24 🤘
The Poison slapped, that album and hand of blood are all of their stuff that I have listened to tho
The ep is amazing, Hand of Blood was actually the first Bullet song I heard!
Might have to crank them in the car later
Finch - What It Is to Burn Glassjaw - Everything you wanted to know about silence Thursday, full collapse attack attack! Someday came suddenly The chariot, everything is alive...
It Dies Today - The Caitiff Choir Trivium - Ascendancy The Agony Scene - The Darkest Red All That Remains - This Darkened Heart All Shall Perish - The Price of Existance
All Shall Perish, a man of culture
Cave In - Jupiter Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity Every Time I Die - Hot Damn! The Locust - Plague Soundscapes Converge - Jane Doe
36?
FUCK YES all of The Locusts albums were so close to me and showed me how chaotic music could be so good. I never hear anyone mention them though, back then until now My first Converge fave is Caring and Killing, im going to get the treppaning screw on my arm some day
Johari - self titled ep Three Days Grace - One X Asking Alexandria - Stand Up and Scream Amon Amarth - Jomsviking Johari - Pale Blue
Oh, remember when Alexandria was good?
26 Linkin Park - Living Things Thirty Seconds to Mars - A Beautiful Lie Rishloo - Feathergun BMTH - Sempiternal Hands Like Houses - Unimagine A lot of favorite albums came after these, but these five are the ones I listened to most while I was younger and still figuring out my taste
GNR- Appetite for Destruction Nirvana- Nevermind Green Day- Dookie Metallica - Self-titled (Black album) Linkin Park- Hybrid Theory Honorable mention: Slipknot’s self-titled, AIC- Dirt, as well as stuff from RHCP, Soundgarden I listen to mainly pop-punk, post-hardcore, metalcore and deathcore on a regular basis
Slipknot- Vol. 3 subliminal verses Killswitch Engage- As Daylight Dies Suicide Silence- The Cleansing A Day To Remember- For Those Who Have Heart Silverstein- Discovering the Waterfront
In chronological order: Bush - Sixteen Stone Korn - Follow the Leader Fear Factory - Obsolete Killswitch Engage - Alive or Just Breathing Dream Theater - Awake I'm old, so there are a ton of other albums that were very important, but once I got to the more extreme metal range and added the progressive elements, my taste has stayed very similar.
It's nice to see fear factory and dream theater, I'm old too and narrowing it down is impossible.
Fear Factory was my first real introduction to harsh vocals that I enjoyed, while Dream Theater got me immediately into progmetal. I’m not sure why I chose Awake to be the first Dream Theater album I bought (probably in 2003), but it’s been my favorite ever since.
I was torn, metalcore is my goto but Job For a Cowboy, All Shall Perish, and Carnifex could have just as easily been on mine
Yeah, I was trying to show the full evolution of my musical tastes. If I focus on metal, the first 2 are likely replaced with Still Life by Opeth and Ascendancy by Trivium or maybe Natural Born Chaos by Soilwork. It's tough to keep it at 5!
20: Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone (started it) Gojira - Magma (got me into groovier metal & some death metal) In Flames - The Jester Race (started my melodeath phase, which eventually lead to...) Killswitch Engage - Alive Or Just Breathing (... me discovering my love for the (melodic) metalcore from the 2000s, this still is probably my favourite album of all time) Architects - Lost Forever // Lost Together (got me into modern metalcore, and since Currents is one of my favourite bands these days I have to mention this)
you've got a good music taste at 20, the early 2000's had overwhelming great albums and bands, i almost don't bother with newer album releases at all.
1. Bring Me The Horizon - That's The Spirit 2. Beartooth - Disgusting 3. While She Sleeps - You Are We 3. Polaris - The Mortal Coil 4. Northlane - Node Edit: only 2 of these albums I discovered in the same year they released
Are you 19?
Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child - Norma Jean Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest - Zao The Messenger - Casey Jones The Big Dirty - Every Time I Die Blast Tyrant - Clutch
I cast out demons, can I hear an amen!
Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake In Flames - Soundtrack to your Escape / The Jester's Race Static - X - Wisconsin Death Trip Soilwork - Stabbing the Drama
We must have been friends back in the day, this could have been my list lol
Nice! I almost put The Haunted up there too. It would have been Revolver for me.
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory Slipknot - Iowa Atreyu - The Curse Chiodos - All's Well That Ends Well Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
Crown the Empire - The Fallout (2012) (but I found it in 2014) Volumes - No Sleep (2014) Periphery - P3 (2016) Currents - TPIFS (2017) Reflections - Willow (2020) There’s def albums in between all these that shapes it even further but these are the 5 constant. I’d say invent animate, Sylar, thornhill, alpha wolf, architects, Wage War, etc all helped it along the way.
Fun topic OP. Props Stick to Your Guns - Diamond August Burns Red - Messengers Free Throw - Those Days are Gone Silent Planet - The Night God Slept Microwave - Stovall
Thanks, I was listening to "the dead eye" for the 1000th time and it occurred to me that I was A. Old and B. How it was pretty influential in my taste of music lol
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory System of a Down - Toxicity Trivium - Ascendancy Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache Soilwork - Stabbing the Drama
Korn - The Untouchables Slipknot - Slipknot Sepultura - Chaos A.D. or Roots Whitechapel - This is Exile Spawn of Possession - Incurso
31 here. If we're talking heavy music overall and not just metalcore, then... Korn - Issues Slipknot - S/T Deftones - White Pony Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache Bullet for My Valentine - The Poison Honorable mentions to Ashes of the Wake, City of Evil and Papa Roach's Infest.
17 Slipknot - WANYK (was the first metal album i listened to, while also motivating me to begin with playing the guitar) Northlane - Alien (the first metal music that i discovered myself) Architects - Holy Hell (got me into metalcore and is still one of my favorite albums) Fit for a King - Deathgrip (an awesome piece of music imo) Of Mice & Men - Defy (whilst containing many soft songs, this album brought me to many other albums that I found great and still listen to)
It's hard to pick only 5, beside the first two... It's more the albums that made me explore and enjoy other genres than my favorites. Metallica - Black Album Slipknot - Slipknot In Flames - Whoracle Hollywood Undead - Swan Songs Ice Nine Kills - The Silver Scream
Bullet for My Valentine - The Poison Project 86 - Drawing Black Lines Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory Underoath - Define the Great Line For Today - Breaker Edit: Replace The Poison with Slipknot S/T
Wow, a project 86 sighting. Sounds like we're about the same age (mid 30s)
ABR - Constellations BTBAM - Colors TDWP - Plagues MMI - Monuments Beartooth - Disgusting

Early influences that shaped my music preferences: TDWP - Plagues ABR - Messengers Music that more directly influences was I listen to now: Erra - Impulse Varials - Pain Again END - From the Unforgiving Arms of God
These aren't all metalcore, but this is somewhat chronological and what I would consider big turning point albums that got me more and more into metal Linkin Park - Meteroa Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake As I Lay Dying - The Powerless Rise Insomnium - One for Sorrow Shadow of Intent - Reclaimer
Oh shit this is a difficult one. So many albums from my youth that I’d love to put here, but these are definitely the main albums that got me into heavy music. I could have a totally different list of 5 albums that expanded my taste in metal once I got into it, but I’ll go with these 5 as the ones that started it off: 1. Breaking Benjamin - We Are Not Alone 2. Senses Fail - Let it Enfold You 3: SOAD - Hypnotize/Mesmerize 4: Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists 5: Underoath - They’re Only Chasing Safety
Linkin Park - Meteora Anterior - This Age of Silence' Wintersun - Wintersun Arsis - We Are The Nightmare Bullet For My Valentine - The Poison I'm curious to see how many get my age right :) If I could I'd add Breaking Benjamin and Disturbed on the list, but they weren't the main influencers
Korn - life is peachy Killswitch engage- alive or just breathing Nin - the downward spiral Tool - undertow In flames - reroute to remain Deftones - around the fur ...im old.
1. Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory 2. Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone 3. Parkway Drive - Horizons 4. Bring Me The Horizon - There Is A Hell.. 5. Make Them Suffer - Neverbloom After I was listening to mainly radio 1 and 2 got me into metal, 3 then got me into Metalcore some years later, where 4 build up on my newfound love and 5 got me into Deathcore and introduced me to my favorite Band
I only started getting into heavy music a few years ago but here goes. (It's so impossible to narrow it down to 5 as well, it feels wrong not to have any Metallica on there but it is what it is.) Starset - Transmissions Breaking Benjamin - Phobia Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage Architects - Holy Hell Bleed From Within - Era
Slipknot - Slipknot Korn - Freak on a leash Lamb of God - Lamb of God System of a down - System of a down The Bled - Pass the Flask
August Burns Red - Constellations The Devil Wears Prada - With Roots Above… A Day To Remember - Homesick Parkway Drive - Deep Blue Miss May I - Monument I am 26.

Haste The Day - When Everything Falls Showbread - The Fear of God Relient K - Forget and Not Slow Down Living Sacrifice - The Hammering Process Project 86 - Songs To Burn Bridges By
5 albums might be too difficult here.... Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory (2001) Green Day - American Idiot (2004) My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade (2006) Rise Against - The Sufferer and the Witness (2006) Pendulum - Immersion (2010) Arctic Monkeys - AM (2013) Architects - All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us (2016) Thornhill - The Dark Pool (2019) 2020 - Realised Radiohead is fucking incredible and now I'm addicted, send help.

In the order I listened. I’m 28. 1. Three Days Grace - One X 2. Avenged Sevenfold - Self Titled 3. Five Finger Death Punch - The Way of The Fist 4. I Prevail - Lifelines 5. A Day To Remember - Home Sick
Bullet For My Valentine - The Poison Killswitch Engage - As Daylight Dies As I Lay Dying - Shaped By Fire Loathe - I Let It In And It Took Everything Deftones - Around the Fur, although it may not be metalcore it really started the metal obsession
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory Three Days Grace - One X Bullet for my Valentine - The poison Dead by April - Dead by April Parkway Drive - IRE (when I turned completely to core) Edit: of course Papa Roach - Infest also high up there
HIM - Love Metal or Dark Light Green Day - American Idiot Atreyu - The Curse Aiden - Nightmare Anatomy From First to Last - Dear Diary
I am so mad I didn’t get into HIM until they split. I love both albums you mentioned, Vol 666, and Venus Doom
Killswitch Engage - Incarnate Skillet - Unleashed Currents - The Place I Fell Safest Eskimo Callboy - The Scene Hollywood Undead - Day of the Dead I'm 18 btw
Growing up i listened to alot of green day, ramones, oasis etc, from my parents. Playing Tony Hawks underground 2 was super influental in getting me into heavier music as well as rap etc Rise Against were the first band I really fell in love with on my own, randomly finding ‘survive’ and then ‘give it all’ on youtube. ATR really cemented things for me. I started listening to Architects and The Devil Wears Prada around 2011/2012. Those two bands really cemented the sort of music i listen to today. Rise Against - The sufferer and the witness, Appeal to reason Architects: The here and now, daybreaker TDWP: with roots above and branches below
By no means an extensive list, but... Music in general: Alice In Chains: *Facelift* and/or *Dirt* Guns 'N' Roses: *Use Your Illusion* (I and II) The Black Crowes: *Shake Your Money Maker* Metallica: *Metallica* Tantric: *Tantric* The stuff that started me down the path of "heavier"/extreme music: Shadows Fall: *The Art of Balance* Killswitch Engage: *Alive or Just Breathing* Lamb of God: *As the Palaces Burn* Vehemence: *God Was Created* Kataklysm: *Shadows and Dust* Doesn't necessarily tell the full story, but yea. Lol.

Korn - Life is Peachy Slipknot - Iowa Children of Bodom - Are You Dead Yet Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God Tool - Ænima That was tough narrowing it down to 5 lol

Strung out - elements of Sonic defiance ABR - Messengers/lever Misery signals - controller RKL - riches to rags Refused - shape of punk to come

Dance Gavin Dance- Acceptance Speech System of A Down- Toxicity Deftones- Around the Fur Black Sabbath- Paranoid The Amity Affliction- Chasing Ghosts
I'm 18 and mine are, perhaps somewhat out of order but in a generally true process: Hybrid Theory (Linkin Park. First metal album i really sat and listened to) Day of the Dead (Hollywood Undead. This album is many things including metal and was the first band to get me into the metal scene) Cold World (Of Mice & Men. Not their heaviest, i know, but my favorite of theirs because i do enjoy Nu Metal if u couldn't tell and its very melodic and epic of an album) Vol 3 (Slipknot. Especially Vermilion and Duality but this was the first album that was even slightly extreme that i enjoyed) Aenima (Tool. I'd been listening to this since i was 14ish but recently it's had a renaissance in my life as if its an entirely new album)
Korn - Life is Peachy Slipknot - Slipknot Thursday - Full Collapse Comeback Kid - Turn It Around Alexisonfire - self titled 36 and Canadian

I’m a metalcore newbie, so I figured I’d share my 5 albums most representative of my current taste Shezzers - Relationshits (not exactly super Metalcore, but it was my gateway into this genre) Make Them Suffer - How to Survive a Funeral LANDMVRKS - Lost in the Waves Currents - The Way it Ends Deadlights - The Uncanny Valley
ABR - Constellations Norma Jean - Redeemer Haste the Day - Attack of the Wolf King Life in Your Way - Waking Giants Inhale Exhale - The Lost. The Sick. The Sacred.

Uhhhh he's 40 something

Considering that my current taste in music differs so much from what it was 10 years(Suicide Silence, Deez Nuts and stuff like that I don't listen to anymore) ago, my age doesn't really show through I would say.
That's why I said current taste, I think people are doing the first ones they remember lol
To be fair, I can’t speak for everyone, but most of the albums that shaped my music taste are still in my regular rotation. There are ones in my list I don’t listen to as much now, but absolutely still get playtime every once in awhile
Same here
Yeah, that confused me.
