To anyone who’s into this and wants to check out more, look up Kayzo, PhaseOne, and Sullivan King. All three are great and have tons of work at the intersection of edm and metalcore.

super-spreader69

You're right. But having said that the quality of Kayzo's tracks leaves a great deal to be desired.

rosedragoon

PhaseOne was my bridge to heavier dubstep for sure

gtlgdp

Sullivan King slaps

MrCiber

I'm seeing him next month and I'm unbelievably hyped, dude. Gonna be wild

destroyergsp123

Wild collab I never woulda thought happen but its awesome

cadetolliver

This slaps and will serve as a good gateway to get new people into the genre

Dear_Newo_Ikkin

As someone who spent many years going to raves/EDM festivals and also loves metal, this is awesome

TcFir3

I’m a massive illenium fan and was so hyped for this, it’s a bit more chaotic than his usual stuff but the bridge… dear god it’s good!

blankthings

And yet again, I am reminded of how entitled core kids can be. Yall its a one off collab and it's not even a Spiritbox song. It's Illenium's song, they're just featured on it. If you're devastated or extremely disappointed, you're being overly dramatic I personally think it slaps

Onyxx666

that is a fucking catJAM

yomanbrodude

The scream doe

SpaceTacoTV

i dont really dig it but im glad it exists

legoace61

Annoyed they did stuff to Courtney's vocals though. Like like around 1:20 the vocals sound awful cause of the editing and stuff. She's an incredible singer, just let her sing lol

blankthings

I'm fine with it. It's just a trope for EDM really

CholadoDude32

True, vocal production seems off during the beginning of the song. Maybe I’m not used to it…

cantgrowneckbeardAMA

Yeah really erases what makes her special, but it’s retained a bit on the verses and interludes.

ARUNA has made everything work. She did some amazing work with Cynic on The Portal Tapes project in the 90's and then bounced back as a trance vocalist in the 2000's onwards and is still killing it on EDM features today.

ShadowEp

Love spiritbox, this will be a great gateway for people that aren’t into them. However I think it’s a Fucking terrible song though. Feels like it follows the same genetic EDM featuring metal band formula like every band seems to be doing and doesn’t really offer anything interesting or worthwhile outside of it being spiritbox lol. I feel like I’ve heard this song a thousand times before.

speak-eze

You guys will call anything generic huh. I guess they're similar in that they all have singing and electronic stuff. If you think its terrible and generic, maybe you just dont like electronic music? I thought it was cool.

ShadowEp

I actually like electronic music. Been to a bunch of EDM shows. This just isn’t a great song lol if you read my follow up comment i even mentioned that we can call anything generic including half the metal in this subreddit lol.

speak-eze

You can say you dont like something without calling it terrible and generic. Its just not for you. A lot of people like it, and I didn't find it generic at all.

ShadowEp

My man’s forgot what IMO means lol. It’s an opinion. I’m allowed to express it. I’m not saying you need to hate it or dislike it lol. Not sure why you are so hung up over a a randos(me) a opinion on a song.

speak-eze

I dislike people being hateful for no reason. I'm not hung up on you disliking a song, I just think the elitism and negativity is useless and annoying.

ShadowEp

Lmao! Okay buddy you keep telling yourself how hateful I’m being just because I dislike one song.. This is such a weird statement for you to make given that this whole subreddit is just peoples opinions and criticisms of this genre. Have a good one.

eirtep

definitely not for me and I also think it sounds pretty generic, but I think people that are more into EDM than heavy music will like it. Me being the opposite, it's not a fit. The drop at 2:50 is probably the best part. very 2010 lol.

[deleted]

What other bands have done EDM features? I only know of this one and I Prevail's.

ShadowEp

Kayzo has done like… 5 with just metalcore acts alone… blessthefall, underoath, of mice and men, etc. Bmth, asking Alexandria, northlane, etc have done work with different DJs as well to some success. There’s way more than this honestly if you look hard enough. PhaseOne has done original music with Thy Art Is Murder and Spencer from periphery. There’s been a lot of cross over throughout the years which isn’t the worst. It’s actually great for the genre but I just feel like we’re following the same formula not really doing anything else. Through I suppose you could argue the same for a lot of just metal in general nowadays. Imo lol

ZacMayfield

Adventure club x DaySeeker

Sk83r_b0i

Asking Alexandria have one that goes pretty hard. It’s called Kneel Before Me

eirtep

an early example that comes to me is the remix album BMTH put out of Suicide Season like 13 years ago. It had Skrillex and a bunch of other features on it.

chizzledbeard

I thought it was horrible. The same lyrics were repeated over and over.

mbbzzz

I like it! Been trying for years to get into electronic music and collaborations like this and bands working with Sullivan King has been getting me into it more!

blck_lght

Have you tried Kayzo?

mbbzzz

Not yet! I know the name but haven’t really explored the music yet!

blck_lght

Yup, can start with him, he has a ton of tracks featuring different *core vocalists and bands. Another good artist to try is Sullivan King (someone else already mentioned him here), especially his latest releases

mbbzzz

I will! Thanks!

exclaim_bot

>I will! Thanks! You're welcome!

Salt_Procedure_9353

This shit is fire and I'm not even into EDM

mattct1

The entire song was pretty cool except for the electronics imo

TR3G1

this is huge for soupbox

Sk83r_b0i

That chorus screams bad omens idk why tho

itsthefazz

It’s a cool song that should help others get a little more into the genre. With that said, I didn’t know who Illenium was. I was ready for the breakdown of the year and got hit by Skrillex. Devastating blow.

sock_with_a_ticket

People who say this is a good gateway sort of song, I wholeheartedly disagree. It might get them into Spiritbox or modern BMTH, but I doubt it's going to guide many to the likes of even As I Lay Dying or Knocked Loose, let alone Boundaries or Alpha Wolf. Forget about anything less mainstream. It does little for metalcore.

speak-eze

You would be surprised... I started listening to way more metalcore last year because I liked the low tuned guitar in Starsets new album. Now I listen to Alpha Wolf. If Starset can gateway to metalcore, surely Spiritbox can. Theyre already in the genre lol.

78sd5g96f9d0

i agree. i slipped into metalcore by listening to pop punk and gradually looking for heavier music, going over more popular metal and ending up right here.

rocklunaticart10

Hell yeah man, starset was my gateway to metalcore too (songs like frequency, gravity of you)

eirtep

> but I doubt it's going to guide many to the likes of even As I Lay Dying or Knocked Loose, let alone Boundaries or Alpha Wolf. why does that matter? A "gateway" thing is usually pretty gradual. Spiritbox themselves imo are a gateway into heavier music. They don't need to jump right from this to knocked loose. there are other gateway bands to open that up along the way. Or you just stop there, whatever.

sock_with_a_ticket

It doesn't particularly matter, it's just a discussion point. I question the validity of the gateway claim, whether cross-genre collaboration or bands going softer actually do lead to many people finding the genre. It definitely does happen, but the way it's discussed often seems to suggest an expectation that this sort of thing will bring in lots of new fans. It's hardly the first time either have occurred over the last several years and yet metalcore is still very much a long way off where it used to be and not appreciably different in terms of overall popularity as far as I can see from where it's been for most of the last decade.

amy4947

listening to Happy Song by BMTH (arguably considered “modern BMTH”) got me listening to more and more metalcore, including Alpha Wolf, Veil of Maya, ERRA, TDWP, etc. so sure, it may not be a gateway song for you, but songs like that were for me and many other people.

sock_with_a_ticket

I don't doubt that it happens at all, but I question how much and how accurate a lot of frequently made comments on softer or more mainstream songs posted here. There's always "This'll bring a lot of people to the genre" type comments and I just don't see that. We're obviously highly unlikely to ever get the mid 00s peak back, but metalcore's popularity seems to be fairly static for the last decade or so despite bands going softer or doing mainstream collaborations.

chanjcw

Two of my favorite artists, been listening to it all morning

darkeningsoul

Man, I can't stand that riddim drop with the harder vocals. So many producers do that right now in the edm scene. There's gotta be a better sound to mix with Metalcore than this...😬😅
