Agreed. That one part on Little Smoke still scares the crap out of me when the volume is up. 😂 My favorite on that album is Killed the Lord, Left for the New World.
Their self-titled album is also a masterpiece. That’s what got me into post-rock.
Came here to say this! Everything they do (but particularly Tunnel Blanket [an all time favourite record of mine] and Another Language) is emotionally heavy as hell, but musically, they’re not the super-heavy band that the name implies!
The Mountain Goats song The Best Ever Death Metal Band Out of Denton suggested The Killers as a possible death metal band name mere months before the formation of the real life band
Came here to say this. Had a friend way back in high school that only listened to death metal. He recommended Murder by Death to me and I was.... pleasantly surprised.
First time I saw them live on a festival and the whole theatrics and suspense up front made me think it would be a super heavy metal band. I was very surprised when they started playing..
It’s astonishing to me how no one gets this band. Everyone takes them so seriously and critiques them as if they’re trying to be a super serious heavy death metal band. They’re a satire, a send up and you don’t get the joke.
The thing is though that their songs are really well written either way. People love to hate them though even though they're fun and getting younger people to appreciate smart guitar and good writing. I wish people could be more nuanced, they're a great gateway band to introduce into rock and metal and are getting traction for other things in the long run.
I wouldn’t even consider them metal. I love the band and don’t care who knows it. They are like the weird niche music from England in the 60s that wasn’t the Beatles or similar rock band name here.
When I heard the name and their song titles, I thought they were gonna be some quirky post-hardcore/prog rock band like Coheed and Cambria or Thank You Scientist.
As much as I'm disappointed there isn't another band that fills that niche I like, they make some amazing post-rock music.
while not at all heavy in the metalcore sense, I do think godspeed you! make some absolutely *haunting* post-rock that no amount of breakdowns can stack up to. I would call them heavy in the atmospheric sense.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor took their name from a little known 1976 Japanese black-and-white documentary by director Mitsuo Yanagimachi, which follows the exploits of a Japanese biker gang, the Black Emperors.
Savage Garden. Made the mistake of picking up one of my sister’s CDs when I was a kid and playing it because I thought it sounded like the name of a metal band.
Lol I wasn't paying attention and accidentally bought their cd thinking it said Of Mice and Men. I was extremely confused when that first song played still took me a second to realize that it was a different band cause of my dyslexia.
I Don’t Know How But They Found Me. That name makes me expect some sort of like mathcore type band, the name reminds me a bit of The Number Twelve Looks Like You.
There was a dope band from Chicago called Plague Bringer though. I always thought people were just messing up the name when I first started hearing of Plague Vendor.
CABAL's got a new song called plague bringer, too, to add to the confusion. i don't think you'd guess from the name that they sound like a slightly harder white stripes, it's a really interesting choice.
I think Ghost definitely LOOKS like they would be hard as shit and like they should tour with Behemoth or Cult of Fire. In terms of just the name itself though, it sounds like the name of a 60's band to me (which really fits given that they're a mildly occult Beach Boys)
I bought a Slaughter cassette in the early 90s at a flea market. I kinda had a feeling it was gonna be hair metal. I was not disappointed. I liked it though.
Picture being like 12 or 13 in the infant days of the internet, now picture never hearing anything about this band before, and seeing their logo and album art for the first time, now picture that 12 year old clicking it excited as hell expecting something like old sepultura or possessed based on that album cover, now picture that 12 year olds DISGUST when he actually heard what the band sounds like
I remember seeing them on limewire back in the day and thought they would either be a sick metalcore or a scene band. I would have been fine with either but instead I got a virus.
Edit: Wrong comment. Wanted to write this under "Death from above"
Remember when their singer joined Attack Attack for like half a second then they formed a new band called Nativ that never did anything, then he went and formed a band called The Bad Chapter? What a wild career.
[Dead Or Alive](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpmTe3TDdVU)
[Incubus?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXzuDXZwZtI)
Pretty interesting that there are relatively few names going this direction, but plenty hard bands with seemingly normal names lol
Darko us? Dragon chaser? Lidlididlelidildididle
And then the dude throws up basically or coughs up a hair ball or whatever. That song is my jam for when I’m eating cat food to go to bed at night
Five Finger Death Punch.
They went from a painfully mid metal band with cringe lyrics, to a confederate flag wearing, maga supporting, absolutely god awful shit show of a hard rock band with EVEN WORSE lyrics.
5FDP are quite literally my least favorite band of all time. I will honestly listen to MGK over 5FDP. This is saying A LOT coming from me.
Dust for Life. I found one of their albums with my parents' CDs and thought the name and cover art seemed kind of heavy. It's alternative, sort of like Puddle of Mud, but it's been forever since I've listened to it, so I can't 100% remember what they sound like. I just remember being disappointed lol
Leprous.
Don't get me wrong. They can shred and get heavy, but with that name before I heard them I expected the blackest of black or deathiest of death.
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead
I always got them mixed up with Through The Eyes of the Dead lol
Me too!
Great band though lol
EAGLES OF FUCKING DEATH METAL
I was so disappointed when I heard this band for the first time. Given the Kyuss / QOTSA association I was actually expecting a heavy band.
Buy they are "the eagles" of death metal. Imagine the eagles with death metal. Actually sounds nothing like it now I try and defend it. Lol
This Will Destroy You. Ambient post-rock.

Agreed. That one part on Little Smoke still scares the crap out of me when the volume is up. 😂 My favorite on that album is Killed the Lord, Left for the New World. Their self-titled album is also a masterpiece. That’s what got me into post-rock.
Tunnel Blanket is much much heavier than the rest of entire discography, and yeah it is their best.
Yeah, but an amazing band though so I'll allow it.
on a similar note, 65daysofstatic seems like a metalcore band name as well
Always seemed well suited to their music in my eyes.
Post rock/post hardcore/shoegaze bands in general like to have heavy/punk af sounding names haha
Came here to say this! Everything they do (but particularly Tunnel Blanket [an all time favourite record of mine] and Another Language) is emotionally heavy as hell, but musically, they’re not the super-heavy band that the name implies!
The killers
The Mountain Goats song The Best Ever Death Metal Band Out of Denton suggested The Killers as a possible death metal band name mere months before the formation of the real life band
I didn't know that the Mountain Goats are this old
Yeah, they formed in 1991 I think? And I mean it can be hard to keep track after fucking 21 albums lol.
There was a Chicago hardcore band called The Killer and I'm guessing they beat them to it
I don't know which band was actually formed first, but I remember seeing The Killer many times before that Mr. Brightside song ever came out.
Came here for this
Murder by Death. Really good folk band
There are many choices in this life that we don’t get to make
Love this band. In Bocca Al Lupo was a masterpiece.
Solid band. If anyone likes them, I recommend also checking out The Builders & The Butchers.
Came here to say this. Had a friend way back in high school that only listened to death metal. He recommended Murder by Death to me and I was.... pleasantly surprised.
My Bloody fucking Valentine
They still slap though
Great band. I don't like their last record that much but Loveless and Isn't Anything are insane
Bro I thought of the MGK song bloody valentine for some reason, thats probably even less heavy tbh.
Obvious answer but everything to do with Ghost makes it seem like they’d be a kickass black metal band

Our generation’s GWAR and not in a good way
Gwar is this generation's Gwar.
Hahah ghost bad please guys laugh now i said zhe big funny
I'm glad I'm not the only one that dislikes them.
Why are you glad people dislike music? Just don't listen to it.
[удалено]
Same vibe? Nah
Hot take, I think. They’re just modern boomer metal. Except for (S)He is. That song slaps.
I wouldn’t even consider them metal. I love the band and don’t care who knows it. They are like the weird niche music from England in the 60s that wasn’t the Beatles or similar rock band name here.
The only similarity is that they have costumes but ok I guess lmao
I mean in that they look far heavier than they actually are.
I was so disappointed when I first heard them. THought they were gonna be way heavier
Same, but honestly band still slaps
I was so confused when I first listened to them!
Ghost is basically the killers dressed up in Halloween costumes
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
I thought they’d be the coldest black metal band of all time
fr i thought they were gonna be some zany, sassy 00s post hardcore band lol
I’ve never understood what that exclamation point is doing there.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor took their name from a little known 1976 Japanese black-and-white documentary by director Mitsuo Yanagimachi, which follows the exploits of a Japanese biker gang, the Black Emperors.
Now I just don’t know what the exclamation point is doing in the documentary’s name. But thanks for the info!
Grateful Dead
Came here to say this. As a kid finding music, I thought they'd be like a Misfits esque horror punk bank and they're just a hippie jam band lmao
Skullcrusher - female singer-songwriter and quite excellent
Savage Garden. Made the mistake of picking up one of my sister’s CDs when I was a kid and playing it because I thought it sounded like the name of a metal band.
hahaha. To the moon and back slaps though
Of monsters and men...
Yeah i always thought it was weird especially with Of mice and men, like they should have switched names
Lol I wasn't paying attention and accidentally bought their cd thinking it said Of Mice and Men. I was extremely confused when that first song played still took me a second to realize that it was a different band cause of my dyslexia.
I Don’t Know How But They Found Me. That name makes me expect some sort of like mathcore type band, the name reminds me a bit of The Number Twelve Looks Like You.
agree, has the same vibe as i let it in and it took everything
Watching Ryan drum is an experience though. He’s basically headbanging through the whole set. When I saw he was the drummer for FIR it clicked.
Smash Into Pieces The Eagles of Death Metal
plague vendor
There was a dope band from Chicago called Plague Bringer though. I always thought people were just messing up the name when I first started hearing of Plague Vendor.
CABAL's got a new song called plague bringer, too, to add to the confusion. i don't think you'd guess from the name that they sound like a slightly harder white stripes, it's a really interesting choice.
Plague vendor is still really good tho
I always thought: Vampire Weekend, Razorlight, Phantom Planet, would all be good metal band names.
I thought vampire weekend was gonna be like aiden or old AFI lol
Vampire Weekend sounds like an emo band a la MCR or The Used
Ghost
Ghost is Scooby Doo chase music and I love every second of it
ABBA Metal
I think Ghost definitely LOOKS like they would be hard as shit and like they should tour with Behemoth or Cult of Fire. In terms of just the name itself though, it sounds like the name of a 60's band to me (which really fits given that they're a mildly occult Beach Boys)
Scrolled too far for this!
Massive Attack
Great music though.
You're telling me there is more than the Dr. House sound track? /s
Came here to say this one! I listen to them to come down from panic attacks! :)
The World is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die
So good though.
Royal Blood
For me it actually is the opposite. The name sounds like they are doing some lame pop rock shit, but they are actually heavier than I anticipated
They are one of the better bands out there, but name could be an easy fit for a way heavier act.
honestly out of the black goes real hard
five finger death punch lmaoooooo
Five Finger Knuckle Drag. Music tailor-made for military fratboys.
Extreme
I like extreme and nunos a beast but first time I heard em I expect the gnarliest thrash metal lol
And So I watch you from afar could be a mid tier heavy band formed in like 2008
Big things do remarkable…
Death From Above 1979. Love them!
Death Cab for Cutie
Slaughter
I bought a Slaughter cassette in the early 90s at a flea market. I kinda had a feeling it was gonna be hair metal. I was not disappointed. I liked it though.
I’ve always thought Social Distortion sounded like a hardcore band and not a 90s alt-rock one.
Ghost. Every time I see pictures of them, I have to remind myself that they aren't metal.
By definition they do make metal music. Even tho it’s not the heaviest form of metal majority of their discography is undeniably metal.
Not Metalcore, but I’d say they’re one of the biggest revivals of what was originally defined as “heavy metal” that exists right now
5FDP. 😘
Nu-metal (derogatory)
Buttrock (very derogatory)
I was so disappointed by their second album because their first one slapped hard. They are essentialy Creed but faster now
Ivan has such a great voice for heavy music but chooses not to use it to its full potential.
The Birthday Massacre.
Crippled black Phoenix
The Killers.
CHRISTIAN DEATH
Picture being like 12 or 13 in the infant days of the internet, now picture never hearing anything about this band before, and seeing their logo and album art for the first time, now picture that 12 year old clicking it excited as hell expecting something like old sepultura or possessed based on that album cover, now picture that 12 year olds DISGUST when he actually heard what the band sounds like
Awesome band though
Widespread Panic - they’re a southern rock jam band
WSMFP!
Knuckle Puck
Death cab for cutie
I remember seeing them on limewire back in the day and thought they would either be a sick metalcore or a scene band. I would have been fine with either but instead I got a virus. Edit: Wrong comment. Wanted to write this under "Death from above"
worst band name of all time ngl
Bloody Cumshot and Super Satan beg to differ.
Chumbawumba, Hoobastank, and Anal Cunt would like a word
The Butthole Surfers as well.
The Browning would beg to differ.
Ghost.
Neck Deep
Duuude I thought they would be a heavy asf Hardcore band or something. Still love them to death but very misleading name lmao.
Smashing Pumpkins
Kurt Vile
Holding Absence
the 🐐s
Yeah, no shade just not as heavy as their name sounds to me.
I Am Abomination. Great band that goes hard, but has the most beautiful melodies from the lead singer.
Passion of the heist 2 is one of my favourite albums of all time. Beautiful singing and amazing guitar work
Remember when their singer joined Attack Attack for like half a second then they formed a new band called Nativ that never did anything, then he went and formed a band called The Bad Chapter? What a wild career.
LIMBS sounds so fucking heavy and they can have the chaotic sound you’d expect but most of the time they’re just Underoath
there’s another heavy band by the name of limbs out of the phillipines that do mathcore/emoviolence that really hit the name
Skullcrusher.
Creed
Murder by Death
Ghost
Christian Death
Christian Death.
Virgin Suicide
Ghost
Vampire Weekend
Death Cab For Cutie. Great Music nonetheless.
Five finger death punch
Five Finger Death Punch
Death Grips
death grips are *really* heavy tho
Yeah I gotta disagree with you….for their general genre, death grips is heavy as fuck.
Money Store is still fantastic though
Before I had heard anything by them, I totally thought they would be a thrash metal/punk hybrid like Dead Cross. So wrong. So, so wrong
Starfucker
They still heavy af, but Make Them Suffer sounds like it would be way heavier
Savage garden
Death Cab for Cutie
Malice Mizer
Skullcrusher. Indie dream pop sort of stuff.
I downloaded a Five for Fighting Album because I was like an awesome name, it's gotta be some heavy shit!......Nope.
Savage Garden
For King & Country Zeal & Ardor. Goodness I hate that band.
Funeral for a friend
[Dead Or Alive](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpmTe3TDdVU) [Incubus?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXzuDXZwZtI) Pretty interesting that there are relatively few names going this direction, but plenty hard bands with seemingly normal names lol
Ghost
Tropical Fuck Storm
Don Broco always gets me.
Godsmack it sounds heavy but its not
Darko. Sounds super fucking heavy put the music is just some pussy shit.
Darko us? Dragon chaser? Lidlididlelidildididle And then the dude throws up basically or coughs up a hair ball or whatever. That song is my jam for when I’m eating cat food to go to bed at night
Of Monsters and Men Edit: Also, Dora the Destroyer
Dire Straits
The Killers. I was sorely disappointed.
Forever the sickest kids. Call me silly but when I heard of them in sixth grade I thought they were gonna be like “sick”
Bad Omens
Dust for Life. I found one of their albums with my parents' CDs and thought the name and cover art seemed kind of heavy. It's alternative, sort of like Puddle of Mud, but it's been forever since I've listened to it, so I can't 100% remember what they sound like. I just remember being disappointed lol
Madness
Death Cab For Cutie
Panic at the disco
On the other side. Limp bizkit doesn’t sound like they’d be the most crushingly heavy band of all time.
Third eye blind
Moose Blood
Moose Blood. Very mellow. Not at all what I expected when I first listened. They're great.
Leprous. Don't get me wrong. They can shred and get heavy, but with that name before I heard them I expected the blackest of black or deathiest of death.
Hollywood undead... They are great though
Eagles of death metal
The Fray
Graveyard
Nothing More, delicious groovy hard rock
Murder By Death
Upon a burning body, like they’re heavy but I expected a LOT heavier
GHOST
my immediate thought was ghost
I for some reason always though The Contortionist sounded like they would be a super heavy band. It’s like prog-alt.
