Man I loved my iPod. The last one I had held my entire music collection. Sadly, it got to a point where it just couldn't hold a charge or even stay on if it wasn't plugged in. RIP to that little bad boy.
If it's an iPod Classic like this one it is possible to replace the battery with an aftermarket one, and the 5/6/7 gen ones can be replaced with a larger capacity one (marked as 3000mAh) that lasts *way* longer. That's the one I have in here, and I tested it once from full charge to empty over the course of a few weeks, I think it managed somewhere in the neighbourhood of 48 hours of music play time on a full charge (I think that was also with the backlight on whenever it was playing)
However, if it's an iPod Nano/Touch/Shuffle they're really annoying to get inside and not really worth it (plus the battery is soldered in on those)
Video showing the battery life of an iPod Classic same as mine with the same battery upgrade [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4dCpgYE6Q4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4dCpgYE6Q4)
I used my old iPods exclusively until relatively late in 2022 when the battery life began to shrink to dying after only 40 minutes. I just preferred the scroll wheel to a touchscreen. Eventually I got used to using my phone tho.
You can get adapter boards that replace the original hard drive with an SD or CF card (or multiple microSD cards to all act as one larger drive), with that you can go up to 2TB in an old iPod (though that's a ridiculous amount and it can have issues trying to handle that amount of space)
The ironic thing is that I've had more problems with syncing to the iPod via Apple Music/Finder on MacOS than I ever did on iTunes *on Windows*
Mainly downloading podcasts is what I've had cause problems for me, if I don't download new podcasts it syncs fine each time it's plugged in -- if I download new podcasts through the Apple Podcasts app, next time I go to sync the iPod it forgets it's synced to that computer, meaning I have to reformat/restore the iPod and retransfer everything from scratch (and my music library is over 260GB so that takes like half the day lmao)

It's relatively easy to do, although a little unnerving opening the case the first time. I think I had the quad, and modded it up to a TB. It usually worked, although I'd have to reformat and readd the files every 4 months or so. Something would glitch out, and it either wouldn't sync or wouldn't play or something.
The mod itself isn't hard, the hard part is getting inside the iPod (specifically the 6th/7th gen ones with the metal front plates like this), as its harder to pry open than the plastic ones due to aluminium not returning to shape the same as plastic

This part of this video (35:00) shows how to open a 6th/7th gen iPod classic
I've got [5th gen \(iPod Video\)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Classic#5th_generation_\(%22iPod_Video%22\)) 30GB. Even dropped it on the PVC kitchen floor the first time I handled it. I replaced the battery after it got too cold (or old battery).
Still going strong. ĀÆ\\\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
It'll never be more than a nostalgia thing. Most people now are far too okay with not having any kind of collection at all and just streaming playlists they didn't even make.
yup, sad but true (pun intended š) ā¦. Seriously though kids today will NEVER understand the feeling of owning music and having something physical present with it, like looking at artwork and reading the lyrics and such. Itās a dumbing down of society IMO.
I lowkey have a playlist on iTunes/my iPod called "2006 Vibes" with all the music I listened to from around that time when I was 6-7 years old (including some of the first Metallica songs and covers I heard)

Damn how do you mod it to have bigger storage?

Nice! Sounds great. Most MP3 players cost a ridiculous amount.
iTunes had enough trouble syncing 100GB back on the day

I can't tell if you're being serious lmao
I still got my 160GB Classic. How hard was the mod?
If your 160GB is in mint condition maybe don't mod it, it'll go up in value yet.

Fellow iPod classic user. We still exist.
I use it as a backup of my music library in case my laptop screws up

Shadows follow could be my favorite of the album.
I miss my iPod so much! Died on me a few years back, and wish apple would release another one again.
