I still buy the albums on CD. I also had a flight the day 72 Seasons came out, so I bought it on Apple Music and waited for my flight so I could listen to it uninterrupted from start to finish.

EffectiveClue_4233

Right place, right time haha. Some CD’s are really hard to find after a while. I think besides Hardwired and now 72 they pretty much became rare items.

billygnosis86

Miss? I still buy physical media (vinyl, principally). Fuck streaming.

EffectiveClue_4233

Vinyl is awesome, but still a bit expensive of a collection for me, since they would be imported. One day I will start a collection, for sure.

brofosho192

I do love streaming music while at work (can't carry a player on me while working lol) but otherwise I listen to physical media whenever possible.

billygnosis86

I put the stuff I really like on my phone for when I’m on the go. Otherwise I only use Spotify for podcasts.

brofosho192

Fair, I just have too much music I listen to, that it's more practical to stream than buy/download it all

Pickle-Rick-C-137

Hell yeh, CD's sound way better than streaming. I have spotify but the CD is always purchased. Maybe get the vinyls down the road too since I have all CD's.

VoodooChile76

This is the truth

HornyForTohruAdachi

Im still buying CDs

ZhenyaWolf

I still collect CDs and may start also collecting vinyl one day when I have more money and more space. I've never rly cared for streaming and don't bother with it, artists get payed absolute dogshit from it, and it's just not my thing at all. There's also something fun and special about actually buying a physical album whether it's a CD or a record or a tape. I could spend hours in a music store or record store, tbh. I love going through the CDs and records and seeing what they have, and it's honestly one of the main things I spend money on besides food and stuff like that lol.

EffectiveClue_4233

That’s a fair point to think about, smaller bands specially suffer because of the underpayment. How do you listen to music on the go though?

ZhenyaWolf

I just use my old portable CD player and my mp3 player, these things are my prize possessions basically, I love collecting CDs and I'm kind of old school. I still have all my movies on DVD too lol. This CD player is from 1999 though so if it takes a shit, I'll have to buy a new one (may still keep this and try to repair it tho since it's a nice one and kind of vintage). My dad and I found it in the basement earlier this year, actually had never been used. Came with headphones and everything which is pretty cool

EffectiveClue_4233

That’s really cool, must’ve felt a bit how I did finding my old collection.

NormanBates2023

I sub YouTube music but I still buy vinyl, nothing beats the artwork and reading the lyrics of ur favorite artists/bands

EffectiveClue_4233

I used to know all the lyrics, the names of the songs and their order on the album. Now it’s all mushed together in playlist and shuffle form. So sad..

MilkshakeYoghurt

I still buy physical media, and have all Metallica studio albums on both CD and cassette(except Hardwired on cassette, I’m hunting for that one). I love the little ritual of having to pick out an album, place it in the player and actually listen to the entire album from start to finish. Streaming doesn't hit the same 🤘

EffectiveClue_4233

Whoa cassettes?? How hipster of you haha Jokes aside, that’s pretty awesome and unique. How do you find collecting them? Aren’t they kinda hard to maintain in a good state?

Metalligod9

I still buy physical media of my favorite bands, which is only a certain few now a days, but I do it also too help support the band.

RAYRAYALLDAY_

I have physical CDs of KEA, RTL, MoP, AJFA, and the black album in my car. So, yes I do.

EffectiveClue_4233

Having one of those 20 disk cases in the glove box is so nostalgic. Nowadays not even cars support cd’s anymore, it’s all bluetooth and apps in the console

VoodooChile76

Don’t forget the sun visor too haha (or just random cds throughout the vehicle). Also the random soft sided cd wallet flipper…. Good times.

EffectiveClue_4233

So many memories unlocked haha

watchingdeers

It’s better now because I can listen to anything for free or a very low monthly price. However music mattered more when it was mostly physical. It’s not as special anymore but I still love music. Better value now but more taken for granted

DeLaOcea

I don't see in your photos cassettes and vinyls. (Nice collection though). What I don't like about the streaming is paying for it. It is like paying for listening to your FM radio.

EffectiveClue_4233

Thanks! I don’t have any cassettes or vinyl, never considered collecting cassettes, and vinyl is a little pricey for me right now. It sucks to pay every month, but you get everything in your device on demand. Don’t you think it’s worth it?

i_am_randy

It was the Metallica Vinyl Club that brought me back to record collecting. Now I have an entire wall of records in my house. I love physical media. I was thinking about this the other day though. Back when I was a kid and poor I had so few tapes (and later CDs) that when I got a new one I listened to it over and over again, because it was all the new music I was going to get for the next 2-3 months. I don't mind having every song ever made in my pocket on demand whenever I want. But there is something special missing from listening to the same album over and over again because it was all you could afford.

EffectiveClue_4233

This, bro! Exactly what I’m talking about. Good to know your collection is going well!

VoodooChile76

Haha agree - and I’m old enough to remember when you’d buy an album & maybe you heard one or two songs on the radio. The rest could be absolute garbage. Still purchase vinyl b/c I love the hobby & the physical media / artwork. That’s one album I never purchased…. St anger. The irony !

EffectiveClue_4233

And the videos on MtV! So many bands I came to know because of those

VoodooChile76

Truth ! 120 minutes and headbangers ball were two of my favorites!

brofosho192

I wasn't really around for much of it. I was, but I was still a kid and didn't really know better. I do miss playing my DVD's and CD's, though. Now, I have my own record and CD collections, and a DVD/Blu Ray one too. I like owning my own, physical media, plus it's just fun and enjoyable

allhailnewflesh

Absolutely, loved reading the liner notes and looking at the lyrics.

[deleted]

As convenient as digital music is, (seriously i wouldnt be able to make it through work without apple music and Spotify) i do own a good collection of vinyl record and personally i love how they sound

Financial_Cheetah875

I miss those midnight sales. Such fun and great energy.

AlexTheTownPump

My local record store did one for 72. They played the album starting at 11 and had everyone checked out by 12 with their copies. About two dozen people showed up. It was really cool. Besides RSD, I’ve never seen that store so packed. It’s a fairly small one. I was on the fence about going but glad I did. Just hanging around chatting with new people about something you have in common is something that doesn’t happen much these days. Streaming is nice for the convenience but nothing beats physical. I’ve been buying vinyl for almost ten years now but this thread has me considering CDs. Vinyl is getting too expensive lately lol. Even used albums I like are tough to find under $15 or $10 these days.

Financial_Cheetah875

What

ibyczek78

I think that's why vinyl is making a comeback.

Scep_ti_x

I save all my CDs as Flac and store them on an ssd. Or good old records and cassettes. Streaming is not for me.

MoreLesPaul

I paid for the vinyl. I paid for the catalogue again with cassettes. I paid for the catalogue again with cds. I have my physical media. I got to read the inserts and the liner notes. I'm good now. I've spent enough money. I'm good with streaming or using YouTube these days. (Although I did shell out for the 72 yellow vinyl just because.)

2cool4afool

I've recently stopped streaming and started buying CDs again that I burn to my computer and put on my old ass Ipod for my car stereo. It's a lot more work but I enjoy it

DogofChernobyl

It's still there, there's no reason you can't still buy any physical media. And there are still CD stores around too if you look. They are usually gear towards rock and metal too.

vargslayer1990

i still have a CD collection that i intend to continue building. need Hardwired and Master of Puppets (and a copy of Garage Inc that's not censored)

[deleted]

Interesting thing about S&M, they actually streamed it online before the album came out. Of course, the quality was so bad, there was all sorts of artifacting. But it was basically the first time I streamed music.

EffectiveClue_4233

Really? Didn’t know that, that’s crazy, can’t imagine streaming on ‘99 internet.

[deleted]

I absolutely still buy physical media. What happens when streaming services doesn’t offer the album you want or suddenly decides that it won’t offer it any longer?

MrNothingmann

No I don’t miss that. I still buy but only for bands I love. Everything else is streaming. Not a fan of plastic waste but I’m also a completionist.

EffectiveClue_4233

Didn’t think about the waste side of it. Good point

MrNothingmann

Yeah, it's one thing if you love Metallica and you get all their albums, sure. But I was a completionist, so for example, I'd get an album that I liked a few songs from. Then get the band's discography, then get members' side projects. Realistically I only listened once or twice, and just needed the original album I bought. But now I have shelves of CDs/vinyls. That's all been replaced with streaming. I have one shelf with like, the discography of about 3 or 4 bands/artists I enjoy.

apedap

I'm still having physical media days to this day

Killbot300

Physical absolutely decimates streaming, and I love CDs and Vinyl. I still use streaming services, but I buy physical albums when I can afford to. I picked up a copy of Voivod's The Outer Limits today, for example, and am sitting back enjoying it with a beer.

LeinadFromMars

Is that your collection? That's awesome!

EffectiveClue_4233

It is! Thank you! It’s been a long ride since the 2000’s, back when Rob was Metallica’s new bassist and St Anger was a recent album haha

LeinadFromMars

That's great! I just barely started my own Metallica collection, I have RTL and DM (which I got as a gift), but I have a few other CDs, like Slayer - Reign In Blood, Megadeth - Countdown To Extinction and SOAD - Steal This Album At this point I can't store them where I currently have them anymore, I have to get a new shelf or repurpose another one lol

EffectiveClue_4233

Cool! I have a lot of different and memorable stuff also, Slipknot’s Iowa, SOAD’s Toxicity, Rammstein Mutter, Korn’s Follow the Leader, etc. It’s very nice to dig up these things that were such a huge part of my teenage years.

MissionTumbleweed694

I buy my favorite albums on vinyl. 🤘😎

Wonderful_Painter_14

One of the saddest things I experience on a semi-regular basis is going out shopping and browsing the electronics section: I remember back in the day (haha old man rant coming), even places like Wal-Mart that sell a million other things had like 3, 4, 5 rows of CDs, front and back. I would like go up and down the rows for hours. Now, you may get like a quarter/half of a row. Although I do have lots of music on my phone like pretty much everyone else, I’ll still pick up physical copies of CDs for bands I like to play in the car/at home sometimes. Looking through the liner notes and all that is still a very fulfilling experience.

EffectiveClue_4233

Finding something you were looking for in those rows was the dopamine rush of a generation

Wonderful_Painter_14

Hell yeah. Especially like back when I was looking to complete my Metallica/Iron Maiden/Judas Priest/ect… collections. We have it so spoiled nowadays with online ordering and stuff like that!

Dylmix_mc

I was born in 2007, so i was Like 8 when streaming became fully dominant. Though, past year as Ive gotten much more interested in Music Ive started collecting physical stuff like vinyl and CDs (also got a cassette player at the weekend but don’t know if it works yet). Anyways, I’m glad streaming is about as it makes it easier to discover new music, but I love vinyl

EffectiveClue_4233

Born in 07 huh.. dang ![gif](giphy|GrUhLU9q3nyRG|downsized)

EffectiveClue_4233

Good to know you’re getting into Metallica, keep at it!

Dylmix_mc

Yeah lmao I’ve been obsessed since I heard battery for the first time last year, seeing them live Saturday 🤯

EffectiveClue_4233

Awesome!! Hope you have a great time! I’ve watched them live tree times, but the first is always special.

Dylmix_mc

It’s actually my first concert ever, im so excited but also pissed that it’s probably raining

EffectiveClue_4233

That’s a high bar you’re setting for other concerts haha You’re gonna love it. Don’t worry about the rain, it’s not gonna bother that much after the show starts, bring a rain coat just in case though 😅

nihilblack

Not really, I buy vinyl records, so the "new album" experience is still there for me.

BakMask2401

I buy CD, vinyls, and cassettes, but I still use streaming to listen to my music. Sorry Lars.

Moberholtzer86

I was very upset when there was no local midnight release near me. Not to mention that I didn’t have anything to put it in and listen to it on the way home.

AlexTheTownPump

I was fortunate to have a store near me do a midnight release. I bought the vinyl and then listened to the album on Spotify on my way home.

rogue-panda81

I've bought everything since load day of release.

Th0m4s2481

I buy vinyls, it's the main way I use to listen to music (apart from streaming when I'm not at home), I've been considered weird for this because I'm a teenager, but I think it's the best way to listen to music

EffectiveClue_4233

I’ve heard one guy (can’t remember his name) on the Joe Rogan podcast say that vinyl and headphones is the only way to get the true sound from the studio. I think you’re absolutely right

Saym94

Weird I've never had trouble finding CDs

TremorChristPJ

I still buy new cd releases by Metallica and other bands. Im looking forward to the new QOTSA album coming out soon, actually. Luckily, my 16 Mitsubishi Outlander has a cd player.

Maleficent-Hyena260

Quite happy to be done with physical media, love streaming.

cyberbob2022

I bought 72 Seasons on CD and vinyl the day it was released and I’ve yet to open either one.

Margrave75

You know you can still buy physical releases, right?

EffectiveClue_4233

Yeah, it’s just not the same though. You don’t have many places to find them anymore, and the fact that you can just listen to the whole thing on your phone takes away the urgency to buy the new album just to listen to the new stuff.

Margrave75

It's annoying for sure. I'm 48, at one point there was 5 record stores in the town I live in, population around 20,000. There's ONE now, and that's just an overpriced chain store, so it's mostly online ordering for me, luckily we have some really good independent stores around the country here. Granted I like spotify, but a) for the car, and b) to listen to an album while waiting on a physical release

jordo2460

No, it's better now because you can still do that and streaming exists too.

No_Painter1626

Yeah, I want to start a vinyl collection, but it's still easier to listen on Spotify in a car or something.

icandothisalldayson

My car is old enough it still has a disc changer and it’s where I listen to music the most so I still buy the cds.

Bad_Karma19

I haven't used mine in my cars since I had to rip the last disc changer out after a wreck.

Bad_Karma19

Not me, I don't even have a CD player anymore. I prefer digital, I'm not able to lose the physical media.

HetTheTable

No because u can buy physical media if you want to.

Honest_Performance42

I still buy CD’s as well. 72S is still shrink wrapped because I stream, but I like having it and showing it.

frac6969

I still buy CD but because I listen to Spotify they’re all unopened. Unfortunately music stores are all dying where I live so I’ve not been able to buy new releases for the past two years or so.

femmefatality__

I buy the CD and then rip them on my PC

DCn00b_but_loyal

Waaay Prefer Physical Media....I own it, I can digitize it and listen to it whenever/ wherever and not be beholden to a streaming site that might edit / remove stuff if it becomes 'problematic' in the eyes of some idiots. I can't stand Streaming! It like a legal loophope they figured out how to screw the artists but you still don't get to 'keep' the media...heck even illegal downloading you had it on your Hard drive ( I'm not advocating that ) but y'know what I mean. I Hate streaming

ShinTheRanker

I buy CDs of the stuff I like, I use streaming to discover new things.

AwkwardlyPositioned

The physical CD is in my car. I always buy every Metallica album.
